In The People vs. the Golden State Killer, Thien Ho, the current District Attorney of Sacramento, recounts his harrowing and exhilarating experience as the lead prosecutor responsible for capturing and prosecuting Joseph DeAngelo. Referred to at various times by law enforcement and the media as the Visalia Ransacker, the East Bay Rapist, the Original Nightstalker, and finally the Golden State Killer, DeAngelo, a former policeman, is widely considered “one of the most notorious serial predators in American history.”Ho's book is the first official account of how the Golden State Killer was apprehended and put behind bars for life. Ho led an elite team of law enforcement from six California prosecutor's offices, using a newly developed tool known as “investigative genetic genealogy” to connect DeAngelo to multiple cold cases stretching back nearly a half century. Many previous narratives about DeAngelo, including two bestselling books and multiple documentaries, focused largely on the killer and his heinous crimes. This book not only provides hundreds of facts and details never revealed to the public about the Golden State Killer's crimes, it also presents the real-life story of the people who worked tirelessly to bring DeAngelo to justice. It also offers the unprecedented authorized perspective of three survivors of DeAngelo's crimes who courageously turned their pain into empowerment and activism. A portion of the book's proceeds will be donated both by the author and Third State Books to Phyllis's Garden, a nonprofit advocating for victims' rights begun in honor of a GSK survivor. The People vs. the Golden State Killer also recounts Ho's fascinating personal journey, from escaping communist Vietnam with his family as a child to working his way up from an internship to an elite homicide division and eventually becoming one of only ten Asian American district attorneys out of 2,400 nationwide.Support this show http://supporter.acast.com/houseofmysteryradio. For more than 40 years, the man now known as the Golden State Killer stalked California — breaking into homes, raping, murdering, and then vanishing into the night. He was a ghost who terrorized families from Sacramento to Santa Barbara — until one relentless prosecutor finally helped end his reign of fear. In this episode, Tony Brueski sits down with Sacramento County District Attorney Thien Ho, the man who personally led the prosecution that put Joseph James DeAngelo behind bars for life. Ho's new book, The People vs. The Golden State Killer, pulls back the curtain on the real investigation — from the DNA breakthrough that cracked the case wide open to the survivors who refused to stay silent. This isn't a retelling of old headlines. It's the first inside account of what really happened in the courtroom, the strategies behind the scenes, and the human cost of justice decades in the making. You'll hear how DeAngelo faked insanity to manipulate investigators, the haunting promise Ho made to a survivor, and the moment victims stood up in court and told their attacker they weren't afraid anymore. This is the story of justice, perseverance, and the team that never stopped hunting a monster hiding in plain sight. #HiddenKillers #GoldenStateKiller #JosephDeAngelo #ThienHo #TrueCrimeToday #ColdCase #DNAJustice #EastAreaRapist #OriginalNightstalker #JusticeServed Want to comment and watch this podcast as a video? When Joseph DeAngelo — the Golden State Killer — was finally unmasked in 2018, the world saw an old man slumped in a wheelchair. But according to Sacramento DA Thien Ho, it was all an act. In this exclusive conversation, Tony Brueski goes behind the headlines with Ho, the man who stood across the courtroom from one of America's most elusive serial predators. From the whispered “crazy act” DeAngelo tried to pull in the interrogation room to the frail performance he staged in court, Ho explains how the prosecution saw through every layer of manipulation. But this story isn't about glorifying a killer — it's about the survivors. Ho shares how he centered their voices, the emotional weight of their impact statements, and the unforgettable moment one woman told DeAngelo, “I'm not afraid of you anymore.” The People vs. The Golden State Killer gives us the first insider look at the battle between truth and illusion — and how one prosecutor helped make history by exposing the evil hiding behind a mask of normalcy. #GoldenStateKiller #ThienHo #JosephDeAngelo #HiddenKillers #TrueCrimePodcast #Justice #Prosecution #DNAEvidence #EastAreaRapist #CrimeStories Want to comment and watch this podcast as a video? Welcome to Season 5, Episode 44! Our guest today is Thien Ho, the Sacramento District attorney and long time prosecutor. He's also the author of the upcoming book, The People vs. The Golden State Killer which will be published by Third State Books and releases on November 11th. This true crime memoir follows Thien's experience as the lead prosecutor on the case against Joseph DeAngelo, one of the most notorious serial killers of the 20th century. It covers never-before published details about the investigation, capture, and trial that put DeAngelo behind bars. At the same time, the book is a memoir that follows Thien's personal story escaping war-torn Vietnam as a young boy and working his way up the law enforcement system to becoming the lead prosecutor in the case. Ho has gone on to become the Sacramento District Attorney, one of only 10 API District Attorneys in the country (there are 2400 total DAs).  We loved how the book also highlights the experiences of three key survivors of DeAngelo's crimes, something that other books on the Golden State Killer haven't done to any significant extent… and this gives power to the survivors. In fact, a portion of the book's proceeds will be donated both by the author and Third State Books to Phyllis's Garden, a nonprofit advocating for victims' rights begun in honor of a GSK survivor.  To get a copy of the book, we encourage you to purchase through the links on thienho.org because you'll be supporting small businesses.  If you like what we do, please share, follow, and like us in your podcast directory of choice or on Instagram @AAHistory101. The 1980s was truly the golden age of the serial killer. With no DNA evidence, interconnected police databases, or multitudes of cameras everywhere, deranged psychopaths like Joseph DeAngelo, Dennis Rader, and Jeffrey Dahmer were free to roam about the country, committing their heinous crimes while the rest of us worried about the Russians (see our recent episode about the Cold War). Join Aaron and Dr. Amy this week as they put on their true crime hats (for one more episode only, we promise!) and take a look at this most terrible of 1980s trends.

