My guest for this episode is historian and filmmaker Dean Bertram. Dean's current project is The Man Who Invented Flying Saucers, a documentary about the relationship between science fiction pioneer Raymond A. Palmer and the writer Richard Shaver, whose stories about his encounters with terrifying subterranean beings called Deros captivated readers in the pages of the magazine Amazing Stories (which Palmer edited at the time) in the 1940's. The ‘Shaver Mysteries' as they came to be known would also set the stage for the emergence of the UFO phenomenon in post-war America. In the interview I begin by talking with Dean about how the idea for the documentary came about, after which we discuss Ray Palmer and Richard Shaver and the subtle way that their lives seemed to complement one another. We also talk about the Shaver Mysteries and the themes they explored along with Ray Palmer's connection to Kenneth Arnold and the enigmatic Maury Island incident. What you do know for sure is that you are told a lot of different things about them by a lot of different people: abductees spinning stories of high strangeness, senators pressuring whistle-blowers for information in congress, devoutly religious authors telling tales of angels and demons, folklorists and scholars of comparative religion painting vivid pictures of ancient beings dressed up in the skin of Technicolor sci-fi nightmares... no-one agrees and everyone is out to prove that their interpretation is the right interpretation - but what does any of it actually mean? In this episode Hine and Buckley don't analyse the verisimilitude of the stories or the veracity of the storytellers but instead examine the discourse around the phenomena or more accurately the discourse around the discourse around UFOs. The mechanisms with which people might think about this topic and the reasons that they may think in that way. The conversation around UFOs is big business, a lot of people making a lot of money - but who are these people and what happens to that money? Where did it all start? Was it Peter Levenda that stealthily laid the ground work over the last 50 years to shape the UFO movement as we know it today? Why would people lie about this stuff? The US Government finally disclosed files on UFOs / UAPs, sort of. Much of what was released included black dots, witnesses to balloons and kites, bright lights seen in the sky, and stories so old they are part of both pop culture and UFO-mythology, including incursions over nuclear-related facilities such as national labs. Newer records released somehow are even less credible than those from the 1940s, the latter of which have already been public knowledge. These include “ghost rockets” and “foo fighters.” The same is true for Apollo reports of strange phenomena. So what was this “disclosure” all about? Could it simply be a distraction? Could it be that the real “evidence” will be presented in Disclosure Day when it is released as a fictional film? Furthermore, there are some real core issues here that need addressing: UFOs are NOT proof of aliens or inter-dimensionsals, nor are they evidence of fallen angels, nephilim, demons, etc. When has the government ever instructed the public to make their own decisions, especially about controversial subjects like UFOs — wouldn't this lead to grandiose fantasies being reinforced by an official stamp? … Could it be a rewriting of UFO history in preparation to disclose that there actually is an explanation for what was released — this is exactly what the intelligence community (CIA) and military suggested doing in the 1950s (Robertson Panel Report). In other words, are these files nothing more than a 75 year old policy being reinforced? The real conspiracy appears to be, then, that the government has no idea what these things are but were worried the public would figure it out before they could, and before they could exploit it for their own purposes. Why would ancient aliens use propulsion systems and space suits recognizable only to modern man and his inventions? Wouldn't they be far more advanced? Or could it be that the subject changes with technology and understanding of the natural world? A pair of brilliant intelligence analysts working for the DIA circa 2006-2007 came up with an idea to design the largest, most audacious, and most secretive UFO program ever funded by the US government. It was dubbed AAWSAP, and the public never knew it existed until 7 years after it ended. In its 27-month existence, it created the world's largest UFO data warehouse, a stack of more than 100 thick, highly detailed reports filled with hard data about UFO cases and incidents, as well as rigorous, original investigations into connections between UFO incidents and paranormal phenomena. The two instigators of AAWSAP came to believe that paranormal events were not a subset of UFO cases, but rather, the opposite. UFOs were - and are - a small slice under a larger paranormal umbrella, according to nuclear engineer, rocket scientist, and DIA analyst Dr. James Lacatski, who was appointed director of AAWSAP and who continued to rely on his fellow innovator, Jay Stratton, who later became head of the UAP Task Force. In this sometimes-tense conversation, Dr. Lacatski reveals that, as far as he knows, no one in government knows the full story about UFOs or where they originate, or what intelligence is behind them. Lacatski has just released "Future Visions," his fourth book culled from the unreleased files of AAWSAP. He doubts that the actual files will ever be released, and that his books constitute the closest thing to full disclosure the public might ever get. Lacatski says there is no way another AAWSAP will ever be approved, but hints that a smaller, more focused effort related to the proposed Kona Blue program did carry on after AAWSAP ended. The UFO public had high hopes when Congress created AARO to investigate UFO/USO/UAP incidents and report findings to both Congress and the public. Years later, AARO is widely viewed as a complete failure. Its first report was riddled with factual errors and typos. Its first director revealed himself to be a thin-skinned, diehard UFO skeptic, hardly an impartial investigator. Witnesses and whistleblowers say AARO ignored or belittled their testimony. As for transparency, AARO has released very few findings, even fewer UAP images, and a second report, as required by law, is many months overdue. The idea that a small office inside the Pentagon could rigorously investigate its own parent organization - the Department of War - seems preposterous on its face. But has AARO found even a single UFO incident it's been unable to debunk? The answer is yes. British journalist Chris Sharp, editor and publisher of Liberation Times, has demonstrated a remarkable ability to break story after story about UFO matters in both the US and the UK. Now he's wrangled an exclusive interview with AARO's former Deputy Director, Tim Phillips. Sharp's full interview could be published in days. In this episode of WEAPONIZED, Jeremy and George hear what Chris picked up from his extremely candid conversation with Phillips. The revelations are stunning. Phillips admitted AARO identified 40-50 cases showing "utterly bizarre" capabilities the "best and brightest people in the world" couldn't explain - instantaneous acceleration, right-angle turns, maneuvers no human aircraft can achieve. They "conclusively proved" these weren't adversary or friendly tech, yet never released a single video to the public. For the first time, a former AARO official confirmed UAPs detected in space. Some demonstrated "signature management" - actively avoiding detection over sensitive military locations. Despite admitting impossible performance characteristics, Phillips refused to say they're non-human or extraterrestrial. Chris describes it as "describing a dog without calling it a dog." His responses felt scripted and performative. Jeremy coins a new term: "Project Blue Box" - information flows in, nothing comes out. Phillips confirmed AARO approached Glenn Gaffney, the CIA Director George named under oath as blocking transfer of a non-human spacecraft. In this episode of WEAPONIZED, Jeremy and George do some globe-hopping in their coverage of UFO-related developments, starting in Austin, Texas, where UAP luminaries gathered in a classy movie theater to chat about recent developments and were thrilled by the appearance of a surprise guest: the one and only Bob Lazar. Also discussed: the demolition of debunker arguments regarding an astonishing UAP incident, as recorded by an American Reaper drone flying near the Jordanian-Syrian border in 2021. To the astonishment of no one, the U.S. government's singular spokesperson for all matters related to UAP was blissfully ignorant of the case (and/or purposefully dodgy and unhelpful), thus once again demonstrating the Pentagon's deep and abiding commitment to UAP transparency, such as it is. Also mentioned: an historic and perilous intrusion of Papoose Lake (S-4) by a courageous but unauthorized investigator, and the ambitious plans of Rep.
