Send us a textA plate of pancakes became the catalyst for a nationwide veterans support movement in this remarkable story of love, legacy, and service. After Susan Combs' father, Major General Roger Combs—who served 39 years across three military branches—developed Agent Orange-related cancer, one poignant morning changed everything. Unable to eat due to his feeding tube, he simply stated: "I want pancakes for breakfast." This heartbreaking moment eventually sparked what would become Pancakes for Roger, a nonprofit creating pathways to improve veterans' lives.Susan shares the raw emotional journey from personal grief to purposeful action. What began as a social media tribute evolved into an annual February campaign where pancake photos trigger donations supporting veterans' causes, most notably the University of Missouri Veterans Legal Clinic providing free legal services for VA claims. Their latest campaign generated an impressive $13,000 and drew participation from all 50 states and six continents.Beyond fundraising, Pancakes for Roger partners with smaller veteran organizations where modest financial support creates outsized impact. From construction projects for disabled veterans to mental health crisis support through QRF Up, these collaborations address immediate needs without bureaucratic delays. Susan's philosophy resonates throughout: "Small nonprofits can change lives with $2,000 that would barely register at a large foundation."The organization's future looks promising with weightlifting competitions dubbed "Dragon Slayer" events, community outreach initiatives, and plans to establish an endowment for veteran micro-grants. Susan's book, "Pancakes for Roger: A Mentorship Guide for Slaying Dragons," furthers her father's legacy through wisdom and life lessons while generating additional support for veterans' causes.Want to transform breakfast into meaningful change? Visit pancakesforroger.org to learn how you can host a pancake event, donate to their mission, or connect veterans with crucial resources. Together, we can ensure veterans receive the support, recognition, and community they've earned through their service.

Why are we only championing terribly flawed and ruthless men?Undeterred, and unaccepting of the notion of "the human condition," I never lost my own personal faith in mankind. There had to be a noble, family oriented, just, and fair people somewhere. I got tipped off by another reader of history, and I was determined to find out if untainted roots of man were to be found in this group of people. What I found revitalized me. My quest had led to the Goths, and their history, our history, our heritage, has been deliberately stolen, co-opted, inverted, slandered, and often completely erased from the record. What I didn't find in those dark grimoires they pass off as religion I found in the histories of the Men from the North, the bringers of culture, civilization, and innovation. These were the creators of a Noble culture. And they battled many of the dark forces that have since regained a stranglehold over Man through their tactics of moral erosion, artificial social constructs, and cunning treachery. These are the culture destroyers. They were a despicable death cult then, and they're a despicable death cult now.LOAD UP for Christmas:https://SemperFryLLC.com to get Priestcraft: Beyond Babylon, AWESOME Hot Sauce and Creatine-HCL. Erik Jensen grew up in New Jersey. As a young person he loved monster movies. For a time he considered pursuing a career as a veterinarian. But when his friend Chris Walas moved out to Los Angeles to pursue a career in the movie FX business, Erik wasn't too far behind. In Hollywood Erik worked on several low budget horror movies honing his skills and making connections. It was a small community and led to working with Rob Bottin on some projects, including John Carpenter's 1982 remake "The Thing". Erik worked in both production and as an artist. Erik's work landed him a job on Dragonslayer at ILM where he would work on multiple projects for more than 20 years. HIs list of credits are amazing and include; Young Sherlock Holmes, Star Trek IV, Ghostbusters II, Star Wars: Episode 1, Space Cowboys, AI, Peter Pan, Star Wars: Episode III, and Jarhead. He also left ILM to work at Skellington on The Nightmare Before Christmas and James and the Giant Peach. He later worked at TraumaFX building realistic task trainers for both human and K9 simulators for emergency medical training. Today Erik is retired and lives with his wife being an active grandparent. It was great fun talking with Erik about his life and incredible career (which is obvious as this is a long one).

