SportsDay Insiders Kevin Sherrington, Evan Grant and Joe Hoyt try [00:19] to put the Cowboys' win over the Jets into perspective. On one hand, it was the Jets, a truly bad team. On the other, Chicago isn't great, either, and the Bears walked all over the Cowboys. Only a couple weeks after saying they'd be lucky to win five games, Joe now says his glass is “half-full,” if only because the offense is so good and the defense couldn't be any worse than it was the first three games. Kevin and Evan discuss [25:30] what difference Skip Schumaker can make and rank the biggest needs. (Hint: It's not pitching). And [51:35] if the Sooners' John Mateer really is back for Texas-OU, the Longhorns could have a long afternoon at the Cotton Bowl. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit podcastchoices.com/adchoices

Calvin says it won't matter how well Dak Prescott plays if the defense doesn't improve, and he doesn't see that coming. [23:29] Kevin and Evan analyze Bruce Bochy's departure from the Rangers, his culpability in their two-year funk and what Chris Young does next, after he officially names Skip Schumaker manager. [46:18] And the guys consider whether Rhett Lashlee would be smart to leave SMU for Arkansas, his alma mater. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit podcastchoices.com/adchoices

SportsDay Insiders Kevin Sherrington, Evan Grant and Calvin Watkins discuss [2:30] the Cowboys' OT win over the Giants. Dak Prescott's resolve to run this year after the Cowboys put him on a leash last year has made a big difference on offense, restocked by the likes of George Pickens and Javonte Williams. But the defense? Big problems. [25:48] Evan is in Houston for one of the season's biggest series, and Kevin says [42:12] Texas A&M's win over Notre Dame in South Bend doesn't rise to the level of Johnny Football's upset of top-ranked Alabama in Tuscaloosa, but it sends a similar message. In episode 303 of The Just Checking In Podcast we checked back in with returning guest Evan Grant, alongside his wife, Carol Grant. We first checked in with Evan in JCIP #278, where we discussed his career in IBM, fatherhood and most poignantly, the life and death of his son Cameron, who took his own life in 2014, when he was just 21 years old. We also discussed Cameron's legacy and the work he and his wife Carol have done in the last 11 years through the Cameron Grant Memorial Trust. We have heard so many stories of suicide grief on this podcast and one common trend we sadly find is that when parents lose a child to suicide or other causes, it can often spell the end of their marriage or relationship. Evan and Carol's marriage survived Cameron's death and we wanted to check in with them about how they got through it as a couple, supported each other through their respective grief journeys and came out the other side. In this episode we discuss how Cameron's death affected Carol, the different ways Carol and Evan grieved for Cameron, how the Trust became a beacon for both of them, but also became something they needed to take a break from, from time to time. We finish by discussing how important trust and communication were for their relationship in navigating their grief, how conscious they were that things could unravel easily if they were complacent, and where they are now with their grief and their marriage vs when Cameron died. SportsDay Insiders Kevin Sherrington and Evan Grant are joined by Lia Assimakopoulos and Brad Townsend to discuss [9:00] a busy time in Dallas sports. Besides describing the Wings' debut, Kevin asks Lia if the Stars have reached a tipping point with their third consecutive conference finals. What if they don't beat the Oilers and make the Stanley Cup Final? [20:08] Brad tells us how Scottie Scheffler, who won his third major over the weekend, has turned himself into the PGA Tour's most dominant player since Tiger Woods. [32:15] Brad also gives his take on Cooper Flagg, whom he calls the draft's best two-way prospect since LeBron James. SportsDay Insiders Kevin Sherrington and Evan Grant are joined by staff writers Myah Taylor and Lia Assimakopoulos to talk [32:30] about the Stars' second round series against the Jets and [15:20] Friday's debut of the Wings and their new star, Paige Bueckers, the No. 1 pick in the WNBA draft. Evan tells us about the impact of Bret Boone as the Rangers' new hitting coach. And Kevin and Evan discuss [00:50] the second shocking development of the Mavs in the last three-and-a-half development: the Mavs moving from 11th to first in the lottery to earn the right to draft Cooper Flagg. Or at least we hope that's what Nico Harrison does. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit podcastchoices.com/adchoices
SportsDay Insiders Kevin Sherrington, Evan Grant and Tim Cowlishaw discuss [8:20] the Stars' Game 7 win over Colorado and what it means going into the second round against the Jets. Tim reminds us that momentum is hit-and-miss in hockey, especially if your goalie is only occasionally great, as is the case with Jake Oettinger. [26:10] Evan explains what Chris Young wants from Bret Boone, the Rangers' new co-hitting coach. [41:30] Kevin says no franchise in the NBA has given up on better point guards than the Mavs, who traded Jason Kidd before his prime, let Steve Nash and Jalen Brunson walk, then traded Luka Doncic in his prime. That's at least three Hall of Famers. [56:30] The guys also discuss the Kentucky Derby and a contract extension for the Big 12's Brett Yormark. Learn more about your ad choices. [8:15] Before hitting the door, David tells us what the Cowboys were thinking before their early-round picks, in particular, and how they went for value over need. [27:20] Evan gives us the low, low-down on the Rangers' offense, including the awful chase numbers across the board and whether firing the hitting coaches or adding a bat is the answer. [48:30] Kevin points out the importance of the Stars' breakout Game 5 win and what Jake Oettinger's play portends going forward. And it's Nelson Week at Craig Ranch. Learn more about your ad choices.
