Seph Custer is a singer, songwriter, and multi-instrumentalist from Southwest Virginia. For his first 7 years in music, his career revolved around playing lead guitar, banjo, slide and mandolin for numerous rock, americana, blues, punk, alternative, and traditional bands. With a desire to combine his love for a wide range of music, and a shortage of musicians to perform the required parts, Seph embraced the role of front-man for the first time in 2014. Since then, he's fined tuned his sound over the course of two studio albums and over 1,200 live performances, combining his diverse music taste with his skill set from several instruments; all delivered with only vocals and a modified guitar. Seph Custer delivers high energy solo performances utilizing techniques from guitar, mandolin and bass to create a soundscape on a single instrument that rivals some 3-piece bands: no looping or pre-recorded tracks required. Seph has been featured in The Floyd Country Store's annual tribute concerts, covering Bob Dylan, Gordon Lightfoot, Carole King, and Paul Simon. In 2015, Seph's music was so well received at Callaway Brewing Company, they named a small batch German Wheat Ale "Sepheweissen." Seph Custer & The Papa Tom Band were included in Floydfest's 2017 “Artists on the Rise” competition. In 2018, he became a member of Brackish Water Jamboree playing mandolin, joined them on tour, and performed alongside them in the “Rockn' to Lockn” competition. His first solo album, 'Where You Are' was released on January 19th, 2016. 'Where You Are' consists of 8 tracks, including 3 songs with violinist Laurel Brooke. It has been featured on 101.5 The Valley's Music Place, The Roanoke Times, and on various blogs online. 'Where You Are' was recorded, mixed, and mastered at Windfall Studios by Dave Fason in December of 2015. Seph's sophomore album, 'Beginning to End' features 12 original songs, touching on many genres; Americana, Funk, Bluegrass, Singer-Songwriter, Folk, Blues, Old-Time, and Rock, all performed with only guitar and vocals. 'Beginning to End' was recorded live on November 1st at Windfall Studios - engineered, mixed and mastered by Dave Fason, all on site. It was released worldwide on November 18th, 2017. As well as being a performer and composer, Seph teaches acoustic & electric guitar, mandolin, banjo, ukulele, bass, violin, slide guitar, lap steel, dobro, and music theory.

Neal Casal was a brilliant musician, singer, songwriter, and music aficionado who we lost way to early back in 2019. Like everyone else who crossed his path, I was devastated to hear that Neal sadly took his own life, just days after performing at the Lockn' Festival. He was such a kind and gentle soul who was always ready to share his time talking about his own music, the music he collaborated on, and music more generally. I had the great pleasure of welcoming him to this show a couple of times and met him just a few months prior to his passing. Gary Waldman, Neal's manager, wanted to extend his close friend's legacy and organized a benefit show just a month after Neal's death where various artists performed at the Capitol Theatre in Port Chester, NY. That show brought in a sizeable amount of money to the Neal Casal Music Foundation, which distributes instruments and lessons to students in the New Jersey and New York schools. Realizing the impact of that show, and wanting to further Neal's legacy, Waldman decided he'd draw up plans for an ambitious recording project that would see artists contribute recordings of Casal's music. That project, Highway Butterfly: The Songs of Neal Casal was co-produced by his old pal Dave Schools of Widespread Panic and Neal's band mate in Hard Working Americans and legendary rock producer Jim Scott. The five LP/3 CD box set was just recently released. The proceeds from the project will of course rest with the Neal Casal Music Foundation and a portion of which have already been earmarked for MusicCares and Backline a mental health organization for musicians. To do our part, we sat down with the great Jim Scott to talk about this project, and of course Neal Casal whom Jim had worked with. I spoke with Pete from his home in New York about three songs that played a big role in his life. We also traced how he went from making a student documentary film about the Grateful Dead parking lot scene in 1993, to being the man behind the band’s 50th anniversary reunion / celebration shows known as “Fare Thee Well” in 2015. Welcome back, Dead Freaks! On this episode I have an extended chat with guitarist Keller Williams about his long career as a solo artist and his many collaborations. We take it all the way back to his first guitar and up to this Summer's much anticipated shows with the Keels, Grateful Grass, and solo, of course. After touching on Michael Hedges, Leo Kottke, Charlie Hunter, and John Fahey; we also manage to get some Grateful Dead into the conversation. You can get all of the details on Keller Williams' upcoming shows, including links for tickets, at his website www.kellerwilliams.net. On the episode, Keller and I get into a tangent about the 1998 Autumn Equinox Festival at Wilmer's Park in Brandywine, MD. Here's a link the Benji Eisen's writeup of the show at jambands.com.Also in this episode, I mention Bob Weir & Wolf Brothers' tour