Jamband alert for this week's episode with Jen Meyerhardt!! Jen is co-owner and co-producer of Northlands Music and Arts Festival taking place June 14-15 in Swanzey, NH and talked to me about her impressive history in the legal jungle and how that prepared her for the live events production world.A native of New Canaan, CT, with a law degree and years of experience in Silicon Valley, Jen is also a long-time jamband fan and lover of live music, who now brings her impressive life experiences and go-getter attitude to even greater heights. We talked what it means to truly lean into her lifelong passion for live music to bring some of the industry's premier jam bands to play a humble New Hampshire hamlet year after year. It's an inspiring story of following one's dream, listening to the music play, and heeding the call to see where it all may take you. Jen's long strange trip serves as an inspiration to all, while perhaps more importantly, her journey represents a shining beacon and role model for diversity and women's representation at the highest level of live music events, and I'm all about it!! Welcome to a bonus episode of That's How I Remember It. This episode was recorded live at the Wythe Hotel in Brooklyn the first night of the Hold Steady's annual Massive Nights celebration in November 2023. The first guest is Peter Shapiro, stellar music promoter, owner of the Brooklyn Bowls, former owner of The Wetlands music club, the list goes on. We talked about his philosophies about multi-night events, leaving early, playing zone defense and his first show at Wetlands. After Pete, we visited with Michael Hann, a music writer based in the UK who authored The Gospel of The Hold Steady book that came out in 2023. Michael is a longtime friend and fan of the band and we spoke of surprises in the book, favorite THS shows, first meetings, etc. Throughout it all I check in with my bandmates in THS to hear their recollections of 2023, our 20th year as a band. This was a great event, and it's a lot of fun to revisit it on the eve of the THS Weekender 2024 shows in London this weekend.

Relix Magazine Publisher and New York music promotor Peter Shapiro shares a special voicemail from the late great David Crosby of CSNY and discusses touring with the Grateful Dead, what's it like voting in The Rock & Roll Hall of Fame and more over bourbon. Peter Shapiro Bio Peter Shapiro is a veteran concert promoter whose signature achievements over the past two decades have included Wetlands Preserve, Brooklyn Bowl, the Capitol Theatre, the Lockn' festival, U2 3D, the Jammy Awards, and Fare Thee Well, the 2015 concert event in which he reunited the "core four" members of the Grateful Dead alongside Phish guitarist Trey Anastasio for a record-breaking run of stadium shows. More recently, Shapiro founded Lockn', a music and camping festival that draws 30,000 music fans to Arrington, VA, as well as Jazz & Colors, an experiential event that he has produced in Central Park, the Metropolitan Museum of Art and Chicago's Field Museum. Shapiro also created the Green Apple Festival (which took place simultaneously across eight cities) along with the Jammy Awards. He served as a producer on the We Are One inaugural concert and later returned to the National Mall to oversee Earth Day 40th anniversary celebration, the Women's March and the March for Science.
As part of our Earth Day celebration in partnership with Studio Green @ ASCAP, we talk to James Valentine, founding member, songwriter and lead guitarist for one of the biggest bands on the planet - three-time Grammy Award winners Maroon 5. James's work with the band has led to more than 135 million albums sold and created a steady stream of hit singles, including “She Will Be Loved,” “This Love,” “Payphone,” “Moves Like Jagger,” “Maps,” “Sugar” and more. James also serves as an advisory board member for REVERB, the non-profit environmental advocacy organization made up of music creators and music lovers who are working to create a better future for people and the planet through actions on the road, at concerts and beyond. James discusses how he and Maroon 5 have worked with REVERB on tour since 2005 and how REVERB artist expeditions to the rainforests of Guatemala and Peru has helped him raise awareness about the harmful effects of deforestation on people and the environment. We also talk to independent music entrepreneur, author and Relix magazine publisher Peter Shapiro and how he has made sustainability a core part of his career, from creating and owning music venues like Brooklyn Bowl to producing over 10,000 shows, including concerts such as 2015's Fare Thee Well: Celebrating 50 Years of the Grateful Dead and 2010's Earth Day 40th Anniversary climate rally and concert featuring The Roots on the National Mall. Find out the latest on Maroon 5 Welcome to Studio Green @ ASCAP Check out REVERB, leaders of the green music movement Watch excerpts from Instruments of Change

The Music Never Stops: What Putting on 10,000 Shows Has Taught Me About Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Magic
