This MBM conversation is with Nausheen Khan, an independent film-maker based in India, whose documentary Land of My Dreams is a retracing of her journey as an Indian Muslim woman as she covered the Shaheen Bagh protests in 2019-2020.In this conversation, Nausheen shares her introspection around her identity growing up, the effect of stereotypes on her, and reclaiming her Muslimness in more ways than one. We discuss the myriad forms in which being a woman in the present times challenges us to show up with more clarity and confidence in every space we choose to be in.We also discuss the impact of friendships and the need for bonds that allow one to express the vulnerabilities one lives with, as a woman, an artist, a Muslim, among others. For Nausheen, living with joy is the biggest act of resilience and this conversation is a snippet of that.About Nausheen Khan Nausheen Khan is an independent filmmaker based in India, working on gender perspectives amid conflict and political unrest in contemporary times. Land of My Dreams is her first self-financed feature-length documentary film. Joining us today is the directing great Neil Marshall (Dog Soildiers, The Decent) and the inspiring actress and producer Liz Farahadi to talk about SHORT film making, the things that can go wrong, why they are important, why planning is vital and how you always need to be ready to adapt. AND their short film Keep Young and Beautiful. We also talk applying for film festivals, why you might or might got get selected, producing short films, what goes into them and the difference between shorts and features for directors. Neil burst onto the scene and punched us all in the face with the cult werewolf action-horror classic "Dog Soldiers" and then, he plunged us into true claustrophobic terror with "The Descent" a film that won critical acclaim and cemented his status as a master of modern horror. He then unleashed the post-apocalyptic action mayhem of "Doomsday" and the brutal historical epic "Centurion,". More recently, he directed the period horror "The Reckoning" and the creature feature "The Lair." And it's not just features! He's brought his distinctive, cinematic vision to some of the biggest TV shows out there, directing two of the most epic battle episodes in "Game of Thrones" history – "Blackwater" and "The Watchers on the Wall" – which earned him an Emmy nomination. He's also helmed episodes of "Black Sails," "Constantine," "Hannibal," "Westworld," and "Lost in Space. And also joining us today, we have an incredible talent in Liz Farahadi, who truly embodies the spirit of independent filmmaking: an accomplished actress and a dedicated producer who champions diverse voices and impactful stories. You might know her from her acting roles in compelling independent films like "Losing Grace" (where she also served as a producer) and "Wild Bones," as well as various theatre productions and commercials. She's also had roles in the well-loved British soaps, "EastEnders" and "Coronation Street," along with other dramas like "Two Thousand Acres of Sky," "Miss Marple," and "Doctor Who. She's a passionate advocate for filmmakers, recognizing the need for support, especially for those from marginalized backgrounds. This drive led her to found and direct The Soho London Independent Film Festival (SohoLIFF), a fantastic platform dedicated to creating opportunities and celebrating films with social and environmental impact. She's currently in post-production on new short films like "Losing Grace" and "Daughter," and developing features like "Xenos" and "Polly." Her latest film as an actress and producer, "Keep Young & Beautiful," delves into the darker world of beauty standards with a powerful and humorous edge. In this episode of The Directors' Take podcast, your hosts Oz Arshad and Marcus Anthony Thomas are joined by Philip Ilson, the Co-Founder and Co-Director of the BAFTA and BIFA Qualifying London Short Film Festival. As a director looking to break into the industry, you need to get your film into reputable film festivals to platform your work and gain industry attention. The rejection and lack of feedback associated with this process can be disheartening to many, so we brought Philip on to help break down their decision-making process for you all. This conversation covers:   -What are film festivals? -How he created LSFF. -What makes a good short film? -What is the ideal length for a short film? -Is there unconscious bias in the selection process? -Why don't film festivals provide feedback on the shorts submitted? -What does the festival programming process look like? -Do film festivals have an agenda? -What does he think about the film festival pathway?   Philip co-founded LSFF with Kate Taylor in 2003 under its original moniker Halloween Short Film Festival, following ten years of running its predecessor The Halloween Society through its various guises as a film and club night. Philip has previously programmed for BFI London Film Festival, East End Film Festival, Cork Film Festival, Branchage Festival, Latitude and Curzon Soho.   Nuggets of the week   Oz: The Making of Rocky vs Drago by Sylvester Stallone Marcus: Arnold - Netflix TV Mini Series Philip: Whatever happened to the C86 Kids?: An Indie Odyssey by Nige Tassell    Credits Music by Oliver Wegmüller   Socials Instagram: @TheDirectorsTakePodcast Twitter: @DirectorsTake LSFF socials: https://shortfilms.org.uk/   If you have any questions relating to the episode or have topics you would like covering in future releases, reach out to us at TheDirectorsTake@Outlook.com.

As Coco Green gets stuck in the final chapters of her PhD, we take a break from our usual format to publish Q&As and whatever audio output we fancy.  To mark our partnership with the Clermont-Ferrand International Film Festival and celebrate short films, we had a chat with Philip Ilson, founder and director of the London Short Film Festival, and film programmer (for the BFI, amongst others) .