but, at the time of the recording, I didn't have any news. As soon as I wrapped it up, NPR Music posted a delightful Tiny Desk Concert appearance. This was taped last year, just after Lockn' but the wait has certainly paid off. You can watch the video and enjoy a jamming Bird Song (with Mikaela Davis on harp & vocals) over at NPR Music.Allow me to remind you that the Brokedown Podcast is part of the Osiris Media. In this episode, Troy speaks with Patt Ochoa of Harmonium. Harmonium is a non-profit which you can find at many different music festivals across the USA. Their purpose is to provide support and information to those who seek the comfort and camaraderie of other clean and sober people at festivals. Established in 2002 at the first Bonnaroo Music and Art Festival. A gathering of like-minded individuals concluded the need for support each year and would return, in part, because of their presence. Harmonium was invited to the first Lockn' Music Festival in 2013 which was their first growth outside Bonnaroo and in 2014 saw growth that invited them to 12 total music festivals including Beyond Wonderland, Electric Daisy Carnival, Bonnaroo, Paradiso, Lockn', Lollapalooza, Outside Lands, Nocturnal Wonderland, Austin City Limits, and Countdown. In addition to working with Harmonium. Patt Ochoa also does Business Development at Sober Living Oregon Recovery Center. In this episode Patt even provides his tel # to those that are struggling with addiction / alcoholism or would just simply like to reach out to him. It was not so long ago that River City Roll owner and Richmond native Rob Long was an investment banker who hated his job. So, he got out of the office and did something about it. "Corporate America wasn't really for me," Long told Scott and Robey on the CBS 6 food podcast Eat It, Virginia! "I lived in three other cities across the country and they all had concepts similar to River City Roll. I saw them and spent a lot of money at them when I lived there. So when I moved back to Richmond, I actually moved into the Cookie Factory Lofts. And the acreage that [River City Roll] is on now was kind of a dilapidated old parking lot. And I was like, somebody is going to do this in Richmond. I don't particularly care for corporate America or my current job. So I'm going to take the leap of faith." And it was quite a leap. With neither restaurant experience nor an impressive bowling average, Long opened River City Roll on Myers Street, off Arthur Ashe Boulevard, in 2018. The concept combines an upscale bowling environment (think leather seats and playful lighting) with elevated dining options not typically expected at a bowling alley. Since this is a food podcast, it's that menu which drew our interest. The man behind the menu is Chef Brad Slemaker. "I couldn't do it without Brad Slemaker our chef," Long said. "He's just so talented. I mean he's trained under the best. So he was Walter Bundy sous chef at Lemaire. So, you know, Walter, I would say is, you know, one of the people I respect the most in the city. Shagbark [Bundy's current restaurant] is where I eat for my birthday every year. And for us to get Brad and give him kind of his own kitchen, he's really doing a great job." While wood-fired pizzas remain River City Roll's number one seller, Long highlighted other menu items such as Chef Brad's pork belly steamed buns and the truffle fries. "[Chef Brad has] tried to take the truffle fries off the menu the last three times and it's just the only time I give him a firm 'no.' They're probably also the biggest culprit for why I've gained 15 pounds since we've opened," Long laughed. "The ginger glazed chicken bowl is something I eat four to five times a week. I've convinced myself that it's somewhat healthy, which it is. But that that's my go-to. The new tuna dish which he's going to do on the next menu is incredible. Sesame crusted tuna, which I'm a big fan of. Our burger is underrated. I think his take on the Mexican shrimp cocktail is really cool and different." In addition to food, drink, and bowling, River City Roll bring music to Scott's Addition. The venue hosted a dozen concerts both inside the alley and out in the expansive parking lot. Long hopes to bring even more acts to town in 2020. "We had over 1,200 people here for Robert Randolph on our outdoor stage," he said. "We have had other acts like Andy Frasco who played at Lockn and Chris Jacobs played outside. The Wailers played inside." River City Roll made local headlines in 2019 when Long and his team opened Tommie's patio - a space dedicated with a Richmond's dog whose abusive death captured the community's hearts. When guests order a TOMMIETAIL cocktail, a portion of the proceeds goes to Richmond Animal Care and Control (RACC). "We wanted to think of a way that we could honor Tommie, but as well continue to support RACC in an ongoing fashion. So, the original debut of Tommie's patio, I think we raised close to $7,000," Long said. "But you know, sales on Tommie's patio get donated to RACC every month. So it's not just a one time thing. It's a kind of a constant thing." Long hopes River City Roll remains a constant choice for Richmonders looking to have fun in the city. Email EatItVirginia@gmail.com to provide podcast feedback and suggest guests for future shows.

