Join us for an engaging episode featuring Alpesh Patel, as he shares his unique journey and insights into overcoming societal expectations, cultural challenges, and achieving success on his own terms. Alpesh is a 50-year-old, Indian, gay man who opens up about his upbringing and the lack of role models who looked like him. He was expected to follow a traditional path of marriage and children, but his life has taken a different turn. His blunt nature, while sometimes off-putting to others, is a key trait that has helped him navigate who he is. Growing up, Alpesh faced immense pressure to excel academically. His parents drilled into him the importance of studying hard, which eventually led to his mum kicking him out of the house. Did that help or hinder Alpesh? He, found himself in Brighton, studying in a predominantly white environment. Initially feeling out of place, he quickly embraced the diversity and challenges, finding his stride and loving the experience that gave him so many of the skills and confidence he has today to embrace who he is. Alpesh's career was driven by a relentless pursuit of being the best. Starting as a part-time sales employee while at university, he climbed the ranks to become a top salesperson, manager, and area manage and beyond. His motivation was clear: to be number one and earn as much money to live the life he wanted to. His journey has led him to entrepreneurship, opening a zero-waste shop in Hackney Wick. Throughout his life, Alpesh has learned the importance of empathy and understanding different perspectives. He advises against quick judgments and emphasises listening to others' experiences to create a more inclusive and less polarised world. Tune in to hear Alpesh Patel's candid reflections on his life, career, and the lessons he's learned along the way. His journey is filled with laughter, challenges, and insights into what it means to stay true to yourself and succeed when you go against the grain of expectation and become yourself. Is London tapped out or are there still great development opportunities in the capital? This week Anna Ward is joined by James Barton and Nick Alderman from Knight Frank's development land team. In this episode, they explore where the new residential development opportunities might be, from Battersea to Hackney Wick. They also discuss who will be building these projects, the return of developers to the land market, as well as the withdrawal of housing associations, as well as the latest findings from Knight Frank's poll of 50 volume and SME housebuilders. And the key challenges to building these developments: land scarcity, outdated council registers, and high build and finance costs. Plus, they look at whether there is a need for some flexibility in affordable housing criteria. Don't miss this informative discussion on the opportunities and challenges shaping London's residential development scene. Butoh Dancer | ChoreographerYou can also watch this episode on Youtube where English, Italian and Spanish subtitles are available or visit the Metralla Rosa website for more details.__________In Episode 51 of Metralla Rosa, Carla is in London, talking to Mai Nguyen Tri, a Franco-Vietnmese experimental Butoh dancer. As a self labelled Zen Punk artist, Mai exploits her natural affiliation to water in order to give her gestural expressions a fluidity of movement that flow directly from her unconscious mind – a source deep enough to have provided her with twenty years worth of inspiration for her improvised performances. Butoh originated from 1950s post-war Japanese culture and, although Mai draws on the anti-stylised fluidity and slow, controlled movement of this relatively contemporary school of dance, she also honours the very specific social context of its birth by injecting her own experimental fantasy into her performances.Mai left Brittany over thirty years ago, drawn to London by her fascination for English poetry, literature and culture, with Hackney Wick immediately becoming the base for her creative nest. It was in this eclectic and unorthodox side of urban London, her adopted city, that her soul finally found its home, where, from the moment she decided to put down roots, the contrasting sides of her expressive identity