Disappearance of a pilot over Bass Strait, Australia
POPULARITY
October 21, 1978. Cape Otway, Australia. After leaving on a seemingly routine training flight in a Cessna 182 aircraft, 20-year old pilot Frederick Valentich vanishes without explanation over Bass Strait. During a radio transmission, Valentich describes seeing an unidentified flying object and his final words are: “It's hovering and it's not an aircraft”. When eyewitnesses report seeing strange things in the sky that night, speculation mounts that Valentich's disappearance might have been the result of an alien encounter. For our final Halloween-themed episode of “The Path Went Chilly” this month, we will be covering our very first story involving potential UFO involvement and explore whether this caused a pilot to vanish forever. The Frederick Valentich disappearance remains one of Australia's most enigmatic aviation mysteries. On October 21, 1978, 20-year-old pilot Frederick Valentich took off from Moorabbin Airport in Melbourne, intending to fly to King Island. During the flight, he radioed air traffic control, reporting an unidentified flying object (UFO) hovering above him. Distressed and describing strange movements by the object, Valentich's communication abruptly ceased, and he, along with his Cessna 182 aircraft, vanished without a trace. Despite extensive search efforts, no wreckage or sign of Valentich has ever been found, leaving the events of that fateful night shrouded in unanswered questions and enduring speculation about the possible encounter with extraterrestrial beings. ----------------- Visit us on the web- http://www.asylum817.com ----------------- to support the show, check us out on Patreon- http://www.patreon.com/asylum817 ----------------- DISTROKID AFFILIATE LINK: https://www.distrokid.com/vip/seven/3128872 ----------------- Want to promote your brand, YouTube channel, Etsy page, charity, event or podcast on the show? In 1978 Frederick Valentich disappeared over Bass Straight whilst flying a Cessna Aircraft and reporting to air traffic control that he was being buzzed by a UFO. This incident has haunted author/investigator George Simpson for 45 years. Born in 1958 the same year Frederick was born. George believes he saw the plane just prior to its disappearance. He has now released his recollections and research in a book entitled Nothing on Radar which is now available from Amazon. Jay Katz and Aspasia conduct a lively conversation with George which includes some rare insights that were not mentioned in the book.
Guest George Simpson witnessed the initial part of the final flight of Frederick Valentich on October 21st, 1978 from his family home in Beaumaris. This led him into deep research and his recent release of his book, Nothing on Radar: The Valentich Mystery.Show Notes

It was Oct. 21, 1978, and the sun was setting on the Australian horizon. At 6:19 p.m., a young pilot named Frederick Valentich took off in a rented Cessna 182L from Moorabbin Airport in Victoria. He was en route to King Island, a 130-mile journey over a body of water known as the Bass Strait. The Strait is famous for its difficult flying conditions, but on this night, the skies were clear and the winds calm. Valentich was eager to reach his destination, where his friends awaited, ready to dine on fresh seafood along the water's edge. Sadly, Valentich never made that dinner date, nor any thereafter. At 7:06 p.m., he called into Air Flight Service, citing an unidentified flying object maneuvering around him. Neither Valentich nor his aircraft were ever found. Krysta, Laura and Dean discuss some mysterious disappearances but first Krysta lays out some interesting facts about salamanders. After we discuss these freaky amphibians we look into some odd disappearances including Frederick Valentich; a 20 year old Australian pilot in training who went missing while reporting an unknown craft that Air Traffic Control couldn't locate, Owen Parfitt a 60 year old mostly paralyzed man that simply went missing one afternoon; the tale of author Ambrose Bierce who vanished after heading to Mexico to serve in Pancho Villa's revolution; or the tale of Angela Hammond who was abducted by a stranger in a pickup truck from a Clinton, Missouri phone booth, and the disappearance of the Sandringhams on a battlefield in Turkey. All these and more we discuss on this episode before we hit 100!
The strange disappearance of pilot Fredrick Valentich in 1978, is one of aviation's greatest unsolved mysteries. In the episode, we examine the mystery, including the bizarre radio transmissions from Valentich, which include the chilling line, “…it's not an aircraft.” Was it a tragic accident, a hoax gone wrong, or a close encounter with a UFO? Could it be something else completely unexpected? Join us as we fly into mystery. Be sure to check out our HAUNTED TALKS tees & hoodies!

