This week Granger interviews Tony Wood about the doctrines of grace, human depravity, and God’s sovereignty in salvation. Tony emphasizes that salvation is entirely the work of God—humans are spiritually dead and unable to seek Him without divine intervention. He explains how this challenges modern views of autonomy, particularly in American culture, and often stirs discomfort around the idea of God’s control over all things, including evil and salvation. Despite the tension between God’s sovereignty and human responsibility, Tony affirms that Scripture teaches both. He shares his personal journey from thinking he chose God to realizing that God had chosen him, seeing this truth consistently throughout the biblical narrative—from creation to Christ to the birth of the Church. This theological shift profoundly changed Tony’s preaching. Instead of crafting messages around felt needs or cultural trends, he now practices expositional preaching—teaching the Bible verse by verse and letting Scripture shape the message. Granger and Tony agree that true church health begins in the pulpit, where God’s Word—not style, music, or production—must remain central. They encourage believers to seek churches that faithfully and deeply preach the Bible.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Tony and Bre Wood, hosts of the Date Night with the Woods podcast, join E.Z., Mark, and Oscar to discuss their new book on marriage and family. The idea for the book came after a publisher, inspired by their podcast, suggested they put their insights into writing. Writing the book deepened their understanding of marriage's sanctifying nature, allowing them to laugh at past challenges and reflect on how God uses marriage for holiness rather than just happiness. The guys, along with Tony and Bre, talk about marriage as a tool for sanctification, fulfilling God's call for companionship and mutual growth. They encourage couples to view marriage as a lifelong friendship, prioritizing the needs of their spouse and embracing selflessness over personal gain. Bre highlights the importance of discipleship for wives, urging women to seek guidance from older, godly mentors. Feminist ideals often conflict with biblical roles, creating competition instead of support within marriages. Bre and Tony share how scripture and discipleship transformed their own relationship.Selfishness undermines marriage. Couples are encouraged to say something encouraging to their spouse daily, celebrate small victories, and build a framework for forgiveness. Intentionality is key—valuable relationships require work, prayer, and scripture. Tony shared a personal practice of writing thoughts about his day on his arm to share with Bre, illustrating the importance of thoughtfulness. They also stress the importance of conflict resolution, addressing issues like finances or resentment constructively and without delay. For wives who feel their efforts won't matter unless their husband changes, Bre advises looking to Christ's example of love. Husbands should model sacrificial leadership, laying down their lives in small ways to reflect Christ's love. Obedience to God is central. Repentance, confession, and grace can heal even deeply strained marriages, with the gospel at the center of reconciliation. Tony and Bre highlight how marriage impacts parenting and family life. A gospel-centered marriage provides a solid foundation for raising children. Bre shares how modeling forgiveness and scriptural authority has positively shaped their children's understanding of family and faith. Apologizing to children when wrong demonstrates what it means to live with God at the center.God's grace will sustain through weaknesses, and the guys, along with Tony and Bre, encourage couples to lean on the gospel, community, and Christ's transformative power in every aspect of marriage and family life.Send us a textThanks for listening! Dr. Wood joins BI analyst Sam Fazeli to address the disconnect between market expectations for its future drugs in the context of GSK's R&D strategy and technology leverage. Peter Dutton has released the costings for the Coalition's nuclear energy plan, proposing to build seven nuclear power stations at the sites of current coal plants. The Coalition says its plan would be markedly cheaper than Labor's plan to convert to mostly renewable energy by 2050. But a report from CSIRO and the Australian Energy Market Operator suggests that renewables have the lowest cost range of any new electricity generation. Added to this, debates around energy prices are only going to get bigger as the 2025 federal election draws closer. And in the end, is the ultimate goal of emissions reduction getting lost in the clamour for cheaper bills? On this podcast, Grattan's energy experts Tony Wood and Alison Reeve provide incisive commentary on the state of energy policy - and they argue that Australia shouldn't jump to Plan B anytime soon. Under the International Paris Agreement, Australia has committed to reduce its emissions to 43 per cent below 2005 levels by 2030. But the government is not currently on track to meet these levels. It's led some members of the Opposition to call for Australia to abandon the Paris Agreement. But even if Australia can't meet these ambitious targets it has set, should it abandon the agreement? In this podcast, Kat Clay and energy expert Tony Wood discuss why Australia