In episode 19 of (Pop) Cultural Marxism, Isi and Ajay are joined by fellow BISR faculty Joseph Earl Thomas to discuss Ghost of Yotei, Sucker Punch Productions' much-anticipated sequel to Ghost of Tsushima. To kick off the episode, Isi and Ajay chat about recent cultural news and highlights, from the Japanese government calling on OpenAI to refrain from using anime and manga as training data, to the #SwiftiesAgainstAI campaign, to Paul Thomas Anderson's One Battle After Another (2025). Turning to Ghost of Yotei, Isi, Ajay, and Joseph consider where the game succeeds (its strong start, visual beauty, sharp soundtrack, and the satisfying chunkiness and texture of its combat scenes) and where it doesn't (its loadout system, simplistic puzzles, dearth of opportunities for stealth mode, and social and political quandaries its narrative and design raise). They explore the films and television shows that influenced Yotei—from Lady Snowblood and Samurai Champloo to the films of Takashi Miike, Akira Kurosawa, and Sergio Leone) and ask whether and where the game successfully incorporates cinematic techniques and conventions into its storyline. Along the way, they discuss the game's dicey depiction of the Ainu and the colonization of Hokkaido, consider whether the pleasure of open-world gaming has diminished or transformed in the years between Yotei and Tsushima, and interrogate the shape of the game's revenge plot.
Erin and Paul review two films about animal-assisted revenge from beyond the grave: Alex Proyas' 1994 mall-goth fave THE CROW, and Kaneto Shindo's eerie 1968 ghost story KURONEKO.
This episode isn't a hoax or a prank, it's just a regular Recommend or Refute episode. Why would we open with that? Well, when John brings Thank You Very Much (2023), a biographical documentary about Andy Kaufman, we feel obligated to emphasize that we aren't trying to fool anyone with the rest of our picks. Sure, Ryan did bring something called Spy x Family: Code White (2024), and that reads like a math problem, but we assure you its very real and so is his take on the feature. Meanwhile, Dixon is keeping it Criterion by telling us about the spirits and curses brought upon samurai by their misdeeds in Kaneto Shindo's Kuroneko (1968). Join us for another fun roundtable discussion and don't forget to submit your own recommend or refutes to us via our social handles or on Discord.Find more info at https://theafterpod.transistor.fm

In this episode, we return to the 1960s to discuss the history of horror and the influential films of the decade but this time we have broadened our scope to include international films - hence the part 2. We will do a mini recap of major historical events of the 1960s and where horror was at with experimental films like Psycho (1960), Peeping Tom (1960) and Blood Feast (1963) shocking audiences leading to the rebirth of zombies with Night of the Living Dead (1968). Then we will leave North America to talk about what horror was doing in countries like Japan, France and Great Britain with the films Kuroneko (1968), Eyes Without a Face (1962) and Horror of Dracula (1958). Enjoy and welcome to our dark side… *Note: We are aware that Horror of Dracula was released in 1958, however, we have included this film in the 1960s as it was a film that signaled the rise of Hammer Horror in the UK in the 1960s leading into the 1970s* Intro/Outro Music: Kiss of the Creature by Dance with the Dead Artwork by: Jess Hrycyk Editing work by: Jessica

It's time for one of those huge episodes. Well, it's a three parter anyways. 1968 was a ground breaking year for horror movies, well, as far as the big hitter films are concerned anyways. Byrd and Matt discuss Daiei's 1962 period monster movie, The Whale God (aka The Killer Whale). Directed by Tokuzo Tanaka (Zatoichi series), with a script written by Kaneto Shindo (Onibaba, Kuroneko) based on the novel by Koichiro Uno, it tells the story of a whaling village in the early Meiji period being terrorized by a gigantic whale. Two men, Shaki (Kojiro Hongo of the Gamera films) and Kishu (Shintaro Katsu of the Zatoichi films) to compete to be the one to kill the whale. For decades, this film was obscure to American audiences, but it just saw its first blu-ray release stateside. We'll give our review, as well as talk about whaling in Japanese culture, the awesome Akira Ifukube score, the themes of forgiveness and obsession, the influence of Moby Dick, and more! But first we have a news roundup with our thoughts on the new Godzilla x Kong trailer, Godzilla Minus One's Oscar nomination, and the passing of suit actor Ken Satsuma. Relax and enjoy the show!
Years after watching the fantastic Onibaba, we once again get an atmospheric horror film from Kaneto Shindo with Kuroneko (1968). Shindo continues to impress with this tale of feline and feminine justice. I just wish we didn't have to wait so long for his next film in the collection.

On today's episode I briefly discuss Kuroneko, a Japanese Horror film from the late 60's.
With Matt on an extended hiatus, Byrd brings in Lux, Tom and Kevin to ring in our annual October horror series of podcasts by talking about Kaneto Shindo's folk-horror classic, Kuroneko! Set in feudal Japan, it tells the story of a mother and her daughter in law who are raped and murdered by a troop of samurai. The two come back as ferocious bakeneko (ghost cat) yokai by making a deal with the underworld to kill all samurai. Things get complicated when the husband/son-in law of the pair returns home as a samurai. Combining atmospheric black and white photography and influences from Japanese theater, Kuroneko has become one of the celebrated horror films of its time. So how does it hold up? Listen and find out!

Anime Was (Not) A Mistake continues Animasterpiece Theater with the second on the bill of Kaneto Shindo's folk horror films. In Kuroneko (1968) malevolent spirits seek revenge and lap up milk in this feline furor. After being wronged by greedy samurai, the age old trope of cats having nine lives comes front and center. What wrongs would you put up with to be with the ones you love, long since thought dead and gone? Be weary when stumbling through the bamboo grove at night, that meowing you may hear may lead you to your doom...
