Nick Kaldas' life as an undercover cop saw him play a drug baron in the market for vast quantities of hemp oil, track a fugitive with a penchant for hair transplants, and pose as a hit man for a spurned lover.Nick was a 21-year-old immigrant lad from Egypt when he decided to join the NSW Police Force. He soon rose up the ranks from working as a junior constable on the beat, then as one of the first Arab-Australian undercover cops, to becoming one of the most senior police officers in Australia. While undercover, Nick tracked a fugitive with a hair transplant, bought hemp oil and heroin at the Sydney Hilton, and was hired as a hit man by a spurned lover. He then had stints as the head of the homicide squad, the gangs squad and led some of NSW's biggest criminal investigations as Deputy Police Commissioner. Nick's work also took him to Iraq to rebuild the police force after the fall of Saddam Hussein's regime.Since leaving the NSW Police, Nick has continued his work in international law enforcement. This episode of Conversations explores crime, gangs, Egypt, migration, the Arab world, Syria, Iraq, Saddam Hussein, policing, law enforcement, corruption, inquiry, undercover cops, films, Batman.Behind the Badge is published by Angus and Robertson.
There's a fair bit about Michelle Brasier's life that doesn't seem that funny. She lost her Dad, then her brother, then was told she had a 97% chance of her own life being cut short by cancer too. Yet she's still finding humour, choosing optimism and singing just about any chance she gets. And like, she's a very funny and talented comedian (and writer, and actor) - so yeah, there's still plenty of laughs still around. In this very special live episode, recorded at the Factory Theatre in Marrickville, celebrating the launch of Michelle's memoir 'My Brother’s Ashes Are In A Sandwich Bag' (named one of Apple’s Best Books of 2024 and first in the list of Audible’s Top Ten Memoirs of the year 2024), Michelle discusses how she lives her life and chooses to see the world, her creative practice, and honoring people who aren't there anymore, even if they're past versions of yourself. Also some very raunchy teenage cast parties. Send us a textWe interviewed artist Justin Williams at COMA Gallery in Marrickville, Sydney, during his solo show, Waiting for Lavender, on until 22nd February 2025.Justin lives and works in Santa Fe, New Mexico, splitting his time between there and a studio in Paris. We had a great conversation about his journey as an artist, including his early years working in New York. His work is narrative-driven, deeply personal, and rooted in family histories, with multiple stories overlapping within a single painting. He employs a belt sander to disrupt the surface after painting, allowing him to push and pull layers, creating unexpected textures and depth. Thanks for talking to us, Justin, we look forward to watching your career flourish.

The Michael Yardney Podcast | Property Investment, Success & Money
In this episode of Michael Yardney Podcast I'm joined by Brett Warren to challenge a common belief many beginning property investors hold: that those who bought into the market 20 years ago had it easy. It's a complaint I hear often—‘If only I had bought back then, property was so affordable.' But what if we told you that investing in property has never been easy? The investors who succeeded weren't simply lucky—they were those who stayed the course through thick and thin. We'll also share the story of Joseph, one of our clients who bought a 2 bedroom apartment in Marrickville, Sydney, back in 2008 and paid $280,000 for his property, which is now valued at nearly $1 million. Takeaways Investing in property has always been challenging, regardless of the era. Long-term thinking is crucial for successful property investment. Emotional resilience helps investors navigate market fluctuations. A strategic plan is essential for achieving investment goals. Quality assets should be