On this week's Talkhouse Podcast, we've got a pair of fantastic music makers who also happen to be… women in music. That's their joke, not mine—you'll hear. It's Johanna Samuels and Madison Cunningham. Though she's from New York, Johanna Samuels' music has always had West Coast vibes—it makes perfect sense that she now calls Los Angeles home. Her latest album, Sorry, Kid, just came out, and it's got an interesting backstory: The songs were written years ago but never finished, and there were false starts making them work this time around. But she found a great collaborator in Jonathan Rado—you'll hear her refer to “Rado” a bunch in this chat—and finally broke through to a stunning set of mellow, downcast songs. You'll hear the influence of Aimee Mann, Tom Petty, Elliott Smith—if those are your thing, give it a close listen.  The other half of today's conversation, Madison Cunningham, plays a little bit on Samuels' record. The two are old friends, and you may have heard Cunningham in a variety of disparate places over the years: She played with Andrew Bird, and the two covered the lone Buckingham-Nicks album together. She's toured with big names, including Harry Styles. Her 2022 album, Revealer, won the Grammy for Best Folk Album. Cunningham's third album, Ace, was released late last year, and it's a winning left turn—less guitar, more piano, a little weirder than ever before.  Po kolejnej porażce Iga Świątek pojawiają się coraz głośniejsze pytania o jej dyspozycję i stan mentalny. W rozmowie na antenie Radia Wnet padły mocne słowa o „braku radości gry”, uproszczeniu stylu i ogromnej presji, która może odbijać się na kortowych decyzjach liderki światowego tenisa. 

Gleznotājs Kaspars Zariņš uz sarunu aicinājis tēlnieku pāri Olgu Šilovu un Gļebu Panteļejevu, jo  12. jūnijā mākslas stacijā "Dubulti" tika atklāta Gļeba Panteļejeva jaundarbu izstāde "Monumenti", bet Olga Šilova šobrīd strādā pie izstādes "Virsmas spraigums", kas no 27. augusta būs apskatāma galerijā "Māksla XO". Tēlnieki Olga Šilova un Gļebs Panteļejevs ir viens no pazīstamākajiem radošajiem pāriem Latvijas mākslā. Viņu darbi sastopami gan publiskajā telpā, gan muzejos un privātkolekcijās, savukārt ikdienā abi ne tikai rada mākslu, bet arī pasniedz Latvijas Mākslas akadēmijā. Sarunā abi atklāj, kā iepazinās, kā sadzīvo konkurences apstākļos un kāpēc radošajā procesā alkohols nepalīdz. Liktenīgā satikšanās Mākslas akadēmijā Olga Šilova atceras, ka pirmoreiz Gļebu Panteļejevu satikusi, stājoties Latvijas Mākslas akadēmijā 17 gadu vecumā. Viņu pārsteigusi topošā tēlnieka pārliecība un prasmes. "Es viņam jautāju, kā viņš tik labi iemācījies zīmēt un veidot. Gļebs atbildēja: "Vajag daudz strādāt! " Toreiz nenoticēju – domāju, ka viņš kaut ko slēpj," smejoties atceras Olga Šilova. Pēc vairākiem gadiem, armijas dienesta un atkārtotas satikšanās akadēmijā, abi kļuva par pāri. Kopš studiju laikiem viņi strādā līdzās vienā darbnīcā. Idejas tiek slēptas līdz pēdējam brīdim Lai gan abi ir dzīvesbiedri, profesionālajā jomā viņi sevi sauc par konkurentiem. Piedaloties vienos un tajos pašos konkursos, mākslinieki apzināti izvairās apspriest savas ieceres. Pirmās nedēļas idejas tiek turētas noslēpumā, lai neietekmētu vienam otra domāšanu. "Kad ideja vēl tikai briest, mēs par konkrēto konkursu vispār nerunājam. Katrs vārās savā sulā," stāsta Olga Šilova. Savukārt Gļebs Panteļejevs uzsver, ka konkurence mākslā ir daudz plašāka par attiecībām ģimenē: "Faktiski mēs visi esam konkurenti. Mēs pat ar aizgājušajiem konkurējam!" Monumenti ietekmē cilvēku masas Gļebs Panteļejevs atzīst, ka tieši darbs pie publiskajiem objektiem un monumentiem devis sajūtu par profesijas nozīmīgumu: "Monumenti ietekmē cilvēku masas. Tā ir ļoti