Tim Anderson is in and Josh Harrison is out... so what does that mean for the Chicago White Sox in 2023? Both decisions were expected but will the White Sox now make a big splash at second base or simply go with internal options? It was around this time last year that the White Sox declined an option on Cesar Hernandez and Sox fans thought that a long term solution at second base would be what the White Sox would target. The more things change, the more they stay the same. The White Sox need to address the starting rotation. Could a homecoming by Chris Bassitt, Jose Quintana or Carlos Rodon actually happen? Historically, November has not been a month where the White Sox have attacked the trade or free agent markets but maybe with a new manager and direction, the Sox will change tradition. The Nats were shutout by visiting Atlanta 8-0 as Bryce Elder tossed a complete game. Al begins with Washington reaching the unfortunate mark of 100 losses on the season, and for the first time since 2009. Hear what Davey Martinez had to say regarding this in his post game press conference. (05:03) Elder is the second pitcher this month to go the distance against the Nationals, the other being Miami's Sandy Alcantara. It was also Elder's 1st victory since April 12th. Meanwhile, Cory Abbott was very ineffective once he faced the Braves order for the second time. (12:10) The offense struggled yet again while facing a pitcher who has had limited success this season. Al puts in perspective how disappointing Cesar Hernandez's year at the plate has been, as his OPS is currently at .628. (16:05) MacKenzie Gore did not pitch well in his rehab start in Rochester as he allowed six runs in under four frames and gave up a trio of HRs. Will he start for the Nats before the season ends? Live from outside Dignity Health Sports Park in Carson, Wiso Vazquez & Cesar Hernandez provide their reactions from the press conference from Tata Martino as well as the Media Pods where they were able to speak with over 30 players including Raul Jimenez, Ochoa and others.
The Nats lost their 5th straight as they fell 6-2 to visiting Baltimore. Al & Tim start with a birds-eye view of the rivalry (or lack thereof) between the two neighboring teams. If they were to do realignment, would you be in favor of them in the same division? (08:25) The National clung to a 2-1 lead entering the top of the 7th, but that quickly evaporated as all four Oriole runs came while Mason Thompson was on the mound. Gunnar Henderson hit a "Little League HR" which perfectly encapsulated this last place season as Cesar Hernandez committed an embarrassing error in LF. (12:10) Patrick Corbin only ceded one run in six frames as he has had four quality starts in his past five appearances. This leads to a discussion of what likely awaits him in 2023. (23:45) The final 19 games for Washington all will be against divisional foes. The Nats need four wins in order to avoid the dubious mark of 110 losses. At the moment, the Mets lead by the Braves by a half game and the Nationals play those two teams a combined nine times. (26:10) Davey Martinez said Cade Cavalli will resume throwing soon, but he will not pitch in games this season. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit podcastchoices.com/adchoices
The Nats lost 8-5 and are 1-7 this season in Philadelphia. Al & Mark (Live from Citizens Bank Park) evaluate Erick Fedde's rough outing where his former high school teammate Bryce Harper homered off of him the 6th time in the past four years. The hosts hold a lengthy discussion about what went into the decision to pitch to Harper as opposed to walking him. Is something fundamentally wrong with developing pitching in the organization? (15:50) Cesar Hernandez played 2B on Saturday night had an nightmare stretch in the field in the 3rd and 4th innings. He had four instances of questionable defense, but was only charged one throwing verror. (22:20) CJ Abrams made a spectacular play to pull off a double play in the 1st inning. Nats Chat is quite in awe of the amount of athleticism displayed by Abrams on the play. Could he be the best defensive short stop in franchise history? (27:01) "Joey Four Bags" touched' em all again early in the game. Mark then points the absurd home run disparity between the Nationals and Phillies when facing each other this season (32-9). (36:30) MacKenzie Gore will make a rehab start on Sunday in Syracuse for AAA Rochester. Will he pitch for Washington this season? Learn more about your ad choices. Visit podcastchoices.com/adchoices
