Between 1973 and 1986, entire neighbourhoods in California often went to bed thinking about one man. His crimes earned him many names: the Cordova Cat Burglar, the East Area Rapist and of course, the Golden State Killer. For years, he broke into hundreds of homes, sexually assaulting more than 45 women and murdering 13 people, before disappearing into the night. This week on Crime Story, Pulitzer Prize-winning reporter Paige St. John reveals why it took more than 40 years for victims of the Golden State Killer to learn his true identity.Note: This episode contains details of sexual violence. For ad-free listening to Crime Story and early access to episodes, subscribe to CBC's True Crime channel on Apple Podcasts.Feedback for us? Seriemördarens tillvägagångssätt påminner om the East Area Rapist. The Visalia Ransacker. The East Area Rapist. The Original Night Stalker. Before learning it was the same person, the Golden State Killer had a lot of names. But it would take over 30 years from the time of his last kill to learn his real name: Joseph James DeAngelo.Part 1 of this story guides us through the crimes of the Golden State Killer and leads all the way up to the moment that changed everything in this investigation: the involvement of a heroic author that shined a light so bright on this case that DeAngelo could no longer hide.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/true-crimecast--4106013/support.
A ransacker stalked a small city in California, breaking into 120 homes in 20 months. Two hundred and twenty miles away, three years later, a man committed 50 home-invasion rapes. Three years after that and 300 miles to the south, a series of at least 11 murders occurred. Former FBI Profiler Julia Cowley, the host of The Consult podcast and lead profiler on the case, joins us to discuss the man who would be linked to the seemingly dissimilar crimes, Joe DeAngelo, who turned out to be the Visalia Ransacker, the East Area Rapist, the Original Nightstalker and a one-man machine of terror now known as the Gold State Killer. Julie talks about how law enforcement was able to connect each of those sets of crimes and identify the former mechanic and police officer, DeAngelo, who is now serving 12 life sentences.Join our community on Facebook, The Silver Linings Fireside Chat:https://www.facebook.com/groups/1361159947820623/To support the podcast and get early and ad-free episodes and exclusive content, join our Patreon:https://www.patreon.com/TheSilverLiningsHandbookTo check out The Consult podcast on Patreon:https://patreon.com/theconsultpodTo check out The Consult podcast episodes on Joe DeAngelo:Profiling Joe DeAngelo, Part 1:https://www.truecrimeconsult.com/profiling-joe-deangelo-part-1/Profiling Joe DeAngelo, Part 2:https://www.truecrimeconsult.com/profiling-joe-deangelo-part-2/Profiling Joe DeAngelo, Part 3:https://www.truecrimeconsult.com/profiling-joe-deangelo-part-3/

While the moniker for the GSK was the East Area Rapist in Sacramento, he was given a variety of names during the murders in Southern California. The Original Night Stalker was the most commonly used of those names, and seven attacks in Southern California are attributed to him.SOURCESCited in previous episodeBecome a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/autumn-s-oddities--5307439/support.

This week G-Baby and the Usual Suspect Steve take it regional and turn their sights on a series of brutal killings perpetrated close to our hometown focusing on the greater Sacramento area circa the late 1970's to revisit Richard Chase, otherwise known as the 'Vampire of Sacramento' so named due to his predilection for and disturbing obsession with blood. Join us as we discuss Chase's background and relative lack of name recognition comparative to more well known and notorious serial killers, the geographical connection between Chase and the Golden State Killer aka the East Area Rapist and Original Night Stalker, explore the age old nature/nurture debate and lastly speculate on the potential prosecution tactics we're actually seeing now relating to lack of parental intervention and the interpretations relating to the criminal liability of parents as we move into the future. The porpoises, midnight companions and keen observers, steel ourselves once more to examine one of the most depraved figures in California history and hold on to the hope for some kind of retribution in the next life. “Do what I say or I'll kill you and be gone in the dark” It's just before 6:30 AM on October 5th, 1976 when young mother Jane Carson is blindfolded and attacked with her 3YO son in the house. She is victim #5. 2 months later, 15 YO Kris Pedretti stops playing piano, thinking she heard something in the other room, despite being alone in her house. She is victim #10. Genetic genealogy has the potential to solve up to 90% of crimes including cold cases that have gone unsolved for decades. We first witnessed the power of this technology in the case of the Golden State Killer (GSK) in 2020. But it's more than just a tool for identifying perpetrators: genetic genealogy transforms how - and how quickly - crimes can be solved, and it accelerates both justice and potential healing for survivors of those crimes. In this episode we explore the impact of genetic genealogy with survivors of GSK Gay Hardwick and Kris Pedretti, as well as retired Sacramento County D.A. Anne Marie Schubert who led the investigation of the GSK case, to understand how solving this cold case after more than 40 years of silence has transformed their lives and how it will potentially change the future for all. This episode includes a discussion about sexual violence and homicide.Gay Hardwick Advocate, Sexual Assault Survivor Gay Hardwick is a former Marketing Director for a Real Estate Development firm, a retired California Elementary School Teacher, and a survivor of the Golden State Killer. Ms. Hardwick has been an outspoken supporter of sexual assault survivors, both on social media, in televised interviews, and in the HBO documentary, I'll be Gone in the Dark. She has participated in the Sacramento Victims' Rights Coalition, and police department training in Elk Grove, California. Ms. Hardwick's goals are to alleviate the silence and shame that victims of sexual assault take on as they move through the legal system or suffer in isolation as their cases remain unresolved. In conjunction with Kris Pedretti, her fellow survivor, Ms. Hardwick helps moderate the Facebook site, Sexual Assault Survivors, It's Time to Tell Your Story. Kris Pedretti Survivor Advocate & Educator , Sexual Assault Survivors Kris Pedretti was 15 years old on December 18, 1976, when she became Victim #10 and was raped multiple times by the Golden State Killer. After refusing several requests to discuss her