This week friend of the pod Benjamin Power, otherwise known as Blanck Mass, joins us to discuss a record he loves by a band he loves - Broken Ear Record by Black Dice. In this episode we get to grips with the difference between avant-garde and experimental music, ponder what music actually is, and do our best to understand the weird, puzzling world of Black Dice. Strap in. It's gonna get mental.

Having Mercury nominated, platinum selling indie rockers Editors on Lost And Sound might seem somewhat a curveball, but then so to is the band asking Benjamin John Power, aka electronic composer and Ivor Novello winning Blanck Mass to join as a full time member. Round about the time Editors were setting indie dancefloors alight with their mid noughties anthems, Munich and Blood, Benjamin was setting volumes alight as half of drone-rockers Fuck Buttons. It's such an usunual pairing and Paul caught up with Benjamin alongside synth player Elliot Williams to talk about how an epic alt band and an experimentally leaning electronic producer came together on their new album, EBM, about 80s pop and industrial and lots more. In between composer interviews, The Film Scorer covers some of the best, most notable, and favorite film scores from January through March, 2022. These include a handful of films released in 2021 whose scores for some reason had delayed releases, like The Harder They Fall by Jeymes Samuel and Benedetta by Anne Dudley, as well as experimental scores like The Seed by Lucrecia Dalt, Texas Chainsaw Massacre by Colin Stetson, and Ted K by Blanck Mass (the latter of whom I recently interviewed), and a whole load more! Keep your eye on The Film Scorer website for reviews and articles covering some of these scores and see below for articles covering some of my favorite scores for the following months, including detailed writeups and lists: January: https://thefilmscorer.com/the-best-film-scores-of-january-2022/
Experimental electronic musician turned film composer Benjamin John Power (aka Blanck Mass) joins The Film Scorer Podcast! We initially set out to talk about his score for Ted K, which mixes gentle, ambient textures and pounding melodies to get into the head of domestic terrorist Ted Kaczynski. However, we take a detour and first talk about his other new score (which, as of recording, hadn't released) for Gazza, which covers the troubled life of British footballer Paul Gascoigne (aka Gazza). Blanck Mass also talks about how hearing Ennio Morricone's score to The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly at six years old inspired him to score for film, his long journey to finally having that opportunity (the Irish crime drama Calm with Horses), and the new scoring challenges he hopes to one day face. Ted K is available to watch digitally in the US (but is forthcoming in the UK) while Gazza is available via BBC iPlayer (but is forthcoming in the US). Blanck Mass's score for Ted K (though not Gazza), and almost all of his other music, is available digitally, particularly on BandCamp.
Blanck Mass is one of the great makers of electronic music. His scope has widened with his entrance into film composing and his penetrating new score for TED K proves that his Ivor Novello award winning debut effort for 2020's Calm With Horses was no fluke. On this episode, Blanck Mass talks about his new direction in composition, and the isolated journey of crafting music for a Ted Kaczynski biopic.
The FADER's Jordan Darville talks to Blanck Mass about how pandemic isolation informed his score for Tony Snow's Ted K, the necessary sensitivity for making a film about a real-life monster, and his favorite film composers. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Friend of the pod and very nice chap Benjamin John Power used to make music as part of a duo under the name of Fuck Buttons. However, since 2010 he’s been banging out some solo stuff under the moniker Blanck Mass and boy howdy is it some goooooood shit. In order to dismiss accusations of nepotism, and with Dave away moving house this week, we asked our other good friend of the pod Vicki Henry to pick an album. This was her choice. Naturally we could not decline. Our second ever interview was with Ben, and you can find all three parts of that chat here, here and here. As a result we don’t talk much about influences and such like as he more than covers that in his interview. In this episode we talk about Ben’s career as Blanck Mass, chat a little about his past in Fuck Buttons and then go through each of his albums to decide if his second album Dumb Flesh is indeed the most unsung. What transpires as a delightful conversation about the unsettling, often strange atmosphere in his music, and we also highlight the superb attention to detail in both the production and songwriting across his entire catalogue. Granted, after All Pigs Must Die, this marks two weeks on the bounce where we’ve did intense, malevolent music but hey, it’s our party and we’ll make everyone feel regularly ill at ease if we want to. Is Dumb Flesh worthy of a place in our discography? You decide.