The Nats beat the Mets again 7-1 in the series rubber match. Al & Mark (Live from Citi Field) marvel at how the team has won five of their past seven games and were able to take a series against a 1st place club in a tight divisional race. The offense had a lot of key contributors, including Keibert Ruiz who came up with three hits in a game that he specifically requested to play. (15:10) Ildemaro Vargas had a RBI and also played a pivotal role in a bizarre double play that benefited Washington in the bottom of the 7th. This odd moment came on the heels of Saturday night's controversial infield fly rule. Cesar Hernandez finally hit his 1st HR of the season and was given the silent treatment from his teammates in celebration. (25:01) Erick Fedde bounced back from his poor outing vs. Oakland to earn the win. He only gave up one run in six frames against a high powered offense. It's his first victory against the Mets in eleven career starts. (28:15) An update on the new six man rotation, that could lead to an eventual MacKenzie Gore start. Anibal Sanchez will return to the mound in St. Louis and Albert Pujols' quest for 700 HRs will be awaiting (current at 695). Learn more about your ad choices. Visit podcastchoices.com/adchoices

The Nats lost the series rubber match to the Cubs 3-2 on Wednesday afternoon. Al begins with more base running blunders as Cesar Hernandez was picked off after collecting a RBI single and points out how poor their metrics are in that category compared to every other team. (06:10) Cory Abbott pitched well as he only allowed two runs in six innings. Abbott was picked up from waivers three months ago after the Giants let him go. (14:05) Al goes around MLB and brings it back home to the on-goings in Washington. The Braves made a contractual move the Nationals never do and Austin Voth continues to succeed in Baltimore. Does it all boil down to Scott Boras? (22:50) On Twitter we sampled for opinions on how to utilize Victor Robles on a daily basis. The responses were all over the map, but there are certainly many fans who are ready to move on from Victor. What say you? Learn more about your ad choices. Visit podcastchoices.com/adchoices
A handful of chefs have been running small restaurants out of their homes for years. They're often low-income people of color operating underground, serving their specialties to neighbors and homesick immigrants. But pandemic lockdowns prompted a surge in interest — and a government move to inspect and license the businesses, with uneven results. Chronicle reporter Elgin Nelson and critic Cesar Hernandez join host Demian Bulwa to discuss who's opening home restaurants, who's showing up for the food, and why the business is much more complicated than it might appear. | Unlimited Chronicle access: sfchronicle.com/pod Learn more about your ad choices. The Nats returned from the All Star Break with a hapless 10-1 defeat in Arizona. Mark & Al begin by catching everyone up from the Juan Soto scuttlebutt as his future was the main storyline while the Baseball world gathered in Los Angeles. Even his flight from D.C. to L.A. drew headlines that lingered all week. Have the chances of him being dealt increased because of this? (22:03) The offense had another poor evening as they were being no hit until the 6th inning and ultimately ended with only three hits. Cesar Hernandez had two of the hits with Soto going 1 for 4. Mark puts in perspective of how rough the offense might be after the trade deadline. (25:34) Patrick Corbin was tagged with the loss on Friday as he allowed five runs in as many innings. His name has surfaced in Soto trade talks as a way for the Nationals to possibly unload his contract. What are the odds of that happening? (33:40) Washington already signed Elijah Green, who they drafted #5 overall last week. What are the expected next steps for the outfielder? Learn more about your ad choices. The Nats came up short in Atlanta 4-3 on Saturday afternoon. Al hosts solo and lays out the hot streak that Juan Soto is on as he has reached base in 19 consecutive games and has homered in both games this series. Might he be continuing his pattern of catching fire in the second half of the season? The Nationals homered twice and Al illustrates how unusual of an occurrence that is