The Jam Band community owes a debt of gratitude to Blues Traveler, who in many ways pioneered the neo Jam Band scene back in the late 80s and early 90s. In fact, they supported the post Garcia Jam Band scene by putting on the HORDE festival, which is the pre-cursor to Lockn' or even Bonnarroo for that matter. I've always been a fan of the band and fondly remember listening to them lots and going to see them. But it's been a while since I had, but they came through Toronto recently, after a long hiatus and wanted to catch up. Chan Kinchla, the founding guitarist made some time, which was a thrill for sure. Our conversation started when I reminded Chan of his Canadian heritage, since he was born in Hamilton, a stone's throw from Toronto. Episode 014 of *The Upful Life Podcast* welcomes the incredible Adam "Shmeeans" Smirnoff (guitarist, co-founder of Lettuce) to the show for an hour-long chat that I am quite proud of. It's no secret that Lettuce is my favorite band and has been for some time; naturally I was stoked AF to host a member on the podcast. We linked up at the phenomenal Barbarycoastcollective dab lounge for a sweet powwow on all things SMZA. SHMEEANS INTERVIEW BEGINS at 9 MINS Topics include the recent LETT run with John Scofield at SFJAZZ, as well as Lettuce's humble beginnings and the early days. We touch on Adam's reverence for the city of New Orleans and it's musical heritage, Bear Creek, self-care and staying healthy on tour, the exponential joys of parenthood and how he's Daddy DayCare when he's not on the road. We naturally pivoted to emotional conversation with regard processing a parent's passing. Very powerful passage from Adam. As we transition back to the musical landscape, Shmeeans offers poignant perspective on the term “jamband”, and traces LETT's patented hip-hop jam modus-operandi. We revisit the glorious LETT JGB set from LOCKN' 2019. I asked him to reflect on being the lone guitarist in Lettuce over the past few years, and Shmeeans reiterates his reverence and respect for former Lettuce guitarist (and co-founder) Eric Krasno. He speaks on continuing to evolve as a player in the current configuration of LETT. At the very end of the conversation, Smirnoff lets the cat out of the bag as to when the next Lettuce album will arrive (soon!), and vigorously defends NY Knicks owner James Dolan when the Sixer fan in me tried to push his buttons. I feel like Shmeeans and I only scratched the surface, but yes indeedy, this was a fantastic first chapter of LETT on *The Upful LIFE Podcast*. J.A. TALKS MOTLEY CRUE 'THE DIRT' at 1hr 8mins Another check in from Philly correspondent J.A., with regard to the brand-new motion-picture The Dirt, based on the 2001 quasi-autobiographical book about Motley Crue. J.A. and I both loved Motley in our youth, and some of our first concert experiences were with the Crue, but it didn't make this film any less troubling, or cringe-worthy. Please enjoy being a fly on the wall as two old friends look back at a shared glam-band past and discuss this long-awaited rock biopic, among other humorous asides. *Vibe Junkie JAM of the Week* is The Time's 1982 classic "777-9311" (extended mix) The Upful LIFE Podcast is available on iTunes! Aaron and Joe delve deep into their memory banks as they share tales from the many concerts and music festivals they have experienced. As a musician it is incredibly important that you attend live shows: it fuels your passion for making your own music, it helps you learn how to build set-lists to hold an audience, it's FUN, and so much more. The guys talk about seeing bands like Rush, Big Something, Dave Matthews, Tom Petty, the Black Crowes, Metallica, Megadeath, Blink 182, Tedeschi Trucks, Pat Metheny, the Yellowjackets, Tito Puente, Mark Whitfield, Mike Stern, Bon Jovi, Jeff Healey, Pearl Jam, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Hootie & The Blowfish, Billy Joel, Aerosmith, Phish, Umphrey's McGee, Jack White, Kanye West, Elton John, the Black Keys, Joe Bonamassa, Paul McCartney, Tori Amos, Iced Tea, Snoop Dog, Weezer, Stevie Nicks, Tool, Meshuggah, Yes, Gov't Mule, Prince, Danzig, Suicidal Tendencies, Flaming Lips, Skrillix, John Butler Trio, Green Sky Bluegrass, Ween, Sublime, Incubus, Cake, and many more!! When you see a live show you should keep in mind that the venue is going to dictate your experience. Often smaller venues provide a more intimate experience with the chance to really interact with the performers. Large arena concerts can be fun, but often the experience is dependent on your seats (pit vs. lawn, etc.) and the people you went with. The guys talk about specific venues from jazz clubs to warehouses to theaters to arenas. Aaron talks about his experience at the Milwaukee Metal Fest. Joe talks about the differences between the music festivals he has attended, from Bonnaroo, Firefly, Lockn, All Points West, and many local festivals. Different vibes, different lineups, different camping situations, different experiences. With so many different live music options available to us, there is no excuse to not get out there and see a show! Support your local musicians, experience a new genre of music, try camping out at a festival, or crowd surf for the first time (make sure your phone is in a secure pocket).