Chances are, if you put on, promote or produce something like 10,000 live concerts, you're going to learn a few things. Just ask Peter Shapiro. The owner and operator of the Brooklyn Bowl venues, the legendary Capitol Theatre, and before that, the Wetlands Preserve, Shapiro is all of that … and also a Deadhead, a fact that is relevant because were it not for the Grateful Dead, he probably would never have gotten his start in the venue business at all. His book, “The Music Never Stops,” came out earlier this year, a chronicle of 50 pivotal shows that helped define Shapiro's life, his ethos — and his businesses. We have a lot to discuss. And there is so much more.In “The Music Never Stops”, Shapiro with the help of author Dean Budnick, shares the inside story of how he became a power-house in the music industry—an island in an increasingly consolidated landscape of venues, ticketing, and touring—through the lens of fifty iconic concerts. Along the way, readers gain insight into what it was like to work with some of the most celebrated bands in modern music, including not just the Grateful Dead and U2, but also Bob Dylan, Phish, Dave Matthews Band, Al Green, Ms. Lauryn Hill, Jason Isbell, Preservation Hall Jazz Band, The Roots, Robert Plant, Leonard Cohen, and many more.Featuring never-before-published back-stage anecdotes, insights, and photographs of the biggest bands in the business and the concerts that later became legendary, “The Music Never Stops” is a perfect guide for any-one who wants to understand the modern live music industry.Purchase a copy of "The Music Never Stops: What Putting on 10,000 Shows Has Taught Me About Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Magic" through Hachette Books: www.hachettebooks.com/titles/peter-shapiro/the-music-never-stops/9780306845178Listen to a playlist of the music discussed in this episode: https://open.spotify.com/playlist/3yY6OsLF8wPsR47hAHldLg?si=4117481ca35e4c58The Booked On Rock Website: www.bookedonrock.comFollow The Booked On Rock with Eric Senich:FACEBOOK: www.facebook.com/bookedonrockpodcastTWITTER: https://twitter.com/bookedonrockINSTAGRAM: www.instagram.com/bookedonrockpodcast/?hl=enSupport Your Local Bookstore! March 3, 1993 at the Rosemont Horizon in Chicago, Ilinois, may go down as one of the most important dates in modern Jam Band history. The Grateful Dead performed that night in the Windy City and said venue and noted promoter, club owner, philanthropist, activist and raconteur Peter Shapiro was in attendance, at the first Dead show he ever attended. He recently published a memoir of his life's work to date in a must read book “The Music Never Stops…” co-penned by Dean Budnick the editor at Relix Magazine. I've always been intrigued by Peter Shapiro's efforts to bring quality music to live audiences. Up until recently I've had a very general periphery idea of his accomplishments, but after reading his book, I needed to know more, directly from Peter himself… First song: Grateful Dead - 03-11-93 - Help on the Way > Slipknot > Franklin's Tower - Rosemont Horizon - Chicago, IL Second song: Phil Lesh and Friends - 07-22-13 - Pride of Cucamonga - The Capitol Theatre - Port Chester, NY Third song: Joe Russo's Almost Dead - 02-10-22 - Feel Like a Stranger - Brooklyn Bowl - Philadelphia, PA See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Welcome to Roadcase!! We are totally pumped to have PR Master Greg Knight on the show! Greg handles communications for the band Goose, Pigeons Playing Ping Pong, and Twiddle to name just a few. In addition to being a wonderful human and live music maven, Greg's PR skills are second-to-none, and his rise within the Goose organization is equal parts inspirational and a tale of "being in the right place at the right time," in his own words. But that doesn't tell the whole story; Greg is an incredibly hard worker, who not only reps the fastest rising band in the jam community, but also tirelessly supports music education throughout the New York area through his work with Turnaround Arts, a NY-based non-profit organization. Greg is simply a stellar human and an engaging personality to boot with many tales from the road as well as from the trenches. Welcome to Roadcase!! Mikaela Davis is a classically trained harpist with a gorgeous voice who performs with her band, Southern Star. Her 2018 debut album, Delivery, was produced by Grammy-winner John Congleton and is a super-groovy collection of songs, and we're pleased to report that a new album is due for release later this year, along with a new live album as well. Mikaela has also been incorporating Grateful Dead covers into her live set for quite some time now, and her Tiny Desk appearance accompanying Bob Weir and Wolf Bros is epic and extraordinary. She has been embraced in a unique way by the jam band community and rightly so, but Mikaela and Southern Star have a new and unique vibe that transcends categorization into any jam band category, and Mikaela's gentle and easy-going vibe makes her story even more intriguing. So hop aboard the Roadcase bus to learn what's up with harpist and extraordinary vocalist Mikaela Davis. Today we pay homage to Nelly..... Cornell Iral Haynes Jr. (born November 2, 1974), known professionally as Nelly, is an American rapper, singer, songwriter, entrepreneur, investor, and occasional actor from St. Louis, Missouri. Nelly embarked on his music career with Midwest hip hop group St. Lunatics in 1993 and signed to Universal Records in 1999. Under Universal, Nelly began his solo career in the year 2000, with his debut album Country Grammar, of which the featured title-track and the single "Ride wit Me" were top ten hits. The album debuted at number three on the Billboard 200 and went on to peak at number one. Country Grammar is Nelly's best-selling album to date, selling over 8.4 million copies in the United States.