Quit Dieting for Good
Episode #105: Quit Counting Macros with Christina Montalvo

Quit Dieting for Good

Play Episode Listen Later Oct 29, 2020 39:28

Christina Montalvo is the founder of The Confidence Project. She’s a personal trainer and intuitive eating coach, with a course called Diet Culture Drop Out. Today, we focused on counting macros. Christina has a really interesting story about getting started in the wellness space, and how dramatically her approach has changed since those early days! To learn why you shouldn’t be counting macros, listen in today! (Plus, a few notes on why using your phone to tell you when to cook, workout, or go to sleep isn’t the greatest idea.) Reminder: You have two days left to leave a review of the podcast and get FREE access to my holiday workshop! This is a fun giveaway in honor of my 100th episode, and I’d be honored if you took part! Just leave your review and send me your screenshot. In November, I’ll send you your access to the workshop and feel amazing throughout the holidays! Anti-Diet Strength and Conditioning Christina started as fat loss coach! Since then, she’s realized her entire education was steeped on intentional weight loss. Being a personal trainer meant helping people lose fat….it just came with the territory. However, since then she’s pivoted. Now, she owns an all-women’s strength and conditioning gym outside of Chicago, where she’s an anti-diet strength and conditioning coach. Her first memory of her body being a “problem” was when she was 10 years old. That’s when she started dieting, which launched her disordered relationship to eating and food. It was never considered disordered by others however; instead, it was applauded as what she “should” do to maintain her lifestyle and weight. During these time, she tried pretty much every diet under the sun. When she found counting macros, she thought she had found “food freedom”, because she could eat anything she wanted. Christina noted there was nothing and no one to point out how disordered and unhealthy all of this was. It wasn’t until she was an adult that she was able to identify the fear-based, confirmation biased-based information that the diet (and nutrition) industry so often spread. Freedom in Counting Macros? During her honeymoon phase with counting macros, Christina thought she was living the dream of food freedom. However, that all came to a head as she realized it didn’t provide the freedom from diet culture that she had hoped for. The macro nutrient component to a food can be found in everything we eat. These are carbs, proteins, and fat. When you do macro-counting, you create a caloric deficit and then create a plan when you’re “allowed” a certain number of macros for each of the big three categories. Some people add fiber counting as well. If you’re into macro counting, you’re usually attached to a tracking app AND measuring and weighing everything. Serving sizes, number of ounces, and ratios of macros become all consuming! In Christina’s personal and professional experience, macro counting is limiting and based on control and restriction. You may be “allowed” to eat pizza….but as a result, you can’t eat almost anything else for the day (or are restricted to very few items). Macro Counting Wasn’t Worth It Christina would work hard in the gym, often doing two-a-days, and religiously track her macros. Eventually, she realized that for the amount of time and energy she was expending….the results weren’t that phenomenal. The celebration of losing .5 pounds, or of making incremental changes to her body, started to no longer make sense. As a result, she started thinking more deeply about her relationship with food and exercise. She started making changes in her own life and habit first. (At the time, she was teaching macro counting to clients as well!) She would find that when her clients would participate in healthy activities, nothing mattered to them if the scale didn’t change. Even when they were doing things that should feel really good in and of themselves….they weren’t enough when the focus was on losing weight. Christina also noted that professionals in the field, as well as clients, weren’t prioritizing or celebrating behaviors that felt good AND that were good (like getting sleep, enjoying moving your body, and living a life you can enjoy), unless they could directly attach them to losing weight. Tempted By Counting Macros? Christina notes that there is something to be said about relying on technology, like macro counting apps, to tell you what to feed your body. A previous client of Christina’s, who was macro counting at the time, broke her phone. She immediately spiraled, because she couldn’t make eating decisions without seeing the “green bar” or knowing how she was “supposed” to eat, based on her app. The idea that we need outside intervention and technology to tell us what food to eat is ridiculous. Humans are born knowing how to eat, sleep, and use the bathroom. We know how to read our bodies and understand what we need. Rather than relying on external voices (diet industry! apps!) to tell us about our own bodies….what if we tried listening to our bodies instead? I loved that Christina talked about this, because it is so important! A few weeks ago I talked