In supporter Mike's last pick and appearance he went with a classic 90's British flick, Trainspotting. And this time he's swung the dial to little renowned sword and sorcery adventure, Dragonslayer! Dragonslayer (1981) was an ambitious collaboration between Paramount Pictures and Walt Disney Productions, marking a rare foray into darker, more mature fantasy for Disney. Directed by Matthew Robbins, the film was developed as a gritty and realistic take on medieval mythology, deviating from the lighter tone often associated with fantasy films of the time. The screenplay, written by Robbins and Hal Barwood, aimed to explore themes of faith, power, and heroism. Principal photography took place in the rugged landscapes of Wales and Scotland, chosen for their authentic medieval atmosphere, and the production faced significant challenges in capturing the epic scope of the story while dealing with unpredictable weather and remote locations. The standout feature of the film was its groundbreaking special effects, particularly the creation of the dragon, Vermithrax Pejorative. To bring the creature to life, the production team employed a combination of animatronics, puppetry, and the pioneering go-motion technique developed by Industrial Light & Magic (ILM). This approach allowed for smoother, more lifelike movements than traditional stop-motion animation. Phil Tippett, the lead visual effects artist, played a crucial role in crafting Vermithrax, which has since been hailed as one of the most convincing cinematic dragons ever created. Despite mixed reviews upon release, Dragonslayer gained a cult following and remains a landmark in special effects innovation, bridging the gap between the practical techniques of the past and the CGI-dominated future of filmmaking. Armed with his late master's enchanted amulet and his growing confidence, Galen ventures into danger, facing the dragon's fiery wrath and uncovering political intrigue that reveals the kingdom's rulers have sinister motives of their own. Combining themes of heroism, faith, and sacrifice, the film delivers a gritty, visually striking fantasy tale that stands out for its groundbreaking special effects and its unflinching portrayal of medieval darkness. thevhsstrikesback@gmail.com https://linktr.ee/vhsstrikesback --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/thevhsstrikesback/support

Dragons are cool, aren't they? That's our subject for today, specifically the giant, monstrous beasties of myth, fantasy, and legend. They can be evil, they can be clever, they can be animalistic and wild, they can be friendly, they can be wise and all knowing, there's absolutely no common personality to dragons at all. There's this old idea that there are “Western” and “Eastern” dragons in myth, that is simply nonsense and just a relic of an older way of looking at the world. The truth is that dragons are present in most cultures in some form. Famous dragons in myth are the ancient Germanic creatures like Jörmungand, Níðhöggr, or the dragons fought by Beowulf and Siegfried. There's the famous dragon that was slain by Saint George, the godly Celtic dragon that adorns the Welsh flag, there are many wise demigod Greek dragons, as well as the more animalistic Hydra. There's Tiamat from Mesopotamia, a more godly creature, and speaking of gods there's the Rainbow serpent from the Australian indigenous cultures who created all the world! The Mayans had Quetzalcoatl with its rainbow body and beautiful feathered wings. Then we have all the dragons from East Asia and Southeast Asia who can be outright godly and imperial or simply associated with elemental aspects of the landscape but this is barely scratching the surface. Dragons in culture are FAR richer than “East Vs West”. What from do they take though, what defines are dragon? Well most dragons are serpentine and reptilian in form, with scales, large teeth, and an elongated body. they often have four limbs with claws, a pointed tail, and sometimes even wings, usually bat style but sometimes feathered. Those are not needed for a creature to BE a dragon though, the long serpentine form is enough. Dragons in modern pop-culture fantasy tend to have a long tail long neck, scales, a head covered in horns and or fins, a big body with four limbs, and a large pair of bat wings. They can be anything from cat sized to the size of a continent but are usually the size of a big house. Fantasy gave us many notable dragons and fantasy art really lit my young brain aflame, with the wonderful imagery by the likes of Michael Whelen, David Roe, and so many more. As a child I was captivated by an image of “Smaug” on the cover of an ‘80s printing of Lord of the Rings. Later I was fascinated by the dragons in the stories by Ursula K. Le Guin, Anne McCaffery, Katherine Kerr, Terry Patchett, Gordon R Dickson and more. I'm sure many have fond memories of Dungeons and Dragons and the book series Dragonlance. Not to mention the great movies like Dragonslayer, How to train your Dragon, Dragonheart, A flight of Dragons, Raya the Last Dragon, The Hobbit, Reign of Fire, Jabberwocky, Game of Thrones and more. Then of course there are human dragons! There were some dragons in myth that could take human form. Draco, who we get the name of “draconian” laws from was a Greek fellow with a draconian name. Vlad the Impaler's dad is supposed to have earned the title of “Dragon”, which is why we call him Dracula (son of the dragon) and where we get the fantasy horror vampire creature's name “Count Dracula”. A “dragon” in modern Greece is a particularly evil type of criminal (which I won't discuss here). A Dragon in US business language is a powerful investor. And a dragon-lady is usually a very intimidating and powerful Chinese woman. But my favourite human dragon is Haku from Spirited Away. What is YOUR fave dragon? Is it from myth or fantasy? Do you even like dragons at all? This week we have another best off from Gunwallace. Welcome to another episode of The