Before jumping into our history of band name punctuation, I wanted to let everyone know that on Thursday, October 31, I will be appearing in an online event with my former colleague Dave Edwards. This conversation is part of a series called The Smartest People in the Room that features “one-on-one conversations between music industry executives and personalities.” While I won't claim to be one of the smartest people in any room, I'm really excited for this. In the past, the event has featured the likes of Stewart Copeland, Bob Lefsetz, Gloria Gaynor, and Simon Napier-Bell, among many others. As noted, Dave Edwards and I worked together at Audiomack for years. As our Chief Revenue Officer, he has deep insight into the economics of how music streaming works and how it can be better. Recently, he left Audiomack to become the SVP of Revenue & Operations at Warner Records. Over an hour, we're going to talk all things music. This week, Brooke spends a lot of time talking about the horrifying hurricane that is impacting Florida and promising to be one of the most destructive. She looks at how people are taking to social media not just to show what they're doing to prep or to evacuate but also to use the opportunity to tell stories about themselves that, let's just say, are in poor taste. Brooke also talks about her thrill at being featured this week in Bob Lefsetz's iconic newsletter, The Lefsetz Letter, and tells the story of how that came to be. Then we have sleepmaxxing and mouth tape and the new phenomena of sparkly freckles brought to us by Taylor Swift. Self-described as "soaring-ambient-dreampop- experimental-folk", Constant Follower is the band formed around Scottish songwriter Stephen McAll. As a teenager, McAll survived an attack by a gang that left him with a catastrophic head injury, and every memory of his childhood gone. The next decade was spent in a cabin on Scotland's Western coastline, where he eventually began composing again. The result is a childhood imagined against a backdrop that, like the sea, is as serene as it is wild; ever- changing, yet resolute. Co-produced by McAll and renowned producer Kramer (Low, Galaxie 500, Will Oldham), their debut album ‘Neither Is, Nor Ever Was', was released on the legendary Shimmy Disc imprint on October 1st 2021, and has been championed by KEXP, WFMU, BBC 6 Music and BBC Radio Scotland.Learn more about Lyte.

Founded and based in Sydney, Harvest Media sprang from a team of serial tech entrepreneurs Angus Hayes, Roland Hélène, and Hamish Diver. Hayes created Mule Music, Australia's first B2C download service to sign distribution agreements with major labels in Australia. Hélène and Diver were the technologists who delivered the framework. The platform drew in many new opportunities, but was challenged by the arrival of cashed up music juggernaut iTunes. The trio used their first mover advantage and deep knowledge of digital music assets to leverage what they had built in the production music market.Learn more about Lyte.

Drinking from a firehose is how to describe my interview with Bob Lefsetz. Bob has been labelled a music guru and critic but I see him more as a cultural anthropologist who studies this intersection between music, culture, life, technology and era. Bob Lefsetz authors the Lefsetz Letters. I am a fan of how he thinks and writes so on a lark I sent him an email inviting him on the show. The way Bob Lefsetz breaks down the decades from the fifties to the present is must-listen content. This episode also covers his personal story, his personal battles with artists including Taylor Swift who wrote the song Mean as a counter to the scathing review he gave her for her Grammy Performance. I present Bob Lefsetz. Beholden to no one, razor-sharp, unapologetic, unabashed and unafraid. Bob Lefsetz has been in, and writing about the music biz for ages ! An east coaster who moved out west to chase his dream. He speaks about his early days growing up in Connecticut listening to show tunes with his parents and starting his passion for music. We learn about the circumstances that led him from taking the Bar Exam to working for a management firm. He talks about the relationships with artists and managers and what drove him to create the Lefsetz Letter, which has been circulated around the industry for over 25 years. We hear how he became the go to guy on the file sharing copyright issues which changed the game for the industry. He speaks to the method in which he became beholden to no one in an industry where there was plenty of opportunity for otherwise. He also covers his podcast, his shrink, his cronies and how he keeps the letter going. It's a really fun and candid conversation with a guy who eats , sleeps and drinks music!https://lefsetz.com/wordpress/@Lefsetz
This episode was recorded at the Dnext Summit in 2019. Bob Lefsetz is an American writer, past music industry executive and social disruptor and provocateur.

