So if you go back about 10 years, there was nothing in the Midwest on multi mountain passes. You know, Vale had started to add a few things to Epic Pass and B Brighton and Afton Alps and Wilmot and such.00:19:53.000 --> 00:20:03.000Stuart Winchester: But the real inflection point came in 2019, when IndiePass came along. 2018, Icon added a couple things. It's even going back a little bit further. I think the first initial, if you look at the statistics and you obviously know all this offhand, but back when you go back to Vail's acquisition of Wilmont, Afton.00:21:02.000 --> 00:21:19.000Matthew Zabransky: Brighton back in like 2012. I mean, that's really what started to to kick off this like idea of like. Maybe the Midwest has some legs in it, as far as like developing skiers, and then, you know, bringing them into a pass portfolio that could bring them out west. So that was the very early set, you know, early iteration of this. And then, obviously, as we went along, there wasn't.00:21:19.000 --> 00:21:37.000Matthew Zabransky: too many options outside of just the epic pass. But then, like you mentioned, Indie Pass came in, and I knew, and it's you know, as we dive into this, I do want to do a little disclosure here, and like Indie Pass was my very 1st client from a production side of things. So Doug and I, because I I saw the opportunity like there was an absolute gold mine here. And that's what we've seen the last, I would say, 5 to 10 years. Specifically, we've seen more people traveling around in the Midwest. You'll catch people at any stereo across the Midwest. That's not their home hill, and that's not how it used.00:22:15.000 --> 00:22:27.000Matthew Zabransky: you go ski or one little local place for the most part, you might do your weekend trip up to Boyne or something, but you would never catch people going to some of these really small places, you know, outside of just the local crew there, so it's been really cool to watch people.00:22:27.000 --> 00:22:45.000Matthew Zabransky: travel and discover, more importantly, the different areas, uh, throughout the Midwest. I think a lot of that had to do with IndyPass's push in the Midwest, because, as we're gonna talk about here in a second, it was an absolute auto-buy. Like, there was not even a question about it. It was like you almost just were gonna if you lived in the Midwest, and you like skiing, and you don't. You know you like traveling around checking out new things. There was no reason not to buy it. I mean, there's people that have been buying the IndyPass specifically now. Up until this season, it was like they were probably on their fifth year of doing it and just continue to. And to be honest, there wasn't any reason not to because the pricing has stayed relatively affordable.00:24:01.000 --> 00:24:17.000Matthew Zabransky: they keep they kept strengthening their pro, their their product. I mean, like they just kept adding more ski areas in the Midwest. And so in in a lot of times the pass would pay itself off within a couple of visits based off of some of the redemption rates that you'd be getting at some somewhere like Lutz and Snow River.00:24:17.000 --> 00:24:34.000Matthew Zabransky: um, those are all, like, you know, $100 tickets, so you buy… you go there once or twice, you get two days of each of them, and basically that's already done. So if you already had one of those trips kind of on there, and if you lived in Chicago, you're going to Granite Peak usually once or twice a year. If you lived in Minnesota, you're going to Lutz.00:24:34.000 --> 00:24:52.000Matthew Zabransky: So it almost became this thing. And then you shuffle in like nubs, knob, and all that. So it it very much was like, yeah, we're gonna buy it every single year, you know, we might not. And some people are hardcore and going to all the places they could. And some people were just, you know. Hey? I'm gonna buy it because I'm gonna go for a weekend, so I might as well. I mean, I don't… of course, I don't have any of the IndyPass numbers, but I would… I would venture to say that the Midwest had to be a very big portion of their portfolio from the sales and redemption standpoint.00:25:03.000 --> 00:25:20.000Stuart Winchester: So the traditional numbers that Indy has given me, and it's been a couple years since Doug Fish provided these round numbers to me, but he told me about half of their sales came in New England, and 25% came in the Midwest, which is a really big number for a national pass. But I knew that this time was going to come at some point. I mean, you know that every every year it's going to be something new. Someone's changing. It's just kind of the nature of the business. But.00:27:50.000 --> 00:28:02.000Matthew Zabransky: it