In the year of our Lord 1987, a microbiologist named Curt Jones blessed us with the invention of Dippin' Dots. The nation's theme parks were never the same. But with success comes thievin' bitches. (Or just… regular competition, depending on how you look at it.) Curt decided to protect his patent. In doing so, he found himself in a lengthy and costly legal battle. T'was a rocky road.  Then Brandi tells us about Beau Rothwell, who is somehow even douchier than his name suggests. Beau was unhappy in his marriage, but didn't bother communicating that to his wife, Jennifer. Instead, he had an affair while simultaneously trying to get Jennifer pregnant. When Jennifer became pregnant, Beau was stunned. What was a douche to do? And now for a note about our process. For each episode, Kristin reads a bunch of articles, then spits them back out in her very limited vocabulary. Brandi copies and pastes from the best sources on the web. And sometimes Wikipedia. (No shade, Wikipedia. We love you.) We owe a huge debt of gratitude to the real experts who covered these cases. In this episode, Kristin pulled from: An episode of the podcast How I Built This, titled, Dippin' Dots: Curt Jones “Is Dippin' Dots still the ice cream of the future?” by K. Andy is a native L.A. dude -- which we love -- but more importantly, Andy is the ultimate hard-worker and road warrior.  Having performed upwards of 250 shows a year for almost 10 years, he has built a huge following both on the road and with his successful podcast, Andy Frasco's World Saving Podcast.  Andy's live shows are full-on collective explosions of fun, great music, and a celebration of life, albeit at times quite over the top. But Andy has cooled his jets significantly as of late and has gained more focus on living healthy (relatively speaking), and preaching self-love and being present in the moment. The shift Andy has undergone is absolutely noteworthy in today's complicated times of uncertainty and emotional upheaval, and he now brings a very admirable self-reflective attitude that is both warm and refreshing. Andy is one of Roadcase's favorite people; his easy laugh and fun loving attitude make him the perfect guest.  So jump onto the Roadcase bus for this simply awesome conversation with Andy Frasco.  Hang on tight...  it's a great ride!!For more information: https://linktr.ee/roadcasepod and https://www.roadcasepod.comContact: info@roadcasepod.comTheme music:  "Eugene (Instrumental)" by Waltzer

Dave has also played in a number of different bands including Stockholm Syndrome, Gov't Mule, J Mascis & The Fog, and Hard Working Americans, which Dave also produced.  Dave has also most recently worked with Andy Frasco, producing Andy's latest album.  Personally, Dave is a beacon of light, love and compassion, and his deep love of music and humankind comes across in everything he does. While he has struggled with addiction in the past, he is now a staunch advocate of mental health and strives to help others live better lives. Widespread Panic also support those in need with their own non-profit organization, Tunes for Tots, which helps bring musical instruments and gear to economically-challenged schools, among other worthy endeavors. The Sound Podcast with Ira Haberman

Neal Casal was a brilliant musician, singer, songwriter, and music aficionado who we lost way to early back in 2019. Like everyone else who crossed his path, I was devastated to hear that Neal sadly took his own life, just days after performing at the Lockn' Festival. He was such a kind and gentle soul who was always ready to share his time talking about his own music, the music he collaborated on, and music more generally. I had the great pleasure of welcoming him to this show a couple of times and met him just a few months prior to his passing.  Gary Waldman, Neal's manager, wanted to extend his close friend's legacy and organized a benefit show just a month after Neal's death where various artists performed at the Capitol Theatre in Port Chester, NY. That show brought in a sizeable amount of money to the Neal Casal Music Foundation, which distributes instruments and lessons to students in the New Jersey and New York schools.  Realizing the impact of that show, and wanting to further Neal's legacy, Waldman decided he'd draw up plans for an ambitious recording project that would see artists contribute recordings of Casal's music. That project, Highway Butterfly: The Songs of Neal Casal was co-produced by his old pal Dave Schools of Widespread Panic and Neal's band mate in Hard Working Americans and legendary rock producer Jim Scott. The five LP/3 CD box set was just recently released. The proceeds from the project will of course rest with the Neal Casal Music Foundation and a portion of which have already been earmarked for MusicCares and Backline a mental health organization for musicians.  To do our part, we sat down with the great Jim Scott to talk about this project, and of course Neal Casal whom Jim had worked with. Highway Butterfly: The Stories of Neal Casal

