S2Ep8: The Indoor Air Quality Crisis: The Truth About Airtight vs. Leaky Construction

The Holistic Homes Podcast

Your builder might be skipping a required building code test that could save your home from mold, humidity problems, and toxic indoor air, and you probably don't even know it exists. In this episode, I'm breaking down the dangerous myth that homes need to "breathe" through their walls and why this outdated thinking is creating serious health problems in modern construction. The truth is, your home should breathe like your body does, through a controlled system (your nose), not through random leaks in your skin. Yet builders are still constructing homes that pull in unfiltered outdoor air through walls, windows, and foundations, creating the perfect conditions for mold, humidity issues, and poor indoor air quality. Here's what's really frustrating: since 2012, there's been a building code requirement for something called a blower door test that measures exactly how leaky your home is. This test gives you a specific number (ACH 50) that tells you how many times per hour your home's air is completely exchanged with outdoor air. Older homes from the 1950s-70s often test at 10-20 air exchanges per hour, which means you have zero control over your indoor environment. But many jurisdictions still aren't enforcing this testing, and contractors often don't even own the equipment. The real problem isn't just energy efficiency, it's that as homes have gotten tighter over the years, mechanical systems haven't kept up. You end up with homes that can't breathe properly through their HVAC systems, creating a toxic indoor environment. Whether you're building new or renovating, understanding blower door testing and proper air sealing could be the difference between a healthy home and one that makes your family sick.In Today's Episode, We're Chatting About: • Why the "homes need to breathe" myth is dangerous for your health • How to read blower door test results and what numbers to aim for • Why your builder might be skipping required building code tests • The connection between air sealing and mechanical system design • When and how to demand proper testing during construction

Welcome back to our weekend Cabral HouseCall shows! This is where we answer our community's wellness, weight loss, and anti-aging questions to help people get back on track! Check out today's questions:    John: Hey doc. I've been doing the heavy metal detox once a year for about 5 years now. Should I keep taking other supplements while I'm on the detox. I take men's hair support, balanced zinc , magnesium and dns . Just wanted to know if the detox cancels out the other stuff . Thanks                                                                                                                                 Tanya: What causes Glucose-6-Phosphate Dehydrogenase to be high? My number has been considered "high" for my last three readings.I cannot find any information regarding higher levels, but a lot on lower levels. Thank you                         Anonymous: Hi Dr. Cabral! I've used things like ACV and homemade fire cider in the past for various reasons, but stopped because I would instantly develop mucus in the back of my throat. Seemed like maybe I was adding stress to my body rather than the intended healing properties I was looking for in these remedies. Is this a histamine issue? I know I'm sensitive to high histamine foods and alcohol and will instantly flush red and feel overheated especially face, neck, and all my joints. I tend to avoid these things. Should I stay away from things like ACV and fire cider while I'm sorting out my histamine issue? Thanks!                                                                                                                                                                Anonymous: Hi Dr Cabral, thank you for all you do! Im currently studying to become an IHP and have learnt so much!I have a couple questions, firstly, I live in Australia & just wondering if at the end of becoming an IHP do you recommend to go onto study naturopathy as I have an interest in that or do you think IHP alone is enough? Secondly, I am 29 and I have always struggled with a really heavy period. It has gotten heavier & I get a lot of clotting. I had test done awhile back with Naturopath and come back a little lower in progesterone, but all my other hormones were perfect. I get sore breast, hold water weight and am irritable after ovulation. I used to experience PMDD. I have done the 21 day detox & am currently doing the CBO protocol as I also have quite severe Leaky gut. Thank you                                                                           John: Hey doc. If I buy the red light cap that you recommend should I still take your men's hair support . If you're maintaining a healthy lifestyle—regular exercise, balanced nutrition, minimal alcohol—and still experiencing fatigue, weight fluctuations, digestive issues, and hormonal symptoms, you're not alone. This was Jenny's experience. After two years of persistent health challenges, she came to us as a last resort. She had already spent thousands of dollars on care that didn't produce results. No comprehensive testing. No targeted interventions. Just more supplements and generic advice. Her case wasn't unusual. What made the difference was data. Through our 1:1 program, Jenny completed a full panel of functional assessments, including: Hormone & adrenal testing (DUTCH test) Comprehensive gut analysis Nutrient and inflammatory markers Genetic testing to understand her body's metabolic and detox pathways The findings confirmed several core issues: Severely diminished cortisol output Estrogen dominance with low progesterone production Leaky gut and poor gut microbiota diversity Methylation and detoxification gene variants contributing to poor recovery and persistent inflammation Once we had this information, we developed a structured plan with targeted interventions to support endocrine function, rebuild gut integrity, and address her specific genetic vulnerabilities. Within weeks, she began to notice improvements: more stable energy, clearer cognition, better sleep, and less bloating. While she's still progressing through the program, the results so far validate a simple principle: symptoms require investigation—not assumption. If you've been told “everything looks normal” but still don't feel well, you may benefit from the same thorough, data-driven approach.

