Meet Chris Ardolina - a multi-award-winning teaching professional at Cove Cay Golf Club in Clearwater, Florida. Chris became a scratch golfer at - wait for it - the age of 14. After deciding not to pursue professional golf, he decided to give teaching a go. He immediately fell in love with it and the rest is history. In today's episode, you'll learn: How to identify the root cause of your struggles AND develop an effective practice plan to overcome them. How to infuse both intention and purpose into your practice sessions to accelerate results. How to approach the mental and physical aspects of your warm-up and what differes compared to when you practice. The three-step accelerated improvement framework Chris uses with all of his clients to meet them where they're at and get them to where they want to be - fast. Plus, Chris shared the top priority to focus on when you're trying to break 90, break 80, and shoot scratch. Get your pencils ready and start listening. More About Chris Chris grew up in central New Jersey and started playing golf at the age of 12. By age 14, he started shooting "par" at his local public course and earned recognition as one of the top junior golfers in the area. Throughout high school, Chris played 4 years of varsity golf, and his 9-hole score of 3 under par 33 remains tied for the lowest in school history. Chris's pursuit of a golf-focused career led him to Methodist University in Fayetteville, North Carolina where he majored in Business Administration with a concentration in Professional Golf Management. After graduating, he embarked on a journey with the Jim McLean Golf Schools in Miami, Florida, where his passion for teaching blossomed. He now owns and operates the Chris Ardolina Golf Academy out of Cove Cay Golf Club located in Clearwater, Florida. Beyond golf, Chris finds joy in playing ice hockey, tennis, yoga and biking along the scenic Tampa/Clearwater trails. Practice with intention and purpose, starting with small drills and gradually progressing to more challenging exercises. Create a focused warm-up routine to bring confidence and clarity to the first tee. Follow a three-step process for improvement: understand the current state, identify areas for improvement, and implement changes. As you progress in golf, shift your focus to more specific aspects of the game. Consistency is key for golfers looking to break 100. Eliminating big numbers and focusing on reducing penalty shots can lead to significant improvement. To break 90, golfers should work on their approach shots and aim for consistent distance control. Being able to get close to the green and give themselves a chance to make par or bogey is crucial. Breaking 80 requires hitting more greens and having a solid short game. Golfers should aim to make more pars and reduce the number of putts. Becoming a scratch golfer involves paying attention to the details and making good decisions on the course. Strategy and course management become more important at this level. Playing in tournaments requires practicing under pressure and being familiar with the rules. Many golfers struggle in tournaments because they are not used to playing with the same level of pressure and adherence to rules. Key Quotes: "You can go from hip high to shoulder to full swing all within that singular practice session" "I want you to take one to two practice swings for every ball that you hit" "The biggest thing that can help them create consistency and help them lose less golf balls or take less penalty shots." "Breaking 90 comes down to a lot of approach shots and consistent distance control." "To break 80, you need to hit more greens and have a solid short game." In today's episode, I'll recap… This past week, I played five balls per hole on a par-three short course (seriously), Breaking 100 for the second time Playing the front nine solo and the back nine with a group of rowdy buddies Grinding my way through some less-than-pretty golf Keeping golf fun Managing self-placed expectations. Start listening. P.S. I'm conducting research to better understand how I can provide the content and education you need to shoot more pars than bogeys. I want to learn more about your challenges, fears, desires, and goals so I can create content that impacts you and your game at a deeper level. If you currently have a double-digit handicap and are determined to break 90 (or 80), I'd love to ask you a handful of questions over a quick Zoom call. If you're open to it, you can schedule at your convenience here. Key Points: Consistent practice and focus on the short game can lead to significant improvement in distance control. Having a consistent warm-up routine is essential for preparing mentally and physically for a round of golf. Playing with others can create pressure and distractions, but it's important to focus on having fun and staying in the present moment. Blow-up holes can be analyzed to identify areas for improvement in course management and decision-making. A golf-specific training program that emphasizes mobility, flexibility, and endurance can help improve performance on the course. Key Quotes: "You as well need two variations of your pre-round warmup routine." “I did not play well. And I want to unpack some of the learning lessons and the challenges and I'll sprinkle in the wins because there were many wins in there.” “I need a backup routine. I need a short routine that allows me to be physically warm and to quickly build the confidence I need to play my best.” “I'll be very frank with you my fear I need to overcome is playing with others - there's this pressure I place on myself to be perfect to perform to live up to my potential and the expectations I place on myself” Subscribe to the More Pars Than Bogeys Newsletter. Meet Henry Kurusz IV, also known as Bear. He attended a high school golf powerhouse - the same school Charlie Woods now attends and the one Jack Nicklaus and Greg Norman sent their kids to - and despite having two small school offers to play collegiate golf, he decided to walk on Florida State to play. He won the walk-on tournament to make the team. Unfortunately, an injury derailed his college career, yet it would prove to be minuscule to the lupus diagnosis that almost took the game away from him in 2010 - and again in 2022 when symptoms flared up. You'll hear Henry's inspiring and admirable story, which includes winning thousands of dollars as a long-drive competitor (and competing on ESPN), and returning to the game that is ingrained in who he is despite battling lupus. You'll learn how he approaches and manages the