Dave Schools met Neal Casal the day they were set to go into Bob Weir's TRI Studio to record what would become the debut Hard Working Americans record. Bonding over Col. Bruce Hampton after a session, it didn't take too long for the two music lovers to become fast friends. Neal traded Dave his 2012 album Sweeten the Distance for a Hampton Grease Band album and Dave was blown away by Neal's capabilities as a singer and songwriter. Dave co-produced Highway Butterfly: The Songs of Neal Casal, and is an enthusiastic champion of the Neal Casal Music Foundation's mission. In this episode, Dave discusses the enormity and subsequent fulfillment of completing the 5-LP box set, touches on a few of the album's highlights, and discusses how providing mental health care and instruments and music lessons to children can be both life-changing and life-saving.Song clips in this episode: “Time Down The Wind” - Hiss Golden Messenger, Highway Butterfly: The Songs of Neal Casal“Death Of A Dream” - J Mascis, Highway Butterfly: The Songs of Neal Casal“Bird With No Name” - Jimmy Herring, Circles Around The Sun, Highway Butterfly: The Songs of Neal Casal“Too Much To Ask” - Kenny Roby, Amy Helm, Highway Butterfly: The Songs of Neal CasalEpisode artwork photography by Neal CasalDistributed by Osiris Media See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

Billy Strings first saw Neal Casal perform with Hard Working Americans, then soon after heard Circles Around the Sun (CATS) and became inspired by Neal's tastefully restrained playing style. He had an opportunity to jam with Neal at a festival and discussed recording with CATS, which unfortunately would never transpire. But when Billy came to PLYRZ Studio to record "All The Luck in The World," from Neal's 1996 album Rain, Wind and Speed, as the first single from Highway Butterfly: The Songs of Neal Casal, Circles Around the Sun was the backing band and something about it felt right. In this episode, Billy and Dave Schools discuss transmuting one's pain into something beautiful on stage, Richard Mink's airbrush artwork, and the importance of mental health care, particularly for performers who spend much of their lives on the road. On this episode of Plus One Eric talks with Dave Schools, founding member and powerhouse bassist of Widespread Panic. Widespread Panic has been an elite-level act in the jam scene for over three decades, and they are known for their lively fusion of southern rock, funk, and good time rock n’ roll. The band has gone through numerous lineup changes over the course of their lengthy career, and Schools has bumped the band along with his multifaceted six-string bass style since the very beginning.Schools has a unique ability to stealthily shift between hard rock-based and funk-oriented grooves. His acute, intuitive interpretation of his influences, which he and Kraz discuss extensively in this conversation, has been a driving force in the wild musical trail that Widespread Panic has blazed throughout the country over the course of their career, including each of their record-breaking 60 sold-outshowsat Red RocksAmphitheatre. In this expansive conversation, Schools and Kraz discuss everything from the formative years of Panic in Athens and the way they developed their sound, to differences between playing and producing music, to touching tales about late musical companions M ikey Houser and Neal Casal. If you like what we do, please give us a review on Apple Podcasts. Dave Schools on Comes A Time. Mike and Oteil welcome legendary bass player Dave Schools of Widespread Panic. They talk a lot of music, of course, and Dave shares his approach to consuming media and how his political views have evolved since his childhood in Richmond, Virginia, as the three cover the current political climate and the polarization we see today. Subscribe to Comes A Time. Series Finale of Politics of Truth. On this final episode, we wrap up the 2020 election with two of our favorite returning guests, Washington Post Bob Costa and Mark McKinnon, a veteran political advisor, former musician, and co-host of Showtime's The Circus. We try to make some sense of the electoral warfare being waged on the results of the presidential election, and who it's playing to. We also consider the historic turnout numbers across the country combined with razor thin margins in so many races, and unpack the tribal allegiances behind what look like Democrat/Republican splits. Weekend Spins. This week we have three more albums from our buddy Brian Brinkman. The albums discussed are Colter Wall's “Western Swing & Waltzes and Other Punchy Songs,” Kevin Morby's “Sundowner,” and FJ McMahon's “Spirit Of The Golden Juice.” Let us know what you think of these albums! The Sound Podcast with Ira Haberman

