Today's bonus episode is a replay of Episode 2. Fawning is often overlooked as a trauma response, and even more so, misunderstood. This episode is about Fawning - what I call "The Fourth F" after fight, flight & freeze in response to threat. Fawning is mistaken for "politeness" and "having manners", but it's actually a learned threat response. We fawn so that we can dissolve the physical discomfort held in our own bodies when we disappoint someone with our truth. This episode explains why we do it, what happens, and how to begin healing this body mechanism. To learn more, you can sign up for Luis' email series all about fawning, which you can join, for free, here: https://www.holisticlifenavigation.com/fawning-series. Mike Riste serves as the historian for the BC Golf Museum, and is the official historian for the PNGA. He assembled the initial research for “Washington Golf: 100 Years of Growing the Game,” the centennial history book of Washington Golf, published in 2022.Mike may claim he is not a writer, but his body of work is substantial. He co-authored the monumental “Championships & Friendships,” the centennial history book of the Pacific Northwest Golf Association (PNGA); and wrote “Just Call Me Mac,” the biography of noted Northwest course architect, A. Vernon Macan. He first became involved in golf in the spring of 1960 when Capilano Golf and Country Club (in West Vancouver, B.C.) advertised for caddies for their opening day tournament. Mike would later become the very first Evans Caddie Scholarship recipient from the Northwest. In 1986, when the University Golf Course clubhouse (in Vancouver, B.C.) came vacant, MIke assembled a group of volunteers to renovate the structure into a golf museum. Today, BC Golf House is in a building that is the oldest structure still used for golf in B.C., and the BC Golf Museum is the only provincial or state standalone golf museum in North America. In 2013, Mike received the Distinguished Service Award from the Northwest Golf Media Association.

“But, J.R., I just have to get through this project, then I could…” “I just need to finish this quarter, then I could…” “I just need to get the starting spot, then I could…” “…Sleep a little more…” “…Take more breaks…” “...Go on vacation.” I've heard it all. For some reason, we get how recovery works as athletes, but we forgot how it works as humans. Bottom line, there's no such thing as peak performance without recovery. In today's 5 Minute Drill, we're going to get real about recovery. I'm going to show you how to make it the main course, not the leftovers… If you want to be the person showing up with clarity, energy, and courage more often, then make sure to lock in to today's Drill. LET'S GET IT! [00:01 - 20:50] Opening Segment J.R. gives some context and shares a story about recovery and the science behind it [20:51 - 25:55] What's The Drill? Pick ONE of the six non-negotiables, audit it in your life, then commit to focus on it for the next week. If you pick… #1 (Protect your schedule). Look at your weekly schedule, where are you leaving it to chance? Where are there doors open to distraction and other people preventing you from recovering the way you need to? Identify the opportunity, then determine how you're going to manage your schedule better. #2 (Sleep hygiene). What practice can you do to up your sleep hygiene. Is it making your room darker at night? Is it turning down the temperature? Science tells us the ideal sleeping temperature is around 67 degrees. Or do you need to set a nighttime alarm?...meaning that when that alarm goes off, the electronics go off, work stops, and you're starting to prepare for bed. #3 (Active Recovery) . Are there opportunities to do things like an epsom salt baths, infrared saunas, massages, restorative yoga, breathwork, mindfulness, meditation? #4 (Hydration/Nutrition). Do you need to ramp up your water intake? Typically on a base level, we need a ounce of water for every pound of body weight. Do you need to decrease your sugar intake or how your vegetables? #5 (Yoga/Stretching/Tai Chi). Is there an opportunity to stretch more throughout the day? Or schedule yoga sessions to increase your flexibility? #6 (Managing your emotions). Are there certain instances where you're more impulsive…get more emotional? Maybe your commitment includes taking a 15 second pause to breathe when these things come up. Or going on a quick walk, or praying. [25:56 - 28:13] Wrapping Up! In this episode of The Concordia Publishing House Podcast, author Christa Petzold joins Elizabeth Pittman to discuss her book coming out this May, Gathered by Christ: The Overlooked Gift of Church. During their discussion, Christa helps listeners see the church through the eyes of Christ. Find out more about Christa's upcoming book by visiting books.cph.org/gathered-by-christ. Show Notes: Through our fallen world of sin, humans—including those within the Church—can hurt others and push people out the door rather than inviting them in. Christa Petzold empathizes and understands how Christians in the Church have hurt others, but she brings light and emphasis to the ways that Jesus sees the Church as His community of believers, founded securely on Him and His Word.During the episode Christa dives into why many have felt rejected by the modern Church and why it's important to remember who created the Church – God Himself. Listen to this episode to hear Christa explain why the Church is a blessing, what regular church attendance looks like, how Jesus sees the Church, and more. Questions Covered· What are the benefits of studying the history of those who came before us in the faith?·You remind us that the church is created by God and not by man. How can remembering this inform the way we view and participate in our own congregations?·Why is the Church referred to as she/female? What's with the Church/bride analogy?· What role does the pastor fill in the life of the Church?· What are some ways that we can honor the office of pastor and support our pastors in our churches? What do you think are some of the challenges pastors and their families face in ministry?· Lex orandi, lex credenda. Why do our practices in our local congregation matter so much?