'Shadow in the Cloud' composer Mahuia Bridgman-Cooper is the guest. Plus, Canadian electronic artist Mecha Maiko joins for a new, probably regular segment. Also featuring new music by Blanck Mass, Desire, and Hannah Peel, along with some gems from SOPHIE (RIP) and Marcos Valle & Azymuth.
Welcome back to the global indie tour! We have two songs from the Sleaford Mods in our list this week, as both Mark and Brendan are big fans of this Nottingham duo. We also have a new electronic cut from Edinburgh's Blanck Mass, plus a remix of Kyoto artist Cuushe being remixed by Moscow's Kate NV. Next, some buttoned-up indie from Toronto's The Weather Station, and an archive track from avant-pop titans Stereolab. Enjoy!

'Atmospheric' goes some way to describing a lot of the music on the show this week. From the sublime new opus from Mexico's Murcof to the stunning cello experimentation of Simon McCorry, we have sounds that transport you to a range of different intoxicating realms. Elsewhere there's some experimental panpipe music from Bristol's Avon Terror Corps and chopped cowbells from Colombia's LeinaD, Birmingham electronic-inspired new records from Ashley Paul and Beautify Junkyards, SOPHIE's 'no remixes... except for Autechre' prophecy coming true, and a whole lot more. Tracklisting Sintakon - Muevete (Avon Terror Corps, UK) Blanck Mass - Starstuff (single edit) (Sacred Bones Records, USA) Ashley Paul - Blue Skies Green Trees (Slip, UK) MANDEL - Mini Suite I (Bedroom Community, Iceland) Murcof - Underwater Lament (The Leaf Label, UK) Beautify Junkyards - Reverie (feat. Christmas is a time for cheer, and a time to eat, drink and be merry with family. For a lot of folk, some of these things may not be possible this year, which is why we felt even more duty bound to continue our very own festive tradition of getting really bloody silly at the end of the year. For the first since March, we decided to get in a room together and stare in lovingly into each other’s eyes to record this mega three parter. In the weeks leading up to this, we asked people to submit questions, ridiculous or otherwise, to us so we could turn this self serving nonsense into something for you lot. The results were…really messy. We also asked some of our previous guests to contribute too, so you’ll get to hear from co-hosts Anna Goldthorp and Vicki Henry, as well as from Ben Power of Blanck Mass, Jonah Matranga and of course, the most knowledgeable musical mind we know, Ferrucio Quercetti. In part one we answer a handful of these questions and have some of these co-hosts chip in. We start to get drunk and honestly, it’s a real fun time. Part two will drop next week where, as luck would have it, we address a bunch of questions about what Brexit will hold for touring bands going forward. Prescient stuff.