about my own relationship with my phone. I think we can all learn a lot about how technology interacts with our bodies, and how we sometimes use it to override our own biological cues. Another issue? When you’re counting macros, sometimes you’re really hungry…and sometimes you’re “force feeding” yourself plain chicken breast in order to meet the requirements of your macro plan. Rather than listening to your actual body and the needs she is communicating….you end up relying on “rules”, restrictions, and often an app to tell you what you MUST consume. So many of us are SO attached to our screens: TV, smart phones, tablets, and more! If that’s you….be sure to listen in to this full episode! Tracking It All! Christina and I also discussed the current fad with tracking everything on smart watches. For instance, so many people track their daily step counts, and often 10,000 steps is the “goal”. As Christina notes, that step number is arbitrary. It doesn’t mean anything, and it isn’t special or accurate. However, many of us like to have yes/no, or right/wrong rules to follow. We like to think that when we hit a step number, burn a certain number of calories, or complete a certain sequence of events, we’ve done everything right! And we love being right, and feeling we’ve been doing the right thing…even if it isn’t ultimately serving us. Too often, people attach morality to fitness trackers. (Christina has a whole podcast episode on this HERE!) We think of ourselves as being “better” people when we do everything our trackers say we should be doing. However, the also means being unattached to our own volition. We end up stripped of our own power, following rules instead of listening to our bodies and following our own intuition. When you have a chance, remember to leave a 5 Star Review over on Apple so you can get FREE access to the holiday workshop!

Genocide, rape and incarceration of the Indigenous constantly happen but all that mainstream media will cover is the environmental issues aspect of their struggles, often diluting the intensity of the problem. The Indigenous communities can't keep fighting on their own, they need the allegiance and support of allies to ensure that future generations don't face the same torture that previous generations have experienced. Black Americans, facing extreme levels of racism and hate crimes too, have always stood by natives, so now it's everyone else's duty to join the fight for justice and peace. In this episode we’ll be looking at the toxic culture of the fitness industry and the enforcement of gender stereotyping, harmful body shaming and policing of people's identities and lifestyles. To say that there is some toxic messaging used by the fitness industry would be an understatement. This is not to say that every person in the industry is preaching harmful rhetoric, but yeah, most of them are. There is a very large percentage of trainers out there who express the view that being ‘overweight’ is something to be ashamed of and that it’s something you should change about yourself. This view is layered on top of the discriminatory attitude constantly pushed by the industry and many trainers regarding people who are trans, gender diverse or queer; people of colour; people who are differently abled and people from lower sociaeconomic brackets. It is very NOT ok.How is a person supposed to feel good about getting moving when all they may be seeing or hearing is the message that they are wrong to be who they are or how they are.I’ve had folks tell me that they want to train at home before they join a gym so they look fitter, have lost weight, have some muscles before they go.Going to a gym, training studio or accessing a trainer are a right everyone should have, not a privilege accessible only to the few.Figuring out how you want to feel, what things you want to be able to do in life and how you want to see yourself are all important questions to ask yourself when you do decide to begin moving.Moving your body needs to be done on your terms. You are not obligated to fulfil anyone's expectations of who you are or how you should exist. If a gym or trainer is telling you that you need to lose weight regardless of your physical size or what your actual desires are when it comes to being active, I’d strongly recommend finding someone more affirming to help you get more active. There are trainers and gyms out there that are affirming of all bodies and all identities. If you pop on to instagram, you will be able to check out a bunch. Folks like:Dibs PTTrain with BeccaRooted ResistanceDecolonizing FitnessNon Normative Body ClubFearless Movement CollectivePony Club GymPink MantarayBlack Girl PilatesAlien AthleteQ Grit FitnessNon Conforming FitnessHarlan LiftsThese are just some of the folks around. There are many more out there but if you are in need of some affirming, body positive, supportive people that celebrate all bodies, all identities and all abilities then these profiles are an amazing place to start. The views pushed by the fitness industry, trainers and society as a whole are super toxic. They are fueled by a patriarchal society that diminishes any person that isn’t cisgendered, heterosexual, white and male.Breaking out of this engrained cycle of toxic