· For those who don't know, can you define what church hopping is and why it's not a good approach to church attendance?· Your book explains why the Church is both necessary and a blessing in the lives of Christians. Do you have suggestions about how we can lovingly and kindly broach the necessity of Church with people in our lives who have fallen away from attending the Church?· Speaking of Church attendance, a recent study from Lifeway Research found that most Protestant pastors and churchgoers define regular church attendance as twice a month or more - wondering what your thoughts are on this. (Article about the survey: https://research.lifeway.com/2023/02/21/most-pastors-churchgoers-see-more-than-monthly-attendance-as-standard/?ecid=PDM265108&bid=1771054513)· In a nutshell, how does Jesus see the Church?· What is your favorite part of Church and why?About the Guest Christa Petzold is a pastor's wife and stay-at-home mother of four. She holds a master's degree in theology from Concordia University Irvine and a bachelor's degree in mathematics and Lutheran secondary education from Concordia University Wisconsin. EPISODE SUMMARY In this episode of Chan with a Plan, Max Speaks with Chrisa Z Boyce, Executive Coach and Consultant. In this conversation Chrisa discusses how to improve your relationship with time and get more done. QUOTES FROM CHRISA “Keeping in mind that there is a spiritual or emotional component to that. So really being in charge of your energy going into something begrudgingly is just going to make the experience suck for you, not just for everybody else.” “People usually perceive time as if time is their enemy. I do believe I work better under pressure. We tend to not disappoint other people. We all need certain steps to our day, especially when you are starting off in a new relationship, giving yourself an incentive. Human beings don't really understand the impact of their behavior, like, get over it.” “What ends up happening is because human beings are social animals and we don't want to let other people down and we care about not being embarrassed or humiliated or looking bad, or failing in some way, we tend to not want to disappoint other people. So, procrastinators, we'll get everything in at the 11th hour, especially if we're working on a team or working with colleagues. We're not going to disappoint our colleague and not get something in.” TIMESTAMPS [01:27] Chrisa's journey [03:51] Bad relationships with time [06:07] Staying motivated with distant deadlines [12:20] Set good time boundaries [14:34] Prioritizing your time [17:09] Pleasing others versus doing things for you [20:47] Balancing the pleasurable versus non pleasurable tasks [25:22] Ditching the scarcity mindset [31:09] See results from your new habits [35:51] Relationship with time past and present [40:55] Overcoming career change fear [43:29] Take away piece of advice to make the move [46:16] Chrisa's big career challenge and how she overcame RESOURCES & RELEVANT LINKS Chrisa Z Boyce on Social Media: Website LinkedIn Chan With A Plan Max Chan on Social Media

Whether you've experienced it yourself or have seen it happen to someone close to you, you're likely to agree that there aren't many life events that are more emotionally taxing than divorce. Two lives that have been bound together — by law and through shared experiences — are severed, and with that comes the necessities required to complete that break. The emotional component, however, often makes every step in the process as contentious as it can be, with both parties not only going to the mat to look after their own best interests but sometimes — let's face it — also inflicting emotional and financial harm on each other. In a “50/50” state like California, where assets are required by law to be divided equally among spouses, it would seem like a cut-and-dry job, and in some respects, it is. But not all community assets are that easy to divide. The most obvious example of this would be the family home. You're not likely to find many divorced couples willing to live under the same roof with spatial boundaries cutting the residence in half, and, of course, literally dividing a house in half would render both halves unlivable. In reality, arriving at an equitable division of assets after a divorce is a very complex undertaking. There are plenty of considerations to be made — many of which wouldn't even be on the average person's radar. But, if you're contemplating divorce or want to provide some insight to someone close to you who is, you'll definitely want to tune into the latest episode of Absolute Trust Talk, as Kirsten welcomes Glenn Bittner, who is not only a financial advisor with Pacific Wealth Planning but also a Certified Divorce Financial Analyst. Glenn offers a unique blend of practical knowledge and experience that allows him to view the emotionally fraught issue of divorce from the rational, financial side. In addition to his CDFA® certification, Glenn obtained his FINRA Series 6, 63, 65, and 7 licenses. As a former mathematics major, he has a penchant for calculating the present and future valuations of a wide array of financial assets. He was born for this role! In this episode, we're going to discuss: The importance for Glenn and any CDFA® is to ask the right questions and learn essential information about both parties in a divorce proceeding. What a Qualified Domestic Relations Order (QDRO) is, its role in a divorce proceeding, and why it's sometimes best to avoid a QDRO altogether? Why dividing a pension earned by one spouse between both parties can be especially challenging, if not impossible. The various emotional aspects of the family home often make it a particularly contentious part of the divorce process. Why allowing emotion to dominate divorce proceedings may not only lead to a less than equitable settlement but also bring about unforeseen financial consequences for one or both parties down the road. And more! Unfortunately, as we all know, divorce is never easy, and many moving parts require us to set aside emotion so that rational thinking can take center stage – easier said than done, right?! We aim to help you walk away from this episode with a better idea of what needs to be considered when equitably dividing financial assets.

