During this episode of Why Change? co-hosts Karla and Jeff discuss Karla's conversation with Jasmin Cardenas, theatre director and activist from Workers Teatro. The dialogues focus on the reciprocal and multiple intersections of the arts and labor issues: how can labor improve in the arts and how can the arts contribute to systemic changes in labor? In this episode you'll learn: How theatre techniques, like Boal's Theatre of the Oppressed, can contribute to dialogues about labor in Chicago; What the arts may learn from labor movements in other sectors; and  The ways teaching artists can act as facilitators for important dialogues about worker's experiences. This was in partnership with Chicago Park District's  Arts & Culture Culture Unit, led be Meida McNeil, and youth leaders from Albany Park Theater Project, Free Street Theater, Kumba Lynx, Move Me Soul, YOUMedia, Columbus Park  Inferno Youth Media Team, Free Spirit Media & the adults who support their learning, growing  and thriving. Our gatherings were held at Chicago Parks across the city.  Using Theater of the Oppressed she uses the tool of theater for social justice work. With Pastor Phil Jackson she Co-Founded Ambassadors for a United Lawndale; working towards racial reconciliation between African American and Latino Youth on the SW side of the city. Supported by The MacArthur Foundation she traveled with 20 students to Mexico to learn about the African presence in Mexico.  She served on the Board of The Pedagogy and Theatre of the Oppressed (PTO) and was the Lead Organizer of the 2011 International PTO Conference held in Chicago. Along with her students, recipient of the 2010 Public Square (Illinois Humanities Council) Award Art Urges, Art Voyages – Looking for Democracy Film Contest. Using her specialization in Creative Drama Jasmin has been teaching children, parents and educators (across the ages 0-100) of the many literacy benefits that can be experienced in bringing stories to life. On December 8, 2006, Joseph Jackson entered a 41-floor professional building at 500 West Madison Street in Chicago, held Allied Barton Security Services officer Robert Brown at gunpoint and demanded to be taken to the 38th floor, where patent lawyer Michael McKenna's office was located. A client of Michael McKenna and an inventor seeking a patent, Joseph Jackson mistakenly thought Michael McKenna had sold his idea and owed him money. Supervising security officer Sidney Chambers knew that Joseph Jackson had been loitering in the building for hours and had suspiciously interacted with officer Robert Brown, but failed to take action. Robert Brown did not follow safety protocol, utilize officer codes to alert his supervising officer to the situation or employ restraint techniques designed to defuse the situation. Instead, he tried to flee the scene and save himself when Joseph Jackson began firing his gun in the law office, fatally shooting Michael McKenna and Allen Hoover and wounding office secretary Ruth Lieb. In 2017, a Cook County, Illinois jury delivered a verdict against Allied Barton Security Services, Sidney Chambers and Joseph Jackson, assigning 60 percent of the responsibility to the deceased Joseph Jackson and 40 percent to Allied Barton in a $30,650,000 verdict.      Click Here to Read/Download the Complete Trial Documents   Guest Bios: Joseph Power Jr. Joseph A. Power, Jr. is the founding partner of the Power, Rogers, LLP law firm in Chicago, and a prominent trial lawyer focusing on cases involving medical malpractice, trucking collisions, wrongful death, product liability and catastrophic personal injuries. Power received his undergraduate degree from the University of Notre Dame in 1974 and his Juris Doctor degree from Loyola University of Chicago in 1977.  Power was named as partner in 1984 and the firm became Hayes & Power.  In 1993, the firm became Power, Rogers & Smith, and has recently become Power Rogers, LLP. At the age of 28, Power became the youngest lawyer in the country to obtain a jury verdict in excess of $1 million for his client.  Power was the lead attorney in a trucking case which led to seventy-six criminal convictions, including the former governor of Illinois in the “licenses for bribes” scandal, which triggered the retesting of over 2000 truck drivers has obtained over 200 verdicts and settlements over $1,000,000.  He has the largest jury verdict in Illinois history for a contested liability personal injury case, and in addition, has the largest medical malpractice jury verdict in Illinois history.  In the last two years alone, he has been to verdict in six cases, all leading to seven and eight million-dollar recoveries. The Real Chi is a learning newsroom program from Free Spirit Media. It's based in the North Lawndale neighborhood and consists of participants ages 18-25 who report on everything from criminal justice reform to arts and culture. Glenance Green is the Deputy Director of Free Spirit Media and Lee Edwards is the Program Coordinator for The Real Chi. The artist, media journalist, organizer, and spacemaker creates worlds through comics, animation, and paintings that reimagine the relationships between liberation, the natural world, gender, mental health, technology, and more. She works for the youth media and journalism nonprofit Free Spirit Media, and is a member of Chicago-based organizations The People's Response Team and For the People Artists Collective. Bria Royal is a multidisciplinary artist from the west side of Chicago whose brain is hardwired in such a way that necessitates art and visual aesthetics as a mode for making meaning out of the world around her. She considers her paintings, comics, and animations to be the result of a radical healing process that she hopes others will benefit from seeing unfold, and an attempt to construct intersectionally black and indigenous mythologies for ourselves and our future liberated descendants. Much of her work centralizes black and brown womxn and femmes as identities in constant solidarity with the elements of our natural world due to parallel experiences of exploitation and resistance. bria is also a 2016 graduate of Northwestern University, where she studied Communications, Film and Psychology, and she uses those fields to guide her approach toward creative modes of storytelling through technological innovation. bria currently works for the youth media production organization Free Spirit Media curating opportunities for West and South Side youth to explore diverse forms of digital arts and expression. She is also deeply invested in the liberation of black and brown communities of color worldwide and organizes alongside fellow Chicago movement artists as a member of For The People Artists Collective. Alongside the arts, bria often facilitates workshops around themes of restorative and transformative justice, and issues related to mental health in activist spaces.

Terrence Thompson is a filmmaker and Chicago native who's been documenting, shaping, and retelling stories throughout the city. His most recent film, "Drive Slow," just premiered through the Chicago Track program, an initiative of Free Spirit Media and DCASE. It also stars one of your favorite podcast cohosts (it's Damon).
