Andrew Hung Fuck Buttons brings tales of dancing in music videos, songwriting on third solo album Deliverance and scoring The Greasy Strangler to the podcast. He also debates electronic music as abstract art and whether music artists ever are their true selves to their fans. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.
IDLES are a British rock band formed in Bristol in 2009. The band consists of Joe Talbot (vocals), Mark Bowen (guitar), Lee Kiernan (guitar), Adam Devonshire (bass) and Jon Beavis (drums). A self-proclaimed 'angry band' from Bristol in Southwest England, IDLES take the fury of punk rock and wed it to a muscular but moody instrumental attack that matches the literate, purposeful menace of their lyrics. Lead singer and lyricist Joe Talbot's full-bodied ranting, in which he offers his vehement opinions on the state of British culture and his own personal issues, is matched by the rich, angular blast of the musicians, who can swing from melodic to brutally hard at a moment's notice. In this episode all songs selected by IDLES as guests for Australian TV show Rage, on Saturday June 8, 2019. Lineup: Crows, Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds, Grinderman, The Stooges, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Heavy Lungs, Spiritualized, Queens of the Stone Age, LCD Soundsystem, Grimes, Fuck Buttons, BAMBARA, Parquet Courts, Preoccupations, Gilla Band, Death Grips, Tyler, The Creator, Pusha T, Ginuwine, Velcro Hooks, Turbowolf, Pulled Apart By Horses, Cold War Kids, LIFE, Death From Above 1979, Foals, The Futureheads, Archie Bronson Outfit, Spring King, Fontaines D.C., Metz, The Walkmen, LICE, SOFT PLAY, A Place To Bury Strangers, Beak, Death In Vegas, Arab Strap, SUUNS, TV On The Radio, Arcade Fire, Radiohead, Spectres, Mogwai, Q Lazzarus, IDLES, Fugazi, DEN, Future Islands, Iggy Pop, Talking Heads, Tears For Fears, The Cure, The National, Einstürzende Neubauten, To Rococo Rot
Having Mercury nominated, platinum selling indie rockers Editors on Lost And Sound might seem somewhat a curveball, but then so to is the band asking Benjamin John Power, aka electronic composer and Ivor Novello winning Blanck Mass to join as a full time member. Round about the time Editors were setting indie dancefloors alight with their mid noughties anthems, Munich and Blood, Benjamin was setting volumes alight as half of drone-rockers Fuck Buttons. It's such an usunual pairing and Paul caught up with Benjamin alongside synth player Elliot Williams to talk about how an epic alt band and an experimentally leaning electronic producer came together on their new album, EBM, about 80s pop and industrial and lots more. This episode is sponsored by Audio-TechnicaPaul's debut book, Coming To Berlin: Global Journeys Into An Electronic Music And Club Culture Capital is out now on Velocity Press. Friend of the pod and very nice chap Benjamin John Power used to make music as part of a duo under the name of Fuck Buttons. However, since 2010 he’s been banging out some solo stuff under the moniker Blanck Mass and boy howdy is it some goooooood shit. In order to dismiss accusations of nepotism, and with Dave away moving house this week, we asked our other good friend of the pod Vicki Henry to pick an album. This was her choice. Naturally we could not decline. Our second ever interview was with Ben, and you can find all three parts of that chat here, here and here. As a result we don’t talk much about influences and such like as he more than covers that in his interview. In this episode we talk about Ben’s career as Blanck Mass, chat a little about his past in Fuck Buttons and then go through each of his albums to decide if his second album Dumb Flesh is indeed the most unsung. What transpires as a delightful conversation about the unsettling, often strange atmosphere in his music, and we also highlight the superb attention to detail in both the production and songwriting across his entire catalogue. Granted, after All Pigs Must Die, this marks two weeks on the bounce where we’ve did intense, malevolent music but hey, it’s our party and we’ll make everyone feel regularly ill at ease if we want to. Is Dumb Flesh worthy of a place in our discography? You decide.