This week we put the finishing touches on our three-part series about UFOs in Australia by diving deeper into the infamous disappearance of Australian amateur pilot Frederick Valentich. 43 years ago at 6:19 PM local time, Frederick Valentich took off in a rented Cessna 182L from Moorabbin Airport in Victoria. He was en route to King Island, a 130-nautical-mile journey over a body of water known as the Bass Strait. Although the strait is famous for its difficult flying conditions - on this night, the skies were clear and the winds calm. Valentich was eager to make his destination, a flight he had taken before - to score some coveted fresh seafood and relax with friends. Sadly, he would never make it to his destination. Mere minutes after take off his trip was interrupted by a strange Unidentified Flying Object which he called into air traffic control to report...the exchange transcript becomes more and more eery as you read it. The last paragraph of back and forth reads: 7:12:04 Airtraffic Control "Roger. What are your intentions?" 7:12:09 Valentich: "My intentions are—ah… to go to King Island—Ah, Melbourne, that strange aircraft is hovering on top of me again //open microphone for two seconds// it is hovering and it's not an aircraft." 7:12:22 Valentich: "Delta Sierra Juliet" 7:12:28 Valentich: "Delta Sierra Juliet—Melbourne" //open microphone for 17 seconds// [A very strange pulsed noise is also audible during this transmission.] End of official DoT transcript To this day no wreckage has ever been recovered and the mysterious disappearance of the young Frederick Valentich remains unsolved. In this episode, we go over possible theories (including the most plausible non-paranormal), and tease some future episode topics regarding some of the other most famous cases of Australia, New Zealand and Tasmania. Buckle up, get out your flight school manuals, and your aviator sunglasses and let's get ready for take off. Thank you so much for listening, don't forget to tell your friends to check us out, and as always... Come along for this week's episode, the disappearance of Frederick Valentich! Way back in 1978, Valentich flew off into the sunset over the Bass Straight near Melbourne Australia. What happened to him? Was he abducted by aliens, or the planet Venus? Or perhaps it was something a little more mundane in nature. Find out in this week's episode! You can follow the show on twitter @alienconpod. We also have a facebook page.
On October 21, 1978, Australian amateur pilot Frederick Valentich disappeared off of the southern coast of Australia while attempting to fly across the Bass Strait to nearby King Island, located a short distance from the Australian state of Tasmania. Valentich's final communication to Australian air traffic control said that he was being pursued by a metallic-looking flying object that appeared to be following his every move from a few hundred feet above his Cessna airplane. In the communication, Valentich would confirm that the object was "not an aircraft." Did Valentich really see a UFO on that fateful day in October, and if so, was this UFO the culprit in the mysterious disappearance of Australian amateur pilot Frederick Valentich?
As we wrap up our coverage of the Frederick Valentich story in Part 3 of our series, we'll continue our conversation with Melbourne resident Chris Tyler about his research into the case and other possibly related UFO incidents around the same time and area. We'll also examine the Australian Department of Transport accident report's remaining findings and discuss its conclusions. As you begin to reach your own conclusions, it's essential to keep several factors in mind which make the usual mundane explanations seem inadequate. The high number of independent sightings of aerial phenomena occurring in proximity to the disappearance suggests Valentich wasn't alone in witnessing it. The distance a Cessna cowling was found from a potential crash site and the lack of definitive markings makes its discovery inconclusive. Even if the cowling did come from Valentich's plane, it still doesn't account for what caused him to ditch, let alone other missing debris and Valentich himself. Perhaps the most surprising revelation comes from the summary of the report itself. Rather than dismissing the possibility of a UFO entanglement, an official government statement lists it as one of four likeliest scenarios. Remember that Valentich himself never suggested he interacted with a UFO in his last transmission, despite being painted as obsessed with them by his skeptics. When these factors and more are taken together, it's no wonder this incident is one of the most baffling and tragic in the