Film festival in East London
POPULARITY
In this episode we have the pleasure of speaking to the co- founder of the prestigious London Short Film Festival, Phillip Ilson.Phillip co-founded LSFF with Kate Taylor in 2003 under its original moniker Halloween Short Film Festival, following ten years of running its predecessor The Halloween Society.Phillip is also a vastly experienced short film programmer. He's currently the Short Film Programmer for @BFI London Film Festival and has previously programmed for East End Film Festival, Cork Film Festival, Branchage Festival, Latitude and Curzon Soho.In short (pun intended), there's not much Phillip Ilson doesn't know about short films. We talk about all sorts, including his journey with LSFF, what filmmakers have to gain from submitting to a festival, what makes a short film stand out, how the festival runs its selection process, as well as the process by which they come up with their film strands. This was a fresh perspective for us (we haven't interviewed a festival founder before), and it was fascinating for us to get this insight. We've spoken before on the podcast about how we absolutely love LSFF, and were blown away when we went last January.Links:You can find out more about LSFF here:https://shortfilms.org.uk/about/Some of Phillip's favourite short films:Wasp- dir. In this episode of The Directors' Take podcast, your hosts Oz Arshad and Marcus Anthony Thomas are joined by Philip Ilson, the Co-Founder and Co-Director of the BAFTA and BIFA Qualifying London Short Film Festival. As a director looking to break into the industry, you need to get your film into reputable film festivals to platform your work and gain industry attention. The rejection and lack of feedback associated with this process can be disheartening to many, so we brought Philip on to help break down their decision-making process for you all. This conversation covers: -What are film festivals? -How he created LSFF. -What makes a good short film? -What is the ideal length for a short film? -Is there unconscious bias in the selection process? -Why don't film festivals provide feedback on the shorts submitted? -What does the festival programming process look like? -Do film festivals have an agenda? -What does he think about the film festival pathway? Philip co-founded LSFF with Kate Taylor in 2003 under its original moniker Halloween Short Film Festival, following ten years of running its predecessor The Halloween Society through its various guises as a film and club night. Philip has previously programmed for BFI London Film Festival, East End Film Festival, Cork Film Festival, Branchage Festival, Latitude and Curzon Soho. HORNBEAM was the winner of BEST DIRECTION at the Toronto LGBTQ+ Film Festival. Under cover of darkness, two strangers bond over a shared secret. But how well do they really know each other? Director Biography - Mark Pluck Mark is a London-based writer, director and producer. In 2017 he wrote voyeuristic thriller ‘The Photographer' starring Sophia di Martino (Marvel's Loki) which screened at the East End Film Festival, Danny Boyle's festival ‘Shuffle' and the British Independent Film Festival. In 2019 he produced the comedy-horror short 'Meat is Murder' - in collaboration with London advertising agency VCCP, which was described by the British Comedy Guide as “Really funny, then genuinely unsettling”. In 2020 Mark made his directorial debut with horror short ‘Platform' which received its world premiere at Grimmfest and later screened at Lund Fantastic Festival and the British Horror Film Festival, where Mark was awarded the Rising Star Award. Director Statement: I've always been drawn to stories that explore the lives we live behind closed doors, beyond the carefully curated façade we project out to the world. I'm interested in the lengths we go to in order to conceal these truths and, more importantly, how these actions affect those we care for the most. HORNBEAM is a film that aims to explore some of this rich and rather murky territory through the lens of a tender love story. Set almost entirely within the confines of a van over several nights, it follows two men who are both living a lie and seeking a safe space to come clean. But unfortunately, as is so often the case in life, the truth can be hard to bear. Film playing on the Film Festival Streaming service today. In 2015, Power was commissioned by the East End Film Festival to curate a rescore for Bruno Forzani and Héléne Catet's film. The original score for The Strange Colour of Your Body's Tears wasn't actually original. Instead, as the University of Wisconsin's Mike King wrote in a blog post for UW's Cinematheque, "much of the soundtrack is directly lifted from the 1970s cinema that inspires them."

Life's A Beach is John Baker Jr's debut feature. It's a documentary about Jerry 'Mungo' Francis who set up home on a beach in Folkestone to lead a life free of the rat race. Soon after John started to film him to get his story a dispute over land ownership and rights sprung up that put Mungo at loggerheads with various private and public sector bodies. Tragically he died before anyone had the chance to throw him off the beach. Life's A Beach is an inspiring, and ultimately a sad tale. A true life David vs Goliath.