was not a shock to me when, um, when these changes were announced, uh, both in the spring and then more recently in the last few weeks and stuff, so it wasn't… I kind of saw it coming, it was just a matter of, like, when was it gonna happen.00:28:02.000 --> 00:28:14.000Stuart Winchester: So everyone left… they seemed as though… Epic and Icon seemed like they were just leaving the Midwest to Indy, to take. Uh, which is not my opinion of them, but I think that's probably what they thought from Colorado, which is why they dropped Lutzen and Granite Peak. If you have an Icon Pass, you get two days of these mountains. So that's what the two day tier is. They added Buck Hill. Uh Indy said, no, you're not allowed to do that. So Indy removed them.00:29:40.000 --> 00:29:53.000Stuart Winchester: Buck Hill has been on Icon, and that was sort of the first… when you first saw that, did you think, okay, here we go, Icon is finally starting to realize the value of the Midwest, and if not, what was the moment that you did think that they got it?00:29:53.000 --> 00:30:09.000Matthew Zabransky: I would, you know, the whole time I've been shaking my head a little bit because it's just ironic to me that Boeing, Boeing, one of the biggest companies in, you know, that started in the Midwest, that literally has its roots here. And I'm just shocked that Icon hasn't.00:30:09.000 --> 00:30:26.000Matthew Zabransky: made this push earlier, and it took this long. But that was like the 1st that was the 1st like mention of that. And the other connection that was really kind of just crazy to me is, there's so many people from the twin cities that go to Big Sky like a lot like you talk to people all over the place. It's a huge destination for specifically for Minnesota, it seems. So I was always thinking, man, like if they were just to strengthen this pass a little bit in the Midwest, give somebody a reason to, to jump on to the icon pass. They're probably going out to Big Sky anyway.00:30:42.000 --> 00:30:57.000Matthew Zabransky: now all of a sudden, you give them another reason to buy the full pass, you got some… some more local hills, some day… like, weekend trips, you can go up to Lutzen, things like that, and I think that's when… when Lutzen and those guys came on, that was, like, full-blown, that's gonna… that changes everything. Basically, if you're on the eastern side of the lake, you're kind of going to stick to mostly your lower peninsula, maybe go up to the UP occasionally. But if you're on the western side over here, in the Minneapolis.00:31:14.000 --> 00:31:31.000Matthew Zabransky: Um, there was really no offerings for Icon, so it really made no sense at that point to buy an Icon Pass. You know, maybe Chicago, you drive up to Boeing, but you're kind of on that cusp there, where it's like, mmm… but I think once they strengthened it this past year, now it's like… it's a fair fight, in my opinion. June 24th, 2006. Historic Fort York, Toronto. Twenty-two songs, and buried at number fourteen is a track The Tragically Hip only ever played nine times.That is the version we spin. Same night they pulled '38 Years Old' out of the vault for the first time since July of 1995. Nine plays for 'No Threat', per Hipbase and setlist.fm, and one of those nine got audited live on this stream. There was an entry claiming November 15th, 1991. Andrew went after it, Steve pulled the tape down to check, and the correction went in while the mics were still hot.'No Threat' opens "Yer Favourites", the November 2005 double disc where fans voted on every track except the two nobody had heard yet. This one, and 'The New Maybe' closing disc two. Adam Kasper made both, the same man who made "In Between Evolution" the year before. Track one is the brand new song. Track two is 'Grace, Too'. Kevin has a word for that sequencing decision, and the word is bold.It landed at 85 on the TTHTop40 Countdown, between 'Daredevil' and 'Sherpa'. Then the poll came back from the Facebook group with a stack of loves, which was nobody's prediction at this table, plus eight percent who came right out and said they dislike it. Steve did not vote. Steve tells us where he would have landed, and it opens something bigger than the song: what do you do with a band you love and songs you don't? He has a list. He is not sorry about the list.Then there is the guitar. Jeff from Vaughan puts it in the chat first, that it is the guitar that doesn't work here, and Kevin has been circling the same thing all week. A chord that goes somewhere your ear refuses to follow. Public Education Challenges It's the start of school for many districts in the state, but many public schools are facing unprecedented challenges as they work to educate today's young minds. There