Genetic genealogy has the potential to solve up to 90% of crimes including cold cases that have gone unsolved for decades. We first witnessed the power of this technology in the case of the Golden State Killer (GSK) in 2020. But it's more than just a tool for identifying perpetrators: genetic genealogy transforms how - and how quickly - crimes can be solved, and it accelerates both justice and potential healing for survivors of those crimes. In this episode we explore the impact of genetic genealogy with survivors of GSK Gay Hardwick and Kris Pedretti, as well as retired Sacramento County D.A. Before he was known as the Golden State Killer, Joseph DeAngelo was known as the "East Area Rapist" by law enforcement. From 1976-1979, the Sacramento Sheriff's Department received various reports of home invasions and sexual assaults conducted by an unknown man. As a result of the serial attacks, a task force was soon formed in order to identify the attacker and bring an end to his horrific crimes.   As the sole female investigator on the case, retired Undersheriff in the Sacramento County Sheriff's Office, Carol Daly understood the importance of bringing empathy to those who suffered from the traumatic attacks. She discusses her role in the investigation of the "East Area Rapist," her close relationship with the victims, and her reaction to Joseph DeAngelo's arrest all these years later. Today we talk about Genealogical DNA Testing and how it may be used in this case. For decades, law enforcement was unsuccessful in their search for the "Golden State Killer," who was responsible for at least 13 murders and 45 rapes across the state of California during the 1970s and 1980s. In spite of this, detectives made an attempt to revive the case in 2017. They obtained the suspect's DNA profile from a rape kit and uploaded it to GEDmatch, which is a database that compiles the findings of numerous genealogy DNA tests. Investigators were able to identify potential relatives of the suspect based on DNA matches to the kit. They constructed a family tree through genealogical research and then sought for potential suspects who matched the DNA profile on the tree. Two months later, they compiled a list of potential candidates for the position. And in April of 2018, law enforcement officials made an arrest of Joseph DeAngelo, who later confessed to many charges of rape and murder and was ultimately sentenced to life in prison for his crimes. DNA analysis was able to solve mysteries that had baffled law enforcement for nearly half a century in a matter of weeks or months.  The effective approach that was taken in the investigation of the Golden State Killer has given rise to a new discipline: investigative genetic genealogy (IGG). According to the FBI, there have been over 250,000 unsolved killings since the 1960s, and this number continues to grow by 6,000 cases annually. Through the integration of genetic analysis and genealogical investigation, IGG is contributing to the resolution of this problem. So how does investigative genetic genealogy work, including how it operates, what prominent companies are doing in response, and why it is causing some controversy in the community of genealogists. 4 Killed For What is a production of True Crime Today; listen & sub to True Crime Today Here: https://availableon.com/truecrimetodayatruecrimepodcast Join Tony Brueski @tonybpod on twitter and our Facebook Discussion Group: https://www.facebook.com/groups/834636321133023 If you have information about the Moscow, Idaho murders: Tip Line: 208-883-7180 Email: tipline@ci.moscow.id.us Digital Media: http://fbi.gov/moscowidaho

Crime scene investigations are rarely as dramatic - and definitive - as what you see on TV shows like CSI. That does not make them any less crucial to solving the case. Host Paul Holes takes us through a case he worked on in the late 1990s, where a claim of self-defense was ultimately turned on its head after a thorough and objective look at the nearly invisible trace evidence left behind after the body of a gay man was found dumped in a ditch. The detective: Paul Holes is a bestselling author, podcaster, television host and retired cold-case investigator with the sheriff's and district attorney's offices in California's Contra Costa County. True Murder: The Most Shocking Killers

For Tony Reid, this case began as a claim of innocence in the murder of Donna Jo Richmond in 1975. While the errors in the original investigation and a flawed trial resulted in a guilty verdict, the reassessment confirmed that the defendant was framed but the question became: by whom? Working with a new team of investigators, which included two of the original detectives, the probe uncovered a startling new possibility: Was the real culprit a serial offender?Turning to the public for information, Mr. Reid created the 12/26/75 podcast. Based on primary evidence and new interviews surrounding the murder of Donna Jo on that date in Exeter, California, the team re-examined every possibility. The investigators soon found something more than a terribly failed verdict. They discovered connections to the unsolved murders of Jennifer Armour and Claude Snelling—and links to The East Area Rapist. They uncovered shocking corruption by the original lead investigator who illegally destroyed trial evidence and looked into the unexplained death of the original defense attorney. This pursuit led them right back to Exeter, where a new suspect in these murders emerged: Joseph DeAngelo, who was then a full-time sergeant with the local police department, the officer in charge of violent crimes and burglary investigations. This book is more than an adaptation of the 12/26/75 podcast. It shares new insight formed during the investigation and provides a first-hand look at the Tulare crimes, as well as exposing the faulty evidence used to obtain and maintain the false conviction. More than anything else, 12/26/75 demonstrates the enormous consequences of letting a serial killer go free, made worse when combined with the painful mistakes, in-fighting, and finger-pointing by certain jurisdictions. The catastrophic results are undeniable. Now that the mystery of how it all unfolded is revealed, we can also begin to examine the reforms necessary to prevent this tragedy from happening again. 12/26/75-Tony Reid
