In this episode, I'm talking with Thien  Ho, who successfully prosecuted serial killer and rapist, Joseph DeAngelo, known as The Golden State Killer/East Side Rapist. DeAngelo had escaped justice for 30 years leaving in his wake, dead, murdered, and raped girls, women, children, and men. He is now running for top DA, Sacramento, California. Find out how the victims of The Golden State Killer/Eastside Rapists got justice! And how others, didn't get justice because of the running of the statute of limitations. Thien had a long path to justice. At just 4 years old he and his family escaped the Communists in Vietnam, on a rickety fishing boat, risking death, torture, and capture finally landing in a refugee camp with nothing but the clothes on their back. As a lead prosecutor for Sacramento County, Mr. Ho successfully prosecuted the East Area Rapist/Golden State Killer and secured a sentence of 12 life terms that ensure the disgraced former police officer will die inside a California prison.,  DeAngelo is one of the nation's most prolific and notorious serial killers who committed 13 murders and over 50 sexual assaults in 11 different jurisdictions throughout California.  This case has been the focus of HBO's docuseries, I'll be Gone in the Dark The case has also been featured on CNN, 20/20, and countless news outlets across the world.Additionally, Thien Ho has supervised the Gangs and Hate Crime Unit and was a panelist for an Asian hate crime discussion sponsored by the National Asian Pacific American Bar Association (NAPABA).  As a member of the Legislative Committee for the California District Attorneys Association, Mr. Ho has analyzed pending bills and advocated on legislative matters for California. He has drafted legislation to prosecute and get justice for victims of Sexually Violent Predators and has testified before the California Assembly regarding pending bills. Now, the 47-year-old Democrat and lifelong prosecutor has announced he is running to succeed Sacramento District Attorney Anne Marie Schubert, who is a candidate for State Attorney General (filling Kamala Harris' seat before Harris ran for the US Senate in California). Thien Ho is all about truth, and justice. One of his main platforms as a candidate for Sacramento District Attorney is justice for victims of child sexual abuse, rape, and sexual assault.                                                                                       ### Listeners, Please Note:  Shari Karney, the host of Roar with Shari. . . E95 - After a little quarantine talk, we do some happiness exercises and get right into some fun filmmaking memories. Julianne worked on "The Muppet Movie" and recalls a day shooting with Chris Cooper, stunt explosions and injuries, and what Brian Henson had to say about his dad Jim Henson. Another sweet man we discuss is Chris Martin from Coldplay. Is Joelle horny or just nostalgic for live music and happier times? We'll go with the latter as we segue into nostalgia talk about 924 Gilman St., the co-op music club from our Bay Area youth. Julianne reconnected with friends from these days, and we both watched the documentary "Turn It Around: The Story of East Bay Punk" to see her friend Sean's role. She talks about his connection to Green Day, and adds a hilarious story about Lint (aka Tim Armstrong) and Lars, the guys from Operation Ivy and Rancid. Why was Julianne fascinated by these types of people? She connected with guys who were interesting and wild, a lot like her friend Puck from "The Real World San Francisco". We hear a funny story about him and our dad in the San Ramon Christmas tree farm, and then remember a story about the East Area Rapist (Golden State Killer) in that same farm, and a Richard Ramirez (Night Stalker) serial killer rental-house connection. We get back into talking about the psychology and angst behind punk music, and the judgements that go along with the music, the hair, and even the tattoos. It quickly turns into a parenting discussion about tattooing, morals, and shame. We battle out who was the worst teen and when a parent needs to draw the line vs when to compromise with your kids when they go down this path. The East Area Rapist/Golden State Killer has been terrorizing the citizens of Sacramento county. We talk about additional attacks to start this episode. There were a number of sightings of strange people in different neighborhoods, some posing as meter readers, some posing as census takers. Neighbors and victims continue to receive haunting phone calls. We talk to a man who, in 1977, saw the East Area Rapist in his yard and actually came close to catching him. He takes us back to those events that occurred 40+ years ago. And then we finish talking about the Visalia Ransacker. This criminal, who operated in the mid-1970s, terrorized the town of Visalia. And then all of a sudden he vanished. Or, as some have theorized, did he move 200 miles to Sacramento County and begin operating there as EAR?  If you want to help support the show you can do so at patreon.com/criminology  An Emash Digital Production Learn more about your ad choices.