is greater support on a statewide level for school choice than ever. Ohio projects it will pay private schools $1.26 billion in the 2026-2027 school year in taxpayer-funded vouchers. Public school advocates claim the state underfunds public schools and a coalition of Ohio public schools is suing over the constitutionality of EdChoice vouchers. On a federal level, President Donald Trump established a national school voucher program last year that could soon provide taxpayer dollars for parents to spend on private school tuition. Public districts are also facing lower enrollment rates, staff shortages, and new technology changes, with the growing popularity of artificial intelligence. The National Association of Education president-elect is visiting Ohio as part of a back-to-school tour. That's the whole run, first to last, June 2000 to a night in November 2009. Fifteen of those as an opener, which makes sense to everybody at the table. Fifteen as an encore, which makes sense to nobody. It never went out as a single. The record it sits second on went two times platinum in Canada and took home the Juno, and it's the second of the two Steve Berlin made with the boys. 'Tiger The Lion' landed at number 65 on the TTHTop40 Countdown and not one person in this room is at peace with that.Then there's the poll. Just over half the Facebook group came back with love it, which the panel did not see coming, and close to eight in ten landed at like it or better. For a track this strange, sitting where it sits, that's a number worth chewing on. Somebody in the comments wanted an option between love it and like it. Jeff has a fix for that, and it's better than extra medium.Duxoop from Toledo dropped a question in the chat that stopped the table cold. What is that opening noise? The Baghdad Shuffle is a crime thriller set against the 2003 invasion of Iraq, but much of the world behind it comes directly from author Josh Bates's own experience as a Marine. Bates was serving as a Marine infantry officer when his unit pushed north from Kuwait into Iraq and eventually into Baghdad. What stayed with him was not only the combat, but the chaos that followed the collapse of Saddam Hussein's regime—the looting, criminal activity, money left behind, and Marines suddenly dealing with situations far outside conventional warfare. One episode in particular, a Baghdad bank robbery involving thieves trying to breach a vault with RPGs, became part of the inspiration for the story he would eventually write. Although the novel is fiction, Bates says much of the Iraq section grew out of things he actually experienced during the initial push to Baghdad and the period that followed. He estimates that roughly 85 to 90 percent of the events informing the first act happened to him in some form, then were condensed and reshaped for the story. We'll talk with Josh about his Marine Corps career, his experiences during the invasion of Iraq, and how those memories eventually became the foundation for a novel. We'll also discuss the mix of military experience, crime, humor, and absurdity that shaped The Baghdad Shuffle, and why he wanted the book to reflect the perspective of the young Marines who actually lived through those early days of the war. Josh Bates is a retired Marine infantry and intelligence officer, podcaster, and author. The Baghdad Shuffle is his first novel.

The Detroit Lions clarified their center plan: Juice Scruggs returned to first-team work and Tate Ratledge took center reps, setting Scruggs on the Week 1 path while Detroit stress-tests depth. In a rain-soaked session after the Cincinnati preseason opener, coaches rotated interior linemen to lock in trusted combinations ahead of the NFL regular season. Did the Detroit Lions clarify who starts at center in Week 1? Yes. Juice Scruggs is tracking as the starting center, and Detroit cross-trained Tate Ratledge at center with the starters while keeping Seth McLaughlin in a reserve lane. As Jeff Risdon noted, Scruggs has NFL pivot experience and projects as the player snapping the ball to Jared Goff in Week 1. When Juice Scruggs worked at center, Tate Ratledge played right guard and Christian Mahogany played left guard. When Scruggs sat, Ratledge slid inside to center, Ben Bartch came in at left guard and Mahogany moved to right guard. McLaughlin did not run with the first team in those center looks. The staff even evaluated wet-ball snapping in the rain to prepare for outdoor games. Dan Campbell previously praised McLaughlin's effort while acknowledging his smaller build, reinforcing the view of him as a dependable backup. What roster moves and signings changed the bottom of the depth chart? Detroit waived with injury designation running back Kai