prioritised over the quantity of properties owned. Market cycles are inevitable; understanding them is critical to success. Investors should focus on fundamentals rather than short-term data. Education and self-improvement are vital for financial success. Networking with experienced investors can provide valuable insights. Patience and a long-term vision are necessary for wealth creation. "I'm still passionate about what I do, I still love what I do, and I still think I'm one of the luckiest people in the world. I get to make beer for a living and, especially taking the step coming here to Bali, I get to mentor people that might not have necessarily ever had an opportunity like this before, so I feel really lucky that I have the power to be able to do that and pay it forward."Given her fondness for travel, adventure and life on the ocean, perhaps it was destiny that Sam Füss would end up brewing in Bali. Certainly, more than two years after moving to the island's northwest – the "real Bali" as she puts it – she's embracing every opportunity that has come her way.Sam was enticed to move there with her partner Dani by the founders of Beaches Brewing Co back in 2022, and in recent weeks oversaw the release of their first two beers, Pale and Cerveza. The switch of scenery gave her the chance to help build another brewery after being involved in the early stages of a number in Australia, including Little Creatures in Freo and Philter in Marrickville. She joined us from her beautiful home – ocean views on one side, volcano on the other, a pool a few metres behind her, the call to prayer carried on the wind outside – to take us inside the experience of getting Beaches off the ground, training up locals with no prior experience, educating people who've never encountered craft beer before, and working in a beer culture that, in its own way, is like the Australian scene when she moved from the bar at Little Creatures to the brewery around a quarter-century ago.We also trace her career from those early days through building a race track inside Matilda Bay's former brewery in Dandenong to True South, Young Henrys, and the trophy-laden days at Philter prior to the big move. Sam reflects on lessons learned and wisdom gained, on the characters who mentored her, and on the rewards she now finds in mentoring others. And, as anyone who knows Sam would expect, we have a good laugh along the way, with the main interview kicking off at 11:47. Prior to that, we discuss the week's news, including the sale of Westside Ale Works to new owners who plan to keep things as Casey Wagner had them, the impending launch of Vegan a la Beer, a guide to pairing beer with plant-based food, Seasonal and Whitelakes' success in the WA Beer of the Year awards, Burleigh Brewing's 18th birthday re-brews, the epic lineup for High Country Hop 2025, our upcoming event at Molly Rose, and GABS nominations.Relevant links from this week's show:Westside's sale:https://craftypint.com/news/3636/westside-ale-works-sells-but-the-future-still-looks-hoppyVegan a la Beer: The Appetiser: https://craftypint.com/news/3631/vegan-a-la-beer-the-appetiserWA Beer of the Year 2025: https://craftypint.com/news/3629/seasonal-win-wa-beer-of-the-year-with-black-oat-cream-ipa-mudiBurleigh Brewing's 18th birthday beers: https://craftypint.com/beer/11067/burleigh-brewing-18th-birthday-re-brewsThe High Country Hop 2025: https://craftypint.com/event/13525/the-high-country-hop-2025Crafty Cabal giveaways: https://craftycabal.com/giveaways-and-merchThe Molly Rose Story – Distilled: https://craftypint.com/event/13532/the-molly-rose-story--distilledNominate your beers for the GABS H100 of 2024: https://craftypint.com/news/3630/gabs-hottest-100-craft-beer-nominations-now-openSam Sets Sail For Bali: https://craftypint.com/news/2922/sam-sets-sails-for-baliBeaches Brewery Bali: https://beachesbrewingco.com/Thanks to Beer30, sponsors of this week's show.To support the show, contact craig@craftypint.com.

