Noah Baumbach's latest Netflix venture - Jay Kelly - hits limited release in cinemas in just a few weeks. I had the pleasure of seeing it at the BFI London Film Festival a few weeks back and have been eagerly awaiting the opportunity to talk about it in a full-length review. The reactions to this movie have been pretty mixed since its premiere at the Venice Film Festival. Why anyone at Netflix thought a European premiere made sense for a movie about an aging Hollywood movie star is beyond me… but here we are. Since that premiere, the reviews for this movie have grown to be much more kind. I've been really long forward to Jay Kelly because Noah Baumbach's films tend to work for me and the premise, as well as as the opportunity for Adam Sandler to be on a serious movie again, had me very excited. So, am I one of the people really high on Jay Kelly, or was the initial mixed reception warranted? Find out in this review! Jay Kelly hits Netflix on December 5th.Jay Kelly:Directed by: Noah BaumbachWritten by: Noah Baumbach, Emily MortimerProduced by: Noah Baumbach, David Heyman, Amy PascalExecutive Producer: Donald SabourinMusic by: Nicholas BritellDirector of Photography: Linus SandgrenEdited by: Valerio Bonelli, Rachel DuranceCasting by: Douglas Aibel, Nina GoldProduction Design by: Mark TildesleyCast: George Clooney, Adam Sandler, Laura Dern, Billy Crudup, Riley Keough, Grace Edwards, Stacy KeachSynopsis: Famous movie actor Jay Kelly embarks on a journey of self discovery confronting both his past and present, accompanied by his devoted manager Ron.

Hamnet (2025) - MOVIE REVIEW

Well, here we are. Chloe Zhao's Hamnet - one of the most critically acclaimed movies of the year - premiered at the BFI London Film Festival two weeks ago. Since it's premiere at Telluride back in late August, this movie has been billed as a locked-in OSCAR contender and potentially one of the biggest threats to WIN Best Picture. Reviews like that always get on my nerves because it's classic film festival overhype. You watch a movie surrounded by all the cast & crew and thousands of like-minded movie fans and, inevitably, the hype is going to be through the roof. All that being said, I watched this movie at a film festival as well... so I'll be telling you all today whether the hype was real. I've been a little nervous going into Hamnet because, while the trailers have excited me and the reviews were certainly promising, I am neither a Chloe Zhao guy or a Shakespeare guy. Zhao's movies have always felt cold to me and I truly believe that Nomadland is probably one of the worst Best Picture winners.... of all-time! But, I'm happy to report that Hamnet is the first time that I've truly been able to connect with one of her movies. Find out why in this review!Hmanet:Directed by: Chloé ZhaoScreenplay by: Chloé Zhao, Maggie O'FarrellBased on the novel "Hamnet" by Maggie O'FarrellProduced by: Liza Marshall, p.g.a., Pippa Harris, p.g.a, Nicolas Gonda, p.g.a., Steven Spielberg, p.g.a., Sam Mendes, p.g.a.Executive Producers: Laurie Borg, Kristie Macosko Krieger, Chloé ZhaoMusic by: Max RichterDirector of Photography: Lukasz ZalEdited by: Alfonso Gonçalves, Chloé ZhaoCasting by: Nina GoldProduction Design by: Fiona CrombieCostume Design by: Malgosia TurzanskaCast: Jessie Buckley, Paul Mescal, Emily Watson, Joe Alwyn, Jacobi Jupe, David Wilmot, Bodhi Rae Breathnach, Olivia Lynes, Freya Hannan-Mills, Noah JupeSynopsis: The powerful story of love and loss that inspired the creation of Shakespeare's timeless masterpiece, Hamlet.

Bobbi Brown is a make-up artist turned entrepreneur who created her now famous eponymous line in 1990. Her fresh-faced approach went against 80s and 90s trends at the time for bright colour and contouring and instead aimed to celebrate and enhance women's natural beauty. She made millions selling her brand to Estée Lauder and has gone on to create a new multimillion brand. On the release of her memoir, she joins Nuala McGovern to talk about her life and work. The family courts are failing to take domestic abuse seriously despite it featuring in nine out of 10 cases, according to a new report. The report reviewed hundreds of cases and found that judges sent children to stay with a potentially unsafe parent in more than half of them. It said safeguarding concerns were often downplayed or ignored in court. Nuala speaks to Nicole Jacobs, domestic abuse commissioner for England and Wales, who instigated this research.A powerful new short film, 22+1, premieres tonight at the BFI London Film Festival during Baby Loss Awareness Week. Written by Pippa Vosper and directed by Pippa Bennett-Warner, it follows Ruby, played by Bennett-Warner, as she loses her baby 22 weeks plus one day into the pregnancy. Drawing on Vosper's personal experience of baby loss and Bennett-Warner's lived experience as a black woman, the film shines a light on the inequalities faced by black women in maternity care. They both join Nuala in the studio.Last week, we looked at what impact the Women's Summer of Sport could have on grassroots participation. Today we look at the economic impact. Can women's sport call itself big business now? Something that many say will be crucial to its continued growth whilst others say it may risk losing its heart that makes different from men's sport. Joining Nuala to discuss is Dr Christina Philippou, associate professor in accounting and sport finance at the University of Portsmouth, and Sam Agini, sports business correspondent at the Financial Times.