Our first guest on Sound Torque is Andrew Hung. For a good few years, Andrew was one half of psychedelic noise duo Fuck Buttons and has since gone on to record music under his own name as both a songwriter and a soundtrack composer for such films as The Greasy Strangler and An Evening with Beverly Luff Linn. He's also produced some great records for other artists such as Beth Orton and Aimee Osbourne. Episode 8 of This Is Not Happening finds one of the most hotly-anticipated electronic music albums of the last year: Bicep's Isles. Made mostly before lockdown, and held back as music came to terms with the pandemic, Isles comes after their monster self-titled debut in 2017. Guy is at the helm to ask if you can dance to an album with no dancefloors and whether genres matter. In the second part of the show, we follow up covers with our favourite remixes, going right across the board with new and old, and finding out what makes a great remix. We chose: David: Eric B & Rakim - Paid In Full (Seven Minutes of Madness - The Coldcut Remix)Nolan: Freeform Five - No More Conversations (Mylo Remix)Joey: Fuck Buttons - Sweet Love For Planet Earth (Andrew Weatherall Remix)Guy: David Bowie - Lost Is Love (Hello Steve Reich Mix by James Murphy for the DFA)This album of the month and all our music discussions from the past decade or more can be found on our blog at www.thisisnothappening.net, which will run alongside the podcast choices and much, much more. So check them out so to see what we love and what we don't love, and if something catches your eye, we'd love to hear what you think. Episode #9 will be casting our eye over the much-hyped debut album from Arlo Parks: Collapsed In Sunbeams.
Ian F. King is JUST what we needed: the author of Appetite For Definition joins us to get drunk and simple with The Cars, excavate some excellent 90s post-rock and push down the trash in the Fuck Buttons bin.
It’s taken more than a bloody year for us to arrange our second interview, but we did it! We promise not to wait so long for the next one. Promise. This week we sit with producer and musician Benjamin John Power, best known for his work in Fuck Buttons and Blanck Mass. In part 1 we talk early life, early influences, the health of electronic music, broken washing machines and sordid rap-metal pasts. Also, Chris raps. Which is a true feast for the eardrums. Mark is sadly absent from this episode as he’s was ill at the time for recording but don’t worry, you’ll hardly notice that he’s missing.
Well look at that, you made it to the third episode of Falling Forward. This weeks guest is Andrew Hung, an electronic music & score producer who you may know from his band Fuck Buttons or his work with Beth Orton. We discuss the ending of creative relationships, his love of Portishead and his wonderful OSTs for “The Greasy Strangler” and “An Evening with Beverly Luff Linn”.If you're enjoying the show, please consider supporting this podcast over at https://www.patreon.com/danlesac See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

You might be wondering how I made a radio edit of an interview with a band called "Fuck Buttons"... but don't worry! I did it. Like many others, I was really into last year's Blanck Mass record, World Eater (2017, Sacred Bones Records). I was surprised to discover that Blanck Mass is the side project of Benjamin John Power who is also one half of Fuck Buttons. I spent one hot summer night with both members of Fuck Buttons (Andrew Hung and Benjamin John Power) in their tour van. The duo were in good spirits, despite the fact that we were all sweating profusely. Rumor has it that the band is working on new material as I write this. Hopefully we'll see some new Fuck Buttons music soon. How do you say "Fuck Buttons" in a family friendly radio environment? How do you make a great radio edit of a long track? What's it like to "jam" when you are in an electronic act? What's it like to have your music selected to be in the London 2012 Summer Olympic Games? What place does patriotism have in the lives of Fuck Buttons? You'll have to listen to find out. Tracks played on the radio edit of the show... 1) Fuck Buttons "The Red Wing" (radio) edit (12"/download single, ATPR, 2013) 2) Fuck Buttons "Surf Solar" (radio) edit (7?/download single, ATPR, 2009) 3) Fuck Buttons, Slow Focus (2013) "Stalker" (background) 4) Fuck Buttons "Olympians" (radio) edit (12"/download single, ATPR, 2010) 5) Fuck Buttons "Brainfreeze" (radio) edit (12"/download single, ATPR, 2013) NO songs CANCON

Blanck Mass is better known as Benjamin John Power, one half of Fuck Buttons. In 2015, Power was commissioned by the East End Film Festival to curate a rescore for Bruno Forzani and Héléne Catet's film. The original score for The Strange Colour of Your Body's Tears wasn't actually original. Instead, as the University of Wisconsin's Mike King wrote in a blog post for UW's Cinematheque, "much of the soundtrack is directly lifted from the 1970s cinema that inspires them."