[3] His following album, Nellyville, produced the number-one hits "Hot in Herre" and "Dilemma" (featuring Kelly Rowland). Other singles included "Work It" (featuring Justin Timberlake), "Air Force Ones" (featuring Murphy Lee and St. Lunatics), "Pimp Juice" and "#1". With the same-day dual release of Sweat, Suit (2004) and the compilation Sweatsuit (2006), Nelly continued to generate many chart-topping hits. Sweat debuted at number two on the US Billboard 200 chart, selling 342,000 copies in its first week. In the same week of release, Suit debuted at number one, selling around 396,000 copies in its first week on the same chart. Nelly's fifth studio album, Brass Knuckles, was released on September 16, 2008, after several delays. It produced the singles "Party People" (featuring Fergie), "Stepped on My J'z" (featuring Jermaine Dupri and Ciara) and "Body on Me" (featuring Akon and Ashanti). In 2010, Nelly released the album 5.0. The lead single, "Just a Dream", was certified triple platinum in the United States. It included the singles "Move That Body" (featuring T-Pain and Akon) and "Gone" (a sequel to the 2002 single "Dilemma" in collaboration with Kelly Rowland). Nelly won Grammy Awards in 2003 and 2004 and had a supporting role in the 2005 remake film The Longest Yard with Adam Sandler and Chris Rock. He has two clothing lines, Vokal and Apple Bottoms. He has been referred to by Peter Shapiro as "one of the biggest stars of the new millennium",[4] and the RIAA ranks Nelly as the fourth best-selling rap artist in American music history,[5] with 21 million albums sold in the United States. How to design your life around your passion? Dave Frey is among the luckiest men alive. He took his love for music to greater heights from playing in bands to promoting shows to managing the punk rock category king and now to being the CoOwner of the Lockn' Festival. "If you learn from losing, then you can win." - Dave Frey 3 Things We Learned: Music hits are typically born during the first three to five records Songwriters improve when they don't know what they are doing. Their innocence express pure and genuine emotions and/or ideas. On the other hand, familiarity with the trade allows for lackluster pieces. People can start in the music industry at such a young age and achieve unparalleled success. A lot of musicians start early in life. Passion and perseverance empower them to accomplish more than the others. Joey Ramone, for example, became an active performer during his teenage years. Creativity is possible despite the insane dysfunction One thing peculiar about The Ramones is they communicate through third parties. They never spoke with one another. Nevertheless, it did not prevent them from being creative, from amassing a solid fanbase, and from giving life to the punk rock category. Frey has an insatiable passion for music. Since childhood, he wanted to perform in a band. He'd practice many hours with his guitar and worked hard on the promotions. True enough, he landed a career with promising musicians and individuals in the industry. He believes that people have a lot to prove for themselves. Mediocrity has no room in the field of passion. Bio Dave Frey started off small, promoting his first show out of sheer necessity after his band's equipment was stolen. “So this club owner did a benefit for us, and I went to the local radio station, gave away tickets and got the guy at the paper to write it up,” he says. “The show did really well, and the guy who booked the club decided to quit. So the owner said, ‘Hey, you did a good job. Can you book the club for a couple weeks until I find a new guy?'” By 1985, Frey had relocated from his native Chicago to the Big Apple, where he took a job as a booking agent, working alongside two of the city's leading promoters, Ron Delsener, who the New York Times once referred to as “Rock's Mr. In Between.” In 1992, Frey founded Silent Partner Management, a company that's represented acts like the Ramones, a leather-clad quartet from Queens heralded as one of the pioneers of punk rock, Cheap Trick, and Blues Traveler. He teamed up with Blues Traveler for the H.O.R.D.E. (Horizons of Rock Developing Everywhere) Festival. It became a kind of rival to the more alternative swing of Lollapalooza, enjoying a seven-year run while attracting an eclectic array of performers ranging from Beck to Neil Young. Then, in 2008, Frey migrated to Charlottesville, where he and partner Peter Shapiro would soon begin planning what's likely become the largest musical gathering to hit Central Virginia, Lockn'. http://www.locknfestival.com/
In this retrospective episode, legendary Grateful Dead lighting designer Candace Brightman discusses her 40+ year career lighting live music and explains her design process through four decades of technological evolution. She also reflects on being a woman in a male dominated industry and the role psychedelics played in her career. Her and host Luke Stratton discuss how she accidentally started working in the music industry, and what it was like working for such icons artists including the Dead, Santana, Bette Midler, Widespread Panic, and the GD50 Fare Thee Well shows. This episode also includes a brief phone interview with GD50 promoter and Capital Theater owner Peter Shapiro, who recalls the impact Brightman's work had on both the band and other designers… and he settles the “Santa Clara Rainbow Rumor” once and for all.