What Is Elopement in Autism? Elopement—also known as wandering—is a common behavior among children with autism. It refers to when a child leaves a safe environment without permission, often placing themselves in potentially dangerous situations. According to the National Autism Association, 49% of autistic children have attempted to elope, and the behavior typically peaks between ages 4 and 7. Understanding the causes of elopement is the first step toward reducing its frequency and improving safety. Top Causes of Elopement in Autistic Children 1. Sensory Overload or Sensory Seeking Many children with autism experience sensory processing differences. They may find certain environments too loud, bright, or overwhelming, leading them to flee. Others may seek out sensory-rich experiences—like spinning fans, running water, or flashing lights—and wander off in pursuit of them. 2. Communication Difficulties Children with limited or nonverbal communication skills may elope as a way to express a need or emotion. Elopement becomes a nonverbal message, saying “I'm upset,” “I need a break,” or “I don't understand.” 3. Escaping Demands or Transitions Some children elope to avoid non-preferred activities, such as schoolwork, chores, or social interaction. Elopement can function as a behavioral response to challenging expectations or transitions. 4. Anxiety and Fight-or-Flight Responses Autistic children often experience anxiety in social or unfamiliar settings. For some, running away is a natural response to overwhelming fear, acting as a way to self-soothe or find safety. 5. Impulsivity and Poor Executive Function Children on the autism spectrum may also struggle with impulse control and planning. In some cases, they may run impulsively without a clear goal or without recognizing potential dangers. 6. Goal-Directed Wandering Not all elopement is escape behavior. Sometimes children are simply trying to reach a desired location—like a favorite playground, a relative's house, or even a store they remember. One of the most common, yet unknown, triggers for elopement is phenol sensitivity. Elopement is from many things but the sensory overload and impulsivity also come from phenols known to contribute to eloping.  Phenols are the natural colorings in foods such as in fruits and vegetables. Phenols are also in the artificial colorings that are in yogurt, candy, and popsicles, etc. Used industrially, they help form and are contained in plastics. They can be an allergen, whether from food or plastic products. People with poor methylation are often phenol sensitive. It is very common for children on the autism spectrum to be allergic to phenols. This is often due to an ill digestive tract. Normally the body could properly utilize and eliminate phenols. Phenols and salicylates are in most foods. Candida/yeast overgrowth and leaky gut contribute to phenol sensitivity. Leaky gut will allow these chemicals to enter the bloodstream in high  concentrations. This alarms the body and triggers an immune response which creates an allergy to these chemicals... Behind the Scenes of Autoimmunity: What's Really Triggering Your Symptoms?

