It's April 28th, 1975 and the best basketball player in the NBA plays in Buffalo. Bob McAdoo wins the MVP for the Buffalo Braves who are in the playoffs and taking on Wes Unseld, Elvin Hayes and the Washington Bullets in a fierce series that would eventually go 7 games. One of the unsung heroes for the Braves is on the cover of Sports Illustrated from 50 years ago as he soars to the basket during game four of the Eastern Conference playoffs. The 6'6 forward had a standout college career for the Oklahoma Sooners where he was the schools 2nd all-time leading scorer and all-time leading rebounder at the time of his graduation. Playing for John McLeod at Oklahoma, Heard averaged 21.7 points and 12.5 rebounds per game in his senior year. Taken by the Supersonics in the 3rd round, Heard didn't do much in his first two years in Seattle before being traded to Chicago and then in 1973 to Buffalo… and it was there where his NBA career took off. Playing alongside McAdoo and Randy Smith, Heard did the hard work averaging a double-double in his two years and helping take the team to their first two playoff appearances… But after a successful 1974-75 season, Heard was shocked when he was dealt yet again… this time to Phoenix where he once again would play for head coach, John McLeod. The Suns were languishing in the West before Heard's arrival, but soon they took off… Playing in a league high 86 games, Heard once again averaged a double-double as the Suns made the playoffs and beat Seattle in 6 games and the defending champion Warriors in 7 with Heard once again averaging 14 points and 11 rebounds to advance to the '76 NBA Finals. Awaiting the Suns were the Celtics and with the series knotted at two games each, game 5 was played on the parquet floor in Boston… and what a game five it was. Some call it the greatest NBA playoff game ever played. In one of the craziest finishes of all-time, the Celtics took a 2-point lead with 1 second left to play in the 2nd overtime. That's when Gar Heard made the basketball version of The Shot Heard Round the World. A 20-footer over the outstretched hands of Don Nelson that hit nothing but the bottom of the net. On to the 3rd overtime it went where the luck of the Celtics Green finally prevailed and won the series in 6 games. But for one moment… one second to be more precise… Gar Heard made a shot of a lifetime. On the Past Our Prime podcast, Heard tells us all about the shot, and the technical foul Paul Westphal and the Suns took on purpose to help give them a shot… a shot Heard says was meant for him to take! Heard tells us how shocked he was to be dealt from cold and snowy Buffalo to the desert in Arizona in the middle of the 75-76 season and how Coach McLeod mentored him both in college and the pro's.  Heard's career was more than just one miraculous shot and he tells us about the block he had on a young Keith Wilkes baseline jumper that helped  knock off the Warriors and send the Suns to the Finals. A week after the Giants Bobby Thompson hit the Shot Heard Round the World in New York it's Gar Heard's turn to do it… this time in Boston. Just a few miles away from where the original Shot Heard Round the World took place two hundred years earlier in April of 1775. One of the greatest shots in NBA history and Heard tells us all about it on the Past Our Prime podcast. Listen and subscribe to the show for your weekly dose of sports history. The book aimed to cater to a wide audience, from shark enthusiasts to students and educators, providing accessible information about sharks. Dr. Abel highlighted the collaborative process of working with illustrator Mark Dando, emphasizing the importance of having a skilled illustrator to complement the text. He mentioned that the illustrations by Marc Dando played a significant role in shaping the framework of the book and making it visually engaging for readers. The book's format, with concise and informative entries on different shark-related topics, was designed to be easily digestible for a broad audience, including young readers and those new to shark science. Furthermore, Dr. Abel discussed the challenges and rewards of writing books, mentioning the labor of love involved in the process. He shared his experiences with previous books and the importance of having a publisher like Princeton University Press to work with. Overall, Dr. Abel's discussion provided valuable insights into the inspiration, collaborative process, and audience considerations involved in writing "Sharkpedia." The book serves as a valuable resource for those interested in sharks, offering a blend of scientific information and engaging illustrations to educate and inspire readers about these fascinating creatures. The podcast episode featuring Dr. Daniel C. Abel discussing his book, "Sharkpedia," highlighted the crucial role that books play in providing accurate information about sharks and dispelling myths, especially in the age of social media and misinformation. "Sharkpedia" was described as a comprehensive resource that covers various aspects of shark biology, ecology, and behavior in an accessible and easy-to-digest format. The book serves as a valuable tool for shark enthusiasts, educators, and students to learn more about these fascinating creatures. In the discussion, it was emphasized that books like "Sharkpedia" offer a reliable source of information that can counteract the spread of misinformation often found on social media platforms. With the proliferation of sensationalized content and myths surrounding sharks, having a well-researched and expertly written book becomes essential in educating the public and correcting misconceptions. The conversation also touched upon the challenges faced by educators and scientists in reaching a wider audience, especially younger generations who may prefer consuming information through social media and video content. Despite the changing landscape