The Design Brief is back and this time I'm chatting with another member of The Society of Australian Golf Course Architects, Ryan Van Der Veen.Ryan joins me to chat about his career, beginning with his time in golf course construction from a young age back in the USA where he was born. After getting his start using heavy machinery on weekends and school holidays, it was during his time studying at Purdue University where Ryan was given an opportunity to work with the late great Pete Dye with the reconstruction of their golf courses. From this early association with Pete Dye, Ryan was offered an opportunity to work at a golf course Pete Dye was building that in time would become the revered Whistling Straits Golf Course!Along with working with Pete Dye, Ryan spent a number years working as part of Greg Norman Golf Course Design team outside the USA including constructing the spectacular new Doonbeg in Ireland. It would soon turn that Ryan was asked to work in Australia with the Norman design team at a new golf course being constructed outside Adelaide in South Australia, when things soon changed thanks to the GFC! Ryan worked on a few other projects leading the Norman design and build team at some of our well known golf courses including Grange in Adelaide and Cathedral Lodge in Victoria, before life would soon see Ryan stay here in Australia and start his own golf course design business - Van Der Veen Designs.Join us for a great yarn hearing some wonderful stories from Ryan of building and now designing some great golf courses. You hit 'em clean and we'll keep 'em green! The Golfing Greenkeeper - InstagramThe Golfing Greenkeeper - FacebookThe Golfing Greenkeeper TV - YouTubeSend me an email to - thegolfinggreenkeeper@gmail.comPeople and places mentioned in this podcast:Ryan Van Der Veen - FacebookRyan Van Der Veen - SAGCA Profilesagca.com.auPete Dye - WikipediaPalmira Golf ClubPurdue University Golf ClubWhistling Straits Golf CourseBlackwolf RunBarefoot Golf & ResortTrump International Golf Links - Doonbeg CopperClub The Dunes - Port HughesThe Grange Golf ClubEastern Golf ClubCathedral Lodge & Golf Club - Greg Norman Golf Course DesignNew South Wales Golf ClubThe Huntley Development - Landscape ConceptGlenelg Golf ClubDye Designs GroupGreg Norman Golf Course DesignLove Golf DesignFazio Design

Eventually, his journey led him to Australia, where he's now based and continuing to make his mark. We dive into Ryan's current and upcoming projects, including: The nearly completed enhancement program at Glenelg Golf Club in South Australia, in collaboration with Neil Crafter A new project at Mollymook Golf Club in New South Wales Ryan brings a calm and thoughtful perspective to the craft—shaped by decades of experience and a unique blend of tradition and innovation. Joe Roediger, COO, discussed Woodmont Country Club's extensive sustainability initiatives across two 18-hole golf courses, six indoor tennis courts, and a 100,000 sq. ft. clubhouse. The club has eliminated single-use plastic bottles, implemented autonomous gas-free mowers, and battery-powered maintenance equipment, reducing operational costs. They've also introduced native grasses for water conservation and GPS-guided sprayers for a 15% reduction in fertilizer use. LED lighting and a water recycling system have significantly cut energy and water consumption. Future goals include more autonomous mowers and solar panel implementation. Roediger emphasized empowering leaders to identify and capitalize on sustainability opportunities. Also in this episode … A short course readies for debut at an Indiana resort. The Sand Creek Course at French Lick, which features nine holes ranging between 40 and 90 yards, is set for opening day on May 1. This brings French Lick Resort to a total of 54 holes of golf resort-wide, complementing the 18-hole championship Pete Dye and Donald Ross courses and the 9-hole Valley Links. A Florida course is adding a state-of-the-art driving range and golf learning center. The new facility at Dubsdread Golf Course in Orlando, Fla., will feature 40 total bays, 36 outfitted with advanced golf technology for an interactive experience and four traditional bays. The learning center includes two private teaching bays featuring full Trackman technology for precision training and custom fitting. And a New York club wins an injured-golfer case in Court of Appeals. The New York State Court of Appeals issued a unanimous decision stating that the Cazenovia (N.Y.) Golf Club is not liable for injuries sustained by a golfer who was struck by an errant golf ball while playing the course. The victory sets a precedent that will help protect golf course businesses.

