In this gripping and emotional episode of Persistence U with Lizbeth, Elishaba Doerksen joins from Alaska to share her extraordinary journey from unimaginable trauma to fierce independence. Born into a secluded, abusive family cult with 14 siblings and a father who claimed spiritual authority to justify horrific abuse, Elishaba was raised without education, freedom, or safety. At 29, she found the courage to escape, risking everything to save her life—and eventually, her siblings'. Elishaba shares the pivotal moment that gave her the strength to flee: a Bible verse, a glimmer of hope, and the belief that she was not forsaken. She recounts the challenges of adjusting to the outside world with no formal education, no job experience, and no understanding of basic life skills. Now a speaker, survivor, mother, and author of Out of the Wilderness, Elishaba talks about the emotional cost of leaving an abusive marriage, co-parenting with courage, and raising her children with the tools and freedom she never had. Even while undergoing treatment for stage 4 brain cancer, she continues to share her story to light the way for others. If you've ever felt silenced by shame, isolated by abuse, or unsure how to start over—this episode will remind you that your past does not define your future. You Will Learn:How Elishaba found the strength to escape a dangerous family cult and start a new lifeWhy coercive control can happen inside families—not just intimate partnershipsHow reclaiming your voice is possible, even after trauma, poverty, and illness
In this powerful and heartwarming episode, I sit down with two incredible P&PA (Pregnancy and Postpartum Athleticism) coaches — Katie Doerksen and Julie Chutter — to highlight how they've each built meaningful coaching practices while honoring their roles as mothers and leaders in their communities. Katie, a mom of three from rural Alberta, opens up about her transition from kindergarten teacher to strength coach and co-founder of Girls Who Lead — a program blending leadership development and physical literacy for young girls. She shares how she's helping the next generation understand their bodies and embrace movement in a way that builds confidence for life. Julie, a mom of two based in Vancouver, shares how her background in spin and boxing led her to launching postpartum fitness classes — babies welcome — in a jiu-jitsu studio. We talk about building community, finding your rhythm during those chaotic early postpartum months, and how her business background has helped her thrive while staying present with her family. We reflect on the real-life challenges of motherhood, the drive that comes with “athlete brain,” and the power of creating supportive, judgment-free spaces for women in every season of life. Kate Doerksen, co-founder of Sage Haven, appears on Scrolling 2 Death to share insights from her research on tech challenges families are facing. After witnessing her family member suffer from a mental health crisis caused by bullying and harmful social media interactions, Kate interviewed hundreds of parents, youth, and child psychologists to try to find a solution to the harms of the current digital landscape.Key themes indicate families struggle with screen addiction and screen-time disputes. A surprising discovery shows that kids are messaging online as early as second grade. Despite not having a phone, they access YouTube and messages from family tablets and smartwatches. These activities may seem harmless, but parental supervision and guidance is key - especially at a young age. Kate believes parents need help creating a slow, safe onramp to technology for their children. That's why Kate created Sage Chat, a new app that will give kids a safer way to message and empower parents to take a phased approach to supervising online activity. Come, now is the time to worship, is a worship song popularized in the 90's with its anthem, "Come now is the time to worship, come now is the time to give your heart, come just as you are to worship." Have you ever felt like you had nothing left to give just worn utterly thin? Doerksen described the song's roots as a time in a dark season just barely hanging onto his faith and God drew his mind to that phrase "now is the time to worship!" In Psalms 95, 96, & 100 we see that engaging call to worship. Not fully exhaustive, but many of the action words found in those Psalms are as follows: Sing, Shout, Bless, Proclaim, Declare, Honor, Praise, Fear, Give, Sacrifice, Worship and Tremble. Worship means to ascribe worth or value to something. We are going to dig into Psalms 95 and see the description of how we should present ourselves to, and ascribe worth to a worthy God.

In this one, Cody talks with Elishaba Doerksen, the oldest daughter of fundamentalist Robert Hale, better known as Papa Pilgrim. In 2000, the Hale family — consisting of Papa Pilgrim, his wife and 15 kids — moved from the Rocky Mountains of New Mexico to a homestead in the Wrangell–St. Elias National Park and Preserve in Alaska. It's the largest area managed by the National Park Service, with over 13 million acres of land. In that park and on that homestead, Papa Pilgrim inflicted sadistic physical, mental and sexual abuse onto his family. Elishaba, the oldest of the 15 siblings, endured the brunt of that abuse. To the point where he was planning on starting another family in the woods with Elishaba as his wife. He was gathering scripture so that he could biblically justify the decision. That's when Elishaba — at 29 years old — decided to escape on a snowmachine. The decision to tell her story wasn't an easy one. At first, it felt like she was betraying her family by telling all their secrets because that's what Papa Pilgrim had brought her up to believe. More often than not, she believed that by taking her father's abuse, she was sparing her mother and her siblings from abuse. It was her job to make him happy and if she didn't do that, then her father would set his sights on others. All that pain would be detailed in a book called “Out of the Wilderness,” but it would take 11 years before she felt comfortable enough to share her story publicly. Now she believes in the positive repercussions of telling her story: That pain is a gift. It's a bridge. It's something that helps us understand one another and it opens a door for relationships and forgiveness. And forgiveness, well, that's letting go of the debt that that person owes you.
How do we go about decision-making in pregnancy and parenthood? Do we float along on the wave of current culture, or is there possibly another way? This week we're speaking with Caitlyn Doerksen, a wife of almost seven years, a mom of 3 kids, who is passionate about all things surrounding the home. Home schooling, home birth, and a dream to one day soon home stead. She has such a beautiful way of looking at and interacting with her family, and I know you're going to gain so much insight from this incredible episode. Episode Roundup: It's okay to do things differently from other families and to focus on works in your family's culture. Just because your aunt or mother in law or neighbor did things one way doesn't mean you have to follow suit. It's not disrespectful to choose your own path. I'm sure many of you resonate with that already– I mean, we've probably all had the experience of a little backlash to our birthing decisions, am I right? Next, I loved the way Caitlyn truly tuned into her intuition. She didn't push the voice away, she leaned in and listened harder. She had her husband pray over her and encourage her, and together they worked on honing in on their God-given parental intuitions. We were designed to disciple our babies, and when we tune out the noise and tune into what is working for our family, I think we often times do know how to do that so beautifully well. And finally, let's discuss the beautiful balance of Caitlyn's births. What did we learn? Well, we learned that birth CAN be exactly what you want, pray for, ask for, envision, meditate upon… It can be. There is so much power and excitement and thrill in that! It happened for Caitlyn three times, despite difficult external circumstances with her most recent birth. And now… on to the flip side. Not everyone is going to experience this, and if your mind is SET on having a very specific experience that does not pan out that way, it can sometimes lead to disappointment or a fear that maybe you didn't do something right, or you didn't deserve a good birth or, or, or. And just like Caitlyn so beautifully affirmed, that is straight up false. I like to remind myself that every birth has a lesson for us. Sometimes those lessons go down easy like a spoonful of honey, and others feel a bit more abrasive. But, no matter the specific events our birth holds, please remember… we are the one who chooses how we get to integrate the experience. We can choose what our birth means to us, and we can choose to approach birth with the knowledge that however it unfolds, there is beauty in it. I hope that makes sense. Every mother, every baby, every labor are different. But whatever our labor brings us, we can take those lessons and apply them to our lives, to our motherhood, to grow and stretch us in the most beautiful ways.