of information consumption, the enduring value of books was underscored, particularly in providing in-depth knowledge and a more nuanced understanding of complex topics like shark biology. Furthermore, the episode highlighted the need for books like "Sharkpedia" to serve as a bridge between scientific research and public understanding. By presenting accurate and engaging information in a format that is accessible to a broader audience, these books can help foster a deeper appreciation for sharks and promote conservation efforts. The hosts of the Beyond Jaws podcast, Andrew and Dave, took a moment during the episode to reminisce about past experiences and connections in the field of shark science. They highlighted the long-lasting relationships and memories formed over the years, emphasizing the significance of these connections in their careers. Dave mentioned a particular event at a bar in Catalina Island back in February 1983, where they first met. This event brought back memories of interactions with prominent figures in the shark science field, such as Perry Gilbert, Don Nelson, and Leonard Compagno. The hosts reflected on how these relationships have endured over time, despite not having seen each other for many years. Keith Smart enjoyed the experience of playground basketball and the greatest collegiate spotlight of all…the NCAA Tournament. Keith hit one of the biggest shots of all helping Indiana capture the 1987 National Championship. But it was events on and off the court that have helped him see God's Championship Game Plan. You'll be challenged to Power Up for Christ as you follow his journey.    Bio: He is perhaps best remembered for hitting the game-winning shot in the 1987 NCAA championship game that gave the Indiana Hoosiers a 74–73 victory over the Syracuse.  After two seasons at Indiana, Smart was signed by the San Antonio Spurs. He also played in the World Basketball League and later in the Continental Basketball Association with the Rapid City Thrillers (1995–96) and Fort Wayne Fury (1996–97).[6] He also played two seasons in France, and one in Venezuela. In 2002, Smart finished the season as interim coach of the Cleveland Cavaliers. In 2003, he became an assistant with the Golden State Warriors. In 2010, Smart took over for Golden State Warriors head coach Don Nelson before the start of the 2010-11 training camp. He later joined the Sacramento Kings as an assistant coach in November 2011. On September 17, 2014, the Miami Heat announced they had hired Smart as an assistant coach. On May 12, 2021, Smart was announced as Assistant Coach of the Arkansas Razorbacks under Head Coach Eric Musselman. On January 15, 2022, Smart served one game as the Arkansas interim coach while Musselman was out with shoulder surgery. Smart led the unranked Razorbacks to a thrilling 65-58 victory over No. 12 LSU in Baton Rouge. Smart and his wife Carol have two children.  His son Jared played football at the University of Hawaii.    Links/Books/Resources: The Heart of an Athlete 30-Day Devotional PDF: https://file.ac/UvlI0UtgjKE/ Join Power Up Family here on Facebook! https://www.facebook.com/groups/powerupsports/ Sports Ministry Certificate Program through Our Daily Bread University @ odbu.org/sports   MB019F8ESWDSEVP

Naismith Hall of Famer Sidney Moncrief – a former Bucks all-star and assistant coach – joined us (2nd time on SGG!) to discuss leadership across different eras. He identified a critical shift in player-coach relations that occurred in the early 2000s and offered broad insights on leadership across diverse settings. We discussed: 1. How do relationships look in the NBA? In the 1980s: Corporate. “There were no relationships. You were told what to do. In the 2000s “there was a new source of empowerment among the players.” At that point, if you were an assistant coach, your sole purpose was to develop a relationship with players. “They were no longer doing what you told them to do because you were the leader. They wanted you to earn their trust.” 2. The impact of the rise of AAU. 3. One thing that has not changed in coaching: “Once players know that you care…right away, the trust goes up. And the respect goes up.” What matters most: caring, transparency, honesty, integrity. 4. Coaches showed care behind the scenes. 5. Principles are important in action, not just in what you say. Great coaches “walk the talk.” (Don Nelson. Del Harris, Rick Majerus, etc.) 6. Sidney's “Cs of Leadership:” Competence, Character, Consistency, Communication. 7. The 1980s was the era of excess in the league – not an era of social consciousness. “We had conversations behind the scenes. But if you had those discussions in public…it would have been detrimental to your career.” It was easier to have those conversations in the 60s and 70s. 8. The importance of “Magic vs. Bird” in shifting from team to individual branding. 9. “Coaches play a major role in giving players a base for being game changers in society.” 10. “You should never be afraid of stepping outside of the box as a coach.” 11. Don Nelson understood that he needed to get the star players on board with ideas first. “He would come to us and ask for our opinions…Great players must be part of your internal team.” 12. “Being a social justice person.” Sidney's thoughts on order and action in a sports context – a sensitive and complicated matter. 13. Could Coach Eddie Sutton coach the same way today? “He made some adjustments but his standards never changed.” 14. “GRIT:” Growth, resilience, intentionality, tenacity. 15. Body language. Reading cues. 16. Authenticity. “The worst thing as a leader is for people that you lead to not know who you are and what you stand for.” 17. “Empathy should have no age limit.” 18. Having a purpose. 19. The diversity in the game. 20. Principled coaches are “setting their players up to be social game changers in society, to accelerate their life's purpose.”