Wisconsin is one of those places that lives in the imaginations of Americans largely in the form of caricature. Full of cheese curd eating, beer loving, Harley riders, the state rarely gets the respect it deserves. In reality, Wisconsin is all of those things and so much more. I grew up 90 minutes south of Milwaukee but it might as well have been a totally different country. Chicago is Midwestern in the way that non-alcoholic beer is beer, in name only. Wisconsin, on the other hand, is pure Midwest. From Friday night fish frys to the homey environs of supper clubs and a relatively laid back sense of community and good spiritedness, Wisconsin is the heart of the Midwest for me.So today I'm excited that in the latest episode of Beer Travelers we're making our way to one of the great overlooked gems in the American craft beer scene: Milwaukee, Wisconsin. To help lead us through this town's glorious and storied beer scene we have two fantastic local guides. Chris Drosner is a long-time beer writer and editor covering Wisconsin and Milwaukee specifically. He's written the Beer Baron column for the Wisconsin State Journal, the daily newspaper in the capital city of Madison. And it's through this column that I first got to know Chris and his take on the Madtown and greater Wisconsin beer scenes. More recently, Chris moved to Milwaukee, where he is now the executive editor of Milwaukee Magazine. Joining Chris to help us on our tour of Brew City this week is Bobby Tanzillo, the senior editor at OnMilwaukee.com, where he writes about beer, whiskey, history, and architecture. He's the author of a half dozen history books, including several about beer and its history in Milwaukee. And he's a great resource for all the beer happenings in the city. While Chris and Bobby compete for scoops on the latest beer news in Milwaukee, it's clear they have a deep respect for one another and they are the perfect pair to help us navigate this jewel on Lake Michigan. For original articles or to read the vast archives or to check out All About Beer. follow us on Twitter @allaboutbeer and Instagram @allaboutbeer. This month we are thrilled to be joined by University of Helsinki doctoral researcher Mariam Khawar. Mariam is in the Doctoral Programme in Political, Societal and Regional Change, which is part of the Faculty of Social Sciences and is affiliated with Helsinki Centre for Global Political Economy. Mariam's work focuses on Islamic economic philosophy, specifically through a Marxist lens. Her work is highly interdisciplinary drawing on feminist political economy, economics, and feminism in Islamic theology and philosophy. She is working toward filling in gaps in the theoretical materials in that discipline. This work started during her master's studies at King's College London, where she made an analysis of Islamic banks during the 2007 financial crisis. We discuss the role of research within global capitalist banking and how her research is not about banking and finance. Rather Mariam focuses on the philosophical aspects of Islamic economics. Uncovering and telling the stories of LGBTQ+ people in history can be rewarding, important work, but it's also often challenging and complex. How far is it possible to understand the sexualities of people in the past from our 21st-century vantage point? And which stories do we forget about? To mark LGBT+ History Month in the UK, Matt Elton hosts a panel of experts – Florence Scott, Fleur MacInnes, Tim Wingard, Channing Joseph and Anthony Delaney – to discuss issues of representation in the past. Effective communication requires intention. Intention requires time and effort, both of which are in short supply in our demanding world. The first thing we must do to address this particular problem is to recognize that there are areas we've overlooked in our communication. Christopher Wallace, President and Co-founder of Innerview, Michael O'Brien, Chief Shift Officer, and Margaret Watts Romney, Speaker Coach, share how to address overlooked aspects of organizational communication. They all share their experience, expertise, and tips that you can use right now to analyze what's going on in your company's communication, strengthen it, and positively impact what you're doing. —--------- If you want to continue to look for inspiration to creatively or innovatively approach decision-making and problem-solving, use the experiences of other business owners who have created great companies. Dan continues to wonder what it is about Kansas City Chiefs Offensive Coordinator Eric Bieniemy that is keeping him from getting more opportunities in the coaching ranks. Today we start the episode with a clip of comedy writer David Sedaris talking about his experiences as an expat, someone who, as he says, "doesn't count." This sparks a conversation about the anonymity that comes with being and living abroad. Is it a good thing? Is it simply a novelty that will wear off the longer you stay in a foreign country? Katy can relate, remembering her time as a completely invisible (she felt) foreigner living in Trastevere, where no one seemed to know she existed. Does Tiffany—whose been in Rome nearly two decades and is no longer even a foreigner—remember what it's like to be the overlooked outsider? ------------------------------------- ADVERTISE WITH US: Reach expats, future expats, and travelers all over the world.