shaming of our bodies, identities and lives can be tough and takes time. Trauma caused by these experiences shapes our whole identities, so it’s a process. Take it slow and be gentle with yourself. Our subconscious brain doesn’t distinguish what is truth from what is a story that we are telling ourselves. Stories like our bodies need to be changed, that we need to be attractive to be accepted by people, that we are lesser if we don’t “fit in” to the standard social construct of western culture. It believes everything we think. So we need to make sure we are telling it things that are helpful. When our subconscious believes positive affirming things we say about ourselves, it becomes easier to begin to change the harmful stories we tell about ourselves. Replacing them with ones that help to build us up.Find that one little thing and build on that. Every day you could say I am great at dressing myself. I feel ok about being me. I’m a good friend. I’m happy about my hair.Keep it small and simple. The more often you start saying a nice thing about you, the easier it becomes to believe the nice things and begin to see that the negative messaging out there isn’t yours to take on.Reminder: You are an excellent human, exactly as you are. No one is perfect. What is considered attractive, acceptable or desirable is totally subjective. If you truly struggle to believe that you can say a positive thing about yourself. Try something neutral instead. You could start with something like, I like the colour (insert your favourite colour/s here). The colour X makes me feel (insert neutral/positive feeling here) or even I have eyebrows, maybe you don’t have eyebrows and you could say I don’t have eyebrows.Just stick to little facts. If you have any questions about this episode or would like to learn about how we may be able to support you, you can go to www.fearlessmovement.co and send us a message or jump in and try out our 7 day free trial or join our at home training program. If you have a question or topic that you’d like discussed in an episode, please let us know as we’d love to help you out. Also feel welcome to pop in and leave a review at Apple Podcast or any other place you may be able to leave a review. If you like what you’re hearing, you can follow us on facebook at Fearless Movement Collective or on Instagram by following non_gendered_fitness, fearless_movement_co or Bowie as the.no.t.enbie.

Happy Holidays! Ok, so I just filled your heart with dread, didn’t I?! If you are a shopper, it’s annoying to see ANY holiday stuff months before the holiday begins, it’s like Live in the NOW, man!... but if you own and run a shop, it is VITAL to plan for your holiday season… starting right about now. This week I am going to help you make a PLAN for getting everything out of the holiday season that you want to! We’re going to set a goal, creating a vision for what you want out of the season, then we are going to talk about math (very briefly!) and marketing. This can be your most profitable time of year, but so that it can be your most peaceful time of year! Or at the very least, not absolutely miserable! Your holiday season may start now, or American Thanksgiving and go through the last night of Hanukkah, or New Year’s Day, or all the way through the Epiphany. Sidenote: I wrote this whole episode and then realized that these steps are exactly what I guide your WHOLE business through in my free masterclass. If you want to go a LOT deeper, check it out at taraswiger.com/foundations. Let’s dive in! Your Goal The first step to creating ANYTHING you want, and especially something with as many moving parts as your holiday season, is to set a goal or cast a vision, what do you want to get out of this season? What do you need to do, and by when? Let’s get more specific:  How much do you want to make in sales? What activities and events do you want to do this holiday season? (This may be everything from a big holiday show, to offering a Thanksgiving custom order, to buying a new menorah, to cutting down a Christmas tree. List it ALL out.) What deadlines do you have? Shipping deadlines: Shopping deadlines: Event deadlines: Other deadlines: What isn’t on this list but is important for you to do or experience this season? Now for the most important question: How do you want to FEEL? Math The next step is to look at the actual math - calendar math and profit math. The calendar math is pretty straight forward - put all of the dates on your calendar AND put all the deadlines. Now put a star on your list of all the things that are going to take more than 1-2 hours. (You need bigger chunks of time for these things). Now you have to switch to profit math before we come back to calendar math. Look at your sales goal - how much money do you want to make (monthly or over the two months, either answer is fine)? Now, with your current overhead and at the profit margin of each item, how many items will you need to sell to hit this number? (Don’t know your overhead or profit margin? You need the Foundations - learn more at TaraSwiger.com/foundations.) Once you know that number, you know how many things you need to sell! This is important because first, you need to HAVE this many items. I can’t believe how many shops want to