Send us a textThe eternal golf equipment debate takes center stage as Joe abandons his trusted Strokes Gained putter pre tournament, comparing it to putting a misbehaving child in "timeout." This sparks a fascinating conversation about the psychology behind our club choices and when to make changes. Meanwhile, Jeremy delivers perhaps the most shocking equipment news imaginable - his conversion from a die-hard Titleist devotee to a new Callaway driver owner. The team jokes that Jeremy must have "a Titleist serial number engraved on an artery connected to his heart," making this change comparable to a religious conversion. His tournament victory with the new driver suggests that performance ultimately trumps brand loyalty. The discussion evolves into memorable analogies when comparing golf equipment preferences to face wash and Mexican food, culminating in the instant-classic line: "Lab is the menudo of golf." This perfectly captures how equipment choice remains deeply personal despite what others might think. We break down Tiger Woods' devastating Achilles rupture (describing "minimally invasive surgery" as perhaps the kindest description ever of such a brutal injury), preview The Players Championship with odds and sleeper picks, and discuss the surprising restoration of TPC Sawgrass to Pete Dye's original strategic design intent. The VGN Boulder City Municipal tournament recap reveals the challenges of adapting to dormant course conditions, while the upcoming Creator Classic at TPC Sawgrass promises entertainment from golf's content community. In this episode of Golf and Politics, hosts Matt Parker and Rob Elsworth are joined by course rater and golf architecture enthusiast Jake Marvin to discuss the recently released Golf Magazine Top 100 list. The trio dives into what it takes for a course to make the cut, exploring design elements, architectural trends, and the shifting preferences in the golf world. They highlight surprising entries like The Lido and Old Barnwell, the dominance of classic designs by Alister MacKenzie and Donald Ross, and the increasing popularity of minimalist, player-friendly layouts. The discussion covers the impact of course age, architectural originality, and how subjective factors like exclusivity and course difficulty influence rankings. They also tackle controversial omissions, such as Oak Tree National, and consider whether new courses should be ranked before standing the test of time. Along the way, the group reflects on the cultural and regional diversity of golf courses in the U.S. and abroad, debating the future of architecture in the sport and the role of these rankings in shaping public perception. Takeaways The Influence of Classic Architects Remains Strong: Courses designed by Alister MacKenzie, Donald Ross, and other pre-WWII architects dominate the Golf Magazine Top 100 list, reflecting enduring preferences for traditional golf course architecture. Modern Minimalism Gains Popularity: Recent courses like The Lido and Old Barnwell are embracing wider fairways and simpler designs, which prioritize playability while still challenging skilled players. Controversial Omissions Spark Debate: Courses like Oak Tree National and other Pete Dye designs have been left off the list, raising questions about the evolving tastes of course raters. The Role of Subjectivity in Rankings: Factors like exclusivity, difficulty, and aesthetics play a significant role in rankings, but they can create biases that overlook broader accessibility and enjoyment. New Courses Are Rising Quickly on the List: Several recently built courses have achieved high rankings, but there is debate about whether they should be included before maturing and proving their longevity. Accessibility Challenges for Everyday Golfers: Many of the top-ranked courses are private and expensive, limiting access for the majority of golfers, which raises concerns about inclusivity in the sport. The United States Leads in Diversity of Great Courses: From classic coastal links to rugged mountain layouts, the U.S. offers unmatched variety in top-tier golf courses, though accessibility remains a key issue. Will Doctor gives you the sharpest card for the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship and Korn Ferry Tour Championship! -Top 5 favs for Dunhill -2 matchups for Dunhill -1 t10 for Dunhill -2 outrights for Dunhill -Dunhill best bet -KFT Championship outright -KFT Championship best bet Summary Alfred Dunhill Links Championship Jon Rahm (0:54 - 5:20) Jon Rahm opens at +650, fresh off a second-place finish at the Open de España. Despite his strong recent form, Will Doctor passes on Rahm due to the unpredictable nature of his game and the ongoing conflict between LIV Golf and the PGA Tour. Rahm's excellent play over the past month is acknowledged, but his missed cut at this event in 2019 and distractions from the LIV-PGA dispute make him a risky pick. Rory McIlroy (5:21 - 10:30) McIlroy, priced at +700, has several near-wins this season, including a playoff loss at the BMW PGA Championship. His putting has been outstanding, but Will Doctor is concerned about potential distractions as McIlroy is paired with prominent figures in the pro-am. Despite McIlroy's stellar form and strong history at the Dunhill, Will Doctor opts to skip him this week, but favors McIlroy over