At the time of his final flight, Frederick was an ambitious, healthy, hardworking, and optimistic young person. On the evening of Saturday October 21st, 1978, at 6:15 Fred Valentich left Moorabbin airport and headed west, crossing Port Philip Bay on the way to King Island. Fred's flight started without incident.  After about 6 minutes over the open water, just after 7pm, Fred called Steve on the radio and asked if there was “any known traffic below 5000 feet?” The reply was “no known traffic.” Fred confirmed that he was in an altitude of 4500 feet and crossing Bass Strait. Only 7 seconds after confirming he could not identify the “thing” Fred reported, “Melbourne, Delta Sierra Juliet, it is not an aircraft…it is…” Almost immediately after stating his intentions Fred radioed, “Ah, Melbourne, that's strange aircraft is hovering on top of me again, it is hovering, and it's not an aircraft!” Steve, with all his experience, now had to try to help a junior pilot try to navigate through engine trouble over a body of water while avoiding an unknown aircraft as the sun is setting. I don't envy him. Before Steve had time to process all the data points and provide guidance, Fred radioed and said, “Delta Sierra Juliet, Melbourne…” but then stop talking mid-sentence. All that can be heard is a chattering rattling metallic sound. It lasts for 17 seconds and then stops. Steve never heard anything quite like it in all his years of aviation. Steve tried repeatedly to reach Fred, but he was gone. Fred was never heard from again. What happened to Fred Valentich? On 21st of October, 1978, 20 year old Frederick Valentich is flying a Cessna 182L light aeroplane from Moorabbin Airport to King Island. Not long after commencing the over water section of the flight, between Cape Otway and King Island, Valentich reports to the air traffic controller seeing a craft with 4 bright lights passing over his plane. The unusual craft returns and Valentich reports it behaving strangely by playing some sort of game with him, and travelling at such high speeds he could not identify how fast. Valentich reports that the craft is a long shape and has green lights. The conversation lasts 6 minutes before he declares that the object is not an aircraft. Suddenly all radio contact with Valentich’s aircraft is lost and he and his cessna disappear never to be heard from again. Despite a massive rescue operation, no evidence is found that would suggest what happened to Valentich or his plane.

Mr Valentich told Melbourne air traffic control he was being followed by a long metallic, unidentified aircraft with four bright lights which at times moved at high speed or orbited above his plane, ­before reporting his engine was failing. "It seems to me that he's playing some sort of game," he told air traffic control. "He's flying over me two, three times at a time at speeds I could not identify. "Melbourne - Delta Sierra Juliet. It's not an aircraft." Critics claimed Mr Valentich was either disorientated and crashed or may have even faked his disappearance. Investigation Five years after Valentich's aircraft went missing, an engine cowl flap was found on Flinders Island. In July 1983, the Bureau of Air Safety Investigation asked the Royal Australian Navy Research Laboratory (RANRL) about the likelihood that the cowl flap might have "travelled" to its ultimate position from the region where the aircraft disappeared. The bureau noted that "the part has been identified as having come from a Cessna 182 aircraft between a certain range of serial numbers" which included Valentich's aircraft. In last week’s episode, The Final Flight, we looked at the tragic story of Australian Training Corp pilot Fred Valentich and his mysterious disappearance one evening in October 1978. In a famous last communication between Fred and Air Traffic Control it appeared that Fred was being tracked by a large UFO just prior to his disappearance. If, as some believe, Fred had in fact fabricated the event, it has been suggested that the Stephen Spielberg’s Close Encounters of the Third Kind may have served as a possible source of inspiration. Yet, only 6 months previously something far more fantastical had occurred that would no doubt have been noted by Fred, a young man with a keen interest in UFOs and the hunt for Alien life...
