New course to encourage sustainability in medtech with Green Labs

A new micro-credential course to encourage sustainability in the medtech, pharma and public sector in Ireland has been launched at University of Galway. The Green Labs initiative has been spearheaded since 2019 by Dr Una FitzGerald, Associate Professor of Biomedical Engineering in the School of Engineering and a Principal Investigator within CÚRAM, the Research Ireland Centre for Medical Devices. Green Labs develop medtech sustainability course The new 10-week microcredential programme is aimed at Ireland's extensive laboratory industry, including medtech and pharma, healthcare and science and the research sector and builds on the success and impact of the Green Labs initiative, which aims to reduce the environmental impact of laboratory practices. Dr Una FitzGerald said: "Once I took on board the considerable contribution that sustainable lab practices can make to global efforts to reduce GHGs and different kinds of waste, I felt compelled to act, because I supervise and teach many different cohorts of students. I feel I have a duty to do all possible to mitigate the climate and biodiversity crisis and feel fortunate that I am in a position to help. "As Ireland's medtech and pharma sectors continue to grow, so too does the responsibility to operate in an environmentally sustainable fashion. Laboratory testing is a crucial part of operations in these organisations, as well as for hospital and environmental testing - just think of how many lab tests are require to diagnose disease or to prove that the water you are drinking is safe. Medical device manufacturers also need lab tests to prove that implantable devices are sterile, and pharma companies use labs characterise the properties of drugs." The green labs journey commenced in 2019 with CÚRAM becoming the first laboratory in Europe certified as 'Green' by American non-profit, My Green Lab. Meeting this standard required raising awareness of the impact of lab work on the environment and prompted efforts to reduce plastic waste, energy and water usage and adopt green principles of synthetic and analytic chemistry. One fact learned was that a single ultra-low temperature freezer, used to store lab samples, uses as much energy as the average household. In 2020, Dr FitzGerald developed a course module for postgraduates on green lab principles and practice, which more than 170 students have taken to date, including online at universities in England, Scotland, Germany and Denmark. On Earth Day in 2022, Irish Green Labs (IGL) was launched by Dr Fitzgerald, in collaboration with Sustainable Energy Association of Ireland and Dublin City University to promote sustainable methods within public and private laboratories on the whole island of Ireland. The new online microcredential programme Green Labs Principles and Practice, will go further to address the lack of awareness of the impact that lab practices and behaviours have on the environment. Employees in corporate and public sector are being targeted through this course and the first 20 places are funded through Springboard. The first students enrol in September. Microcredential courses are short and accredited to meet the demands of learners, enterprise and organisations, created by Irish Universities Association (IUA) partner universities in consultation with industry and enterprise, under the MicroCreds project. Green Labs Principles and Practice will allow employees to examine how the organisation of, and practices in, scientific laboratories can be reformed to reduce their environmental footprint and be established on a more sustainable basis. The Irish Green Labs network is run on a voluntary basis, supporting more than 37 organisations within the public and private sectors, including all the higher education institutes, the Environmental Protection Agency, 10 hospitals and seven companies. Dr Fitzgerald's work in this area ultimately led to inclusion of sustainable lab practices in Taighde Eireann/Research Ireland's Climate...

Helpster Charity, an international nonprofit harnessing technology to improve access to essential healthcare in underserved communities, has released its 2024 Annual Report, reaffirming its mission to reduce child and maternal mortality across Africa and Asia. The report highlights Helpster's growing impact through its transparent digital platform, which connects vulnerable patients with critical healthcare funding. Over the past year, the organisation managed 786 patient cases through its healthcare funding programme. Of these, 515 patients were admitted, with 458 treatments completed and paid for. Kenya accounted for the highest number of cases at 48.8 percent, followed by Nigeria at 39 percent. Cambodia and Bangladesh made up the remaining 13 percent. The average cost of saving a life through Helpster's programme was just 136 US dollars. Patients were treated for a range of serious conditions including blood disorders, diabetes, anaemia, malnutrition, heart disease, pneumonia, malaria, and complications requiring surgery such as caesarean sections and hernia repairs. Helpster also conducted eight free medical outreach campaigns in Nigeria, Kenya and Bangladesh. These brought free health screenings to 3,500 individuals in remote areas with limited healthcare infrastructure. Of those screened, 1,485 received treatment onsite, while 54 were enrolled into the core Helpster funding programme for more advanced care. Kate Lysykh, CEO of Helpster Charity, expressed her appreciation to the organisation's network of donors, volunteers, partner hospitals and staff. She noted that the charity has strengthened its technological infrastructure and anti-fraud systems, ensuring a fair and efficient distribution of aid. "In 2024, we saw a 45 percent increase in cases treated and completed, and nearly doubled the number of patients treated during our medical outreaches when compared to 2023 figures. We now have 59 verified partner hospitals and 91 active volunteers. "Helpster has evolved into a unique platform where vulnerable individuals, donors and medical professionals come together to change lives. By offering an easy, efficient and transparent way for individuals to make a tangible difference, Helpster is setting a new standard in the fight for healthcare equity", Lysykh said. She urged more individuals and organisations, including private and government hospitals, to join Helpster's mission to deliver affordable, life-saving care to children and mothers in need. To save a life, you can make a donation on the Helpster website. A podcast interview with Nikita Kuzmin the founder of Helpster can be heard here. This episode features a conversation with Rupert Read, co-director of The Climate Majority Project. It was recorded in March 2025.Rupert is an Emeritus Professor of Philosophy at the University of East Anglia, a former spokesperson for Extinction Rebellion, and at the Climate Majority Project, works to build a mass, moderate climate movement by supporting community-led adaptation, democratic participation, and practical climate action across the UK. He's the author of several influential books on climate and society, and is a frequent commentator on the likes of the BBC, Al Jazeera, and other major platforms. His latest book, Transformative Adaptation: Another world is still just possible, argues that we are now beyond the safe climate threshold and must bring adaptation to the cenre of our response — not as retreat, but as an opportunity for deep change. Transformative Adaptation offers a framework for reimagining how we live, work, and govern in the face of climate impacts. It champions localism, community resilience, and working with nature, while challenging dominant systems that are no longer fit for purpose.Amongst other things, Rupert and I discussed how communicators can help audiences meet the realities of our current predicament with active hope and a sense of agency, which actions and interventions need to be taken and how we can support them, and what the concept of “thrutopia” offers for imagining what it all might look like.Additional links: Get Rupert's book Transformative Adaptation: A new world is still just possibleCheck out Rupert's website The Climate Majority Project websiteSome words from Rupert on ThrutopiaArticle with Caroline Lucas about climate populism