phenomenon's history and leaves us all to wonder, what happened to Frederick Valentich and where did he go? Did Australian pilot Frederick Valentich disappear or crash due to an attack by a UFO? This week on Solvable Mysteries we investigate the bizarre and unsolved disappearance of Australian pilot Frederick Valentich, whose flight on October 21, 1978 led to a disappearance shortly after he radioed he was being followed and buzzed by a strange green spacecraft while flying in South Australia. This was in or around Bass Strait, Cape Otway, between Melbourne and King Island. On this week's show we review a case that is famous in the files of notable UFO encounters, the disappearance of Frederick Valentich in a Cessna 182. Frederick was an amateur pilot who aspired to be a commercial pilot, and to join the RAAF (Royal Australian Air Force) as well. Unfortunately, his skills were not yet up to task (he failed multiple qualification exams), but Frederick had over 150 flying hours and was very enthusiastic about flying. This wasn't the only thing Valentich was enthusiastic for -- he had a very strong interest in UFO's and possible alien life, and was obsessed with encounters the public, and especially aviators, may have had with this phenomenon. He came from a family that had some history of claims of meeting extraterrestrials, and coincidentally or not, it appears he may have had a run-in himself with a UFO, or at least his conversation with air traffic controllers implies he wanted them to think so.We examine this controversial case and weigh the evidence -- Was Frederick Valentich a victim of a UFO encounter gone wrong, or did he die in the act of faking such an encounter? Or was the entire thing a misunderstanding of a fatal flight condition, Frederick Valentich mistaking stars spiraling above him as an alien spaceship, while he slowly crashed into the ocean, a victim of vertigo and his own inability to fly in no-visibility conditions? Please Subscribe to our YouTube channel to make sure you don't miss new episodes of the Solvable Mysteries Podcast, we upload on a weekly basis.
When the facts about a paranormal event yield no more answers, investigators and the public alike tend to turn their attention to the experiencer's character to ascertain its authenticity. So what kind of person was Frederick Valentich? A once-lost aircraft accident report from Australia's Department of Transport, which resurfaced in 2012, has shed some light on Valentich's behavior and state of mind leading up to the moment of his disappearance. Through extensive interviews with his family, friends, associates, and the flight personnel he came into contact with, a picture emerges of Valentich's disposition. Although there were some puzzling actions and statements by the young pilot, overall, he appeared to be a dedicated and serious student of aviation. Yet if a paranormal cause of his disappearance is off the table of consideration, then the answer must lie in one of his shortcomings, right? This has led to speculation that Valentich intended to abscond with the aircraft and start a new life, or he planned a mysterious suicide, or that as a UFO enthusiast, he simply mistook stars and planets for a UFO and crashed trying to avoid it. As we delve further into the details and analysis from the official report in part two of our series, we're joined by listener and lifelong Melbourne resident Chris Tyler. Being quite familiar with the case, Chris will lend his own insight into the mystery and illustrate this enchanting Australian backdrop's prevailing attitudes and characteristics. On Saturday, October 21, 1978, at 6:19 p.m., 20-year-old Frederick Valentich took off from Moorabbin Airport just south of Melbourne, Australia, for what was supposed to be a routine training and pleasure flight over Bass Strait to King Island. A serious student aviator, Valentich had been flying for two years and had accumulated over 150 hours of solo flying time in his goal to one day become a commercial airline pilot. Although rated for night flying by instrument, the sun was still up, and with clear visibility and good weather, there was no reason Valentich shouldn’t have easily completed this trip, which he’d taken several times before. However, just over halfway through the flight at 7:06 p.m., Valentich contacted Melbourne Flight Service Unit and reported seeing an unidentified craft above him, traveling at high speed and shining four bright lights. Valentich would radio back a few minutes later that it didn’t appear to be any known aircraft, and now it had even more unusual characteristics: it was long, shiny metallic, and a green light was emanating from it. Even more