make $1000/month but have less than $500 in stock. Now, if you’re a designer or you sell services, you can do the math - of the things I have for sale, how many of each will I need to sell, and you can skip right to marketing those things. As a product seller, if you don’t have that many things in your shop, before you worry about marketing, you need to focus on production - MAKE enough stuff. That’s where we come back to the calendar - how much stuff will you have for each show you have scheduled? How many items will you have by Black Friday or Cyber Monday? I recommend getting your shop STOCKED UP before American Thanksgiving, so you can focus on filling and shipping orders and enjoying your holiday. Marketing Tip: Focusing on production doesn’t mean you don’t do any marketing, this is prime time to be showing the PROCESS. Show what your studio looks like! Show your pile of products ready for the holidays. Show the day to day of creating. Back to the calendar - for you to have the amount of items you need by your deadlines, when will you make them? What days are production days? Set a realistic  production schedule, including the fun stuff you want to do this holiday season (in other words, if you want to spend a day baking cookies, don’t plan to spend that day on production) Stress Free Tip: If you’ve never had a production schedule before, you’re going to find that spending the time thinking about it NOW takes so much stress off the day to day. Communicate The key to meeting your holiday goals is communication - with your family, with your customers, and honesty with yourself! Before we jump into business communication, you need to communicate with your family! What are their expectations from you? What do they want to do together? What are you letting go of? Reminder: You have permission to let go of any holiday tradition that is not serving you.  And to adopt new ones that feel better. This will go smoother if you communicate with the other people involved! If you need to be heavily into production for the next month, let your partner and friends know! Ask them for the support you’ll need in this time! If you need to label items while you watch Elf with the kids, let them know! (If they don’t have sticky-cookie fingers, they can help!) Whatever you need from the people in your life, let them know! Of course this applies to your business too! It can be a real struggle to stay consistent with your marketing communication in busy seasons. But if you want increased sales, this is the time where you need to stay consistent. How to balance it? Make a plan! Decide what you’re going to say, when, and write it out ahead of time. Spend some time in early November writing some Instagram captions, sales emails, blog posts - however you communicate with your people, you can write it out ahead of time. This is why we have already worked on the calendar - it will now tell you when shipping deadlines are - this is one of the most important things for you to communicate, several times, so your people (who are also busy and distracted) don’t miss it! Right now schedule when you’re going to send shipping deadline reminders (if you’re not sure what to do, announce it 2 weeks out, 1 week out, 2 days and final day. YES that many times!). You may have a shipping deadline for Christmas, one for the last night of Hannukah, or any other date that is important to your people. If you make your items to order, then your order-by date is going to be even earlier! Once you’ve got your shipping and ordering deadline messages scheduled, look at any other event: Are you going to be at a holiday show? Schedule your messages about that. Are you doing a big Black Friday deal, go on and schedule your messages about that. What else do you want to share about this holiday season? Do you want to show your item in use during this season? Stage some photos and take them now. Do you want to share your own holiday traditions? Schedule those posts. Do you want to talk about your feelings around the holidays? Schedule that! Do you have weekly content? Be sure to schedule time to point people back to that. I know this sounds like a lot, but don’t get overwhelmed. The first step is to identify what you want to post when, the next step is to actually get it together (images and writing the words) and the final step is to schedule it (using a tool like Later for Instagram/Facebook). To be honest, I plan a month or two in advance, but I don’t get my content together until the week of, and for most of my business life, I haven’t scheduled things more than a week in advance. Now that I have toddlers and more chaos in my schedule, I’m needing to get a bit more ahead of it than that, so your particular scheduling cadence is going to be related to your particular life. To recap, you’re going to get your shop ready for the holidays by: setting your goal and casting a vision for what you want the holidays to be like, doing profit and calendar math so you know you CAN make it the way you want it, and then communicating that to both your loved ones and your customers. As a reminder, you can dive deeper into goals, profit and marketing plans in my free Masterclass, at TaraSwiger.com/foundations.     Listen in at TaraSwiger.com/podcast282