and artistic personality began to flourish. The source of Mai's inspiration fluctuates between the rebelliousness of London's punk ethos and the minimalism of her zen heritage, and, with her background in literature and a keen interest in mental health, she has created her own, unique language that precedes her and defines her. She is curious and visionary and, as such, has collaborated with artists from various disciplines, including the reggae musician Clapper Priest, the multidisciplinary Xuân Sinden, the Afro-Irish poet Grassy Noel Macken and the ambient-noise bands Ampersand and Fear of Fluffing. However, and above all else, one of her greatest achievements, has been managing to remain uncompromisingly truthful and uncomfortably relevant in a city filled with commercial art, trendy newcomers and an insanely competitive cultural scene. And now, enjoy the interview!__________Related Links: Mai Nguyen Tri: Instagram | Facebook | YouTubeFor further information about this interview, including links to anything mentioned by Mai, or to continue reading this text in Spanish, English and Italian, visit the Metralla Rosa websiteSupport the show

This episode is an interview with Biff, the co-founder of Biff's Plant Shack. Biff and Brandt have been friends since their days spent flipping burgers at McDonald's as teenagers. Now, over 20 years later, they discuss how those formative years have shaped their careers, especially the plant-based entrepreneurial journey that Biff has been on since. Whilst still obsessed with fast food, he's now the Co-founder (alongside his wife, Christa) and namesake of the successful vegan junk food brand, Biff's. One of the first brands to bring jackfruit to the UK in the form of faux chicken wings, Biff's has been taking street food, food service and retail by storm since 2017, with disruptive, delicious plant-based innovations such as the first-to-market 'sugarcane bone' for their Crispy Fried Jackfruit Wingz. In this episode, Biff and Brandt delve into the world of plant-based junk food, exploring the gap in the market that Biff discovered through his love of food and how it fuelled his success. They cover the span of Biff's journey as a brand, starting as a street food stall, entering the food delivery scene and their latest learnings and challenges of moving into FMCG retail. Biff also shares his top 5 tips for starting your own successful vegan brand in 2023.Note: this episode was recorded back in September 2022.Links Mentioned:Restaurants:Mother, Hackney Wick (now closed): https://www.instagram.com/mother.works/Xi'an Biang Biang Noodles: https://xianbiangbiangnoodles.com/Useful Tools:Street Food Soliloquy, Starting and Running a UK Street Food Business: https://www.amazon.co.uk/Street-Food-Soliloquy-Starting-Business/dp/1511940050Secret Leaders Podcast- https://www.secretleaders.com/ Black Box Thinking: The Surprising Truth About Success, Matthew Syed - https://www.amazon.co.uk/Black-Box-Thinking-Surprising-Success/dp/1473613779 Street Food USA, Netflix - https://www.netflix.com/gb/title/81249665 Biffs at Sainsbury's - https://www.sainsburys.co.uk/gol-ui/SearchResults/biffs---Find Biff at:Biff's - https://biffs.co Biff's Instagram - https://www.instagram.com/biffs_uk/ ---If you enjoy this episode, please consider subscribing. Aida Wilde and her family arrived in the UK from Iran as asylum seekers when she was a child. During her formative years she has become a well-respected print maker, educator, curator and artist in her own right. We discuss the culture shock of arriving from the middle east to Sunderland, onto her move to London and eventually her home of Hackney Wick. Aida's work documents the fast-changing landscape of the Wick as well as calling out social injustice in all its forms, in particular ridiculing the patriarchy and the absurdity of the gender gap.We talk about all of this and go off tangents about football culture, the creative industries and how she has maintained her integrity whilst dealing with the opportunities that success has brought her.At every turn Aida was open and honest with wherever the conversation took us, and I left her studio feeling extremely privileged and grateful to have been allowed into her world to record this chat.

