In this episode, I talk with Dr. Courtney Conley, world renowned foot expert and author of Walk: Rediscover the Most Natural Way to Boost Your Health and Longevity One Step at a Time, about why walking is not exercise—it’s a physiological necessity. Dr. Courtney makes the bold case that walking speed should be the sixth vital sign. Research shows that a slower walking pace can be predictive of things like dementia and increased cancer risk, and that simply adding 500 steps to a 2,500-step baseline can reduce all-cause mortality by 7%. We also challenge the 10,000-step myth and explain why living in the 5,000–8,500 step range delivers powerful benefits—especially when you sprinkle in five-minute “movement snacks” and intentional faster walking. Seagrass meadows may be the most powerful climate solution underwater, and almost no one is talking about them. Research published in Nature Climate Change shows that seagrass ecosystems store vast amounts of carbon in their sediments, sometimes for centuries. Unlike forests, much of this carbon is locked below ground in oxygen poor environments, reducing the risk of rapid release. But when seagrass meadows are degraded, that long-stored carbon can return to the atmosphere. A study in Science Advances demonstrates that large scale seagrass restoration can significantly enhance blue carbon sequestration while rebuilding ecosystem function. At the same time, NOAA documents how seagrass supports fisheries by acting as nursery habitat for commercially important species and protecting shorelines from erosion and storm damage. The UNEP Blue Carbon report makes it clear that coastal ecosystems like seagrass are essential for both climate mitigation and adaptation, yet they remain underfunded in global policy frameworks. I am excited to welcome Dr. Jayne Morgan as my guest today. She is a cardiologist and the Vice President of Medical Affairs at Hello Heart, specializing in women's health and cardiovascular research. In our conversation, we look at the gaps in clinicians' training around perimenopause and menopause, also discussing gender neutral training, and how men and women are treated differently in the medical system. Dr. Morgan shares her preferred areas of focus when educating middle-aged women about hormone replacement therapy and clusters of diagnoses, which include diabetes, dyslipidemia, high blood pressure, and weight-loss resistance. We examine how myocardial infarctions (heart attacks) tend to manifest differently in women, often with microvascular disease, atypical chest pain, and less obvious symptom patterns. We also explore screening recommendations, such as EKGs, Lp(a) assessments, and mammography for microcalcifications, which might indicate an elevated risk for cardiovascular disease. This fun and lively conversation with Dr. Morgan offers valuable, practical insights into women's heart health. I look forward to recording future podcast episodes with her.
