While the young lads Saints at the end, the Cats could never quite hit parity in their comeback, with the men from Moorabbin deserved victors by 7 points. Next up, a potential banana-peel game against Richmond, in the final-ever Maddie's Match. This week's episode is brought to you by Ticketverse: Get premium seats at Marvel Stadium's Medallion Club for St Kilda games, with exclusive access to fine dining, bars, and more! At the time of his final flight, Frederick was an ambitious, healthy, hardworking, and optimistic young person. On the evening of Saturday October 21st, 1978, at 6:15 Fred Valentich left Moorabbin airport and headed west, crossing Port Philip Bay on the way to King Island. Fred's flight started without incident. After about 6 minutes over the open water, just after 7pm, Fred called Steve on the radio and asked if there was “any known traffic below 5000 feet?” The reply was “no known traffic.” Fred confirmed that he was in an altitude of 4500 feet and crossing Bass Strait. Only 7 seconds after confirming he could not identify the “thing” Fred reported, “Melbourne, Delta Sierra Juliet, it is not an aircraft…it is…” Almost immediately after stating his intentions Fred radioed, “Ah, Melbourne, that's strange aircraft is hovering on top of me again, it is hovering, and it's not an aircraft!” Steve, with all his experience, now had to try to help a junior pilot try to navigate through engine trouble over a body of water while avoiding an unknown aircraft as the sun is setting. I don't envy him. Before Steve had time to process all the data points and provide guidance, Fred radioed and said, “Delta Sierra Juliet, Melbourne…” but then stop talking mid-sentence. All that can be heard is a chattering rattling metallic sound. It lasts for 17 seconds and then stops. Steve never heard anything quite like it in all his years of aviation. Steve tried repeatedly to reach Fred, but he was gone. Fred was never heard from again. What happened to Fred Valentich? We explore his case and that of the 2017 US Pentagon report citing unexplained flying objects over the US. Read the full blog here.In this podcast, Stuart Wemyss delves into the intriguing dynamics of property investment, challenging the conventional wisdom that blue-chip suburbs are always the safest bet. The episode begins by scrutinising misleading claims made by some buyers' agents, emphasising the importance of thorough due diligence in a market often lacking regulatory protection. The host addresses the recent boom in regional towns, exploring why seemingly secondary suburbs can outperform blue-chip counterparts.Drawing on extensive research and real-life examples, the podcast highlights the pitfalls of short-term performance data and the significance of focusing on long-term investment fundamentals. Through a comparison of properties with rapid initial growth and consistent, moderate growth, the host demonstrates the lasting benefits of investment-grade locations. The episode also examines the surprising success stories of secondary suburbs like Moorabbin, Bentleigh, and McKinnon, shedding light on factors like the affordability ripple effect and gentrification. The discussion culminates in a crucial takeaway: while there may be short-term outliers, blue-chip, investment-grade locations are ultimately the least risky and more likely to withstand market fluctuations. For potential investors seeking a nuanced perspective on property investment, this podcast offers valuable insights and challenges preconceived notions, making it a must-listen in the ever-evolving landscape of real estate. If this episode resonated with you, please leave a rating on your favourite podcast platform. If you're into excellent croissants and inventive viennoiserie (think chocolate fondant croissants), you'll have heard of Penny for Pound. Pastry chef, Matilda Smith, and her partner in life and business, Ben Wilson opened their original hole in the wall shop in Richmond in 2018. They quickly garnered a following and Penny for Pound became the go-to spot for Richmond locals craving the perfect croissant fix. What's even better, croissants are baked three times daily, at 8am, 10am and midday, so if you time it right, you can get a warm, buttery croissant straight from the oven. The pair then went on to expand their business to a shop in Camberwell, a new space in Richmond when the old place was no longer available and a 100-square-meter HQ in Moorabbin's Morris Moor precinct. It's not all about the croissants anymore. With two production kitchens, a 130-seat cafe, and a dine-in menu that caters to every palate, it's an impressive operation. Matilda took me for a tour of the kitchens and then we sat down and had a chat about how she got into it, where she gets her inspiration and how much she loves teaching and passing on her knowledge. Matilda changes the menu monthly at Penny for Pound and coming up, there will be a chocolate fondant croissant for Valentine's Day and then hot cross buns: traditional, single origin chocolate, coffee using coffee from Axil and a sticky date and caramel. In addition, Matilda and Ben have opened Holla Gelato next door to the Moorabbin store and Matilda is working on a hot cross bun ice cream sandwich which will have burnt butter and salted honey gelato in the middle of a toasted hot cross bun. I'll leave that with you.

*Content Warning* discussions of death of police members. "You never forget the day your loved one graduates from the Academy." These are the words Carmel Arthur OAM spoke on National Police Remembrance Day in 2022; a solemn ritual of remembrance for police members, their families, colleagues and friends. Sergeant Gary Silk and Senior Constable Rodney Miller, Carmel's late husband, were ambushed and fatally shot during a 1998 stake-out at a potential robbery target in suburban Moorabbin. What came after this was a period of transformation and rebuilding for Carmel that can only be attributed to the very resilience of the human spirit; the ability to live again after loss. Prior to joining the Post Sentence Authority, in 2018 Carmel had a distinguished career holding key roles in both the public and private sectors. She is vastly experienced in the criminal justice system, knowledge she has gained over the past 20 years working with the courts, Corrections Victoria and Victoria Police. In 2015 Carmel was awarded “The most outstanding female administrator/practitioner” at the Australasian Council for Women and Policing Excellence Awards, and in In 2021, was awarded the Order of Australia Medal (OAM) in recognition of her service to the law. As a victim of crime, Carmel brings personal and insightful perspectives to the operation of the criminal justice system through her lived experience. She has worked extensively with many victims of crime to advocate for more inclusive and engaging treatment of victims and their families. She is a firm believer in the giving of unwavering support to those whose suffering was acquired on the job - that "no one can be left behind", and that in our remembrance, "our memory of the person, the life, the professional and the legacy they leave behind – will never die." --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/police-veterans-vic/message

When Sergeant Gary Silk and Senior Constable Rod Miller pulled over a blue Hyundai in Moorabbin in 1998 while on armed robbery stake-out duty they had no inkling they were about to be ambushed. Their murders sparked a two year investigation and the conviction of two men. One Jason Roberts, who always maintained his innocence, was eventually granted a retrial and in 2022 was acquitted. The murders, the investigation and the legal aftermath is one of the most controversial and tragic cases in Australia's history. Jason Roberts, 41 years old, was recently freed for the first time in twenty two years by the Supreme Court of Victoria. He was seventeen years old when two police officers, Sergeant Gary Silk and Senior Constable Rodney Miller were shot and murdered on Cochranes Road, Moorabbin, Victoria. Roberts was one of two who were convicted of the murders all those years ago. It's a very infamous case in Australia, and a very complicated one. We are joined today by Adam Cooper, journalist at The Age and The Sydney Morning Herald, who is here to help us break down the jury's acquittal of Jason Roberts.CREDITS:Host: Meshel Laurie.