Video Store Podcast. Are you ready for some recommendations? This week, I am focusing on films that are perfect for anyone looking for some Dungeons & Dragons inspiration. I have got four fantastic picks: "Hawk the Slayer" (1980), "Dragonslayer" (1981), "The Sword and the Sorcerer" (1982), and "The Dungeonmaster" (1984).First up is "Hawk the Slayer." This 1980 fantasy film directed by Terry Marcel is a great watch for those who enjoy classic sword and sorcery adventures. The story follows Hawk, played by John Terry, on his quest to defeat the evil Voltan, portrayed by Jack Palance. The film stands out for its creative use of special effects, particularly for its time. It's a cult favorite and a prime example of low-budget fantasy done right. Thanks for reading Video Store Podcast! Subscribe for free to receive new posts and support our work.Next, we have "Dragonslayer" from 1981. Directed by Matthew Robbins, this movie features groundbreaking special effects that earned it an Academy Award nomination. The story revolves around a young sorcerer's apprentice, played by Peter MacNicol, who sets out to slay a dragon. The dragon, Vermithrax Pejorative, remains one of the most impressive and realistic dragons ever put to film. The combination of practical effects and CGI was ahead of its time, and it's one of my favorite fantasy movies."The Sword and the Sorcerer," released in 1982 and directed by Albert Pyun, is another gem. Lee Horsley stars as Talon, a mercenary with an AMAZING three-bladed sword on a mission to rescue a princess and reclaim his kingdom. This film has some action-packed sequences and impressive low-budget practical effects. Lastly, we have "The Dungeonmaster" from 1984. Directed by several directors, including Charles Band and Dave Allen, this anthology-style film follows Paul, a computer programmer who must face various challenges set by the evil Mestema, played by Richard Moll. The film's blend of fantasy and sci-fi elements makes it unique. The image of Saint George astride his horse, sword and spear in hand, slaying a dragon, is one of the most iconic iconographical spectacles of all time. But what was the historical truth of this deeply mythologised figure? The conventional take on his story is well known: once, long ago, there lived a pagan king who refused to honour the one God. As punishment, a terrible dragon was sent to ravage his lands, and his daughter sent to supplicate the beast. Until, the saintly George rode up to save the girl and the king's soul…herein lies an important feature of the historical George: his piety, with the earliest sources casting him as a Christian martyr from Cappadocia, gruesomely tortured and killed in the 3rd century BC. Over time the legend has changed and evolved; from the courts of English monarchs such as Edward I and Henry VIII, who celebrated his chivalry to buttress their regimes, to his many religious and ideological detractors. Throughout it all, though, George stands apart from the ranks of Christian saints. But why?  Join Tom and Dominic as they trace the historical Saint George and his famous slaying of the dragon. From the earliest accounts of him in the Near East, to the cults of the medieval era, the reformation, Tudor pageantry, and the introduction of the St George's flag. Fearsome 17th century dragons, mythical beasts, and miraculous resurrections all feature… EXCLUSIVE NordVPN Deal ➼ https://nordvpn.com/restishistory Try it risk-free now with a 30-day money-back guarantee! *The Rest Is History LIVE in 2024* Tom and Dominic are back onstage this summer, at Hampton Court Palace in London! In the second half of this conversation, Danny Silk shares the seven “dragons,” or fears, that all men must slay. From confronting self-doubt to navigating competition among other men, Danny explores what holds most men back and how you can take immediate action. Plus, you'll discover the importance of community and brotherhood in your journey to becoming a dragon slayer.    Key Takeaways   Every man must confront these seven fears: God, himself, women, men, nature, machine, and provision.  If you don't set your heart to serve your wife, you will set your heart to conquer her and be the winner.  Men bond through doing and adventure and through risk. Your role as a man is to think ahead and bring benefit to everyone you're leading.  Fatherlessness comes from the breakdown of brotherhood.   Danny Silk   Danny Silk is a renowned speaker and prolific author who draws on decades of experience as a counselor, social worker, husband, parent, grandparent, and more. He is the President and Co-Founder of Loving on Purpose, a ministry to families and communities worldwide.    Key Quotes   14:49 - "Quit putting it off because you don't want to feel stupid. You already look stupid. So go do something about it. Be the man. There's that end of it as well. And then there's, in the middle of it, which is get out there and take some risks. Get out there and learn some new skills, find some guys that love to work on that stuff and learn from them." 18:14 - "You really are looking down the road and you're leading, so people are following that. And in that is your responsibility to bring benefit to everybody on the journey with you. That's your role as a man, is to think ahead and to build benefit for for your family, for your legacy. I'm thinking generationally, I'm not just thinking momentarily. I'm not living paycheck to paycheck. I'm living generation to generation. So, then as a provider, you had better open up your clarity of where you're headed and who's going to be benefiting for you ever being on this planet."   Links from Today's Conversation   Apply to join the Summer 2024 DadAwesome Accelerator Cohort: Email awesome@dadawesome.org to learn more   The Way of the Dragon Slayer by Danny Silk  Dragon Slayers Podcast   Connect with dadAWESOME   Make a Donation to dadAWESOME Join the dadAWESOME Prayer Team Receive weekly encouragement by texting "dad" to 651-370-8618