Welcome to Remarkable By Design, where we share the stories of people building world class brands, products & experiences, and explore the choices they made along the way to create truly remarkable things. On this episode I'm joined by Diogo Ferreira, the Founder and Owner of Tuga Pastries. If you're in Sydney like me, you know that Tuga are so much more than a bakery. They're at the heart of what feels like a movement, bringing Portuguese culinary experiences to Australia. Today, people on the coastal walk in Bondi, Bronte & Clovelly, as well as across the inner west, city and even Wollongong, are trading their croissants to don a coffee and Portuguese tart combo on their morning walk. Diogo and Tuga has an incredible story that we get to in just a few moments - a personal favourite detail is that Diogo's father travelled from Portugal to Australia with his secret pastel del nata, portuguese tart recipe, handwritten on paper, however Diogo never learnt how to make pastel de nata from his father, but rather through a few years of testing, reading blogs, old recipes and speaking to his relatives. Today I hear through the grapevine that only 3 people know the incredible recipe Diogo landed on. I'm fascinated to understand how Tuga has built such a beloved local brand, how they stay ahead in an industry where everyday is game day, how they sell and distribute b2b, what it's like growing a business with strong family origins, how they test and experiment with new pastries and offerings, the importance of training, but most importantly how they have contributed to this interesting cultural phenomenon. You can find Diogo at Tuga in Alexandria, Clovelly and Marrickville (soon): Website: https://tugapastries.com.au/ Support the podcast and get access to exclusive snippets and content by following Remarkable By Design below: Linkedin: https://www.linkedin.com/company/remarkable-by-design-podcast/ Instagram: @remarkable.by.design TikTok: @remarkablebydesign https://linktr.ee/remarkablebydesign
Full house this week and we begin with a proper reflection of our live show last week with this being the first episode recorded post show. Few yarns from the show before Kush rather sickeningly admits to watching Major League Cricket as we discuss the intricacies to naming a MLC team. Finally we end with a new mini segment “TCB Tries” as we try things around Sydney and this week we start with a review of Chebbo's new store in Marrickville. Our game this week is “The Tower” as we once again divide into teams with the familiar Migs and Ro vs Kush and Sen. Simple game as each team has a rule in mind and it's up to the other team to guess things within the rule to ultimately guess the rule in the end. First team to guess the rule wins.'We finish with “Agree to Disagree,” a segment where we each have contentious opinions and see if the boys agree with us or not (we bought brand new paddles for this). Few red hot opinions in this edition as Ro froths westernised Asian food, Migs defends Sydney nightlife, Sen glazes Big 4 graduates before Kush fights for his life to prove Sydney has the best coffee.___________________________________________________________FULL PODCAST EPISODES

We catch up with the delightfully named Gwen Venn of Save the Children to talk about the Love Rack, a super fun and clever initiative that allows the op shop to sell clothes in need of repair to those happy to take them on.As advocates of "better done than perfect" and "lazy sewing" if it means you get more out of your wardrobe and dump less on op shops, Ali and Jo are BIG FANS of this idea, especially as it will help those who make a side hustle from reselling. But what about the rest of us, who can barely sew on a button? That's why Gwen at Save the Children has asked Ali and Jo to host a 'Basics of Hand Sewing' workshop at the Marrickville store this month. As we write, tickets are already sold out, but if you'd like to see more of such events, email the girls so they can convince local councils to throw some money at it.Email us: questioningfashionpodcast@slogue.com.auFind Gwen Venn on Instagram @gwen_venn Our Instagram accounts:instagram.com/questioningfashionpodcastinstagram.com/jogambaleinstagram.com/bellstreetOur TikTok accounts:tiktok.com/@bellstreettiktok.com/@slogue_joannegambale This is a public episode. Another glorious week here at TCB, and of course some more audio issues, this week we lost our Would You Rather segment to the podcasting gods. Nevertheless we got some wicked yarns to kick us off as we went on an excursion during the week to Marrickville and the Factory Theatre to support the arts. We discuss our succulent Vietnamese meals before discussing the standup comedy we watched which contained a horrific bomb which leads to a chat about whether we could ever do a live show - truly one of the more aggressively self indulgent chats we've had. We then review Westpac's office snacks. We're in the penultimate week of the game challenge with it all still to play for. The game is the “3 Second Challenge,” very simple name 3 things in a category in 5 seconds and this week it's Kush vs Ro. With Sen AWOL, can Kush get an all important win and cut the lead to half a point and live to see another day in the challenge, or will it be all over red rover? Tune in to find out if Kush can win despite the spectre of Ronald McDonald looming large over him.