unsettling, this craft he described was deliberately toying with him as it orbited above while his plane’s engine was sputtering. At 7:11 p.m., the last statement anyone would hear from Valentich would be that the object was still hovering and that it was not an aircraft. Valentich and his plane had vanished at that moment, but whether it was an elaborate hoax, a deliberate crash, or merely a misidentification combined with a mechanical failure, no investigation has been able to determine. What is not in doubt is that the case of Frederick Valentich remains one of Australia’s biggest aviation mysteries, if not in all of UFO lore. On Monday, Oct 22, 1973, the Ohio Lancaster Eagle-Gazette carried a most unusual headline. “Helicopter Nearly Tangles With UFO” the story read, which recounted a harrowing tale of an Army Captain, Lawrence Coyne, and three other servicemen who had the fright of their lives a few days earlier, while flying back to Cleveland after a routine medical examination. 1973 was one of the most significant years in the history of UFO sightings, and what has become known as "The Coyne Encounter" was one of the many that occurred that year which caused it to be so memorable. This week, we explore this notable incident in-depth, as we look at the primary narrative, what additional witnesses say they saw, and how skeptics attempted to solve this lasting UFO mystery. On 21st of October, 1978, 20 year old Frederick Valentich is flying a Cessna 182L light aeroplane from Moorabbin Airport to King Island. Not long after commencing the over water section of the flight, between Cape Otway and King Island, Valentich reports to the air traffic controller seeing a craft with 4 bright lights passing over his plane. The unusual craft returns and Valentich reports it behaving strangely by playing some sort of game with him, and travelling at such high speeds he could not identify how fast. Valentich reports that the craft is a long shape and has green lights. The conversation lasts 6 minutes before he declares that the object is not an aircraft. Suddenly all radio contact with Valentich’s aircraft is lost and he and his cessna disappear never to be heard from again. Despite a massive rescue operation, no evidence is found that would suggest what happened to Valentich or his plane.

On October 21, 1978, a 20-year-old Frederick Valentich rented a single engine plane out of Victoria’s Moorabbin Airport with plans of heading to Tasmania’s King Island to catch seafood. But things took a terrifying turn when he noticed he was being followed by another aircraft. It has been 40 years since the young Aussie pilot disappeared over the Bass Strait and in that time no one has come any closer to finding out what happened to him.The only clue left behind was a radio conversation between him and Melbourne Airflight Service Controller, Steve Robey. It was 7pm when Valentich radioed in to ask if there were any known aircraft in the area, just after something zoomed overhead.Robey informed him that there was “no known traffic” in the area and inquired as to what type of plane it was.“I cannot affirm. It is four bright, it seems to me, like landing lights. The aircraft has just passed over me at least a thousand feet above,” Valentich said.As the transmission went on things got even more unnerving, with Valentich reporting that the mystery aircraft was “playing” with him.“It seems to me that he’s playing some sort of game,” he said.“He’s flying over me two, three times, at a time at speeds I could not identify.”The conversation continues with the controller trying to get more information about what the object actually is.Valentich describes it as long, metallic and with a green light. At one point the aircraft vanishes before suddenly reappearing on his other side. It’s at this point that Valentich says his final, terrifying words: “It is hovering and it is not an aircraft.”There is silence for 17 seconds before the transmission abruptly cuts off.An extensive search was conducted of the water and any surrounding land but Valentich nor any indication of a crash site was ever found.UFO enthusiasts suggest he was abducted by a UFO, while pilot's believe the inexperienced pilot was flying upside down and the lights he saw were his own reflections on the water before he crashed.Valentich had applied twice to the Royal Australian Air Force, and was rejected both times for inadequate educational experience. He was also studying to be a commercial pilot but had failed his examinations twice. He had also received several warnings, after flying once into a restricted zone in Sydney, and twice into clouds.Others point out that Valentich was perhaps suicidal