mental game of golf, the feedback and coaching he'd offer his younger self - and shares with his two young boys - and what he recommends you do to accelerate your progress toward becoming a scratch golfer. Get your notepad out and start listening. Key Quotes: "It just stemmed from getting away from that mindset, getting the right mindset and playing a little more course management, playing the golf ball and getting it in play." "How did you keep your sanity, your clarity? Seeing them love the game and love finding golf balls and hitting golf balls." "It's learning a lot about the course management, really learning where your strengths and weaknesses are and trying to play towards that." “So there's a blood clot behind my knee. And so in the process of finding out why a relatively healthy 27 year old developed a blood clot, we developed or found out they had lupus. And so just kind of went with it.” Subscribe to the More Pars Than Bogeys Newsletter. I'm back with Scott Fawcett, founder of the DECADE Course Management System, to get the ins-and-outs of his unique approach to breaking 80 this summer! This time, we're really getting into the weeds of course management strategy. Scott highlights the limitations of traditional stat tracking and the benefits of focusing on metrics that truly reflect your game, while examining the relationship between putting and overall scoring. We discuss the power of keeping a “mental scorecard” and why it's so important to have a clear intention for each shot. For golfers averaging scores in the high 80s, tracking meaningful metrics like greens in regulation and redefining what constitutes a successful tee shot can lead to performance optimization. We dive into distance measurement next. Get Scott's expert insights on using launch monitors with your specific golf ball to pinpoint true iron distances and eliminate outliers. Learn how PGA pros like Aaron Wise use this data to make strategic adjustments, leading to more consistent, reliable shots. In the first of this two-part conversation, I'm sitting down with Scott Fawcett, founder of the DECADE Course Management System, to learn his unique approach to playing golf with intention–beyond the swing. Listen in as Scott shares how the game's evolution places equal weight on both the mental and the physical, drawing parallels between golf and chess. Whether you're a club-level player or an aspiring pro, Scott's Decade system offers a simplified approach to understanding the complexities of the game, helping you play smarter, not harder. We then take a deep dive into putting performance, breaking down the concepts of tracking putts and strokes gained. Discover the importance of walking off putt distances and why nailing long putts can dramatically impact your game. Professor Mark Broadie's strokes gained method offers a nuanced, step-by-step approach that goes beyond just counting total putts. Scott and I end the first part of our discussion with our thoughts on the types of mental health challenges faced by golfers at all levels. We explore the emotional and psychological strains of the sport, using drawing on our personal experiences to highlight the importance of having a support system to keep you afloat. From Tiger Woods' legendary mental resilience to the tragic story of Grayson Murray, we're bringing to the surface the need for more mental health awareness in the golfing community. Meet Matt Doud, former caddie at Pebble Beach Golf Club in Carmel, CA, sub-five handicap golfer, and a Business Made Simple Coach in the Kansas City Metro Area. In today's episode, we go inside the mind of Matt to unpack the insights and learning lessons he gleaned from caddying for all of these years. You'll learn about the critical mistakes most golfers make when it comes to course management, as well as how impactful errors in club selection can be. Gulp - the latter one hit home for me. We also discuss the mental approach necessary for a solid and consistent pre-shot routine, the role of identity in shaping who you are as a golfer (and the habits associated), and what you can do to find greater ease letting the past shot go as you focus on the present shot. Start listening. Key Quotes: "Okay, you get 10 seconds to feel how you want to feel about that shot. And then you have got to let the fucking thing go." "If you wonder why you're stuck shooting low nineties or high eighties and you aspire to shoot scratch, here's an easy way to likely shave off quite a few strokes without affecting your swing or even talking about pre-shot post-shot routines or anything. It's just simple course management." "Accept the outcome of that shot no matter what it was - immediately accept a shot mentally and emotionally and then start the routine over for the next one." More About Matt Doud Matt Doud, a certified Business Made Simple coach, is an early-stage Co-founder and Fractional COO based in the Kansas City Metro Area. Having discovered his passion for advising and coaching during his time as a caddie at Pebble Beach Golf Club in Carmel, CA, Matt pursued opportunities to utilize these skills professionally. He began by leveraging his Economics and Business degree from Westmont College as a financial advisor in Portland, OR, before co-founding Pre-Approve Me, a residential mortgage software company, in 2013, where he served as COO. Meet Luke Barton, the Business Development Director for 360IT Partners who has a sub-four handicap. Luke's golf journey began by grabbing a bag of clubs that was left out with his neighbor's trash. It was this curiosity that sparked an incredible rise in his skill and a drop in his score as he began to play the game of golf. And, just last week, Luke carded his lowest score ever - a 69 at one of his local courses in Virginia Beach. In today's episode, we go inside the mind of Luke to learn and unpack the value he places in continuing to improve his mental game. Specifically, Luke digs into the importance of curiosity and preparation in course management strategy, and discusses the role of what we inevitably refer to as Big Driver Energy (BDE) and the ego off the tee box. He also highlights major mental game and physical game changes that helped him move from a high 80s player to a consistent low 70s player. Start Listening. Key Quotes: "Investing in the mental game is crucial for success in golf." "Balancing ego and strategy is important to avoid counterproductive outcomes." "Curiosity and course management can greatly impact decision-making on the course." "Getting fitted for equipment can make a wildly large difference."