Walking on water The modern floating church. The Diocese of London has realised its vision for the St Columba East London Community, with Genesis.: a new wide-beam canal boat crowned with an innovative pop-up roof, designed by London-based architects Denizen Works. The barge, commissioned as a mobile assembly space, is moored on the River Lee Navigation alongside here east at Queen Elizabeth Olympic park, where it will remain for three to five years before reaching other canalside communities. Developed in close collaboration with Turks Shipyard and naval architect Tony Tucker, Genesis is conceived as a modern-day mission, developing links with growing communities living around the canal in East London over the next 25 years. Its mobility and flexibility of programme will ensure lasting benefits to the diverse neighbourhoods at key regeneration sites, which include Sweetwater, Eastwick and Hackney Wick. As well as serving as a space for a church, the barge is designed with a bespoke and adaptable interior to accommodate a wide range of community activities and services, including parent and toddler groups, pilates classes and art classes, interfaith celebrations, lunch and supper clubs, live music, employment training, support workshops and counselling. Christened Genesis after the first book of the Bible, and alluding to a narrative of creation, the boat will initially serve the two existing parishes of St. Paul Old Ford and St. Mary of Eton in the Stepney Episcopal Area, with the ambition to reach new communities and bridge shifting parishes in the areas of the Diocese of London undergoing urban growth or change. Named St. Columbia East, this new community will be led by the Reverend Dave Pilkington, who was ordained in June 2019 and served on Genesis' predecessor, the interim vessel Elsdale II. Denizen Works' innovative design features a kinetic roof inspired by organ bellows. It has been crafted from concertained, translucent sailcloth, and is lined with LED lights and powered by hydraulic rams. When fully raised, the roof will transform the barge from compact and low-lying, allowing it to pass beneath bridges, expanding into an illuminated beacon designed to capture attention and attract footfall to the mission. Operated by the touch of a button, in its raised position it increases the head height of the barge to 3.6m at its highest point, creating a dramatic interior which is accessible to all. The floating hub is boarded midship; on one side of the entrance is the main assembly space, with services [kitchen, office and toilet] towards the rear of the barge. Inside, Denizen Works has created an elegant and seamless interior of light plywood walls and green linoleum floors. The expansive assembly space under the kinetic roof is designed to take a capacity of 40 people seated and up to 60 passengers when stationary. It has built-in Valchromat benches providing seating and storage along the perimeter of the room, and is fitted with marine-style bulkhead lights to create a cosy atmosphere. The furniture, designed by design company Plyco, includes custom-designed plywood stools and foldable tables for use at public events and services. An altar designed by Denizen Works featuring an angled-front face like the prow of a boat has also been fabricated, and is designed to fold down into a flat pack for easy storage. The sail stitching used on the bellows has been applied as a motif throughout the design and is carried through to a number of interior details, including aluminum screens to the windows, the design of which is inspired by rood screens; the pattern of the tiling in the kitchen; and in the form of the legs of the bespoke furniture. The motif is repeated externally in a frieze painted by a local songwriter that wraps the face of the kinetic roof. Designed with flexibility to accommodate an array of activities, Genesis will also be available for private hire and for use by local schools, to ensure that it is a se

Having spoken to plenty of long-established types from the British culinary scene, Simon welcomes some young blood to Grilling this week in the shape of Tom Brown. Born and raised in Redruth, Tom cut his teeth under local luminaries Paul Ripley and Nathan Outlaw in his native Cornwall, before opening his own restaurant, Cornerstone, in Hackney Wick. Named by Harden's as London's best seafood restaurant, Cornerstone now has a Michelin star, cementing Tom's reputation as one of our finest young chefs. Here they talk bang bang chicken, Arctic Monkeys, souped-up Vectras, barbecued lobster, and Tom's bizarre phobia of baked beans. See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
For about twenty years, not a single pint was been pulled in The Lord Napier pub, located near to the Hackney Wick overground station. The pub was licensed in 1868 under the name The White's Arms and was then advertised for sale, whereupon its news owners changed its name to The Lord Napier. During the twentieth century, the pub appeared in the local and national news as the site of numerous robberies and assaults. After its closure in 1995, the former pub attracted squat parties, became known as a destination for illegal raves in the early 2000s and began to be covered in graffiti. In 2016, artist Aida Wilde commissioned 29 local street artists as part of a 48-hour takeover of the building as a ‘symbol of protest against [the] gentrification' which was happening in the local area. The pub has been attracting tourists to its ever changing exterior ever since it was reimagined with its iconic graffiti makeover. After attracting new ownership, the pub is expected to go through an extensive programme of refurbishment.