In this episode we discuss a new diet book. Strap in it's a long one. The author is doing the publicity tour and ended up on a podcast that we usually love...we did not love. It was a mixed bag but mostly the same only story - big claims, kernels of truth and a whole lot of weight bias. Join us to discuss the good, the 'meh', and the rage inducing. Mentioned in the podcast - Dr Joshua Wolrich's book " Food isn't Medicine' and Maintenance Phase podcast Restaurant Meg had her 'best thing' at was Hello Auntie in Marrickville. In a radio exclusive we tracked down Marco from Marrickville who was making headlines on Brown Cardigan after his phone was found in Perisher. His wallpaper contained a list of fairly cringey goals from ‘get jacked and be 87kg' to ‘have 3 girls on roster.' We spoke to Marco to find out if he's ticked any off the list. Hawke's Brewing was founded by advertising creatives Nathan Lennon and David Gibson, together with former Australian Prime Minister Bob Hawke, in 2017.Bob Hawke passed away in 2019 but his legacy lives on at Hawke's Brewing through a unique arrangement that diverts his royalty share in the business to Landcare Australia, the environmental charity he founded in 1989.We'll talk about that later on in this interview with Nathan and head brewer Brodie French, as well as reflecting on some key milestones for the business.Hawke's brought production of its beers entirely in-house since commissioning its Marrickville brewery in late 2021.And soon after, the company entered the hospitality arena in spectacular fashion with the establishment of the Bob Hawke Beer and Leisure Centre, incorporating the Lucky Prawn Chinese Restaurant. We'll find out a bit about Brodie's brewing passions; Hawke's evolution from a single SKU brand to a more diverse product offering; and its national expansion plans, including recent efforts to establish a beachhead in Melbourne.First up though, I asked Nathan about the significance to Hawke's of the Marrickville venue, which just notched up 12 months of trading. Seven months ago, Anthony Albanese's Labor broke almost ten years of Coalition rule. Labor's celebration were large and loud – and 7am was there to record the moment. We spent the night in Marrickville, home soil for the new prime minister, at Labor's election night party. Over the course of the night we spoke with our reporter Karen Middleton, incoming minister Tony Burke, and, at the end of the night, we got one quick question with the newly-elected prime minister. Today, we return to Labor's election night victory.
On episode 36 of the B-side I speak to Australian boxing legend Nader Hamdan. Once ranked No.2 in the world behind Oscar De La Hoya in 2003. He fought some of the world's best, across all corners of the globe waging wars against the likes of Anthony Mundine, Arthur Abraham, Sam Soliman, and John Wayne Parr. He's thrown his hat into the entertainment ring, appearing on shows like The Contender, East West, Mr Inbetween, The Ropes, Heartbreak High, and Underbelly. We talk about growing up in the diverse and once working-class suburb of Marrickville, where he was bullied as a child and became an angry, out-of-control teenager; who turned his life around by taking his passion for fighting off the street and into the ring at Newtown Police boys club. There he met trainer and fellow Marrickville legend, world champion boxer Jeff Fenech. He talks about his boxing career, shares the details of his toughest fight, and the drive that gave him the ability to push through serious injuries and never take a backward step, earning him the ring name 'Lionheart'.We discuss what happens behind the scenes of a fight promotion, the rules of trash talk, and how he caught the attention of some of the world's best once he started embracing the bad-boy persona. And we jam on the merit of 'entertainment' or 'exhibition' fights in the boxing world where YouTubers like Jake Paul or ex-footballers like Paul Gallen and Sonny Bill Williams fight legitimate boxers or MMA stars like Mark Hunt.Nader talks about his son Hassan Hamdan, a potential boxing champion in his own right, who is following in his dad's footsteps, being coached by Jeff Fenech and making waves on the boxing scene. And he talks about the principles of discipline, respect, and self-belief, being crucial to establishing his successful career in boxing, and have become the driving force behind his mission to help bring direction to troubled youth and help others turn their lives around. This was a cracking episode, Nader is a beautiful soul and a great friend, I hope you enjoyed it as much as I did. Cheers. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.