Rahm. Tyrrell Hatton vs. Tommy Fleetwood (11:00 - 16:00) Hatton, priced at 11-1, has won this event twice but has struggled with slow starts this year. Will Doctor backs Hatton in a matchup against Fleetwood, whose poor putting and recent finishes (no better than 22nd) at the Dunhill raise concerns. Fleetwood's past success at the Dunhill, including multiple second-place finishes, is overshadowed by recent struggles. Shane Lowry (16:01 - 18:00) Lowry, priced at 20-1, is passed over due to his subpar putting. Despite strong ball striking, Will Doctor believes Lowry's struggles on the greens will keep him from contending this week. Robert MacIntyre vs. Shane Lowry (18:01 - 21:00) Will Doctor picks MacIntyre over Lowry in a matchup, citing MacIntyre's recent solid play, including a win at the Scottish Open and multiple top finishes. MacIntyre's consistent driving and putting make him a safer pick than Lowry. Grant Forrest (22:00 - 25:00) Forrest is Will Doctor's first outright pick, priced at 80-1. His recent form, including top-10 finishes at the Irish Open and Open de España, along with strong past performances at the Dunhill, make him a contender. Will Doctor also picks Forrest for a top-10 finish at +375. Tom McKibben (25:01 - 27:00) McKibben, at 60-1, is another outright pick. Despite recent struggles, McKibben's strong driving and iron play are highlighted as key strengths. His 10th-place finish at the BMW PGA signals a return to form, making him a value bet for this week. Best Bet: Nicholas Norgaard Over Patrick Reed (27:01 - 30:00) Norgaard is chosen over Reed at -115. Norgaard's recent win at the British Masters and strong play over the past month make him a reliable pick, while Reed's top-10 finish last week is attributed mostly to luck with putting. Korn Ferry Tour Championship John Pak (30:01 - 33:00) Pak, priced at 45-1, is Will Doctor's outright pick. Pak has shown recent improvement, finishing in the top 15 in his last two starts. Will Doctor believes Pak is well-positioned to win and secure a PGA Tour card. Isaiah Salenda (33:01 - 35:00) Salenda is Will Doctor's best bet for a top-20 finish at +320. His long drives make him well-suited for the demanding Pete Dye course, and Will Doctor expects him to rebound after a missed cut last week. Conclusion Will Doctor closes by encouraging listeners to stay tuned for more coverage and to review his Sanderson Farms Championship preview. His picks for the Alfred Dunhill Links and Korn Ferry Tour Championship offer a mix of well-researched matchups, outright winners, and best bets to guide bettors for the upcoming tournaments. Rob Thomas, Editor-in-Chief of Club + Resort Business and host of the Club + Resort Talks podcast, sat down with Gilles Gangon, Director of Sales at Casa de Campo in the Dominican Republic. A close personal friend of Pete Dye, Gilles was the longtime Director of Golf Operations at the acclaimed resort before taking on his new role. He has some VERY entertaining stories to share … as well as news on the upcoming renovation of Teeth of the Dog. Also in the news … After a two-and-a-half-year intensive course renovation, San Juan Oaks Golf Club in Hollister, Calif., has reopened for daily-fee play. Developer Third Millennium Partners has overseen the project from start to finish, with insights from golf architect Gene Bates—designer of the original course in 1996, along with PGA TOUR golfer and World Golf Hall of Fame member Fred Couples—who returned to modernize the layout in January 2022. The comprehensive restoration involved regrassing the entire course, including tees and fairways with perennial ryegrass, 007XL bentgrass on the greens and new drought-resistant Bermuda grass on the practice range. Installation of a new pump station and irrigation system reduces overwatering and achieves better playing conditions. A sinkhole at Bunker Hill Golf Course in Dubuque, Iowa, first appearing in May 2023, has raised concerns among local residents and golfers. The sinkhole, located near the 17th hole, measures 11 feet deep and exposes a limestone shelf, indicating a collapse into an underlying mineshaft. The golf course is situated above an old limestone mine, a common feature in the area, and sinkholes are not uncommon in the region due to the topography and historical mining activity. The City of Dubuque's Leisure Services Department, in collaboration with the engineering department, is actively working on a solution. Officials have confirmed that the depth of the sinkhole has remained stable, and the city is preparing to hire an outside company to repair it. The area has been fenced off and covered with plywood to ensure safety, and the city advises people to avoid the site. The Club at Olde Cypress in Naples, Fla. has enlisted Clive Daniel Hospitality for a renovation project. In partnership with Stock Development and Humphrey & Rosal Architects, Clive Daniel Hospitality is revitalizing the clubhouse to provide a refreshed, modernized experience for its members and guests. The renovation, which includes the expansion of both the bar and dining areas, will open the back of the dining space to panoramic views of the lake and golf course. The exterior will also see a transformation, with the addition of ample seating on the upper and lower terraces, and a newly constructed, covered exterior bar.