Makoto Chi (he/him) - Berlin 2016 If you haven't already seen @makoto.chi / www.linktr.ee/ma_ko_to I feel safe and sane when friendships land on many of the same important pages (a huge sigh of relief). At the same time being humbled by intense connections that keep unfolding. Once again (gratefully, my friends know me well) I was introduced to Makoto, who came highly regarded and fills those shoes. I'm pretty sure we stumbled into each other at Michele's in Hackney Wick (as I would have arrived disheveled from poorly managing my time / energy / expectations of myself) and as I recall he was very calm and patient to let me land and then most likely go eat great pizza around the corner. On top of being the lovely human that he is, Makoto is a brilliant artist, tattooer, activist - a partner, ally, friend to who is fortunate enough. We would have him around each summer and then I would be back in Vancouver in the winter.
Have a peek @brody_polinsky / www.universeberlin.com It was my turn next to be interviewed (with the same lacking questions). Another PG later we were timely interrupted by the biggest gong in the UK (the sound permeates the building during a gong bath treatment). I have always felt like Hackney Wick was a second home (even as it changes since Stratford being connected and the skatepark being erased). Hearing my own voice really is uncomfortable (but its the only one I got!) Enjoy, this time capsule is lovely to revisit.
Michele Servadio (he/him) - London 2016 Please check out the mastermind @servadio_ / www.servadio.com @thebodyofreverbs As per usual, I woke up on the roof of the tattoo station / high bed / storage, got my shit together with some spiritual practice before Michele gently knocked (on his own door). He always arrived gently to see how I was, we grabbed our skates and jammed down the road to get a full English (even though we probably didn't have enough time before the days clients arrived). I believe this day my appointment canceled so we had some unexpected free time (he was always doing prints using various techniques and nudged me to do an edition of wood cuts). I had an email interview I was avoiding to commit to and mentioned it to him (he said he had the same email) I suggested to just use our phones and ask each other the questions the dude sent over and be done with it. As it turns out it was really easy and kind of fun (he's pretty concise and I talk too much). This project made sense to us, choosing to catch moments in time and share them (I was still blasting around the world then burning out). Waking up in the creative space you work in and then sharing it with residents and guests is delicate balance for this Libra. I would say I never really figured it out at UNIV ERSE Studio but tried diligently the hard way. Through many years visiting each other between London and Berlin, Michele never flinched at my particularities for life rituals, tattooing, sobriety and otherwise. This is very much why it works so well (for me) I feel safe and super inspired by his process that never is at rest. Before that though, we discover the origins of Howling Hops in the Hackney Wick beer scene, enjoy three of their beers, and talk about how COVID has affected things for Howling Hops over the past 12 months. Chris' ultimate bar saw some great choices from across the world, including a new to me German lager, a Kernel classic and a belter from Burning Sky. Recorded via Zoom Recordings. Where professional creators share with you tools, so you can thrive... while your'e still ALIVE! Wilfrid Wood's plasticine clay sculptures are truly one of a kind. His sculptures are refreshingly honest and playful. He merges portraiture with the absurdity of the human experience into something completely unique and raw. I absolutely love and am inspired by this work! He also has a running project where he draws a live sitter everyday with pastels on coloured paper. Wilfrid was born in London and grew up in rural Sussex. He studied graphics at Central St. Martins, then got a job in publishing. He got bored of that and applied to train as a 'headbuilder' for the satirical TV program Spitting Image. When that ended he became a freelance sculptor. He lives in East London and his studio is in Hackney Wick, right next to the Olympics. What do two travel editors do when they're faced with months of lockdown and lots of paused plans? We side-step tie-dye projects and sourdough starters in favour of creating our own at-home adventures. For the past few months, we've fantasised about travel more than ever. Whether rustling up our favourite dishes from the Amalfi Coast, immersing ourselves in diverse cultures through literature or binging on Netflix's globe-trotting flicks, we've become obsessed with incorporating travel into our daily lives. Join us, Editor-in-Chief India Dowley and Content Editor Fleur Rollet-Manus, as we discuss how you can do the same. We catch up with chef Tom Brown, the culinary creative behind Hackney Wick's hit restaurant Cornerstone. He talks to us about his travels