In the conclusion of this two-part case, Paul Holes turns to DNA evidence in the search for Carla Walker's real killer. But decades-old lab errors and missing samples threaten to derail the investigation. Despite the obstacles, the case finally reaches a definitive conclusion—answering the question once and for all: Who killed Carla Walker? Paul Holes is a bestselling author, podcaster, television host and retired cold-case investigator with the sheriff's and district attorney's offices in California's Contra Costa County. During his 27 years as an investigator, Holes used his behavioral and forensic expertise in such notable cases as the Zodiac murders, Golden State Killer, and Jaycee Dugard kidnapping. In May 2022, Holes published Unmasked: My Life Solving America's Cold Cases – which became an instant New York Times bestseller. Paul teamed with the FBI and Sacramento DA to help identify Joseph DeAngelo as the Golden State Killer, the most prolific serial predator in U.S. history. In 2019, he teamed up with Oxygen to host ”The DNA of Murder with Paul Holes” and in November he's launching a new original series with HLN called, ”Real Life Nightmare with Paul Holes.” For bonus episodes, behind-the-scenes shenanigans, join the SuperFam community at smalltowndicks.com/superfam

The 1980s was truly the golden age of the serial killer. With no DNA evidence, interconnected police databases, or multitudes of cameras everywhere, deranged psychopaths like Joseph DeAngelo, Dennis Rader, and Jeffrey Dahmer were free to roam about the country, committing their heinous crimes while the rest of us worried about the Russians (see our recent episode about the Cold War). Join Aaron and Dr. Amy this week as they put on their true crime hats (for one more episode only, we promise!) and take a look at this most terrible of 1980s trends.

Genetic genealogy has the potential to solve up to 90% of crimes including cold cases that have gone unsolved for decades. We first witnessed the power of this technology in the case of the Golden State Killer (GSK) in 2020. But it's more than just a tool for identifying perpetrators: genetic genealogy transforms how - and how quickly - crimes can be solved, and it accelerates both justice and potential healing for survivors of those crimes. In this episode we explore the impact of genetic genealogy with survivors of GSK Gay Hardwick and Kris Pedretti, as well as retired Sacramento County D.A. Anne Marie Schubert who led the investigation of the GSK case, to understand how solving this cold case after more than 40 years of silence has transformed their lives and how it will potentially change the future for all. This episode includes a discussion about sexual violence and homicide.Gay Hardwick Advocate, Sexual Assault Survivor Gay Hardwick is a former Marketing Director for a Real Estate Development firm, a retired California Elementary School Teacher, and a survivor of the Golden State Killer. Ms. Hardwick has been an outspoken supporter of sexual assault survivors, both on social media, in televised interviews, and in the HBO documentary, I'll be Gone in the Dark. She has participated in the Sacramento Victims' Rights Coalition, and police department training in Elk Grove, California. Ms. Hardwick's goals are to alleviate the silence and shame that victims of sexual assault take on as they move through the legal system or suffer in isolation as their cases remain unresolved. In conjunction with Kris Pedretti, her fellow survivor, Ms. Hardwick helps moderate the Facebook site, Sexual Assault Survivors, It's Time to Tell Your Story. Kris Pedretti Survivor Advocate & Educator , Sexual Assault Survivors Kris Pedretti was 15 years old on December 18, 1976, when she became Victim #10 and was raped multiple times by the Golden State Killer. After refusing several requests to discuss her attack publicly, and undergoing much therapy, Ms. Pedretti found her voice with the positive support from friends and the community. She participated in television interviews and documentaries on the GSK stating that it was freeing for her to say out loud, “This happened to me.” Today, Ms. Pedretti has started a support group for sexual assault survivors, a private Facebook group titled “Sexual Assault Survivors: It is Time to Tell Your Story.” She also began hosting monthly gatherings for sexual assault survivors. Ms. Pedretti also speaks with groups and individuals to take away the stigma of sexual assault on victims. She believes deeply if we stand together, we can take back the control of our bodies and our lives. Anne Marie Schubert Strategic Advisor, Government Affairs, Verogen Anne Marie Schubert has over 32 years of law enforcement experience and is a nationally recognized expert in forensic DNA. She was elected District Attorney for Sacramento County, California in 2014 and served in this capacity until December 2022. Notably, in 2018, her office led the investigation and prosecution of Joseph DeAngelo, the “Golden State Killer using Forensic Investigative Genetic Genealogy (FIGG). Since the arrest of DeAngelo, her team has used FIGG to identify the NorCal Rapist, unidentified human remains and partnered with the California Innocence Project to exonerate Ricky Davis after 15 years of wrongful conviction. Today, she is nationally recognized in her knowledge of forensic DNA and has trained law enforcement across the world on the use of Forensic investigative Genetic Genealogy (FiGG) to solve violent crime, exonerate the innocent and identify human remains.