It's a very special episode for score lovers this week, as Edith is joined by Geoff Barrow and Redg Weeks from Invada Records. With its impeccable roster of composers, Invada's back catalogue has featured more times on our podcast than we can count. Among the artists they've worked with who we've spoken to - Cliff Martinez, Mica Levi, Blanck Mass, Warren Ellis and, of course, Clint Mansell. They've also been incredibly supportive of what we do, so it really was a treat chatting with them both remotely. In addition to his celebrated band work, Geoff collaborates with another former guest on this show, Ben Salisbury, on film and TV scores. And he's teamed up with Ben and Bristol outfit The Insects for his most recent project, Alex Garland's mind-bending tech-noir series, Devs. As always, there's plenty of music to enjoy.
Another of our "check out some new (ish) music" bonus tracks, this time highlighting Cheekface and Blanck Mass. We have two guests for you on this latest episode of Soundtracking in the shape of director Nick Rowland and musician Benjamin Power - aka Blanck Mass. The pair have collaborated on Nick's debut feature, Calm With Horses, a visceral crime drama set in the wild west of Ireland starring Cosmo Jarvis (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cosmo_Jarvis) and Barry Keoghan (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Barry_Keoghan) . It is a remarkably accomplished piece of film making, which also marks Ben's first extended foray into the world of scoring. As an album, it very much stands up in its own right too.
Live online Radio Show for Radio Dark Tunnel in February 12th 2020. In this show I played Chambre Rouge by Viot, You Are Not Your Body (Moris Black Remix) by Pete Crane, Nuklear Blood by Souldz and Ulisess, Houve vs House by Blanck Mass, ConnectiveDeath by Misfit Trauma Queen, Post-Love by White Night Ghosts, AOV by Andi and Lies (Poison Point Remix) by Sydney Valette. Lastly I replayed Chambre Rouge by Viot as it has been cut from the Youtube stream in the beginning.
Although this episode isn't as funny as last week's discussion of "lay-down Sally," it does get into some of Brian's neuroses about his forthcoming book, which is entertaining. They talk a lot about Skomsvold's humor, about the creepy ways in which various photographers and interviewers treat her as a young female artist, and the bit where John O'Brien of Dalkey Archive Press makes an appearance. Focusing on aftermath of the publication of her novel The Faster I Walk, the Smaller I Am, "East of the River" is one of the most compelling sections of Monsterhuman and can be read on it's own. Even if you haven't read it, you'll definitely enjoy this podcast. Only three episodes left! And because Chad's going to be in London for a week, we'll be broadcasting two episodes on YouTube next week. (The audio podcasts will release as usual on Thursday 9/12 and 9/19.) That said, here are links to the final three YouTube streams: Monday, September 9 (pgs 316-360), Thursday, September 12 (pgs 360-406), and then back to normal, with the final episode on Wednesday, September 25 (pgs 407-448). Also, all of our past episodes are available on our YouTube channel in case you want to catch up on anything. This week's music is "House vs. House" by Blanck Mass. Season 10 will be the first English-language title to be included, Ducks, Newburyport by Lucy Ellmann, which was just named to the Booker SHORTLIST!! Follow Open Letter, Chad Post, and Brian Wood for random thoughts and information about upcoming guests. And be sure to preorder Brian's book, Joytime Killbox, which is coming out this fall from BOA Editions. You can find all the Two Month Review posts by clicking here. And now, for avid fans, we present part 3 of our interview with Benjamin Power/Blanck Mass. After two weeks of talking about Blanck Mass and Ben’s career, it’s now time to talk about music that Ben thinks is underrated. There’s some great, obscure, interesting choices and discussion in this episode around the album’s he’s picked, why he’s picked them and what he loves about them. We also recommend checking out episodes 1 and 2 on the links below. Part 1: https://www.unsungpod.net/episodes/in-session-2-ben-power-of-blanck-mass-part-1 Part 2: https://www.unsungpod.net/episodes/in-session-2-ben-power-of-blanck-mass-part-2
As is tradition for our interviews, we’ve broken it into three parts and this is no exception. On part two Ben talks about the genesis of Blanck Mass, the method behind some of the music and the boys go on a deep dive of the Blanck Mass back catalogue, taking in as much ground as they can. Ben talks about some of the stuff he says is his favourite and things that encapsulate what Blanck Mass really is. They also touch on some of the collaborations Ben’s been a part of and so much more. Mark is again sadly absent from this episode as he’s was ill. But you’ll never even notice. Part one can be found here: https://www.unsungpod.net/episodes/in-session-2-ben-power-of-blanck-mass-part-1
It’s taken more than a bloody year for us to arrange our second interview, but we did it! We promise not to wait so long for the next one. Promise. This week we sit with producer and musician Benjamin John Power, best known for his work in Fuck Buttons and Blanck Mass. In part 1 we talk early life, early influences, the health of electronic music, broken washing machines and sordid rap-metal pasts. Also, Chris raps. Which is a true feast for the eardrums. Mark is sadly absent from this episode as he’s was ill at the time for recording but don’t worry, you’ll hardly notice that he’s missing.