attack publicly, and undergoing much therapy, Ms. Pedretti found her voice with the positive support from friends and the community. She participated in television interviews and documentaries on the GSK stating that it was freeing for her to say out loud, “This happened to me.” Today, Ms. Pedretti has started a support group for sexual assault survivors, a private Facebook group titled “Sexual Assault Survivors: It is Time to Tell Your Story.” She also began hosting monthly gatherings for sexual assault survivors. Ms. Pedretti also speaks with groups and individuals to take away the stigma of sexual assault on victims. She believes deeply if we stand together, we can take back the control of our bodies and our lives. Anne Marie Schubert Strategic Advisor, Government Affairs, Verogen Anne Marie Schubert has over 32 years of law enforcement experience and is a nationally recognized expert in forensic DNA. She was elected District Attorney for Sacramento County, California in 2014 and served in this capacity until December 2022. In the 1970's one man committed hundreds of crimes in several different communities in California. He would go on to be called the Visalia Ransacker, the East Area Rapist, and the Original Night Stalker but his final moniker, The Golden State Killer would be the most accurate. Before he was known as the Golden State Killer, Joseph DeAngelo was known as the "East Area Rapist" by law enforcement. From 1976-1979, the Sacramento Sheriff's Department received various reports of home invasions and sexual assaults conducted by an unknown man. As a result of the serial attacks, a task force was soon formed in order to identify the attacker and bring an end to his horrific crimes. As the sole female investigator on the case, retired Undersheriff in the Sacramento County Sheriff's Office, Carol Daly understood the importance of bringing empathy to those who suffered from the traumatic attacks. She discusses her role in the investigation of the "East Area Rapist," her close relationship with the victims, and her reaction to Joseph DeAngelo's arrest all these years later. This week on Hashtag History, we will be discussing Joseph James DeAngelo, also known as the Golden State Killer. DeAngelo tormented the State of California - particularly here in the Sacramento area (very, very close to where we live) - for more than ten years committing burglaries, rapes, and murders. Due to his widespread crimes, it took investigators more than four decades to piece together the fact that the man that had become known as the Visalia Ransacker, the East Area Rapist, and the Original Night Stalker were all the same person. In 2018, DeAngelo was finally caught after a family member of his had uploaded their DNA to a genetic genealogy site. He was charged and sentenced to life imprisonment in 2020. For Tony Reid, this case began as a claim of innocence in the murder of Donna Jo Richmond in 1975. While the errors in the original investigation and a flawed trial resulted in a guilty verdict, the reassessment confirmed that the defendant was framed but the question became: by whom? Working with a new team of investigators, which included two of the original detectives, the probe uncovered a startling new possibility: Was the real culprit a serial offender?Turning to the public for information, Mr. Reid created the 12/26/75 podcast. Based on primary evidence and new interviews surrounding the murder of Donna Jo on that date in Exeter, California, the team re-examined every possibility. The investigators soon found something more than a terribly failed verdict. They discovered connections to the unsolved murders of Jennifer Armour and Claude Snelling—and links to The East Area Rapist. They uncovered shocking corruption by the original lead investigator who illegally destroyed trial evidence and looked into the unexplained death of the original defense attorney. This pursuit led them right back to Exeter, where a new suspect in these murders emerged: Joseph DeAngelo, who was then a full-time sergeant with the local police department, the officer in charge of violent crimes and burglary investigations. This book is more than an adaptation of the 12/26/75 podcast. It shares new insight formed during the investigation and provides a first-hand look at the Tulare crimes, as well as exposing the faulty evidence used to obtain and maintain the false conviction. More than anything else, 12/26/75 demonstrates the enormous consequences of letting a serial killer go free, made worse when combined with the painful mistakes, in-fighting, and finger-pointing by certain jurisdictions. The catastrophic results are undeniable. Now that the mystery of how it all unfolded is revealed, we can also begin to examine the reforms necessary to prevent this tragedy from happening again.Support this show http://supporter.acast.com/houseofmysteryradio. CW: this episode contains descriptions of cannibalism, abuse of a corpse, the murder of children, and animal cruelty; please take care when listening. The 1970s were a really rough time for Sacramento, CA - not only was the East Area Rapist (later coined the Golden State Killer) terrorizing the community, but a blitz of killings were committed from December 1977 to January 1978 that haunt the community to this day. A killer who only entered homes with unlocked doors because he felt that meant he was "welcome." A killer who literally drank his victims' blood - the Vampire of Sacramento. Note from Caro: we had a little audio issue at the end of the episode so we had to do some splicing, please forgive us! Seriemördarens tillvägagångssätt påminner om the East Area Rapist. Cold case investigator Paul Holes played a major role in ending a decades-long reign of terror by The Golden State Killer. First known as The East Area Rapist, a masked psychological sadist assaulted 50 women in Northern California between 1976 and 1979. He progressed from burglaries to vicious sexual assaults in the middle of the night to bludgeoning his victims to death. Along the way, he called 911 to taunt the police. Suddenly it seemed he had disappeared. But he had moved to a new hunting ground in Southern California, where he murdered 13 people and became known as the Original Night Stalker. And then in 1986, it stopped. In 2011, DNA testing revealed that the East Area Rapist and the Original Night Stalker were one in the same man. True crime writer Michelle McNamara gave the elusive criminal the “Golden State Killer.” McNamara, the wife of comedian/actor Patton Oswalt, became obsessed with the long-abandoned cold case for six years, focusing attention on it until her untimely death. Enter investigator Paul Holes. Holes talked with Robert about his newly released book, Unmasked: My Life Solving America's Cold Cases.