After designing golf courses for 25 years, Jim Nagle knows what club executives should look for when they search for an architect to plan their course renovation.  Nagle grew up wanting to be the next Bob Vila, but when the golf bug bit him, he traded home improvement for course improvement. Nagle combined his natural design talent, a landscape architecture degree from West Virginia University, and his newfound passion for the game into a life's work. He benefited from influential internships and summer jobs while in college, learning from architects like Pete Dye, Perry Dye, and Don Placek. He went on to spend most of his professional career as a golf course architect with Ron Forse and Forse Golf Design, Inc., specializing in the restoration and renovation of classic and modern golf courses. Nagle started his own business, Nagle Design Works, on March 1, 2024. His course redesign projects include Lancaster Country Club in central Pennsylvania, site of the recently completed U.S. Women's Open. In this episode, Nagle shares his story and lessons learned from a lifetime of work in the golf course industry. How to Evaluate Architects for Your Golf Course Project Golf courses, resorts, and related businesses benefited from the surge in engagement and golf activity from COVID-19, helping to offset some of the financial challenges posed by the pandemic, and also breathing new life into many facilities with capital improvements. Often members don't know exactly what the course needs, nor do they know who to hire. Nagel offered his top two traits an architect or designer should demonstrate before you sign him or her to a contract. Listening skills rank at the top. The applicant has to understand what the hot-button issues are and what the timeline is, and then help you develop a written plan of action.  Recall is not far behind. Nagel puts stock in being able “to walk a golf course, sit down four hours later, and rattle off all the distinct features of that course.” People, Not Pars Nagle was never very good at playing golf, but he's had a passion for the game and its people since he was a teenager.  As a designer or architect, you must be able to develop relationships with club leaders and members alike. It's rare to simply be handed the keys to a course overhaul, so engaging with the club community early in a project sets you up for success, like a nice drive down the middle of the fairway. Enjoy this episode of Leadership on the Links with Jim Nagle! Quotes “When I was a kid, I wanted to be the next Bob Vila.” “When we take that step into the unknown, in the back of your mind, it's like, is this going to work? Is this going to work? And I saw pretty quickly that I think it's going to work.” “Our industry is evolving, where now we're starting to see those courses built in the ‘50s, ‘60s, and ‘70s starting to get facelifts, but also starting to get some significant rebuilds.” “If there's anything our industry is, it's relationship-based. And it is so small that it will take you within a minute to find some sort of connection with the person you're sitting next to, talking to.” “They talk a lot about the community and what this U.S. Women's Open means to that community. To be a part of that, although a very small part of that, there's this community-wide success and enjoyment for this event.” Links Mentioned in This Episode: Tyler Bloom Consulting: https://tylerbloomconsulting.com/ Nagle Design Works: https://www.nagledesignworks.com/ Connect with Jim on LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/jim-nagle-asgca-31031414/ U.S. Women's Open at Lancaster Country Club (Photo Tour): https://www.uswomensopen.com/2024/galleries/course-tour-of-lancaster-country-club.html