and crashed his own plane and made up the UFO to create a story. Valentich was also known to have been studying UFOs previously and deathly scared that he would encounter one while flying.Adding to the mystery there were belated reports of a UFO sighting in Australia on the night of the disappearance.A farmer near Adelaide reportedly witnessed a 30m craft hovering over his property the morning after Valentich went missing. It is claimed the Cessna was stuck to the side of the craft, leaking oil. The farmer even scratched the plane’s registration number on to his tractor but never came forward with the information because he was ridiculed by the few friends he told. The farmer remains anonymous.Other witnesses claimed to have seen "an erratically moving green light in the sky" and in one instance a witnesses, located about 2km west of Apollo Bay, Victoria, stated that they saw a green light trailing or shadowing Valentich's plane, and that he was in a steep dive at the time.Search and Rescue crews tried to find his remains or that of his Cessna, but were unsuccessful at the time. Five years later, however, and engine cowel flap was located on the shores of Flinder's Island. In 1983, The Royal Australian Navy Research Laboratory confirmed the flap could have washed ashore on the island and that the part has been identified as having come from a Cessna 182 aircraft between a certain range of serial numbers which included Valentich's aircraft. It is not 100% proof, but it is very circumstantial. The only tangible thing that now remains is a small plague at Otway lighthouse commemorating his strange disappearance. We will be taking a short break over the holidays. Have a Merry Christmas and see you in the new year! See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

UFO Mystery: Vanished pilot's ominous prophecy Article link: https://m.dailymercury.com.au/news/fred-valentich-disappearance-mystery-of-pilots-las/3555028/ FORTY years since his baffling disappearance off the coast of Cape Otway, Victorian pilot Fred Valentich's fiancee has revealed an ominous conversation she shared with her boyfriend only a day earlier. Rhonda Rushton has spoken for the first time about his unsettling final words to her, admitting she has been unable to move on from the tragedy ever since. Ms Rushton said despite his plans to set a course across Bass Strait, the 20-year-old admitted he was fearful of flying over water. "I found that a bit strange," she said. "But it was clear he had some sort of gut feeling." Despite an extensive air and ground search, no trace of Mr Valentich or his plane were ever found after he took off from Moorabbin airport on October 21, 1978. But it would be the transcript of his final conversation with an air traffic controller that would confound investigators and spark one of Australia's most enduring aviation mysteries. Mr Valentich told Melbourne air traffic control he was being followed by a long metallic, unidentified aircraft with four bright lights which at times moved at high speed or orbited above his plane, before reporting his engine was failing. "It seems to me that he's playing some sort of game," he told air traffic control. "He's flying over me two, three times at a time at speeds I could not identify. "Melbourne - Delta Sierra Juliet. It's not an aircraft." Critics claimed Mr Valentich was either disorientated and crashed or may have even faked his disappearance. Investigation Five years after Valentich's aircraft went missing, an engine cowl flap was found on Flinders Island. In July 1983, the Bureau of Air Safety Investigation asked the Royal Australian Navy Research Laboratory (RANRL) about the likelihood that the cowl flap might have "travelled" to its ultimate position from the region where the aircraft disappeared. The bureau noted that "the part has been identified as having come from a Cessna 182 aircraft between a certain range of serial numbers" which included Valentich's aircraft. This week on Weird Crap in Australia, Matthew and Holly discuss the mysterious disappearance of pilot Frederick Valentich above Bass Strait. In 1978, Frederick Valentich went for a routine flight across Bass Strait. Shortly after 7 pm, Frederick reported seeing an unknown object 'playing' with him as he flew over the water. At 7:12 pm, the transmission cut out half-way through, and Frederick was never seen again. Was this the work of aliens, or something far more strange?Main Theme music – Kevin MacLeod "Slow Ticking Clock" – Kevin MacLeodUsed under a Creative Commons license.

Fred Valentich wanted to be a pilot. He also wanted to battle the aliens about to invade Earth. Did he? And did it cost him his life?