in Japan, secret beaches in Mexico and reveals how to nail the recipe for those crab crumpets. We'll also be revealing the European hotels we're checking into as lockdown measures ease. We'd love to know where you're travelling next and how you think the travel landscape might change post-pandemic. Tahmina Negmat is currently on a year-long residency at the Carpenters Wharf Studios in Hackney Wick and making paintings about Joe Exotic from Tiger King in her quarantine flat in Moscow. Tahmina treats her studio as a spectacle arena where she wants to throw a real celebration for the anti-hero the Trickster ("A demonic-comic double of a cultural hero, endowed with the features of a naughty dodger”. For her The Trickster is the main protagonist of today and takes a lot of inspiration from cinema and books. . . As a way into this thinking Tahmina explains that her painting ‘Endless Infatuations with Malcolm Mcdowell', which you can see over on our instagram page is a tribute towards my obsession over the portrait of the antihero. Sh says ‘I have a real antagonistic reaction to pitch-perfect moralism, as I think I see most things that are perfect and clean-cut as a nice antisocial package where the whole investment goes towards oneself. However the anti-heroes are raw, and they are rare. They have this weird self conflicted duality going on. Similarly like looking at the rock in Goya’s painting and never quite seeing just the rock, but the tripled eyed devil, ongoing mutating faces, a depiction of the birth of something and the whole mortality is in that rock. So I see the same rawness and wrongness in the rounded and enlarged facial features of Malcolm McDowell who played a lead role in Kubrick’s “Clockwork Orange”. And Malcolm’s face is round and beautiful like it’s been sat on by the birth of Venus. . . London is blessed with hundreds of great pubs. But for me one stands tall above the rest: a beacon of everything that is great about this British institution. It also happens to be my local. The Southampton Arms in Kentish Town, North London feels like it’s been there forever—it’s all worn wood, rickety chairs, stained walls, and sepia photos. It breaks all the perceived rules of running a pub. Up until last year it had 12 cask lines, six cider lines, and just two keg lines. It didn’t take cash and only served a few bar snacks. It had a one-page website and an almost untouched Twitter account. On paper it shouldn’t work, and yet the perfectly kept casks flowed constantly. Things have changed a little since then, but not by much. On a Monday night, during the live piano performances, you can hardly move; on Tuesday, during the pub quiz, the same drunk man screams questions over the top of people’s heads at the bar. Even at the height of winter, Friday and Saturday crowds spill out into the tiny backyard area, blocking the way to the outhouse toilet. It’s the most effortlessly welcoming, cozy pub I have ever been to, and it quickly became my favorite pub in the world. Amazingly, it only celebrated its 10-year anniversary in November. Its cofounder, Pete Holt, is a soft-spoken guy who has that enviable skill of seeming to like exactly what everyone else likes. Despite the rise of keg beer and gastropubs he wanted to open a simple real ale boozer, and it seems everyone in North London approved. He did the same with the Cock Tavern in Hackney, when he opened the borough’s first brewpub in 2011. Howling Hops started in the basement but just a few years later expanded to its own brewery and taproom site in Hackney Wick, where it now pours a wide range of beers straight from the tanks. Its beers are staunchly modern and usually hop-forward, but you’ll still see lots of Howling Hops casks at the Southampton sat next to breweries that have been stocked for the full decade—breweries like Marble, Thornbridge, Moor, and Oakham. In my conversation with Pete, we talk about the inspiration behind his three sites; the unique challenges of running a business that spans production, logistics and serving; and what it’s been like to watch London change over a decade through the lens of beer. This is Pete Holt of Howling Hops. Listen in.

Jayda G’s debut album “Significant Changes" has a quality to it that’s hard to place in one space and time. At times, it's studio 54 at its peak, whilst at others it's tackling some the biggest issues of the present day. We’re used to club tracks sampling snippets of old documentaries and classic films, whereas on "Significant Changes'’ you’ll find Jayda using Orca cries and quotes from climate scientists. Jayda G sat down with Adam Corner, journalist and Research Director at Climate Outreach to talk about the melding of her music career and conservationist work and her series of talks engaging a new generation of music fans with the science behind the headlines. The next instalment of Jayda’s JMG Talks is scheduled for 22nd May at Giant Steps in Hackney Wick, tickets available via the DICE app. Remember to rate and subscribe to the Ninja Tune podcast wherever you get it.