How to design your life around your passion? Dave Frey is among the luckiest men alive. He took his love for music to greater heights from playing in bands to promoting shows to managing the punk rock category king and now to being the CoOwner of the Lockn' Festival. "If you learn from losing, then you can win." - Dave Frey 3 Things We Learned: Music hits are typically born during the first three to five records Songwriters improve when they don't know what they are doing. Their innocence express pure and genuine emotions and/or ideas. On the other hand, familiarity with the trade allows for lackluster pieces. People can start in the music industry at such a young age and achieve unparalleled success. A lot of musicians start early in life. Passion and perseverance empower them to accomplish more than the others. Joey Ramone, for example, became an active performer during his teenage years. Creativity is possible despite the insane dysfunction One thing peculiar about The Ramones is they communicate through third parties. They never spoke with one another. Nevertheless, it did not prevent them from being creative, from amassing a solid fanbase, and from giving life to the punk rock category. Frey has an insatiable passion for music. Since childhood, he wanted to perform in a band. He'd practice many hours with his guitar and worked hard on the promotions. True enough, he landed a career with promising musicians and individuals in the industry. He believes that people have a lot to prove for themselves. Mediocrity has no room in the field of passion. Bio Dave Frey started off small, promoting his first show out of sheer necessity after his band's equipment was stolen. “So this club owner did a benefit for us, and I went to the local radio station, gave away tickets and got the guy at the paper to write it up,” he says. “The show did really well, and the guy who booked the club decided to quit. So the owner said, ‘Hey, you did a good job. Can you book the club for a couple weeks until I find a new guy?'” By 1985, Frey had relocated from his native Chicago to the Big Apple, where he took a job as a booking agent, working alongside two of the city's leading promoters, Ron Delsener, who the New York Times once referred to as “Rock's Mr. In Between.” In 1992, Frey founded Silent Partner Management, a company that's represented acts like the Ramones, a leather-clad quartet from Queens heralded as one of the pioneers of punk rock, Cheap Trick, and Blues Traveler. He teamed up with Blues Traveler for the H.O.R.D.E. (Horizons of Rock Developing Everywhere) Festival. It became a kind of rival to the more alternative swing of Lollapalooza, enjoying a seven-year run while attracting an eclectic array of performers ranging from Beck to Neil Young. Then, in 2008, Frey migrated to Charlottesville, where he and partner Peter Shapiro would soon begin planning what's likely become the largest musical gathering to hit Central Virginia, Lockn'. http://www.locknfestival.com/

After a brief music chat, Seth and Rob sit down with Andy Falco and Chris Pandolfi of the Infamous Stringdusters before The Dusters’ Atlanta show this past fall and confer on this fantastic band. Since this interview, The Stringdusters band has been nominated for a Grammy for its Laws Of Gravity release - which is also the initial topic here. The band talks about this record represents a back-to-the-core coalescence of the its previous releases and approaches. They discuss their thoughts behind the choice to wait for new songs to be released before performing them. Other decision points are analyzed, like those behind sharing songwriting credits amongst each other and efforts to make sure each member’s musical voice is heard equally on each release and/or performance. The hosts and guests acknowledge the varying parameters of bluegrass, and the extent to which The Stringdusters feel compelled to adhere to them. We learn the importance of capturing the “expression factor” of each player, and how the lyrical and historical context of each song ultimately informs the performance. A discussion about the band’s Ladies and Gentlemen release leads to Nicki Bluhm. Nicki hooked the band up with Ryan Adams, and these two Dusters share some Ryan stories including how they prepared for the tour, their first performance with him, a spontaneous Black Sabbath cover, how Ryan “went to bat” for them on Colbert and some funny Ryan crowd interactions. Before Chris had to depart he discussed his thoughts behind his famous “Bluegrass Manifesto,” and how it attracted the ire of many bluegrass