Robichaux and safety Law Strickland, both hurt against the Cincinnati Bengals, and both will revert to injured reserve after waivers. Dan Campbell said Kai Robichaux broke his foot, and Law Strickland suffered a non-contact lower-leg injury. The Lions added running back Trayveon Williams and cornerback Ekow Boye-Doe. Trayveon Williams, a 2019 sixth-round pick out of Texas A&M, is a compact inside runner. Tim Carman is a Nashville-based drummer, author, and educator known for his deep pocket, soulful touch, and command of blues, soul jazz, and roots music. Originally from the Boston area, Carman built his reputation on the New England music scene as a first-call sideman and session musician. Ohio is expanding its fracking industry despite concerns of its environmental impact 1.4 billion gallons of fracking wastewater, or toxic brine, is being pumped into injection wells for long term storage in Ohio every year. This salty wastewater byproduct of fracking is full of heavy metals, radioactive materials, cancer-causing benzene and hazardous chemical additives from the fracking process. Just outside of Marietta, the injection wells that are supposed to hold this sludge and keep it away from nearby drink water aquafers are failing. At least one third of the toxic fracking wastewater currently stored underground in Ohio comes from other states. In addition to this already existing containment and importing concerns, Ohio has been increasing its own fracking footprint over the last three years by leasing out its public land to this industry, oftentimes to out-of-state developers. In September, nearly 3,000 acres of Wayne National Forest, Ohio's only national forest, will be auctioned off for these purposes, despite concerns about fracking's environmental impact and effect on nearby populations. Thursday on the "Sound of Ideas" hosted by Stephanie Haney, we'll discuss fracking, its toxic wastewater byproduct and the impact its storage could have in Ohio. The protest period for the September sale of land for fracking in Wayne National Forest is open until Monday, Aug. 17. Protests must be mailed or hand delivered to the U.S. Department of the Interior's Bureau of Land Management. Note: We reached out to the Bureau of Land Management and the Ohio Oil and Gas Land Management Commission, both of which are organizations involved in the leasing of development rights for possible fracking. While the Ohio Oil and Gas Commission did not respond to requests for a statement, the Bureau of Land Management provided the following statement to the Sound of Ideas after this episode aired: Oil and gas development on public lands generates substantial revenue that directly benefits the American people, with roughly half of all royalties and fees returning to states like Ohio to support local services and infrastructure. The Bureau of Land Management follows all applicable laws and regulations when evaluating lease parcels, and the Wayne National Forest has confirmed its consent for this lease sale. Hydraulic fracturing is one of the techniques operators may use to produce energy resources, and the BLM requires thorough environmental review before development occurs. Multiple environmental analyses—including the 2016 Environmental Assessment and the 2025 Supplemental Environmental Assessment—found that oil and gas development in the region can provide economic activity, jobs, and revenue while operating under required environmental safeguards designed to protect land, water, wildlife, and surrounding communities. Detroit Lions center Cade Mays suffered a small broken bone in his wrist and will miss eight to ten weeks, immediately reshaping Detroit's center plan. Seth McLaughlin handled most first-team snaps today and Juice Scruggs reenters the competition once healthy, while the quarterback room tightens after Teddy Bridgewater stepped away. How serious is Cade Mays's injury and what is the timeline? Cade Mays is out eight to ten weeks with a wrist fracture, per Ian Rapoport, and the Detroit Lions will treat it as a significant in-season absence. Head coach Dan Campbell declined to give a timeline but said Mays would be back for the playoffs. As Jeff Risdon noted on the Detroit Lions Podcast, this is a major setback for an inexperienced interior line that was counting on Mays's early run-game power and communication. The most logical roster move is injured reserve with designation to return. Expecting Mays back after the bye is the early speculation. The takeaway is firm, the Lions must build cohesion without their best center for the first stretch of 2026. Who snaps the ball now for the Detroit Lions? Seth McLaughlin, Detroit Lions undrafted rookie center, took the majority of first-team reps today, and