In this episode of Big Blend Radio, we welcome back Bay Area singer-songwriter, educator, and activist Anna Karney for a heartfelt conversation about music as a force for connection, healing, and social change. Anna discusses her latest album "One True Song," a powerful collection of soulful folk rock and alternative singer-songwriter music rooted in themes of justice, hope, and collective action. Co-produced by Michael Rosen (Rancid), the album features an impressive lineup of Bay Area musicians including James DePrato (Chuck Prophet Band), Phillip Bennett (Jefferson Starship), Uriah Duffy (Fantastic Negrito, Whitesnake), and more. From the gentle “Suspended” to the driving “Out of Body” and the socially charged “Freedom Summer,” the album blends raw acoustic songwriting with the full energy of a rock band. The conversation also explores Anna's work as a choir and guitar teacher in San Francisco, the healing power of music, the importance of community, and how art bridges culture, history, and human connection. We also highlight her new holiday single, “Ring In the Holidays,” a joyful celebration of togetherness through music. On todays podcast, I speak with Australian Royal Navy Veteran Karney Armstrong. With over 11 years of service as a medic, Karney's journey is one of resilience, courage, and transformation. During her career, she faced extraordinary challenges—including a life-saving rescue when she treated a civilian attacked by a shark off Garden Island, WA, just shy of completing her Advanced Medics Assistant Course. Her dedication and quick thinking in that moment exemplify her bravery. Despite her service, Karney faced personal battles, including PTSD, OCD and anorexia, all while managing young motherhood and deployments. Drawn to healing, she turned to yoga to reconnect with her body and calm her nervous system. After years of training, she achieved a historic milestone as the first female from Australia to medal at the Invictus Games in 2023 in Germany—winning gold in a race chair and silver in seated shot put. With her loyal service dog Ivy by her side, Karney now dedicates her life to helping other Veterans and First Responders. She is an upcoming author, trauma-sensitive yoga instructor, and is often seen on both the News and state newspapers advocating for Veterans and First Responders, proving that healing is possible—that true strength lies in community and service. Join us as we explore her inspiring story of resilience, recovery, and purpose—because Veterans helping Veterans is where the magic is! PFAS, or forever chemicals, have been used in consumer products, like firefighting foam and nonstick cookware, since the 1950s. Now these chemicals are showing up in water and soil. The National Association of State Departments of Agriculture represents the ag departments in all 50 states and four U.S. territories. RJ Karney is the senior director of public policy for NASDA. He says the association is working to address the human and environmental health impacts of PFAS. Karney gives us an update on NASDA’s role in eliminating these forever chemicals while protecting farmers. This Washington Watch news update is brought to you by the Wisconsin Soybean Association, dedicated to ensuring policies are in place for the future of soybean farmers.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
Spektre's record label Respekt presents a fiery techno single from Karney aka Bryan Kearney. Karney is the techno alias of Irish trance icon, Bryan Kearney, and this release combines pounding percussion, in-your-face vocals, and menacing melody stabs. This is the first time that Bryan Kearney has featured on Respekt, and it comes after he collaborated with Spektre to produce a track called "Remember the Future," which was released on A State of Trance. "Delante" is the solo track on the release, and it opens with a pulsating acid bassline and hammering kick drum to form a foundation for thrashing hi-hats and punishing claps. The track is defined by the aggressive tones of a chanting vocal, which adds to the fist-pumping groove of this high-octane slice of peak time techno. Release date - 31/01/25 https://ffm.to/rspkt230

Our guest today is Yvonne Karney, MD. She is the founder and Chief Executive Officer of The Global Institute for Vitality Renewal, an organization dedicated to making the world a better place–one vibrant, healthy person at a time. In this episode of C60 Health Connections, hosted by Jessica MacNaughton (CEO at shopc60.com and C60 Purple Power), we learn that toxins damage the fats in our mitochondria as well as cell membranes, just like a flame-thrower melting plastic! This affects our ability to make energy and it also messes up the way our hormones work, because hormones only work when they attach to the receptors, which sit on our cell membranes--if the cell membranes are damaged then so are the hormone receptors and our hormones don't work. Yvonne shares with us her favorite “fire extinguisher” to address this common health issue!

Hillel, on campuses across the United States and internationally, takes their place with other religious centers on college campuses, to enrich the lives of young people during their academic experience. In particular, the purpose of Hillel is to serve Jewish students at a pivotal time in their lives to foster learning about Jewish values and to promote their commitment to social justice as a lifelong cause. At the University of California at Los Angeles (UCLA) what is unique is the presence of a significant art center initially endowed by the late David Dortort, a renown television producer, inspired by the former UCLA Hillel Director, Rabbi Chaim Zeidler-Feller, and continued with the support of the current Director, Rabbi Aaron Lerner. It is called the Dortort Center for Creativity and the Arts at UCLA Hillel. And it is one of a kind, with 550 Hillels around the world, it is the only campus organization with a significant commitment to the arts for inspiration and for deepening learning experiences. Perla Karney, the Artistic Director of the Center for the last 18 years, has provided the kind of leadership and dedication that has demonstrated how a Hillel and other campus organizations can use the power of the arts in all its variety to expand the education of college students and engage the greater community as well. With her direction, painters, writers, photographers, actors as well as academic experts can bring people together in the common quest to make a better world. In the breadth of her programming for the UCLA Center both on campus and internationally, she has become a beacon of artistry as an arts administrator. For more information, or to propose an arts project, email: Perla@UCLAhillel.org