liela atbildība." Tikmēr Olga Šilova norāda, ka viņas profesionālajā biogrāfijā vairāk bijuši objekti un vides darbi, nevis tradicionāli pieminekļi. Abi piekrīt, ka publiskajā telpā izvietota skulptūra vienmēr kļūst par sabiedrības vērtējuma objektu. Radošais process un alkohols nav savienojami Runājot par darba ikdienu, abi tēlnieki ir vienisprātis – nopietns radošais darbs un alkohols nav savienojami. "Ja ir aktīvā radošā fāze, nekādā gadījumā to nevar savienot ar alkoholu!" uzsver Gļebs Panteļejevs. Savukārt Olga Šilova piebilst, ka izņēmums var būt mehāniski, meditatīvi darbi, kuros nav nepieciešama radoša koncentrēšanās. Māksla sākas ar spēju ieraudzīt Gļebs Panteļejevs neslēpj, ka idejas bieži rodas nevis pie rasējamā galda, bet nejaušos novērojumos. Viens no jaunākajiem darbiem tapis pēc tam, kad viņš studentu auditorijā uz galda pamanījis saburzītu konfektes papīrīti: "Es tajā ieraudzīju karavīru grupu ar karogu. No šī iespaida vēlāk radās bronzas darbs." Abi mākslinieki uzskata, ka radošuma pamatā ir spēja saglabāt atvērtu skatienu uz pasauli un nepazaudēt uztveres asumu. Kara sākums aptura radošumu Īpaši smags periods Gļebam Panteļejevam bijis pēc Krievijas pilna mēroga iebrukuma Ukrainā 2022. gada februārī: "Es vienkārši pārtraucu darbu. Nevarēju saprast, kā vispār tajā laikā var strādāt. Aptuveni trīs mēnešus man nebija nekādas vēlmes radīt." Darbam viņu atkal pievērsis draugs, kurš mudinājis neatmest iesāktās ieceres un turpināt darboties. Mākslinieks strādā plūsmā Abi tēlnieki piekrīt, ka profesionālam māksliniekam nav atsevišķu darbu – ir nepārtraukta plūsma, kurā viens darbs izriet no iepriekšējā. "Mākslinieka darbi ir kā ķēdes posmi. Svarīgi ir nepārtraukt šo ķēdi," saka Gļebs Panteļejevs. Tikām Olga Šilova uzskata, ka mākslas process ir kaut kas lielāks par pašu autoru: "Man liekas, ka es radu procesam. Mākslas process ir kaut kas tāds, ko no mums grib Dievs." Novēlējums radošajiem cilvēkiem Sarunas noslēgumā mākslinieki dalās ar padomu jaunajiem radošajiem cilvēkiem. Gļebs Panteļejevs aicina nepazaudēt spēju vērīgi vērot pasauli un ieraudzīt tajā neparasto: "Visu laiku jāasina sava pasaules uztveres antena." No 12. līdz 14. jūnijam Latvijas Nacionālā mākslas muzeja galvenās ēkas Lielajā zālē pirmo un vienīgo reizi būs skatāma multimediāla instalācija “Saulrieta stunda”, kas apvieno Annas Heinrihsones, MAREUNROL'S, Reiņa Sējāna un Jāņa Šipkēvica radošās prakses vienotā telpiskā pieredzē. Kultūras rondo par gaidāmo mākslas notikumu stāsta kuratore Auguste Petre un Rolands Pēterkops (MAREUNROL'S). “Saulrieta stunda” iezīmē pārejas stāvokli – brīdi starp dienas noslēgumu un nākamā cēliena sākumu. Tā ir robežzona, kurā ierastā telpas uztvere mainās: formas kļūst nenoteiktākas, gaisma pieklust, bet uzmanība saasinās. Saulriets instalācijā kļūst par metaforu pasaules trauslumam un tās nepārtrauktajai kustībai, vienlaikus pievēršoties jautājumam – ko nozīmē būt klātesošam pārejas brīdī? Ekspozīcija dekonstruētā veidā savieno visu iesaistīto autoru radošās valodas, veidojot nevis lineāru naratīvu, bet uztveres lauku, kurā skatītājs aicināts pārvietoties starp klātbūtni un atsvešinājumu, troksni un klusumu, autentisko un simulēto. Anna Heinrihsone telpā ienes meža motīvu – vienlaikus kā atspulgu un dziļuma konstrukciju. Savukārt MAREUNROL'S lielformāta skulptūras turpina mākslinieku praksē būtisko interesi par cilvēka attiecībām ar apkārtējo vidi, identitātes konstrukcijām un vizuālās uztveres nestabilitāti. Ekspozīcijā iekļauts arī video darbs “Mežs”, kas pirmoreiz tika izrādīts izstādē “Fieldwork: Invisible Exercises” (Rīgas mākslas telpa, 2023). Skaņas ainavu veido Reinis Sējāns un Jānis Šipkēvics, radot telpā vibrāciju starp trauksmi un meditāciju.