purists. Chris acknowledges that he was inspired by Bela Fleck to play bluegrass in the first place, and he denies that the “infamous” part of the band’s name was by design. When the focus shifts to Andy, we find out that he was in many New York bands including the Water Street Blues Band. He talks about how David Bromberg and Buddy Merriam stoked the fire of his interest in acoustic music, and how Merriam essentially taught him how to play bluegrass. We find out how Andy ended up meeting the Stringdusters’ guys and how he found his way in the band. Andy also shares some of his Stringdusters experiences, including the preparation for and execution of their Lockn set with Page McConnell and Phil Lesh. Then Seth and Rob take us home with a conversation of their own which starts with a discussion of the interview and then many music topics including the Dead and Company show the hosts had seen together just before completing this episode. wTnS is Produced by Rob Turner and Engineered by Josh Thane of Wonder Dog Sounds Studio. www.joshthaneproductions.com www.wonderdogsounds.com Inside Out w/ Turner and Seth: insideoutwtns.com Twitter: @InsideoutWTNS Instagram: www.instagram.com/insideoutwtns Facebook: www.facebook.com/insideoutwTnS See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
Pigeons Playing Ping Pong are all about raw, emotional fun. I really dig their sound and you will to. Like most jam bands today, they blend all kinds of genres but they are rooted in a very sassy funk groove. We recently sat down with front man Greg Ormont to talk about their upcoming release Pizazz and a whole lot more. The conversation started just after I watched their Lockn’ set, and I asked Greg to recall how awesome that set was…… You can listen to this episode below, or by connecting and subscribing to one of the podcast platforms here or search your favorite podcast platform for “The Sound Podcast”; Itunes: http://bit.ly/sndpodi TuneIn: http://bit.ly/sndti Stitcher: http://bit.ly/sndsti GooglePlay: http://bit.ly/sndplay Get The Sound Podcast App: http://bit.ly/TSPAPPS See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
Seth and Rob revel in Seth’s return to Atlanta before discussing Bob Dylan, recent online music articles, and their interview with Chris Kuroda at Lockn' a few months ago. This episodes shares clips of from said interview, first about how Kuroda learned many things on the fly in his early days with Phish, and how his responsibilities became more focused during these years. Hear him rave about his programmer Andrew Giffin, who provides Kuroda great flexibility as Giffin can adjust the console (by doing things like re-writing code at the root level) to fit CK’s ever-evolving and exacting needs. Kuroda also discusses how his familiarity with Madison Square Garden may increasingly benefit Phish shows there moving forward, as he now has access to house lights located all over the room, “we plan on really digging into that now that I have a lot of programming for it.” This is surely great news for anyone holding tickets to any……or ALL of the band’s forthcoming “Baker’s Dozen” run of shows at this iconic venue." The bulk of the original interview focuses on the details around Kuroda and the band’s decision last year to incorporate video elements into their already-superb presentation, and how Kuroda executed this transition – please visit Episode 18 to hear the entire original interview. Before signing off Seth and Rob discuss Brandi Carlile’s performances at The Avett Brothers At The Beach, their destination festival in Mexico, and where they want to interview Jason Isbell and Oteil Burbridge in the future. This episode features Rob and Seth backstage at Lockn' chatting with Chris Kuroda, one of the leading Lighting Designers in the music industry most well-known for his long-time work (nearly 30 years) brilliantly scheming and executing the visual presentation of the band Phish. They discuss how adding video elements to the band's already-elite light show presented many challenges and much inspiration to Kuroda. He talks about how he worked with other industry veterans, particularly Abigail Holmes (Roger Waters, The Cure, Talking Heads) to find the best ways to ease the video elements into the presentation to find the appropriate "vibe" design-wise and how his approach to execution is currently evolving greatly. Kuroda also explains why white is "his 11," and discusses how his relationship with Madison Square Garden has spilled over into the sports world, and how this may positively impact future Phish MSG performances.