is not on track to meet their emissions reduction targets, whether we should abandon the Paris Agreement, and the policies that can help close this emissions gap in the coming years. We start this week's show with Tennant taking on tech titan Elon Musk by combining his two great two loves in SPREADSHEETS and SPACE to cast some serious shade on Musk's plans around Mars colonisation, with hot takes on implications for Hydrogen along the way.Your intrepid hosts also revisit the latest quarterly update from the National Greenhouse Gas Inventory for Dec 2022 and try as Frankie might to induce sleepiness a la BBC shipping forecast readouts with the numbers, no dice! TLDR: emissions reduction flatlined and there is cause for concern that the rollout of energy transition infrastructure is nowhere near fast enough! And what about our friendly neighborhood Cinderella, Energy Efficiency? Not getting enough attention. Our deep dive this week is a GAS! We unpack the hot-off-the-press Grattan Institute report ‘Getting off gas: why, how, and who should pay?' brought to us by authors Tony Wood, Alison Reeve and Esther Suckling. We had many things to say on the report's many insights and recommendations! If this paper piques your interest, you are likely to find these golden nuggets in our back catalogue diverting:On the future of gas in the EU - “EU academy adjudicates hydrogen vs. electrification smackdown!”On learning rates - “Ka-ching! Act now for huge learning rate savings!”On gas transition in Australia - “Infrastructure Victoria presents: A Very December 2021 Gas Report”On transport of hydrogen - “Elementary, my dear IRENA: Hydrogen transport”Frankie's One More Thing is offsets redux! Revisiting the subject of our second ever episode, the Voluntary Carbon Markets Integrity Initiative have finally finalised and launched their Claims Code of Practice.Tennant's One More Thing is: are clean trade negotiations between EU and US on brink of collapse?  With some content harking back to our episode on Climate Clubs, the approach to encourage clean steel and aluminium from the US  has received a not-so-friendly reception from the EU. Where to from here? Hopefully not a trade war! Luke's One More Thing is the most recent two episodes from one of our favourite podcasts, Origin Story, which takes on climate change denial. In this episode, partners Rohan Doyle and Tony Wood discuss bargaining dynamics arising from changes to union and employer leverage following the Secure Jobs, Better Pay reforms, and share practical suggestions for how employers should approach bargaining planning in this new world of IR. Many employers will be focussed on securing enterprise agreements which minimise the potential perils of multi-employer bargaining or arbitration by the Fair Work Commission. How should employers prepare for these changes? What's more important now? And what are some of the key preparatory steps that employers can take to enhance their bargaining outcomes? Rohan and Tony consider all of this and more in an enlightening conversation covering the priorities for pre-bargaining planning (how much and how long in advance is desirable?), the importance of securing employee trust and engagement, being ready for compulsory arbitration by the Commission, what unions do well and where employers can do better. This episode has lots of practical tips and insights, including for experienced IR practitioners.

One tool which gives us an insight into electricity prices for the next financial year is the default market offer (DMO), a draft of which has recently been released by the Australian Energy Regulator. The DMO suggests electricity prices will rise by an average of 20 per cent in the coming year. In this podcast, Tony Wood, Energy and Climate Program Director, and Alison Reeve, Energy and Climate Deputy Program Director, discuss what the DMO means for electricity prices and consumers, in a conversation facilitated by Esther Suckling, Associate.

You reach a point in your life where you finally realize, who you are is more important than what you think you're supposed to be in the world. That's when you take the stand to say, "Sorry, not sorry," and then write an amazing song about that exact subject. Drawing upon her own talent and DNA as daughter of Maurice Gibb - one third of BeeGees fame - Samantha Gibb, shares how she has come to a space where showing her true colors as a musical talent, and as an authentic person is the only way to put Good Lovin, out in the world. About Samantha Samantha was born and raised in Miami Beach, Florida and now lives in Nashville, TN. Sam's father, legendary Maurice Gibb of the Bee Gees, vastly influenced her life and her music. She has said, “Growing up watching my father and my uncles really set the bar for what kind of musician and songwriter I wanted to be”. In 2004, after her father passed away, Sam partnered with Lazaro Rodriguez, creating M.E.G. Records/M.E.G. Productions (M.E.G. being the acronym for her father's initials, Maurice Ernest Gibb). “It was a way for me to keep my dad's personal studio alive and making sure the instruments would always be played.” Samantha has said. In 2007, along with her band and studio, Sam relocated to Nashville, TN. Upon arriving, Sam began to work on a music documentary called “A Nashville State of Mind”. The film was inspired by the musicians she met and the evolving music