this season. (10:10) Cesar Hernandez only has one hit in July, but has remained in the lead-off spot. Should Luis Garcia be given an opportunity to take that over? (14:45) Patrick Corbin came up shy in his attempt for three consecutive solid starts, but did setttle down after a bad opening inning. This leads to an emailer asking if Corbin should be given an "Opener"? (28:05) Our look back at July 2021 focuses on a not so shining moment for the Baby Shark last year in San Francisco. The Nats lost 7-4 to the Marlins as Stephen Strasburg pitched for Washington for the first time in over a year. Mark (live from Miami) and Al dissect his up and down start. Do they focus more on the seven runs he allowed or the five strikeouts he threw? What to make of fastball velocity? (20:45) Nelson Cruz was a late scratch due to a stiff back and will have a MRI soon. The lineup card meanwhile puzzled Al mightily as Ehire Adrianza was placed 2nd in the order (Cesar Hernandez was given a much deserved day off). Why not move up Luis Garcia higher in the lineup? Lane Thomas reached base three times in the lead-off spot and he already has five multi hits games in June. (30:31) Paolo Espino threw a scoreless bottom of the 8th and his ERA is 2.03. HE HAS YET TO PITCH THIS SEASON WHILE THE NATIONALS ARE AHEAD! As the team is in a stretch with no off-days for awhile, he might start a game during the upcoming homestand,. Amelia Lopez returns from traveling with the MexTour to discuss the last three matches with Adriana Terrazas & Cesar Hernandez, what they make of them, what expectations they have from the team and Tata as of this point & if Nations League will serve to ease some of those doubts.
The Nats were pounded 13-5 at the Mets as Erick Fedde was lifted in the 2nd inning. Mark & Al point out just how much Fedde's ERA was affected by the poor outing. Those All Star whispers we mentioned five days ago certainly have been pushed to the background. (08:09) The Nationals starting rotation is in flux as the best options to pitch on Wednesday, Paolo Espino and Josh Rogers, both were used to fill Monday's innings. Mark gives his best guess as to who will take the mound in the series finale. Why is Paolo not given more high leverage situations? (17:05) Washington led 3-0 right away as they surprisingly lead the sport in 1st inning runs scored. Cesar Hernandez collected three hits as his average is just a shade under .300. Has he emerged as a legit trade chip? (25:01) An update on Stephen Strasburg one day after his successful rehab stint for Fredericksburg. When might he return to the Bigs? Mark & Al rehash this unusual game as New York scored three runs right away, before Washington then put up all eight runs in the first two innings. Juan Soto and Nelson Cruz both went deep, which lead to a discussion about each of their season's thus far. (15:06) Cesar Hernandez had three hits before the third inning concluded as he was a big part of the early rally. Dee Strange-Gordon played shortstop for another game as Alcides Escobar remains out with an unusual affliction in his finger. (33:20) Cade Cavalli struck out six in his start for AAA Rochester on Wednesday and then the hosts look at Cole Henry's performance so far this year with Harrisburg. The Nats ended their 8 game losing streak in emphatic fashion as they crushed the Giants 14-4 to open their road trip. Al & Mark (Live from San Francisco) convened at 3:11 AM Eastern to discuss just exactly how the offense busted out in such a big way with 22 hits. (06:31) Juan Soto began the evening with a 1st inning HR, but then a mini controversy developed in his next at-bat. His request for a timeout was not granted as Alex Wood was quick pitching and it resulted in a visibly upset Soto. Mark explains the sequence of events that unfolded. (12:06) Victor Robles was part of a trio of Nationals to record four hits on Friday night. Josh Bell and Maikel Franco were the two others as Cesar Hernandez was not too far behind with three hits of his own. (17:55) Keibert Ruiz did not join the hit parade as he was 0 for 6 from the plate. We discuss the young catcher's offensive struggles and what his workload is like so far this season. (23:10) Aaron Sanchez earned the win as he made it through 5 IP. However, our guy Paolo Espino yet again was assigned mop-up duty in the 9th. In between, four other relievers took the mound to preserve the comfortable victory.