Kenny Roby is a singer-songwriter who has had an accomplished 20 year career that includes his former band 6 String Drag. They were a southern alt-country outfit who were part of that scene that included Whiskeytown, The Drive by Truckers, Drivin’ & Cryin’ amongst others in the mid 90s. Since the dissolution of 6 String Drag, Kenny has been on his own, making records, and trading songs with Neal Casal. In fact, Resevoir was to be produced by the late Neal Casal who passed a month before the production was to begin.  Dave Schools of Widespread Panic fame, but a great record producer in his own right, who knew of Kenny’s work through Neal, stepped in to produce the record with Jesse Aycock, John Lee Shannon, Jeff Hill and Tony Leone providing the backing band. The record is exquisite and deals with themes that were very personal to Kenny including his own mental health and substance abuse struggles, the break up of his marriage and ultimately getting through those challenges in hopes a better life.  We caught up with Kenny Roby to talk about the album, and our conversation started when I asked him about how tragic Neal Casal’s passing was for him personally.  First Song: 00:56: Old Love  Interview Begins: 04:38 Extro Song: 31:34 - I'm Gonna Love Again See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Playing with Warren Haynes, Nicki Bluhm, Phil Lesh, John Scofield… getting involved with youth music programs, losing his mom at a young age and what he learned from this, being present with the people you love, moving from Detroit to California, and why he’s “Gotta Serve Somebody.” Really sincere convo: Subscribe https://www.everyonelovesguitar.com/subscribe/  Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/EveryoneLovesGuitar/ Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/everyonelovesguitar/  Twitter: https://twitter.com/ELovesGuitar

Neal Casal is an accomplished guitarist whose interesting career has led him from Blackfoot in the late 80s to the singer/songwriter world in the 90s to Ryan Adams in “The Oughts” and then onto Phil Lesh to his current adventurous band Circles Around The Sun. Seth and Rob spoke with him before Circles took the stage at the Terminal West in Atlanta. The conversation starts with a discussion about the unique way this band came together and how the members push each other to continue to reinvent the music in the spontaneous nature it was initially created. We the jump in “the wayback machine” and learn about how this New Jersey kid ended up being the lead guitarist of what many say is the best incarnation of Ryan Adams and The Cardinals. He also elaborates on the organic genesis of the band, Brotherhood (with Chris Robinson) and the raw beauty of the Hard-Working Americans (with Dave Schools and the ever-enigmatic Todd Snider). The show opens with a brief phone conversation featuring Joel Cummins of Umphrey’s McGee. We learn about his new and wildly informative book, “The Realist’s Guide To a Successful Music Career” which he wrote with author/entrepreneur Matt DeCoursey. Joel and Rob walk through just some of the many pieces of music career strategy wisdom that this book offers. It is a “must-read” for anyone seriously contemplating a dive into the business of music. wTnS Sponsors: Polay + Clark 21st Century Accounting (Don't wait till April and get screwed, get Polayed) www.polayclark.com CBD Vermont: wTnS is sponsored by CBD Vermont, which partners with organic farms in Vermont to produce organically-grown hemp used in full spectrum extracts, available for sale at CBDVermont.com. Seth and Rob first discuss the various events this podcast will take part in during the upcoming SweetWater 420 Music Festival in Atlanta. Then the focus turns onto Jerry Joseph as we hear an interview recorded at David Barbe's Athens studio during Jerry's first days recording with a brand new band full of songwriters. Jerry is an accomplished singer, front man and lyricist and the founding member of Little Women, The Jackmormons, Stockholm Syndrome (which featured Dave Schools of the band that has greatly benefited from Jerry's songwriting, Widespread Panic) and this current project which is for now called Interstellar Boys. Jerry talks about how it has been a tad rare for him to play off of another guitar since his early Little Women days despite the fact that dual guitar has over the years served his music quite well. Then we learn how he began his world travels as a way to provide a actual adventure for his loyal fans. Over time this morphed into him becoming an even more extremely conscious international citizen himself. He has done great work in Nicaragua, Afghanistan and Iraq among other places. He even lost a Tel Aviv gig once because, "war broke out." Despite hating the actual word "empowerment," Joseph relates how he in fact helps to empower children by fearlessly traveling to war zones to provide equipment, share his music, encourage their music and teach guitar. Jerry's song "Giraffe" gets analyzed and then the trio hops into the "Wayback Machine" and Jerry relates how Ricky Nelson was pretty much how Jerry would initially find music and how he developed as a performer and how music helped him get through some very difficult times particularly during his days in New Zealand (Seth speculates with regard to what New Zealand's "Shalom" is. We also hear Jerry give a strikingly candid assessment with regard to how he has handled his own anger over the years and about the extent to which he views his own career as a success versus a failure. wTnS is Produced by Rob Turner and Engineered by Josh Thane of Wonder Dog Sounds Studio. www.joshthaneproductions.com www.wonderdogsounds.com All social media promotion and website maintenance/building done by Harris Sullivan. wTnS is a proud sponsor of the Osiris Podcast Network. Dave Schools (@DaveSchoools) graduated from Grove City College in 2012 with a degree in Entrepreneurship. At just 27 years old, Dave is a world-class blogger, author, and entrepreneur. In less than two years after college graduation, Dave founded Entrepreneur’s Handbook (EH), a Medium publication and blog with 22k+ followers, growing at 150+ new members every day. Amazingly, EH took off in less than 3 years from inception. Capitalizing off of EH’s success, Dave recently launched, Brew Projects, a community of students and mentors committed to bringing to life “side-hustles.” While building all these things, Dave is an Inc. columnist and published his first book, Runaway Millionaire. In this episode, Dave and I dive into his story and discuss tons of actionable advice, such as: How to become a world-class writer, even if you hate writing How to find a skill and become an entrepreneur How to turn a poor grade in public speaking into the best college experience How to master relational skills How to monetize a 20k+ blog following and make blogging a career How to write an irresistibly clickable title to score a top-10 article on Inc.com How to launch your own blog and post on external sites without compromising Google rankings How “curating” rather than writing can serve as effective community builder How to market yourself with a 3.0 GPA How to turn leadership in student government into opportunities How to write vulnerably  How to exploit a “first-mover” advantage in blog building How to capitalize on "megatrends" in blogging How to (tastefully) draw people in with "clickbate" How to be a model in college at a top 3 modeling agency (not kidding) Dave’s “tweetable” advice for college students: “Once you get to know yourself, get to know others.” Follow Dave on Medium, his personal site, or just drop him an email at dave@businessbrewers.com.