Rado Štefanov je režisérom Milujem Slovensko už od úplného začiatku a stojí za množstvom veľkých televíznych projektov. Začínal pri Big Brother, skúsenosti zbieral aj pri náročnom Hotel Paradise a dokonca vymyslel názov pre formát Mama, ožeň ma. Dnes spolu s Andym Krausom pracuje aj na novom seriáli. Zināmākais no programmā iekļautajiem komponistiem ir venēcietis Antonio Vivaldi, par kura kompozīciju "Nakts" un tās iespējamo saistību ar šausmu žanru, kā arī citiem skaņražiem, viņu opusiem un dažādiem interesantiem faktiem vēsta sagatavotie stāstījumi. Radoši un emocionāli jaudīgi šo baroka mūzikas partitūru lasījumi ir viens no aspektiem, ko vērts dzirdēt. LINDA LIGHTON is an artist and activist living and working in Kansas City, Missouri. She is a passionate advocate for the arts both regionally, nationally and internationally, and she is committed to being creatively prolific and politically engaged on a daily basis. Lighton has had more than 80 solo shows and has participated in more than 230 group exhibitions at museums and galleries in the United States, Europe, the Middle East and Asia. Linda Lighton's work is in national and international collections in China, France, Germany, Hungary, Israel, Japan, Korea, Latvia, Lithuania, Spain, Switzerland, Taiwan and Turkey as well as The Nelson Atkins Museum of Art, Kansas City, MO; Kemper Museum of Contemporary Art, Kansas City, MO; Spencer Museum of Art, Lawrence, KS; Ariana Museum, Geneva, Switzerland; Fule International Ceramic Museum, Fuping, China, the Yingee Museum in Taiwan, and Icheon International Ceramic Museum, Icheon, Korea. Linda Lighton is a member of the International Academy of Ceramics. She is the founder and director of the Lighton International Artists Exchange Program, which has sent over 207 artists to 59 countries and the Arctic Circle. In 2008, she was chosen for the Missouri Arts Award, and in 2011 she received the Award for Excellence in the Visual Arts and Education from the Kansas City Art Institute, where she graduated with honors in 1989. Recently, Lighton completed two large commissions. The first, a 1% for the Arts program, involved producing a twenty-foot-long mural titled "Ode to the Tallgrass Prairie" for the new Kansas City International Airport. The second was a large chandelier titled "Luminous," installed in the Grand Salon at the Kansas City Museum. Lighton is a fervent arts advocate and activist. She has worked on many boards in her community; helping to instigate the One Percent for Arts Program in Kansas City, and serving on numerous boards over the years: Young Audiences of Kansas City, Friends of Art, Nelson Atkins Museum, Review Magazine, Kansas City Ballet, and National Council for the Education of the Ceramic Arts, Kansas City Jewish Museum Board. His creative journey spans painting, piano, music composition, stand up comedy and theatre. As a member of the comedy group “Bartalk” in the 80's and 90's he had to opportunity to work with such people as Robin Williams, Whoopi Goldberg, Dana Carvey, Bobcat Goldthwaite, Kevin Pollak, Mark Pitta and many others. Bartalk performed in famous comedy clubs such as The Punchline, The Boarding House, The Holy City Zoo, Cobbs Comedy Pub and Tommy T's. In theatre, Jeff has acted in and directed well over a 100 plays and musicals and in the 90's was artistic director and founder of the New Earth Theatre, the San Leandro Community Theatre (now San Leandro Players) and the San Leandro Shakespeare Festival in the San Francisco Bay Area. These theatre groups were used as a vehicle to raise money for the San Leandro Public Library foundation and through the years raised well off 100K dollars. Jeff's original show “The Angel of the Gutter” was performed off-Broadway in New York in 2000 at the Creative Place Theatre. He recently directed “Bullshot Crummond” at The Roaring 20 Gallery and Event space in Westport. Jeff is also an avid pianist and composer and has