"Phil Spector estaba loco. Bob Lefsetz is the author of The Lefsetz Letter and host of The Bob Lefsetz Podcast. We talked Alice Cooper, college in Vermont, his honest thoughts on pursuing an artistic career, his honest thoughts on the publishing industry, and pretty much his honest thoughts on everything! What a legend, what a wile ride, and what an absolute pleasure this conversation was. Enjoy!
There's a lot of incredible stuff this week, and we hope you all get to listen to all of these amazing episodes. Peter Shapiro on Eric Krasno Plus One. This week Eric welcomes venue owner, concert promoter, festival creator, entrepreneur and all around cool guy Peter Shapiro, owner of Brooklyn Bowl and the Capitol Theatre as well as the force behind the Lockn' Festival, The Jammys, and Fare Thee Well. Eric and Peter have known each other for a long time, they talk about the Wetlands days with Soulive, the Brooklyn Bowl, taking big risks to create amazing new concert experiences, and what they expect for the future of live music.Dick's Picks 14 on 36 From the Vault. Rob and Steven jump into Dick's Picks Vol. 14, from the Boston Music Hall on November 30 and December 2, 1973. The first ever four-disc Dick's Picks, this dives back into the world of 1973. They discuss these four discs in detail, including a wonderful Weather Report Suite > Dark Star Jam > Eyes of the World, and about this era in general and their appreciation for Dick Latvala. Bob Lefsetz on Under the Scales. On this new episode, Tom talks with Bob Lefsetz, music industry analyst, author, podcaster and Phish fan about the state of music in the world today. If you're not familiar, Bob has a newsletter, called the Lefsetz Letter, that's prolific and smart and controversial, and a must-read in my opinion. He also has a podcast about the music industry. Kenny Roby on No Simple Road. You might remember my brief conversation with Kenny Roby on this show recently, when we talked about his new album, The Reservoir. The NSR crew goes into depth with Kenny about his first solo album in seven years, befriending and working with Neal Casal, Dave Schools stepping in to help manifest the vision of the new tunes, dealing with loss and struggle, and more. As a younger man, famous actor and Shed Dog KJ McNulty took steps to acquire the professional skills required to become an actor, as we all do when deciding to embark on other, less adrenalin-charged careers: he went to school. In this episode we hear a bit about what that entailed and how it came about. And so we have exposition, rising action, climax, falling action, but not the denouement yet, ladies and gentlemen, not (dramatic pause) yet. Bonus: where to hear Bob Ezrin expound on Alice Cooper and Lou Reed Berlin.Links: Shed Dogs; Bob Ezrin Interview by Bob Lefsetz; circle light on amazon—wow your friends!; WSU Pullman; Studio 58.
Even during this period of isolation, and with no venues open for you to perform, its still a great time to work on your live performance, because if you don't have a live show worth watching, no one will pay attention, especially if you're only platform is on Facebook Live. Don't make your live show the last thing on your list of things to accomplish in your career. On this episode, we have back in the studio Larry Butler. Larry has devoted his entire life to the live performance side of the music business. He played keyboards and guitar in bar bands during high school and college in Ohio, which evolved into club and concert promoting, and then tour manager for such artists as Randy Newman, Ry Cooder and Isaac Hayes. Those efforts led to 20+ years at Warner Bros. Records as VP Artist Relations. Although the focus at WBR was to utilize touring to sell records, he also coached many young artists in performance, staging and media relations. During this episode, we discuss: When doing a Facebook Live Performance, remember your job is to entertain, and your performance is key to attracting and keeping your viewers. Make your boring live performance entertaining. Your iphone is a conduit to a visual medium. Choreograph your show. Have a Banner Promoting Yourself. Determining how long your performance on Facebook Live be. Using body language to convey your emotions during a song. Using proper microphone etiquette. How you entertain your audience is timeless. Larry heads up Did It Music (http://www.diditmusic.com) in Nashville Tennessee. His focus these days is teaching young singer/songwriter/performers in the art of becoming experienced artist/writer/entertainers. His most recent book is The Singer/Songwriter Rule Book: 101 Ways To Help You Improve Your Chances Of Success, which is available at Amazon in digital and print. Cherie @cheriehu42 @water_and_music is a music journalist focused on the industry side. Her work helps a huge problem with the music industry, the exchange of information and learning. It's been historically difficult for anyone, but particularly the non-white and connected individuals, to learn how the music industry works. Writers like Cherie make this available to everyone. When I was a kid, it was Hits Magazine and Hitmakers, but only the already in the industry read it. Bob Lefsetz branched out with his email newsletter. UK started to fix things with Music Week, which inspired Billboard to pivot to Billboard Biz, and brought us Tim Ingham's Music Business Worldwide, which lead to Rolling Stone including this type of journalism. We have more like Mark Mulligan. It's getting a lot better. Cherie is the only non-white male I can think of doing writing at this level. He'd already produced "Welcome To My Nightmare" for Alice Cooper, and KISS's "Destroyer" album, and many others (how he got that far is a story all by itself), but Pink Floyd's The Wall was just ahead for Canadian producer Bob Ezrin. He told podcast host Bob Lefsetz how he came to produce the Floyd masterpiece. Hint: It's another right place-right time story. The Caroline he refers to was a Brit who was a staffer at NImbus 9 in Canada (formed by Ezrin and Guess Who producer Jack Richardson), and Steve O'Rourke is Pink Floyd's manager.
Few people continue to shape music industry strategy and opinion like Bob Lefsetz. Author of the Lefsetz Letter and podcast, Bob joins us today in front of an audience at Australian Music Week to talk vinyl, music, his 'asteroid albums' and anything else that comes to mind. If you like records, just starting a collection or are an uber-nerd with a house-full of vinyl, this is the podcast for you. Nate Goyer is The Vinyl Guide and discusses all things music and record-related.