In this Heartline Echo Episode, I revisit a powerful conversation with Drs. Maryanna Barrett and Maria Paasch, two innovative OB-GYNs who have transformed their practice by integrating functional medicine. Their journey from traditional obstetrics and gynecology to a more holistic approach offers valuable insights for healthcare professionals seeking to enhance patient care and rediscover their passion for medicine. Our discussion explores the essence of functional medicine, challenging the conventional "collection of body parts" approach to healthcare. We delve into how this integrative method looks at the body as an interconnected system, seeking root causes rather than merely treating symptoms. Key insights from our conversation include: The definition and principles of functional medicine How functional medicine complements conventional approaches The importance of addressing the mind-body connection in patient care Strategies for incorporating functional medicine into traditional medical practices Discover how to: Recognize and respond to signs of professional burnout Align your medical practice with your personal values Navigate career transitions in healthcare Cultivate a unique contribution to medicine that reflects your passions and strengths This episode offers a candid look at the challenges and rewards of charting a new course in medicine. Drs. Barrett and Paasch share their experiences of overcoming fears, redefining success, and finding greater fulfillment in their work. "Recognize that that feeling isn't because your schedule's too full, you've worked too many days in a row. That feeling is probably telling you that what you're doing is in conflict with your value." This conversation provides inspiration and practical advice for healthcare professionals who feel constrained by conventional systems or are searching for ways to better serve their patients. It's a call to action for physicians to reclaim their role as leaders in healthcare and pursue innovative approaches that align with their values. Join us for this thought-provoking discussion that challenges the status quo in medicine and offers a vision for a more integrated, patient-centered approach to healthcare. It's finally out! Brandon Thrower and Carrie Baris (co-race directors) sat down with me to go through all of the details of the new course for the Hellbender 100 coming up on May 9-10, 2025. After Hurricane Helene, so many of our beautiful trails were destroyed by falling trees and landslides. Through the hard work of so many, trails have been opening up, but it is going be quite a while before we can access Mt. Mitchell and many parts of the Blue Ridge Parkway. BUT, thankfully Hellbender can still happen, and Brandon and Carrie have worked so hard and giving everyone the best course possible for not only the runners, but their crew. Listen as they describe the course in detail, required gear, aid stations, crew and pacer information, and more. Thank you to all involved in bringing this race to fruition . It is going to be an epic weekend for all! Nicole Qualtieri is an outdoor writer and editor, a conservationist, and a committed outdoorswoman. Over the past decade, she's worked with some of the most notable brands in the outdoor industry, including MeatEater, Backcountry Hunters and Anglers, and GearJunkie, and she has bylines with many well-known outdoor publications, such as Outside, Modern Huntsman, and Backcountry Journal. But despite being plugged in with many of the best names in the outdoor business, she and a few creative friends decided to go out on a limb and start their own outdoor publication– one that focuses on substance over clickbait, depth and vulnerability over the silly quest for virality and search engine optimization. The name of the project is The Westrn, and it combines the best parts of online writing and journalism with a printed, hold-it-in-your-hands newspaper that ships to subscribers four times per year. As you'll hear Nicole describe, the topics covered by The Westrn's include hunting, conservation, and a wide range of outdoor adventure. But the deeper point of it all is to build a tight-knit community of engaged outdoor enthusiasts of all stripes, who appreciate the value of nuanced writing, thinking, and publishing. As many legacy outdoor media brands have become controlled by private equity and now focus on scalability over creativity and quality, the role of people like Nicole and her partners at the Westrn are all the more important— they are taking a real risk to make the Westrn a reality, and I greatly admire their vision and commitment to action. Nicole and I connected online– she was at her home in Anaconda, Montana and I was here in Colorado Springs– and we had an enlightening conversation filled with lots of laughs about her fascinating life, career, and the creation of The Westrn. We discussed her upbringing in what she describes as a high-control religious cult and how hunting and the outdoors were her way of working through some of that childhood trauma. We discussed her non-traditional career path, which included a stint as a stand-up comic, and how she worked her way into the outdoor industry. We discuss the importance of hard work, preparation, and grinding, and how self-confidence is generated from those activities. We discuss the current state of the outdoor media industry, the financial challenges of making it as a freelancer, her writing process, contentment vs happiness, favorite books, and of course, her goals for The Westrn. Nicole was also kind enough to offer some discount codes for M&P listeners, so follow the appropriate links in the episode notes or on the website to get 20% off annual memberships to The Westrn and/or 20% off single issues of the print newspaper.