written the score to George Bernard Shaw's “Androcles and the Lion”. Now based in Kansas City, painting remains his deepest passion and has been a constant in his life since his youth. He is the Artist in Residence at the newly opened “Elevator” in North Kansas City. He is currently showing at 80 Santa Fe Gallery in Overland Park as part of their “Color” exhibit. “Color” runs through March 15, 2026. He will be featured at Mod Gallery in Kansas City in September and has a solo exhibition at Elevator, currently in the works slated for a May/June showing (dates haven't been finalized as of this writing). Reporterzy stojąc po kostki w śniegu donosili radośnie sensacyjnym tonem o Argamedonie. Radośnie bo było o czym mówić, a nie tylko o porwaniach prezydentów czy Ziobrze. Kierowcy co prawda narzekają, ale nikt im nie kazał kupować samochodów. To były indywidualne decyzje. Spora sensacja w sumie, że w styczniu tyle śniegu napadało i chwycił spory mróz. Bardziej czekalibyśmy w styczniu na listki na drzewach i kwiatuszki Co se będziemy żałować z listkami tak malowniczo wyrastających z łodyżek. Starsi z nas mówią: a taka zima, dawniej to były zimy. Śniegi to były śniegi, a mrozy były mrozami. Pamiętam taką zimę, że było tak zimno, że mróz pukał do drzwi i prosił, żeby go wpuścić, bo chce się ogrzać. Jak za szkołą paliliśmy papierosy, to dym zamarzał...

The idea of the breakbeat was born in the Bronx, but its evolution since then has been a transatlantic dialogue, a rhythmic exchange between continents that never really settled. In London, this language found its most elastic form, bending through jungle, drum & bass, and techno, mutating with each new generation of producers. The city remains a living organism, constantly reshaping itself through DJs, club nights, and collectives that resist repetition. Unknown Species, a London-based platform and event series that blends music and environmental awareness in support of endangered species, has carved out a corner for artists to explore that freedom. Its founder, Rado, better known as Naturalisten, is the musical mind behind this week's edition of Delayed with. This mix was recorded almost a year ago at Espacio Perpendicular in Madrid, during the first collaborative event between Unknown Species and the Perpen crew, alongside Delayed friends F-on, Fran Campos, Lynne, DB1, Felix K, Muted, Vrika, and Pillen. It's a space where rhythm meets reflection, and Naturalisten rises fully to the occasion. The first half builds tension through shifting grooves and subtle rhythmic displacements, a controlled energy that feels alive and restless. As the set unfolds, the edges blur. Synths stretch into stranger territories, textures become unmoored, and the intensity softens into something beautifully off-kilter, a reminder that unpredictability can be its own kind of balance. After spending years in Nashville's music industry, he shifted his focus to painting in 2014, finding in visual art a more honest and immediate form of emotional expression.His signature works are often painted on red velvet and feature somber color palettes, bold gestures, and layered textures that invite deep introspection. Rado intentionally chooses materials that challenge artistic conventions, using them to confront ideas about value, imperfection, and personal truth. He views the creative process as a dialogue with emotion, allowing his work to emerge from a space of vulnerability rather than control. In addition to his studio practice, Rado is the founder and curator of Rock Wall Gallery, a space dedicated to showcasing raw and emotionally resonant art. He also leads therapeutic workshops that blend creative expression with ontological coaching, guiding others toward self-awareness and healing through the act of making. Living with Tourette's Syndrome, he openly shares how the condition influences his perspective, embracing it as an essential part of his identity and artistic voice.