Even our SuperGeniuses can sometimes be wrong. Let there be no doubt Bob Lefsetz is an intellectual giant among us. Several times a week, he implores us to be better people in his ubiquitous "Lefsetz Letter" but, alas, last week Bob released a missive entitled, "The Deaf Installer" that missed the mark, and wounded more than it healed. Here's why...

Takin' Care of Business wasn't a hit until well into the BTO run, but its origin story goes back to 1967. Randy Bachman recently told The Bob Lefsetz podcast the story of how TCOB came to be, and how that pizza delivery guy ended up performing on a world-wide hit. Truth is indeed, stranger than fiction!

I don't always agree with him, but I share his belief in the fundamental desire for truth.
Season 4 focuses on empowering the next paradigm of creativity. Today's guest is someone who aligns with my mission for truth and humanity: Bob Lefsetz. Bob is the writer of the independently produced Lefsetz Letter, which according to the LATimes is read by just about everyone who's anyone in the music industry. Bob and I sat down to discuss how he started writing, advice he has for aspiring writers and musicians, the future of writing, and why it's important to be a hermit on purpose. My very old bass guitar is long overdue a repair, so this episode features Kevin and Gary of Stairway To Kevin: an instrument repair shop on Denmark Street. While I was there I recorded a quick chat with them about their history with this place, and just what it was that needed repairing on my bass. Thanks Kevin and Gary, and I guess I'll be seeing you again in about a week. I'm looking forward to it. My bank account is not. I also talk about a few things I've found on the internet that have piqued my interest. Mostly podcasts, as I am a podcast fiend. In this episode, I interview an amazing performer who has the ability to light up any room he enters. He's an extremely talented songwriter, Actor, and owner of one of the best DJs companies I have ever heard in the US. He has toured all over the world promoting multiple albums, movies, and mustaches. We discuss things like crashing auditions, getting kicked out of acting class, back to the future, and specifically toward the last quarter we talk about how to create and distribute a film for the first time. Also, halfway through the in-person interview, we had to pause and pick it up over Skype so pardon the audio shift. "If this is the art you must do—on the road, in a dive bar, with your friends, for crowds big and small, when no one is looking, and it’s all you care about—you’re a professional.” The Rule of the Garage is this question: Can what you do in your garage become the way you earn a living? Think about side hustles & hobbies. Some people transform their hobbies into hugely successful businesses. They scratch their itch, then categorize their success to help others scratch theirs. There's also people who never leave their garage. Consider this: Roger Goddell just asked for a $50 million salary. To do what 10,000 fantasy football league commissioners do in their garage every Saturday for 16 weeks. The original idea came from this post by Bob Lefsetz, Hollywood's conscience: http://lefsetz.com/wordpress/2012/12/11/hobbyistprofessional/ And the next few episodes will cover the four levels of success Lefsetz notes. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/militarytransition/support