Welcome to episode #90, today’s guest has been on my radar for quite some time and it brings me great pleasure to share our interview with all of you. It’s almost impossible to be a fan of music and not know the name Peter Shapiro. Chances are you’ve heard of places like Wetlands Preserve, The Capitol Theater, and Brooklyn Bowl. You may even be familiar with Relix Magazine, originally launched in 1974, which focuses on live music, festivals, artist interviews, etc. If the aforementioned still doesn’t ring a bell, I’m sure you know the names Jerry Garcia and Bob Weir. Peter Shapiro is at the center of all of those things and many more. He is also a master at creating the right “vibes” for the right moment. Thanks for tuning-in, Peace ya’all. Today’s episode is sponsored by Telefunken Elektroakustic, and Airturn.

THURSDAY night @ 8 EST Scott Cluthe talks with author Peter David Shapiro about his new book, Ghosts on the Red Line. www.ghostsontheredline.com Peter David Shapiro was born in Montreal, Canada. After graduating from college, he carried a Hermes Baby typewriter to Europe to get started on his first novel. He arrived with his typewriter in Torremolinos, Spain, a coastal resort town, where he began in his tiny beachside hotel room to put words on paper. Not so easy to do, he discovered. Putting aside his dream of writing novels, he shipped his typewriter back home. Later, however, after seeing the world as a management consultant at one of the premier consulting firms, he returned to the task. By then, he’d moved to the Boston area and become a frequent rider on Boston’s Red Line subway trains, where commuters see their Departed in his first novel GHOSTS ON THE RED LINE. By then, also, he’d spent time in fascinating Hong Kong, where a story of intrigue and revenge unfolds as told in THE TRAIL OF MONEY. Both novels feature as a main protagonist Harry Forrest West, by amazing coincidence also a management consultant. Currently he’s working on his third novel, which has something to do with psychics, and practicing his flute.
Join the Positively Incorrect! Newsletter Carmen Harra's On Line Hay House Seminar on Relationships Begins July 16th-Register Here & get a Free Book and 20 Min Consultation at No Additional Cost ! Peter Shapiro, author of Ghosts on The Red Line, is re-scheduled for Thursday Julyy 1tth 8 PM EST. With the release of the blockbuster film Inception, dreams, the world of Lucid Dreams and perhaps also entering the dreams of others is very much in the public conversation. Scott Cluthe interviews one of the world-recognized experts on lucid dreaming, Robert Waggonner. Author of Lucid Dreaming, Robert Waggoner, is past President of the International Association for the Study of Dreams (IASD) . For the past ten years, he has been the co-editor of the online magazine, The Lucid Dream Exchange, the only ongoing publication devoted specifically to lucid dreaming. Robert has a regular show on Iowa Public Radio, discussing dreams and lucid dreams. Robert frequently speaks on lucid dreaming at national and international dream conferences, workshops and college classrooms, like Sonoma State University, Iowa State University, University of Washington and Evergreen State College. More than 30 years ago, the author taught himself a simple technique to become consciously aware in the dream state. Since that time, lucid dreaming, or the ability to become consciously aware while dreaming, has been proven by the pioneering research of Dr. Keith Hearne, University of Hull, and Dr. Stephen LaBerge at Stanford. Lucid dreaming is a revolutionary psychological tool. Now, western science has a new means to experiment and investigate the deeper aspects of the dream state and the mind, while consciously aware.
