One of the biggest lessons I learned in my business early on is to focus on what you can control. There are so many things in business that are out of our control. Like whether that prospective client says yes to working with us, whether or not we land that podcast interview or that TEDx talk. We don't control whether people open our emails or not. And even though so much is out of our control, we do control the moments when the ball is still in our proverbial court. Those are the moments before we send the proposal out to that prospective client, when we're crafting that application to that TEDx talk, before we send the email and we reconsider our subject line. And for the overlooked experts among us–those people who are amazing at what they do, but feel like they're relatively unknown–what we control is actually the key to becoming known to the right people for our work. So what do we control? Chris Carter, NFL and NCAAF analyst, hosts the Locked on Steelers podcast, and is joined by Mark Bergin, host of the Bleav in Steelers podcast. The Pittsburgh Steelers just finished rookie camp where Mike Tomlin got to see Kenny Pickett's first steps as an NFL quarterback. But recent comments from Tomlin revealed why the Steelers valued Pickett so high, and might provide insight into how Pickett was overlooked by other NFL teams for leadership and character qualities that weren't obvious unless you had the kind of access the Steelers have to Pitt football. How that could lead to early success for Pickett, even if he's not the immediate starter over Mitch Trubisky or Mason Rudolph and how George Pickens and Calvin Austin III got started with their rookie camp appearances. My husband and I love to play the game “spot the character actor” when we watch TV. You know, the actors that make you say, wait, what have I seen that person in? Why do they look so familiar? Because they've been in freakin' everything. But you have to google them to figure out their names and what else you've seen them in. And I believe those actors hold the key to how we overcome being the overlooked expert. Because you don't need to be Brad Pitt famous or a web celeb to be known for what you're good at. A favorite among my circle of crime writer friends, this week I was pleased to welcome Dennis Tafoya to the podcast. Author of the novels "Dope Thief," "Wolves of Fairmount Park," and "The Poor Boy's Game," Dennis Tafoya's work has not only been optioned for film and television but his short stories have appeared in magazines and anthologies, including "Philadelphia Noir" and "Best American Mystery Stories." Joining me to discuss the prolific '90s heyday of inventive crime movies, in this fast-paced hour-long episode, we take a closer look at the movies "Miami Blues," "After Dark, My Sweet," "Shallow Grave," and "Hard Eight."Originally Posted on Patreon (5/8/22) here: https://www.patreon.com/posts/66166995Logo: Kate Gabrielle (KateGabrielle.com)Theme Music: Solo Acoustic Guitar by Jason Shaw, Free Music Archive

Growing up in Flagstaff, Arizona, Paul Fabritiz followed the example of his older volleyball-playing sister to increase his vertical jump. He also worked on his shooting and skills and became a college-level player. But every season, he seemed to suffer a major injury to his hands, wrists, or feet, and after playing at Mesa Community College and Northern Arizona University, Paul decided to focus his efforts on coaching. This led to him earning a degree in exercise and wellness. During his final year at Arizona State University, Paul hustled to build his nascent coaching business using an evidence-based approach. Doubling down after graduation, he began training ASU players and others who wanted to not only increase their vertical leap, but also become more durable on the court. When Rob Pelinka reached out about Paul training the NBA players and college-to-pros talents he represented at the time, Paul moved to Southern California and continued to grow PJF Performance into one of the most respected basketball training companies on the planet. In this episode, Paul shares: How his mom prepared him for the grind to become one of the best in his industryAvoiding workload spikes to help reduce injury riskHow AAU is causing 12-year-old players to be injured at alarming ratesWays to combat the AAU injury cycle & speed of today's gameWhy upper body resistance training is so key for basketball players To learn more about Paul's coaching, visit his website and follow him on Instagram.

Have you ever asked yourself, “If I'm so good at what I do, why don't more people know about me” Honestly, I've asked this question of myself a lot and I've become obsessed with figuring out the answer in my own business and for my clients. I get to work with a ton of amazing people who are experts, with years of education, experience, and finely honed skills, and the work they do with their clients is incredible. They are the type of people who are so damn easy to refer because their work is so good. They're the kind of people I want to make sure more people know about. But why, if they are so good, so talented, so skilled, why aren't they known for their work? Well, I believe I found the answer to why this happens and why you're the overlooked expert. Disinformation and its impact on elections has been a hot topic for years now. But despite this, little attention has been paid to how this plays out in Spanish-language media. On today's episode of Downballot Counts, hosts Kyle Trygstad and Greg Giroux speak with Bloomberg Government reporter Maria Curi about where Spanish-language disinformation is coming from and what effect it's having on the Latino vote. Maria explains why falsehoods spread longer and faster in the Spanish-speaking community and why it's difficult for government regulators to combat it. Greg and Kyle also break down the series of primary elections taking place throughout the rest of this month, including a big contest tomorrow in Ohio that could be a test of the former President's power. Produced by David Schultz, with assistance from Alex Clearfield and Macarena Carrizosa Do you have feedback on this episode of Downballot Counts? Give us a call and leave a voicemail at 703-341-3690.

Many women and girls with autism are overlooked by a medical community whose training to identify autism is based on the male medical gaze. Because they fail to get correctly diagnosed, women with autism are often identified as having anxiety, or depression, or a variety of other issues – meaning they never get the therapy they need that can help them navigate the world. Jacquie Benestante, executive director of the Autism Society of Texas, and Carly Ott, chair of the Council of Autistic Advisors for the Autism Society of America, join to discuss this issue and take your calls.

Scott R. Anderson is a senior editor at Lawfare, a fellow at the Brookings Institution and a senior fellow with the National Security Law Program at Columbia Law School. He's also the author of a new Politico Magazine piece that raises an often overlooked vulnerability in the presidential election. A lot of attention after Jan. 6 and Nov. 2020 has rightly gone to the Electoral Count Act and other similar reforms, but Scott argues that if Congress really wants to protect the presidency, it can't just reform the process for counting electoral votes. Jacob Schulz sat down with Scott to talk about his Politico article and about the broader landscape of electoral reforms in the aftermath of 2020.Support this show http://supporter.acast.com/lawfare.