Article: http://lefsetz.com/wordpress/2014/05/28/myths/ Author: Bob Lefsetz In the last episode we talked more about record labels and how to score that elusive “deal". This week we dig into some music business mythology. Blasko uncovered an article written by the ever so controversial Mr. Bob Lefsetz simply titled “Myths” on his Lefsetz Letter Blog. We discuss each point in detail from myth to reality. Sales count. It's no longer whether someone buys your album, but whether they listen to it, that's the relevant metric that everybody seems to ignore as they trumpet irrelevant SoundScan numbers. Want to know if an act is truly happening, check their TICKET COUNTS! Social media builds careers. This would be like saying a baseball player's statistics make him a star. No, it's what he does on the field. Social media is a way for fans to stay in touch with their musical heroes. Music always has been and always will be the epicenter of any career. In other words, if you're good enough, you don't have to tweet, you don't have to maintain a Facebook page, your fans will spread the word and keep you alive. But you must have your music on YouTube and streaming services, you've got to make it easy for people to access it and listen to it. Publicity sells tickets. If this was so, Miley Cyrus would sell out. But she doesn't. And she's gotten more press than anybody. It'd be like expecting Kim Kardashian to fill arenas. Terrestrial radio is forever. It is the dominant listening format, it's still the best way to break a record. But if it's so big and powerful, why can you not name the number one record? Record companies care about art. They only care about money, it's a business, and if anybody tells you different, they're lying. Google Glass is the future. It breaks the number one rule of fashion, it's dorky! Wearables will play a part in the future, but they'll be relatively hidden, accessories. Only the geeks at Google could miss this. In other words, give a nerd a billion dollars and he's still a nerd. Selling out is cool. No, credibility is cool. Raising a ton of money on Kickstarter means anything other than the money. It's not about money, but how many pledgers there are. And in most cases, especially music, the number of people ponying up is miniscule. They'll support the artist, but they won't help grow the artist's reach/career. Sound quality counts. If it did, no one would be wearing Beats headphones. They sell because they're a fashion item. By APPLE aligning with a laughable enterprise built on momentary hype they are squandering brand equity. Bob Lefsetz wrote:"you must march into the future, you cannot live in the past" in a recent post called "Truth". That quote really struck a nerve with me as I think about how I have adjusted to technology over the past 20 years in the music business. Times are changing. And we must change with them. When I started Brobdingnagian Bards in 1999, there's a fast growing company called MP3.com that was revolutionizing the music industry...against their wishes. It took me at least a year to jump on the bandwagon. I got there right before it peaked. Then the record labels began suing the company to stop the future from coming. YouTube started changing the world in 2005. I heard about it. But again, I was slow to get on because I didn't have the video recording technology or skill set. It took me 8-9 years before I finally tried to step into that world. In 2011, Spotify entered the market. I heard music futurists shout, "streaming music is the next big thing". I didn't mess with it much. But eventually, they were right. CD sales continue to decline. Digital sales have dropped as much as 1/3. Patronage seems the most viable alternative for musicians to support themselves in the future. I was a fairly early adopter of Patreon. But I never figured out how to properly leverage the website, even today. Now, I am starting to plan the release of my next album--Irish Adventures on Higgins' Moon. I decided to fund raise that album through Patreon. I honestly don't know if this is possible. I've been talking about Patreon a LOT over the last 6 months trying to get more of my fans to become patrons for as little as $1. Not too many have signed up. Is that because they don't see value in supporting artists? Do they not understand this is the only way musicians will be able to make art in the future? Or do they just need further convincing and education on the topic? I don't know. But we must continue to march toward the future, not live in the past. That's one of my many goals. You can support my art. Make a pledge on Patreon. If you want to find out more about my music and subscribe to this podcast, go to www.celtfather.com.

Bob Lefsetz, author of the influential music industry newsletter the Lefsetz Letter, talks with Recode's Peter Kafka about the winners and losers in the modern music business. Lefsetz says the traditional music label model was one of artificial scarcity, and there's no going back now that streaming services like YouTube and Spotify have arisen. He also argues that Netflix is doomed and VR is being mis-sold to the public. Later in the show, he reflects on the election of Donald Trump and why he's skeptical of the New York Times' ability to challenge the incoming U.S. president. Learn more about your ad choices.