In this episode of the School of Doza podcast, we go behind the scenes of autoimmunity to explore what's really triggering your symptoms. From past infections to gut dysfunction, vitamin D deficiency, adrenal overload, and genetics—this episode unpacks the root causes that conventional medicine often overlooks. 5 KEY TAKEAWAYS Most autoimmune disorders are connected to previous infections, including viruses and bacteria. A damaged gut barrier can trigger immune dysregulation—leaky gut is real. Vitamin D isn't optional: low levels suppress the immune system's ability to respond. Chronic stress and overactive adrenals can drive autoimmune flare-ups. Genetic variants like MTHFR may increase susceptibility to autoimmune conditions. FEATURED PRODUCT The Good Poops Challenge is an 8-week reset designed to support your gut, liver, and gallbladder—key systems often disrupted in autoimmune conditions. As discussed in this episode, improving digestion is foundational for reducing inflammation and supporting immune resilience. In this enlightening episode of You're Not Broken, Dr. Kelly Casperson sits down with Dr. Steven Gundry, renowned cardiothoracic surgeon turned gut health advocate. Dr. Gundry shares the personal and professional journey that led him from the operating room to the forefront of nutritional science. He breaks down the concept of leaky gut and how it contributes to autoimmune diseases, emphasizing how dietary changes can radically transform health outcomes. Together, Dr. Gundry and Dr. Casperson dive into the deep connection between gut health and mental health, the underrated power of vitamin D, and the hidden dangers lurking in our food supply and personal care products. They also tackle the pharmaceutical industry's influence on medical training and why it's time for a paradigm shift in how we understand disease and wellness. If you've ever wondered how your gut impacts everything from anxiety to skin health—or why your mouthwash might be raising your blood pressure—this episode is for you. Top Takeaways: Dr. Gundry left a thriving surgical career after witnessing remarkable patient healing through nutrition. Leaky gut is a real, measurable condition that drives many autoimmune disorders. Genetics are less impactful than lifestyle, behavior, and environmental factors. Whole food diets can reverse chronic illness and improve quality of life. The gut microbiome plays a central role in immunity, skin health, and brain function. Modern agriculture and personal care products can damage the microbiome. Vitamin D is a foundational nutrient for both gut and mental health. Gut health is deeply tied to emotional states like anxiety and depression. Mouthwash can disrupt the oral microbiome and raise blood pressure. Probiotics and prebiotics are helpful—but only when used with care and intention. We must become more aware of what we eat, apply, and ingest daily. As international educators, like so many others, in a sense, we tend to write chapters to our life stories. These stories can be organized by countries, schools, travel, and, of course, the regular categories of relationships, family, children, aging, and so on.We were fortunate to catch our guest, Mark Lewis, just as he was reflecting about the chapters of his international experiences, with his retirement coming up in a couple of months.Mark is a seasoned international educator with experience at the International School Manila, American International School Riyadh, Concordia International School Shanghai, Bodwell International School, International School Ho Chi Minh City-American Academy, and BASIS Park Lane Harbour. He is currently a principal and teacher in the public school system in Canada. One of Mark's core beliefs is that many of the world's future leaders will emerge from students educated in international schools. These students are often multilingual, have received top-tier education, networked with ambitious peers, come from families of means, and almost always pursue higher education degrees—traits that are well-suited to leadership roles. This leadership may manifest in local communities, small business ventures, significant corporate positions, or even public office. It is crucial that international schools continue preparing their students for leadership roles by fostering a skill set that goes beyond academic excellence. We asked "soon-to-be-retired" Mark the guiding question: “What are some of your lessons learned from the various roles you experienced during your years of going global?”With such a long career in international schooling, Mark had a lot of gems to share with us:Commonalities of international schools in AsiaCharacteristics of international schools specifically in ChinaClarifications between legacy international schools, bilingual schools, and local-student-majority schoolsA look at for-profit schools and the various forms they can takeWorking with school boards“Leaky boundaries” in international schoolsRepatriating to one's home countryA rapid-fire sharing of lessons learned from Mark's career overseasResources mentioned in the episode:EARCOS East Asia Regional Council of SchoolsNESA - Near East/South Asia Council of Overseas SchoolsMark's Contact Information: LinkedInThis episode was recorded on March 23, 2025. Categories: Leadership | Change | School Life | School Types Remember to access our Educators Going Global website for more information and consider joining our Patreon community at patreon/educatorsgoingglobal!Email us with comments or suggestions at educatorsgoingglobal@gmail.com Follow us on LinkedIn, Facebook, Instagram or YouTube.Listen on your favorite podcast app: connect from our share page.Music: YouTube. Welcome to The Daily, where we go through the Bible verse by verse, chapter by chapter, every single day. Today, we're looking at Ecclesiastes 10:18-20. Let's take this verse by verse today: Lazy Living Leads to Leaky Lives Through sloth the roof sinks in, and through indolence the house leaks. — Ecclesiastes 10:18 Neglect never nurtures. A house ignored crumbles. A roof unrepaired drips. A heart left unchecked? It withers. Solomon warns us—sloth seeps into life like a slow leak, rotting our resolve and ruining our readiness. Work Wisely, Walk Worthy Bread is made for laughter, and wine gladdens life, and money answers everything. — Ecclesiastes 10:19 Bread brings joy. Wine lifts spirits. Money meets needs. But none of these sustain a man who refuses to work, to build, to prepare. The fool folds his hands, watching opportunities pass like clouds in the wind. The wise man labors, understanding that diligence today prevents disaster tomorrow. Words Will Wander Even in your thoughts, do not curse the king, nor in your bedroom curse the rich, for a bird of the air will carry your voice, or some winged creature tell the matter. — Ecclesiastes 10:20 Watch your words—even in whispers. Gossip grows wings. Complaints catch the wind. What you mutter in secret may soon be shouted in the streets. Instead of cursing leadership, pray for wisdom. Instead of tearing down, build up. A guarded tongue protects a godly reputation. So, what's the takeaway? Diligence defends, wisdom works, and words wander. Don't let laziness leak into your life—build with purpose. Don't trust in bread, wine, or wealth—work wisely. And don't let reckless words take flight—speak with care. Today, take one step toward diligence. Patch the leaks. Guard your lips. Walk in wisdom. Because what you sow today determines what you stand on tomorrow. See you back here tomorrow as we continue walking through the Word—verse by verse, chapter by chapter, every single day! #DiligenceWins, #GuardYourWords, #WisdomWorks ASK THIS: What area of your life have you neglected that needs attention? How does diligence today shape your future stability? In what ways can you guard your words more carefully? How can you balance joy, work, and wisdom in your daily life? DO THIS: Patch one "leak" in your life today—whether it's a neglected responsibility, an unguarded word, or a habit of laziness. PRAY THIS: Lord, help me to be diligent in my work, wise in my words, and faithful in my walk with You. Keep me from neglect and guide me toward purpose. Amen. PLAY THIS: Faithful Then/Now.