For its landmark 200th episode, Girls On Film celebrates with a very special discussion on the future of film criticism and the vital role of diverse voices. The episode begins with heartfelt, celebratory words from listeners, past guests, and colleagues, reflecting on the journey of the podcast since its launch. Host Anna Smith then unveils The Critical Gap, a ground-breaking new survey commissioned by Girls On Film and conducted by Louisa Livingston and her team at Forward Thought. Inspired by the 2018 Annenberg Inclusion Initiative research that sparked the creation of this podcast, this UK-focused study surveyed over 100 critics of all genders, addressing issues of access, diversity and pay. The findings reveal stark inequalities: women film critics earn over 19% less than men—one of the worst gender pay gaps in UK culture. The report also highlights systemic barriers and ongoing challenges faced by underrepresented groups. The full report is now available on the Girls On Film website. To discuss the findings, Anna is joined by two leading voices in film criticism: Jane Crowther, Chair of the Critics' Circle Film Section, and Akua Gyamfi, founder of The British Blacklist. Together, they reflect on the survey, progress made, the spaces still needed for meaningful conversation, and the steps towards a more inclusive future for film criticism. Anna is also joined by Hanna Flint, co-founder of the LFF Critics Support Fund, the crowdfunded initiative offering financial aid to critics from low-income backgrounds so they can attend the BFI London Film Festival. Hey everybody, just a couple of weeks ago, the BFI London FIlm Festival was on and it was my first ever film festival experience. That being said, it was pretty tumultuous, in good way. I attended some screenings as part of LFF on Tour but also within London itself while I was there for a few days. There have also been a few films I've seen since the festival ended that were also part of the lineup so I'll be including those. I had the chance to see 10 films, which I know is a far cry from what some people were able to see, but It was a great introductory year for me and I'm excited to dive even deeper into this game next year. Here's how I rank them from worst to best! Make sure to let me know what your LFF ranking is in the comments! If you didn't attend it, let me know which of these films you've seen! Movies to rank: Anora (2024) Blitz (2024) Emilia Pérez (2024) Nightbitch (2024) Piece By Piece (2024) Queer (2024) Super/Man: The Christopher Reeve Story (2024) The Apprentice (2024) The Wild Robot (2024) We Live in Time (2024)

Our second London Film Festival main episode is here, and it's a bumper edition. Dario is in Falmouth visiting Neil, so it's something of a nostalgic live taping from the place where The Cinematologists started. The first film on the agenda is Alex Ross Perry's Pavements, which is a meta-documentary on a mercurial 90s band, Pavement. Neil, with his music film expertise, gives detailed context to the history and mythology of the band, whose cult status is deliberately explored by Ross Perry. It is another film that plays with multiple forms and perspectives and is also an instructive counterpoint to Soundtrack to a Coup d'etat (which we covered in the previous main show). This episode also features an interview with Australian director Justin Kurzel, who previously made the somewhat underrated version of Macbeth with Michael Fassbender and Marion Cotillard (among an impressive ouvre). His LFF entry this year is a documentary focusing on Australian musician Warren Ellis. The film follows his career but also explores his dedication to a wildlife sanctuary in Sumatra, where rescued trafficked animals are nursed back to health. Dario then discusses the psychological drama Under the Volcano by Polish director Damian Kocur. It tells the story of a middle-class Ukrainian family finishing a holiday in Tenerife just as the war starts. It's another film that keeps the spectre of apocalypse in the background while focusing on the nuances of familial trauma and the ethical decisions they are forced to confront. Finally, Hailey and Ben join us to discuss Elton John: Never Too Late, a look back at the singer-songwriter's huge career in the context of his final concert in North America at Dodger Stadium. In this festival special, Anna Smith island hops across some of the most unique film festivals of the season, taking listeners from Sea Change festival in Scotland's Tiree to the London Film Festival before ending in Mallorca to hear about the upcoming Evolution Mallorca International Film Festival 2024. First, Anna reports from this year's Sea Change Film Festival in the Inner Hebrides. She speaks with filmmaker Jeanie Finlay (Your Fat Friend, Seahorse) and festival-goers like Reclaim The Frame's Melanie Iredale about their time at Scotland's only annual festival dedicated to powering women in film. Next, she heads to the BFI London Film Festival to meet actor Deba Hekmat and writer Helen Simmons, whose film Last Swim has its premiere at this year's festival. This coming of age drama tells the story of Ziba, a young woman who celebrates her A-Level results with friends while grappling with a personal secret. With Anna, Deba discusses the authenticity of the film's dialogue, how it captured Gen Z sensibilities almost perfectly, and how she resonated with the character of Ziba. Helen reflects on working with a translator to capture an authentic Farsi that is spoken by Ziba and her mother in Last Swim, as well as speaking about the lack of representation of driven and intelligent young women in film. Anna also catches up with some friends of the podcast when she is out and about at LFF. Finally, it's off to Spain for a preview of the Evolution Mallorca International Film Festival. Anna sits down with festival director Sandra Lipski to discuss some of her feminist festival highlights. Sandra gives us an insight into the 2024 lineup, including the festival's plan to welcome five time Academy Award-nominee Annette Bening to Mallorca's sunny shores.