Mike and Tim both fire 70's on the weekend in an epic podcast battle, could they be the hottest players on the planet not named Scottie Scheffler? We are kidding of course, but will go into the round a bit as Tim shot his first ever under par round on a championship golf course. Scottie Scheffler made a few putting changes, including both a new Taylormade mallet putter and not marking his golf ball with a line and as he displayed at Bay Hill, when he is making putts, he is really hard to beat. He fired a Sunday 66 to run away with the Arnold Palmer Invitational. We will also talk about a few other tournament tidbits and try to figure out what is wrong with Rory McIroy. After watching Full Swing 2 on Netflix this week, we will give our honest reviews of season 2 and why Mike is even more upset at Zach Johnson for one of his Ryder Cup picks after watching. Anthony Kim brought some fireworks to LIV Golf this week and will be playing again in Macau this coming week on the Asian Tour. Is signing Anthony Kim the best thing LIV has done for interest yet? The PGA Tour's flagship event, the Player's Championship is this week from TPC Sawgrass. Scottie Scheffler will be the favorite without question, but Pete Dye's course doesn't favor any one kind of player, so it is always an exciting test of golf. Former podcast guest Tom Hoge broke the course record last year and looks to build off that in 2024.

If you only knew the late Pete Dye as a funny and somewhat crotchety old man, and if you only know a little about his life's work, from Sawgrass to Whistling Straits, you might not have the sense of his hard edge—how he pursued his creative visions with zealous focus, and how we would say what he needed to say and do what he needed to do to see that vision to fulfillment. With his wife Alice, he forged one of the greatest design careers ever, and his sheer genius led the way at every turn.

ZIGIT's new proprietary technology allows golf course owners and operators to sell canned and bottled alcohol through attractive, stand-alone ZIGIT-enabled machines (boxes) at locations along golfers' journeys. Purchase eligibility is validated through ID verification / authentication and facial recognition, and drinks are dispensed typically within 30 seconds. Poised to transform convenience in conformance with regulations, ZIGIT meaningfully increases golfer satisfaction and alcohol sales at golf courses, country clubs and resorts. ZIGIT impressed at the 2023 PGA TOUR Wells Fargo Championship and is enjoying success at the American Airlines Arena, home to the NBA Dallas Mavericks and NHL Dallas Stars, as well at other sports and entertainment venues. Rob and Senior Editor Phil Keren also discussed some of the latest news from across the industry. Swing Racquet + Paddle in Raleigh, N.C., which is being called the “Disney World for Racquet Sports,” will include 80 indoor and outdoor courts for tennis, pickleball, padel, ping pong and more. The center will have a restaurant, bar, training facility, and walking trails that will connect to a local system. It is expected to create more than 300 new jobs, and a total economic impact of $360 million in just the first three years. An upcoming vote at the Detroit (Mich.) Golf Club will determine whether a full renovation will be put into motion. The estimated cost is expected to be $16.1 million and would be paid for largely through a one-time assessment for members. The club also would allocate $2.2 million from Rocket Mortgage Classic funds for the project and voting by members will begin March 6 and close March 16. An approval rate of more than 60% is being required by the prospective lenders working with Detroit Golf Club. Lastly, Omni Amelia Island (Fla.) Resort enlisted architect Beau Welling to renovate its Oak Marsh Golf Course. One of the chief goals of the project, which has a projected reopening date of Oct. 1, is to protect the architectural feel of Pete Dye's original 1972 creation. The new renovation of Oak Marsh will join Little Sandy—the resort's unique and entertaining 10-hole, par-3 course—and accompanying 18-hole putting course, both also the creation of Beau Welling Design.