Benjamin John Power – one half of Fuck Buttons and the whole of Blanck Mass – discusses skateboards, Michael Jackson and his dark new album 'World Eater'. See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

Shock World Service 053 Obelisk High by Chequerboard 03/10/13 Dublin, Ireland 1. J.R. Alexander – Memories The beautifully produced opening track from an EP released in 2012 by Jerome Alexander of Message to Bears featuring the sounds of the cups & saucers jostling about as patterned percussion. 2. Holden – The Illuminations (Excerpt) A brief tumble through the stars via an excerpt from James Holden's new album 'The Inheritors'. 3. Clark – Soft Eruptor One of five tracks from the Iradelphic sessions sent out to people on Clarks mail out list recently & described as some extra material from his recent release 'Iradelphic', it contained some of my favourite Clark tracks ever. The blurred use of Martina Topley Birds vocals here envelop the guitar beautifully. 4. Recomposed by Max Richter – Autumn 3 (Vivaldi, The Four Seasons) A brief striking piece from Max Richter's interesting Four Seasons recomposition project. 5. Girls Names – Pittura Infamante The key track from the brilliant LP 'New Life' by the Belfast 4 piece. 6. Wax Stag – Fantasy Gay A lovely leisurely piece of electro pop from the 80s referencing synth maestro Robert Lee aka Wax Stag. 7. Tim Hecker – No Drums Ghostly, poignant, hopeful and bleak, this piece from Tim Heckers amazing Ravedeath 1972 album is the audio equivalent of a haunting. 8. Chequerboard – Obelisk A brief track from my new album 'The Unfolding' out now on Lazybird records. http://www.chequerboard.com 9. Christ – One Sunny Cloudy Day A melting glacier of nostalgia under a blanket of surface noise from the elusive Scottish electronic artist Christ. The accompanying video by Stefan Larsson depicting two mysterious figures mirroring the movements of robotic trees in a snowy realm is a masterpiece. 10. Bark Psychosis – All Different Things A beautiful exercise in the extremes of quiet & loud from English shape shifting post rock/musical project Bark Psychosis. 11. Red House Painters – Sundays & Holidays An old tumbling autumnal gem from Red House Painters 1994 Shock Me EP. 12. Ethernet – Current (Loscil Remix) Scott Morgan remixes Ethernet creating a stunningly vast realm of icey tones. Listen out for the distant bombs going off. 13. ilex – ilk Great piece from Dublin based Holly McGowans ilex project recalling Susumu Yokota via Orbital. 14. Colleen – Break Away An interesting vocal montage from Cecile Schotts brilliant new album ' The Weighing Of The Heart. 15. Library Tapes - Sun Peeking Through The beautifully poignant title track from Swede David Wenngren's recent album as Library Tapes. 16. Ametsub - Opening Above the clouds time with this strident gem from little known Tokyo-based Japanese artist Ametsub. 17. Blanck Mass - Sundown Music to watch stars explode to would be a fitting description for the music of Benjamin John Power, one of the founding members of Fuck Buttons. 18. Clark – Guy Fawkes/Night Night A hungry robot bird beckons in an unspooling guitar loop in this intriguing vignette from the Iradelphic Sessions mailout EP. 19. Luigi Boccherini – La Musica Notturna (Excerpt) I couldn't resist finishing on this charming snippit of Boccherini. Playful, charming but hinting at so much more.

Dan and Eric talk about a train crash, horses in McDonald's, Amanda Bynes, Monopoly, ashes, memories, Chromecast, Nexus 7, Surface, Apple, iPad, Logic Pro X, cats, Weird Al, Albuquerque, Breaking Bad, sand art, The Last Exorcism, Trance, The Chase, Dumplings, banks, "all natural" food, and Fuck Buttons.
Festival season has well and truly broken, in my case very much so, as last weekends beer lairiness will testify. Anyway, as my Instagram feed is flooded by images of beer cups with out of focus main stages in the background, I’m going to be keeping it real, on the podcatenspeil. Sorry, that made more sense in my head. This week, I open with Fuck Buttons, close with an oldie from Eddie Harris and the points in between range from psychadelic Merseybeat, West Coast Hot Rod and couple of tracks I pinched from the latest copy of The Fly. I am nothing if not shameless.