You might be wondering how I made a radio edit of an interview with a band called "Fuck Buttons"... but don't worry! I did it. Like many others, I was really into last year's Blanck Mass record, World Eater (2017, Sacred Bones Records). I was surprised to discover that Blanck Mass is the side project of Benjamin John Power who is also one half of Fuck Buttons. I spent one hot summer night with both members of Fuck Buttons (Andrew Hung and Benjamin John Power) in their tour van. The duo were in good spirits, despite the fact that we were all sweating profusely. Rumor has it that the band is working on new material as I write this. Hopefully we'll see some new Fuck Buttons music soon. How do you say "Fuck Buttons" in a family friendly radio environment? How do you make a great radio edit of a long track? What's it like to "jam" when you are in an electronic act? What's it like to have your music selected to be in the London 2012 Summer Olympic Games? What place does patriotism have in the lives of Fuck Buttons? You'll have to listen to find out. Tracks played on the radio edit of the show... 1) Fuck Buttons "The Red Wing" (radio) edit (12"/download single, ATPR, 2013) 2) Fuck Buttons "Surf Solar" (radio) edit (7?/download single, ATPR, 2009) 3) Fuck Buttons, Slow Focus (2013) "Stalker" (background) 4) Fuck Buttons "Olympians" (radio) edit (12"/download single, ATPR, 2010) 5) Fuck Buttons "Brainfreeze" (radio) edit (12"/download single, ATPR, 2013) NO songs CANCON

This week on Talking to Ghosts Michael talks to Blanck Mass before his Portland show! We talked about field recording and sample manipulation, touring with the new show, and creating an album that reflects the spaces that you are in. We also have a great review of the Blanck Mass show from our good friends at I Die: You Die. Definitely check out their podcast: We Have a Technical. You can find Talking to Ghosts on our official website, Facebook, or Twitter!
In this week's podcast, we're speaking with Lynette Cerezo, the creative force behind the cacophonic maelstrom that is Bestial Mouths! Lynette had plenty to say about her vision for the project through all of its permutations, the contrasts in new dark music in North America and Europe, and the personal roots of the macabre themes explored in Bestial Mouths' work. We're also chatting about the glut of new records rushing in during 2017's last quarter, Blanck Mass, and the sticky issue of ethical promotion of one's music. All this week on We Have a Technical, the official I Die: You Die podcast!

Suenan: LCD Soundsystem: 45:33 (Pt. 2) girlpool: Static Somewhere Actress: FANTASYNTH Forest Swords: The Highest Flood Artificial Brain: Estanged from Orbit Kelly Lee Owens: Anxi (feat. Jenny Hval) Pharmakon: Transmission Jlin: Holy Child Perfume Genius: Run Me Through Colin Stetson: The Lure of the Mine

Blanck Mass is better known as Benjamin John Power, one half of Fuck Buttons. In 2015, Power was commissioned by the East End Film Festival to curate a rescore for Bruno Forzani and Héléne Catet's film. The original score for The Strange Colour of Your Body's Tears wasn't actually original. Instead, as the University of Wisconsin's Mike King wrote in a blog post for UW's Cinematheque, "much of the soundtrack is directly lifted from the 1970s cinema that inspires them."
Season 2.5, Episode 9. Just when you thought we'd done the gamut of acts at Safe As Milk Festival 2017, they go and announce another 17 acts! John, Mike, Matt and Gordon reconvene to start anew, this week discussing FOUR (not the usual three) artists, in the shape of Asiq Nargile, Basic House, Basic Rhythm, and Blanck Mass. Also this week, the Peanut Butter Milk Stout Gang is formed, Mike invents a potentially disgusting way to greet a friend, and Gordon tries to convince everyone else of the existence of a hitherto-unknown bit of local vernacular. Also, listen out for the inaugural use of the word "borkhole". Don't forget to hit us up on twitter at http://twitter.com/ayppodcast, and check out Mike's listening notes at http://ayppodcast.tumblr.com #Podcast #Music #Review #SafeAsMilk #AsiqNargile #BasicHouse #BasicRhythm #BlanckMass #Fisties #ADogInTheMouth #HeckinDoggoes