Destination Golf At The Tree Farm

Play Episode Listen Later Jan 15, 2024 43:00

Already a Top 100 course in the nation, The Tree Farm was a vision of a PGA Tour Player back when it was a deep, dark and dense tree farm owned by a timber company. Looking to fully open its doors in September 2024, The Tree Farm is hoping to become not only a destination, but is also hoping to change how we might envision a golfing experience. The dream of PGA Tour player Zac Blair, The Tree Farm, a private club in Batesburg-Leesville, South Carolina, is just twenty-five minutes away from the revered Augusta National. Although Blair may have had some of the same desires as Bobby Jones had when he designed Augusta, Blair does not envision a major championship at The Tree Farm - he just wants the members to have fun and enjoy their game of golf. Simple. Just like the club's logo. Zac's dream started back in his native Utah, but when he was down in South Carolina with friends, he saw the property and started digging in - not earth - but his heels. He and renowned club manager, Eric Dietz, have set up a club to fully open in September, 2024. And, they have both gotten their hands dirty in creating a project that is cutting edge for the golf and club industries. Tom Doak, famed for his minimalist style, was perhaps the perfect choice to route the holes on the property that Blair wants to keep as the focus. Doak already had six courses in the Top 100 and studied under Pete Dye, while perhaps his biggest influencer was Alistair McKenzie. McKenzie of course studied under Bobby Jones. Blair then brought in his good friend Kye Goalby to finish the design - Kye had worked with Doak previously on several projects and was the best choice for finishing the ultimate design, says Blair. With 70 founding members, raising $35 million to help jump-start the project, Dietz and Blair know all 320 members. The two men are already well on their way to filling the 370 memberships at what will surely become one of golf's most desirable destinations. Blair has interviewed each and every member while Dietz welcomes them to the club, a club that is not steeped in tradition like past clubs he has managed, but is warm and welcoming to all levels of golfer. The Tree Farm revolves just around golf - there's no other real amenity. The clubhouse - the architect is a personal friend of Blair - is being designed and outfitted with the surroundings and natural, local environment in mind. The lodging is being built around an idea - Blair and Dietz call it "a lunch to lunch experience" - 24 hours, 2 rounds, 2 lunches, and 1 dinner to be enjoyed before departure. This idea of a course as a destination drawing members from miles away for a day or two, or even more, is a growing trend in the industry. With Streamsong outside of Tampa perhaps as the first of this kind, developers and financiers are finding large tracts of interesting land and building courses as destinations for day-trippers through to those looking for weekend getaways and week-long stays. Golf in Scotland, say at a Machrihanish or even further out like a Machrie, may have long before been destinations - and Blair and Dietz are using that model created long ago here in South Carolina, about as far from the Isle of Islay as one can get. "The course should be the star," says Blair. It's the course as to why people will want to come and visit. At a full-length of 6,900 yards and par 71 from the back tees, it's open and accessible for every level of golfer to enjoy and play. Listen in as Eric and Zac take us through their initial conversations and how they are creating a global destination from the land of an old timber company.

U.S. Amateur winner and holder of eight PGA Tour titles, Jerry Pate recounts each of those wins including his first non-major win at the 1976 Canadian Open by four shots over Jack Nicklaus and the final one at the 1982 Tournament Players Championship, the first one played at its current home, the Pete Dye-designed TPC Stadium Course where he won with an orange ball and tossed both Dye and Commissioner Deane Beman into the pond at eighteen. Weeks later, Jerry gave Craig Stadler a run at the Masters before injuring his shoulder in May, effectively ending the career of a promising player with HOF potential. Jerry Pate looks back over his regular Tour victories and tells many great stories along the way, "FORE the Good of the Game."

In February 2020, Garrett Morrison interviewed 1976 U.S. Open champion Jerry Pate about his win at the 1982 Players Championship, the first Players held at TPC Sawgrass. Jerry talked about his first impressions of the Pete Dye-designed Stadium Course, his post-victory leap into the pond next to the 18th green, and his fond memories of his friends Pete and Alice Dye. We used excerpts from Jerry and Garrett's conversation in our documentary podcast “Making TPC Sawgrass.” Since it's now the 40th anniversary of the '82 Players, we figured it was a good time to air the interview in full. Check out our video on the history, design, and evolution of TPC Sawgrass.