scene she encountered while living in East Nashville at that time. “A Nashville State of Mind” was accepted into over 15 film festivals and won the best international music doc in 2008 at the LA/NY International film and music festival. In 2010, her band, Samantha Gibb and The Cartel, crossed the pond for her first U.K. tour to promote her album “Wrong Side”. Later that year, they followed up with an acoustic tour of the East Coast. In February 2012, Sam performed at the Hard Rock Live in Ft. Lauderdale with her Uncle, Barry Gibb. With great success from the show, she continued to tour with her uncle on his Mythology Tour where she performed in Australia, New Zealand, the UK, Ireland and North America until 2014. In the beginning of 2015, Sam sang with again with her uncle at the Miami Beach Centennial show in Miami Beach, FL. In 2016, Sam began to work on a tribute album for her father and her uncles (Robin Gibb, Barry Gibb, and Andy Gibb), titled “The Gibb Collective”. The song titled “Please Don't Turn Out the Lights” brought together her family, including the eldest children of Barry, Maurice, Robin, and Andy. The album included covers of their music with a different style and new flavor. The album was released in 2017 for Father's Day. In 2021, she collaborated with award winning country singer-songwriter Kyle Jacobs on her single, “Spiraling" and later that year she released “Christmas in a Small Town” which she wrote with Kyle Jacobs and another award winning songwriter, Tony Wood. In July of this year she released her newest singles “Good Lovin'” and followed up with “Sorry, Not Sorry” at the end of September. Samantha's writing is unique and has a versatile musical sound that blends perfectly with her sultry vocals. Opening Song: To the Table (https://open.spotify.com/track/0qriSYsqivuTCm0J8mYICj?si=f04fe92d29f54da5) by Jonathan Smith, Tony Wood, and Zach Williams Lyrics: Hear the voice of love that's calling There's a chair that waits for you And a friend who understands Everything you're going through But you keep standing at a distance In the shadows of your shame But there's a light of hope that's shining Won't you come and take your place And bring it all to the table It's nothing He ain't seen before For all your sin all your sorrow And your sadness There's a Savior and He calls Bring it all to the table He can see the weight you carry The fears that hold your heart But through the cross you've been forgiven You're accepted as you are So bring it all to the table It's nothing He ain't seen before For all your trials all your worries And your burdens There's a Savior and He calls Bring it all to the table Bring it all You can bring it all Come on in take your place There's no one who's turned away All you sinners all you saints Come right in and find your grace Passage: 1 After this the Lord appointed seventy-two others and sent them on ahead of him, two by two, into every town and place where he himself was about to go. 2 And he said to them, “The harvest is plentiful, but the laborers are few. Therefore pray earnestly to the Lord of the harvest to send out laborers into his harvest. 3 Go your way; behold, I am sending you out as lambs in the midst of wolves. 4 Carry no moneybag, no knapsack, no sandals, and greet no one on the road. 5 Whatever house you enter, first say, ‘Peace be to this house!' 6 And if a son of peace is there, your peace will rest upon him. But if not, it will return to you. 7 And remain in the same house, eating and drinking what they provide, for the laborer deserves his wages. Do not go from house to house. 8 Whenever you enter a town and they receive you, eat what is set before you. 9 Heal the sick in it and say to them, ‘The kingdom of God has come near to you.' 10 But whenever you enter a town and they do not receive you, go into its streets and say, 11 ‘Even the dust of your town that clings to our feet we wipe off against you. Nevertheless know this, that the kingdom of God has come near.' 12 I tell you, it will be more bearable on that day for Sodom than for that town. 13 “Woe to you, Chorazin! Woe to you, Bethsaida! For if the mighty works done in you had been done in Tyre and Sidon, they would have repented long ago, sitting in sackcloth and ashes. 14 But it will be more bearable in the judgment for Tyre and Sidon than for you. 15 And you, Capernaum, will you be exalted to heaven? You shall be brought down to Hades. 16 “The one who hears you hears me, and the one who rejects you rejects me, and the one who rejects me rejects him who sent me.” 17 The seventy-two returned with joy, saying, “Lord, even the demons are subject to us in your name!” 18 And he said to them, “I saw Satan fall like lightning from heaven. 19 Behold, I have given you authority to tread on serpents and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy, and nothing shall hurt you. 20 Nevertheless, do not rejoice in this, that the spirits are subject to you, but rejoice that your names are written in heaven.” (Luke 10:1–20 ESV) Musical Reflection: Harp Meditation No. 3 by Gretchen Kirby Reflection Notes: This harp reflection features rich, full chords with a strong melody. The tension between major and minor chords reflects the challenges and triumphs of daily life. Prayer: Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors; And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory, forever. Amen.