July 22 is my birthday and this year I will have the treat of attending a Widespread Panic concert at Winter Park, CO on my birthday! I am hoping for good weather and safe travels. This episode is an hour long special featuring various moments from shows I attended over the years. These aren't necessarily the 'best version ever' or anything - each was selected because I have a fond memory associated with each show. We'll kick everything off with the song that really 'grabbed my legs' and began my fascination and musical relationship with Widespread Panic.Ted circa 1971July 22, 1992 Chicago, ILStop-GoLisa and I attended this show at Mississippi Nights in St Louis. We had sold our tickets for what would end up being the final Grateful Dead show which occurred on the same evening in Chicago. After the chaos of Deer Creek and the hassle of St Louis, our Grateful Dead touring days were already over. Fortunately a new adventure in our lives was under way even if we weren't aware of it yet. This Ain't No Use is pretty crazy and I remember being on the floor three people back from Dave just overwhelmed by the intensity of this song.July 9, 1995 St. Louis, MOAin't No UseOn a whim Lisa, Maureen and I drove in the hot and humid midwestern heat for what seemed like 10,000 miles from Chicago to Ames, Iowa to see the band in a little bar. We woke up early, drove all day and saw a show that night. This was a very memorable trip including the discovery that the oil cap for the car's engine had been left off for about 200 miles. Where do you find an oil cap in the middle of a corn field? Plus the venue was serving giant 36 oz beers on special for $2. We did NOT wake up early the next morning.July 16, 1994 Ames, IAEarlyI drove up to Minneapolis with Dennis Dahl to see this final show of the spring tour. We slept on the floor of his friend's home office and couldn't find anything to eat anywhere near the venue - I think we had seafood quesadillas at an upscale brew pub or something. In any case, every time I here this song it brings back the emotions I experienced on spring tour 1997 - sweet, strong, tight, welcoming and powerful.May 10, 1997 Minneapolis, MNGenesisIn one 36 hour stretch I bought a plane ticket to Atlanta, won tickets to the show in a chat room interview with Dave Schools, heard the first Pilgrims on tape at Brian Sofer's house, missed the CNN interview I had been invited to, went to the show, sold $100 worth of tape covers in the parking lot, met the manager of the Lakewood Amphitheater who set me up with my own box (the Delta box) and bought my first round of drinks, got rip snorting drunk, went backstage, broke down Sofer's front door, flew back to Chicago and then drove to Alpine Valley, WI for the Lollapooza festival. The Last Straw indeed.July 26, 1997 AtlantaLast StrawThis show was a miracle all the way around. We're in downtown Detroit before they built the new stadium. Dennis, Val, Lisa and I show up hungry and several hours early for the show. Dennis and Val are vegetarians and there isn't a food establishment within, what seems like, miles. But wait - what is that tiny hut in the middle of that parking lot across the street from the venue? It looks like the parking attendant's booth.... It is a middle eastern restaurant that specializes in vegetarian food! That sums up this amazing trip to Detroit - around each turn there were surprises but through it all we were Feelin' Alright!May 1, 1997 DetroitFeelin' Alright Lisa and Ted circa 1994Thanks again to EVERYONE out there who have supported and helped us over the years with the project and on our journey to and from Panic shows. We really could not have done this labor of love without you.