During Pride Festival I was particularly struck by the speech given by Peter Tatchell on behalf of the Peter Tatchell Foundation. They are a group that - in their words - seeks to promote and protect the human rights of individuals, communities and nations, in the UK and internationally. What caught my attention most about Peter's speech was who he had with him on stage: Espoir from Cameroon and Solomon from Uganda. As a Ugandan I must admit that I am only vaguely aware of how bad the conditions are for LGBT+ people there. Both Solomon and Espoir were kind enough to share the appalling truth of their experiences back home that have lead them to seek asylum in the UK. Their stories are at times uncomfortable to hear, but it is important that their voices are heard. Thank you - from the bottom of my heart - to Espoir, Peter, and Solomon for taking the time to talk to me. The crystal ball in our office is also doing pretty well too – it just so happens that we have one final special podcast lined up with The Bottle Shop's Andrew Morgan on this sunny week. Completely on his turf this time, we've got wall-to-wall of beer. Kicking us off is Rebecca Pate from Mason & Company. It's fair to say that these guys just love the East London food & drink scene. What makes us say that? Just the fact that they run the Five Point Brewing Co, they are behind the amazing Capish food menu and they showcase it all from their Hackney Wick premises. Having tried a few of the Five Points products, we decided to make this session a proper tasting session by adding Hackney Brewery to the mix. Founder Jon Swain brought a collection of his best beers to the party and, well, it all got a bit boozy. It's fair to say Andrew was in Sue's good books for inviting along such fabulous guests.
Welcome to this special edition of the GBH podcast, which forms part of our Coming to America series, brought to you in collaboration with Guinness. Before we get started today, I want to tell you how excited I am about bringing our Uppers and Downers festival of coffee, beer and coffee beers to London this May. It takes place at Mick’s Garage in Hackney Wick on Saturday May 19th and will feature over 30 exceptional brewers and roasters—including today’s guests, Boundary—each collaborating on some new and exclusive beers that you’ll only be able to try at the event. Tickets are limited and selling fast, so head over to goodbeerhunting.com and hit get tickets to secure your space. In our Coming to America series we’ve brought you stories about upstart and iconic breweries from around the world that have been impacting U.S. drinkers for generations, and those that are just beginning to make the journey. Stories like how Pilsner Urquell originally came to the US, and how young breweries like Denmark’s Alefarm are trying to find their place in the same market in the age of modern and local. Today’s guest is Matthew Dick, co-founder of Boundary Brewing Cooperative, based in Belfast, Northern Ireland. If you read our article on Boundary back in May 2016 then you’ll already be somewhat familiar with this Northern Irish upstart, which is only the second brewery to open in Belfast. Using the cooperative model as a base, which Dick will explain in detail later in this episode, Boundary began its journey in 2015, thanks to the investments made by over 1000 owner-members. It’s a model that’s relatively unique within the UK brewing industry, but its one that’s so far proved successful for this young business Before the brewery opened however, Dick spent many years living out in the United States. He met his wife in Reno, Nevada, where he lived for several years, and latterly he spent some time in Austin, Texas, where he worked for the now defunct homebrew equipment manufacturer, Brewbot. To say that the US brewing scene inspired Dick—in particular breweries working with barrels and mixed-fermentation beers like Jester King—would be something of an understatement. An American-inspired entrepreneurial spirit resonates through everything that Boundary does. With three years under its belt it’s starting to become established in its home markets of the UK and Ireland, but this isn’t without its challenges, especially with the ever-darker clouds of Brexit looming on the horizon. Now, however, Boundary is beginning to look further afield and after securing a distribution deal with Shelton Brothers it has started to export its beer to the US. Boundary had the honor of taking over the taps at DC’s Churchkey this past St. Patrick’s Day. It also recently debuted its beer in New York City with an event at The Jeffrey. In this episode we’ll learn about the value of these US exports to such a small brewery, and how it balances this alongside activity the needs of its domestic market.