Richard Syrett speaks with an anomalist, ufologist, author, and broadcaster about the possible alien abduction of a young pilot off the coast of Australia in October 1978. Shortly after take-off, Frederick Valentich, the 21-year old pilot of a Cessna light aircraft reported that he saw a UFO hovering above him. A few moments later, Valentich … Continue reading 006 The Valentich Disappearance: Alien Abduction, Pilot Error? Suicide? →
4 MOST CREDIBLE ALIEN UFO ENCOUNTERS For those who believe that UFO’s and Alien encoutners are real, there’s still just so many questions that remain unanswered. Where’s the proof? and Why would they visit? For those that are skeptical, perhaps the following stories will change your mind. These are the 4 most credible alien UFO encounters. 4. Shaitan Mazar –Russia UFO Crash Known as the "Devil's Grave Yard", Shaitan Mazar is believed by locals to be a mystical place. For them, it holds a sacred stream that has mysterious healing properties, And in this case much more then that. On August 28, 1991, the Soviet Radar station caught site of an unusually large object entering their airspace. It was flying over the Caspian Sea and measured around 2,000 feet long and 300 feet wide. It was travelling at an altitude of 22, 000 feet with speeds of up to 600 mph. Unsure about the object and alarmed at the possibilities, the Soviets immediately issued an FIF or "friend or foe" signal, But there was no reply. They knew there were no scheduled test flights in the area and so they decided to deploy MIG-29 fighters to investigate. 3. The Valentich Incident At 20 years old, Frederick Valentich wanted to be a pilot. He tried several times to apply for a commercial license but failed, but despite that he never stopped trying. With 150 hours of flight time under his belt as well as being authorized to fly at night, he decided to take a rented single engine Cessna 182 on what would be a routine cargo trip from Moorabin, Australia to King Island. He informed the ground crew and told them he was picking up friends so he took 4 life vests with him. Shortly after sunset, at 6:19 PM, Valentich took off from the Airport and by 7:06 PM, he contacted Melbourne Flight Services to report an unusual aircraft was tailing him at around 4,500 feet. 2. Rendlesham Forest Known as Britain's Roswell, Rendlesham Forest sits just outside Suffolk, England. This place is no stranger to mysterious lights and UFOs but nothing compares to what happened between December 26 & 28 in 1980. United states air force personnel occupied the Royal air Force Woodbridge during the time, and at about 3 AM on the 26th, a security personnel reported seeing beams of light near the forest. Initially they thought it might be a downed aircraft so they sought a request to check it out. USAF Personnel, Ed Cabansag, Jim Penniston and John Burroughs drove to check it out and once they had eyes on it realized it wasn’t a downed craft, but a bright glowing, metallic object with colored lights around it. 1. Japan Airlines flight 1628 Japan Airlines Flight 1628 was a routine route for Captain Terauchi and his crew of two. It was 1986 and The captain was flying a Boeing 747 cargo plane filled with wine over Eastern Alaska at an altitude of 35,000 feet. The plane was on autopilot and they were currently in a unique area where to the right of the plane was an afterglow of the sunset while to the left side it was all dark. BY 5:09 PM, the Anchorage Air Route Traffic Control established radar contact with the plane and asked it to head to Talkeetna. The copilot answered the call and obliged, turning the plane left 15 degrees. Captain Terauchi was sitting on the left side of the cockpit and when the plane did this maneuver, that's when he first noticed it. Alien UFO Encounters are so fascinating for many reasons. If the day comes when there is definitive proof that they are in fact real, then it will force every single person on the planet to rethink not just the systems we’ve set in place as a society, but also the very nature of our entire existence.

October 21, 1978. Cape Otway, Australia. After leaving on a seemingly routine training flight in a Cessna 182 aircraft, 20-year old pilot Frederick Valentich vanishes without explanation over Bass Strait. During a radio transmission, Valentich describes seeing an unidentified flying object and his final words are: “It’s hovering and it’s not an aircraft”. When eyewitnesses report seeing strange things in the sky that night, speculation mounts that Valentich’s disappearance might have been the result of an alien encounter. For our final Halloween-themed episode of “The Trail Went Cold” this month, we will be covering our very first story involving potential UFO involvement and explore whether this caused a pilot to vanish forever. Special thanks to Cambo, host of the True Crime Island podcast for providing the voice of Frederick Valentich in this episode. What do you think when you look down upon an anthill? Do you see ants as simple pests, picnic Invaders that can ruin a Summer's day of fun? Or perhaps you don't consider them at all? Ants are simply ants and don't require consideration. What would be the thoughts of a civilization far removed from our own, one that has unraveled the mysteries of interstellar travel, towards humans? Hundreds of people have claimed of being abducted by intelligent creatures from beyond our own solar system. Taken for experiments or given messages and portents for them to relay to their fellow humans. But what about those humans who never came back? Few of the cases involving complete disappearances where UFOs were present are well documented or have reliable supporting evidence. One case happened on the southern tip of Australia in 1978. This case file join the Gruesome Twosome of Braden and Dan as they take to the skies Down Under exploring the Valentich Disappearance.
