On this episode of the California Now Podcast, host Soterios Johnson digs into the Golden State's dynamic and diverse restaurants with three experts who know the local food scene inside and out. First, Johnson chats with Elina Shatkin, food journalist and producer of KCRW's Good Food in Los Angeles. Shatkin shares some of her favorite restaurants and foodie neighborhoods across the City of Angels. Shatkin runs the full gamut of good eats, from L.A. institutions to standout sandwich shops and high-end spots. “I just want to give people a good time and help them discover something delicious,” she says. She also takes listeners east, highlighting her favorite newcomers and old-school dining establishments in Palm Springs and the Coachella Valley. Next, Johnson welcomes Mackenzie Chung Fegan and Cesar Hernandez, food critics at the San Francisco Chronicle and the duo behind the paper's much-anticipated Top 100 Restaurants list. They reflect on their process of curating the list and their goal to highlight culinary excellence across price points, cuisines, and regions—from Oakland to San Jose to Healdsburg. “We wanted to make sure that there were plenty of affordable restaurants on this list,” says Fegan, “that it wasn't just a list of places to eat out for special occasions.” Hernandez echoes this sentiment, emphasizing the value of lifting up both legacy and new restaurants. “We also wanted to represent places that have been around for at least 10 or 15 years instead of just the ones that are new.” Together, the critics highlight standout picks, ranging from local taco shops to classic Bay Area mainstays and Michelin-starred meals.
Peter Fegan spoke to Pat Panetta to discuss the results of the 2025 Australian federal election, in particular the results in Queensland. Prime Minister Anthony Albanese led the Australian Labor Party to victory with an increased majority in the House of Representatives. Meanwhile, the Liberal - National Coalition lost a number of seats to Labor including Liberal leader Peter Dutton's own seat of Dickson.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Cost of living and energy bills have been a major focus of the 2025 federal election campaign. Anthony Albanese promised an energy bill reduction of $275. However, there have been no reports of the reduction. Federal Health Minister Mark Butler told Peter Fegan on 4BC Breakfast, "These have been very difficult circumstances. There is not a yes or no." "We didn't promise at the 2022 election we would provide every household with energy bill relief," "When circumstances changed as a result of the Russian invasion of Ukraine, what that did to the gas markets, we changed our circumstances. We put in place significant energy bill relief, and that's what a responsible government does," Minister Butler continued.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

MacKenzie Chung Fegan is the restaurant critic for the San Francisco Chronicle, which has just released its top 100 restaurants list. It's the first time in six years the publication has done a big list like this, and in this episode, MacKenzie goes over how she chose the restaurants and why the Bay Area food scene is absolutely on fire. We go over many of the picks, including the top ten. Also on the episode, Aliza and Matt talk about a recent trip to San Francisco and a number of exciting restaurant discoveries. Some of the places were on the Chronicle's list, while others may have slid under the radar. Matt visited bakeries and coffee spots and had a number of memorable meals. Places visited include: Bodega, Neighbor's Corner, The Coffee Movement, Hi NRG, El Mil Amores, Che Fico, Outerlands, Aziza, Maison Nico, Timbri Hotel.Do you enjoy This Is TASTE? The Australian Crime and Corruption Commission released a 400-page report into Coles and Woolworths which revealed that there was no clear evidence the supermarkets had engaged in price gouging. However, Coles and Woolworths' profit margins have increased since the pandemic making them some of the world's most profitable supermarkets. Peter Fegan said on 4BC Breakfast, "I fully understand the ACCC says there's no clear evidence that there was price gouging, and I need to respect that decision." "But what is the point of all of this if we are no better off than where we were before we started?" "Overall, we should all feel pretty disappointed with the ACCC once more," he continued.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