From 1976-1979, the Sacramento Sheriff's Department received various reports of home invasions and sexual assaults conducted by an unknown man. As a result of the serial attacks, a task force was soon formed in order to identify the attacker and bring an end to his horrific crimes.   As the sole female investigator on the case, retired Undersheriff in the Sacramento County Sheriff's Office, Carol Daly understood the importance of bringing empathy to those who suffered from the traumatic attacks. For Tony Reid, this case began as a claim of innocence in the murder of Donna Jo Richmond in 1975. While the errors in the original investigation and a flawed trial resulted in a guilty verdict, the reassessment confirmed that the defendant was framed but the question became: by whom? Working with a new team of investigators, which included two of the original detectives, the probe uncovered a startling new possibility: Was the real culprit a serial offender?Turning to the public for information, Mr. Reid created the 12/26/75 podcast. Based on primary evidence and new interviews surrounding the murder of Donna Jo on that date in Exeter, California, the team re-examined every possibility. The investigators soon found something more than a terribly failed verdict. They discovered connections to the unsolved murders of Jennifer Armour and Claude Snelling—and links to The East Area Rapist. They uncovered shocking corruption by the original lead investigator who illegally destroyed trial evidence and looked into the unexplained death of the original defense attorney. This pursuit led them right back to Exeter, where a new suspect in these murders emerged: Joseph DeAngelo, who was then a full-time sergeant with the local police department, the officer in charge of violent crimes and burglary investigations. This book is more than an adaptation of the 12/26/75 podcast. It shares new insight formed during the investigation and provides a first-hand look at the Tulare crimes, as well as exposing the faulty evidence used to obtain and maintain the false conviction. More than anything else, 12/26/75 demonstrates the enormous consequences of letting a serial killer go free, made worse when combined with the painful mistakes, in-fighting, and finger-pointing by certain jurisdictions. The catastrophic results are undeniable. Now that the mystery of how it all unfolded is revealed, we can also begin to examine the reforms necessary to prevent this tragedy from happening again.Support this show http://supporter.acast.com/houseofmysteryradio. Today we talk about Genealogical DNA Testing and how it may be used in this case. For decades, law enforcement was unsuccessful in their search for the "Golden State Killer," who was responsible for at least 13 murders and 45 rapes across the state of California during the 1970s and 1980s. In spite of this, detectives made an attempt to revive the case in 2017. They obtained the suspect's DNA profile from a rape kit and uploaded it to GEDmatch, which is a database that compiles the findings of numerous genealogy DNA tests. Investigators were able to identify potential relatives of the suspect based on DNA matches to the kit. They constructed a family tree through genealogical research and then sought for potential suspects who matched the DNA profile on the tree. Two months later, they compiled a list of potential candidates for the position. And in April of 2018, law enforcement officials made an arrest of Joseph DeAngelo, who later confessed to many charges of rape and murder and was ultimately sentenced to life in prison for his crimes. DNA analysis was able to solve mysteries that had baffled law enforcement for nearly half a century in a matter of weeks or months.  The effective approach that was taken in the investigation of the Golden State Killer has given rise to a new discipline: investigative genetic genealogy (IGG). According to the FBI, there have been over 250,000 unsolved killings since the 1960s, and this number continues to grow by 6,000 cases annually. Through the integration of genetic analysis and genealogical investigation, IGG is contributing to the resolution of this problem. So how does investigative genetic genealogy work, including how it operates, what prominent companies are doing in response, and why it is causing some controversy in the community of genealogists. 4 Killed For What is a production of True Crime Today; listen & sub to True Crime Today Here: https://availableon.com/truecrimetodayatruecrimepodcast Join Tony Brueski @tonybpod on twitter and our Facebook Discussion Group: https://www.facebook.com/groups/834636321133023 If you have information about the Moscow, Idaho murders: Tip Line: 208-883-7180 Email: tipline@ci.moscow.id.us Digital Media: http://fbi.gov/moscowidaho

Now that the mystery of how it all unfolded is revealed, we can also begin to examine the reforms necessary to prevent this tragedy from happening again. 12/26/75-Tony Reid

Before he was known as the "Golden State Killer", Joseph DeAngelo terrorized people all over the state of California. It was in Orange County that he was known as the Night Stalker. But while Joseph DeAngelo's reign of terror was winding down in the mid-1980's, another killer in the Los Angeles area was just getting started. He too would be given the name ‘The Night Stalker.' Join Mike and Morf as they discuss the frightening and bizarre crimes of serial killer Richard Ramirez. The details of the crimes committed by Ramirez are brutal. Descriptions provided by survivors were eery right down to their description of his rotting teeth and horrible breath. It took some incredible police work to identify Ramirez and an angry mob to bring him down. Once images hit the newspapers and television, it was evident that Ramirez looked the part of a serial killer and he made sure to play that image to the hilt. But what drove Ramirez to kill? Events that unfolded during his younger years may have played a pivotal role in his murderous desires.