Detroit Lions center Juice Scruggs returns to that competition when his soft-tissue issue clears. Both will get evaluated with first-team work. McLaughlin is quick, smart, and agile, but undersized, and the jump from third-team work to facing Detroit Lions defensive tackle Alim McNeill and Detroit Lions edge rusher Aidan Hutchinson showed early. He settled in with some wins and some losses, a work in progress. Scruggs, currently out for Thursday, started at center for the Houston Texans in the first half of 2024 before injuries moved him to guard. He was better at center than guard, and once healthy he will get a real look to outplay McLaughlin. Expect the staff to toggle reps to find the cleanest protections and run fits. What does Teddy Bridgewater stepping away mean for the QB room? Josh Dobbs is now the primary backup to Detroit Lions quarterback Jared Goff, with undrafted rookie Luke Altmyer behind him. Depth if the backup must play is a concern. Jeff Risdon said he likes Dobbs personally and believes he gets it, but added that if Dobbs has to play, he is not feeling great about that. On Luke Altmyer, Risdon described the camp you would expect from an undrafted rookie with promise and a lot of work to do. The message is clear, Goff's health is paramount, and the staff needs clean centers to keep the operation on schedule. Can the offense still fire without Cade Mays? Yes, the offense remains good, but its ceiling drops without Cade Mays anchoring the interior. Detroit Lions tight end Sam LaPorta flashed again and Jared Goff looked great overall, though he did throw a pick. The line has bright spots. Detroit Lions left guard Christian Mahogany has run away with the job and looked very good again. Detroit Lions right guard Tate Ratledge is steady in year two, but losing Mays removes a veteran support hub between him and rookie right tackle Blake Miller. Miller needs more consistency and was beaten at times by Aidan Hutchinson, Detroit Lions edge rusher DJ Wonnum, and defensive end Ahmed Hassanein. Detroit Lions left tackle Taylor Decker's limited practice time last year showed how missed reps hurt cohesion, and Jeff Risdon stressed that five playing as one matters. Andrew read the paragraph aloud; it describes the two as "lovable, loutish, and incredibly accomplished guys… not bad for a pair of dudes with limited mental capacity."JD's verdict: lots of love for the Hip Museum, but that one's a reach.Gus / UsDave's thesis: he doesn't hear a bear at all. "It's not what's troubling Gus. It's what's troubling us." He's been on that line for twenty years.JD points out the Gordism that makes it work — dropping the G, so "troublin' us" and "troubling Gus" are phonetically the same thing.Duxoop extends it: we've all watched a zoo animal pace or swim figure eights, and that should be troubling us.On the lyrics generally: Gord's word-smithery rewards straining to hear it, and the panel confesses to mumbling through parts for two decades. Compared to Nautical Disaster — all story, no chorus, no pattern — Gus is manageable, but only just.Duxoop's StoryLast year, when the countdown hit No. 31, Duxoop was three months into a nursing home stay with medical issues. Twenty-odd years earlier he'd started going to karaoke — big, scary-looking, socially awkward, mistaken for the bouncer. Now he was in his 60s, in a wheelchair, and the line landed like a ton of bricks: old and grey, and no one's afraid anymore.He sang it at the nursing home. "I don't think I've ever sung a Hip song with more feeling than I do with Gus." Grace, Too he can't fake — he feels like a schmuck trying to match Gord's intensity. Gus he doesn't fake.And after a week of thinking about it for this episode, he made a bold statement: Gus is now his favourite Tragically Hip song, over Grace, Too.Dave's Story — Al, Gus, and Colonel MustardDave's friend Al Morton died suddenly last November. They bonded over the Hip and golf at Dave's club. Al's nickname was Gus.In their fantasy football pick'em league, Al's picks stayed on the board for the rest of the NFL season. "A real lump in my throat."Al's memorial is this Friday at the Dunany Country Club in Wentworth, Quebec — halfway between Ottawa and Montreal. Ashes scattered around the course in the morning; speeches and a gathering at night, billed as his "after par-ty."The family asked for seven or eight Hip songs. Dave and friends have twenty ready, after two nights jamming at his buddy Chris's place. He made them learn Gus — he couldn't imagine doing a show for Al without it.The band is named Colonel Mustard, after Al's imported 1970s Mercedes. Wentworth, Quebec's Tragically Hip cover band. Dave waited 45 years to do this.His approach: very much not trying to be Gord.