In this episode, Jen Smiley breaks down the hidden truth about oatmeal—from its effects on your blood sugar and gut health to the anti-nutrients and pesticides lurking inside. Plus, she shares easy clean swaps to satisfy your cravings without sacrificing your health.  Key Takeaways: ✅ Oatmeal spikes blood sugar like ice cream—causing energy crashes and cravings.✅ It contains phytic acid, an anti-nutrient that blocks mineral absorption.✅ Most oat-based products are contaminated with glyphosate, a toxic pesticide.✅ “Non-GMO oats” is a marketing myth—there's no such thing as GMO oats.✅ Bloating? APT 41 has been using a critical VPN vulnerability to infiltrate operational technology (OT) organizations, targeting industries like aerospace and defense. Meanwhile, researchers have uncovered a flaw in China's DNS injection system, which inadvertently leaks internal data—an ironic twist for a government known for its strict internet censorship. Join us as we break down these exploits, their impact on cybersecurity, and what they reveal about modern cyber espionage. We also discuss best practices for securing VPNs, firewall vulnerabilities, and the ethical implications of studying censorship technologies.

Well, the first period was pretty good! Unfortunately for the Philadelphia Flyers, there were 40 minutes of hockey played after that, and Seattle was the far better team for the vast majority of that time. Owen Tippett opened the scoring on a rush after some nice neutral zone work by Sean Couturier & Matvei Michkov, and that was pretty much it. Philly's power play was once again terrible and Sam Ersson wasn't great, and that all resulted in a third consecutive loss at home. Charlie, Kelly & Bill break down the loss, and if the Flyers could possibly sink even further in their final 18 games.
