Despite leaving christianity years ago, Katie Malia has never needed to find community centered on deconstruction. She forged her own creative life without ExVangelical twitter, podcasts, or White influencers. Not even Brian Recker! Gasp. Nope. Katie found life and community in the arts, comedy, and music. You've seen her on tv commercials. She's opened for big comedians like Margaret Cho. And her dance videos are incredible. But until now, Katie has never publicly told her story of growing up and then getting out of her Calvary Chapel upbringing. And she brought her comedian's eye for the absurd along with her artistic depth and artful expression to this episode.Be sure to catch Katie's standup at the Improv Aug 31!Katie will be doing an artist residency creating an original dance piece in Oxnard, October 18 and 25.And find out more at KatieMalia.comChapel Probation is part of the Dauntless Media CollectiveJoin the Dauntless Media Discord for more conversation with all the podcast communities.Scott's book, Asian-American-Apostate- Losing Religion and Finding Myself at an Evangelical University is available now!Music by Scott Okamoto, Jenyi, Azeem Khan, and Shin Kawasaki and Wingo ShacklefordJoin the Chapel Probation Patreon to support Scott and for bonus content. Happy 4th of July! It is our pleasure to welcome Sam Gallucci to The Hamilton Review Podcast! In this special holiday episode, Sam and Dr. Bob discuss the meaning of 4th of July and the beauty of America. Enjoy! Sam's career began in 1981 when he was hired after college by IBM. Sam rose to Executive Vice President and General Manager of PeopleSoft, one of the first and largest makers of Customer Relationship Management (CRM) software. Sam would soon realize that material wealth left him unfulfilled, so he decided to retire and follow his passion for helping others. Through his passion, Sam saw how homelessness ruined lives and government programs could actually make the problem worse. Sam is Founder and CEO of The Kingdom Center which provides emergency shelter and transitional living assistance for at-risk women. In 16 years, The Kingdom Centers has provided emergency shelter and transitional living centers for over 3000 women and their children. Sam saw suffering in other marginalized communities so in 2014 he founded Treasured Harvest, whose mission remains to provide food and other much-needed resources for migrant farm workers and their families. And Sam has helped provide immigration assistance to these workers. Sam then saw the need to help parents provide a better education for their children in the K-12 public-school system. He founded Revive Academies in 2023 which provides a high-quality, low-cost alternative to public education to Ventura County families. Sam is the senior pastor of Embrace! Church in Oxnard. He is a featured speaker in the areas of business, travel and faith. Sam wrote ‘More than Animals' in 2022 which addresses how to solve the homeless crisis in California and ‘A Love That Nobody Wants' which chronicles his service to those experiencing homelessness. Sam loves California and is a lifelong resident. He lived in Thousand Oaks for 20 years raising his family, and for the past 17 years lives in Oxnard where he is serving the community. He has 3 children and 9 grandchildren and lives in Oxnard with his wife Toni. Share this episode with a friend and we wish you a wonderful Independence Day!

Few beauty brands have had an evolution quite like Southern California-based ColourPop cosmetics (20:50). Launched in 2014 at the height of the DTC era, the brand once released around 40 collections per year. “That's how consumers were shopping,” Vivian Weng, ColourPop brand president, told Glossy. “For a number of years, consumers were looking for the latest launch … and looking to get their hands on limited quantities of something that was very, very specific and timely.” Flash forward to its eleventh birthday this month and things look very different. “[Beauty shoppers] are looking for newness, but in a different way,” Weng said. “The consumer has evolved, and we're trying to evolve with that community.” So far, ColourPop's omnichannel evolution has become a case study for formerly-DTC brands: The brand launched into Ulta Beauty in 2018, then every Target store in 2023, and has cut its annual launches in half. “Especially post-Covid, consumers were starting to get fatigued with so many launches,” Weng said. “It felt very cluttered and noisy, and they were looking for more core, hero products.” But hero need not mean boring: ColourPop's top seller in Target is a $9 body glitter gel ,and its super-pigmented $7 Super Shock pressed eyeshadow is the retail's No. 6 top eyeshadow, Weng told Glossy. The latter is also the first product the company ever made and continues to be its bestseller. “We like to say that ColourPop is an overnight success story 70 years in the making,” Weng said. That is, the brand was born in Spatz Labs, a family-owned contract manufacturer in Oxnard, California. ColourPop co-founders Laura and John Nelson, whose father started Spatz Labs decades before, grew up watching the top cosmetics in the country being quietly made in their family's factory. Seed Beauty, the parent company of ColourPop, is also well-known for being the original manufacturer of Kylie Cosmetics' first Lip Kit. However, due to the demand of ColourPop, Weng told Glossy that Spatz Labs no longer contracts for the industry. Weng joined the company in 2022. Previously, she held executive roles at Anastasia Beverly Hills and L'Oréal; she got her start at Goldman Sachs and McKinsey & Co. In today's episode, Weng discusses the brand's strategic evolution, the challenges along the way and the future of the prolific beauty brand. But first in today's episode, hosts Lexy Lebsack and Sara Spruch-Feiner discuss the top headlines of the week. This includes Walmart's plan to test new high-touch beauty bars in 40 stores, the growing marketing opportunity at Formula 1 events, the rise in clinical testing among leading supplement brands and MET Gala highlights.

After his arrest, investigators would learn that, by the time he appeared on the game show, he was also a killer. In the year that followed, Alcala would go on to murder several other women until he was finally caught and convicted for his crimes. At his trial, Rodney Alcala was found guilty of eight murders, among other crimes, but he is suspected of several other murders, perhaps as many as one hundred or more.Thank you to the Incredible Dave White of Bring Me the Axe Podcast for research and Writing support!ReferencesAssociated Press. 1980. When Cheryl Bradshaw appeared on the popular game show The Dating Game in 1978, she was charmed by bachelor number one, Rodney Alcala, and by the end of the episode, she'd chosen him to take her on a date. However, just minutes after the episode finished taping, Cheryl met bachelor number two in person backstage and was immediately uncomfortable and quickly contacted producers of the show to cancel the date. What Bradshaw didn't know at the time was that, in doing so, she had narrowly avoided spending an evening in the company of one of America's most notorious serial killers. At the time of his appearance on The Dating Game in 1978, Alcala was a convicted sexual predator who had served time for sexual assault and had only avoided a charge of attempted murder on a technicality.
