Internationally renowned ceramicist Veronica Castillo alongside Professor Emerita and Independent Publisher Dr. Josie Méndez-Negrete join us in spotlighting their co-authored book, "Rooted in Clay: El Arte de Verónica Castillo." Tony delves into the book written as a plática in which Castillo shares her life work, inspiration, politics, and history with Méndez-Negrete alongside images of her sculptures and experiences that led her to be one of the first artists requested to submit work for the newly launched Latino Heritage Museum for the Smithsonian Institute in Washington DC. Her artwork, primarily ceramics that focus on the “tree of life,” is deeply connected to her indigenous roots in Mexico as well the transformations in aesthetic expressions that have occurred as a result of her work with revolutionary indigenous groups and moving to San Antonio. *********** Verónica Castillo is an internationally acclaimed artist from Izúcar de Matamoros, Puebla, México. At a very young age, under the tutelage of her parents, renowned artists Don Alfonso Castillo Orta and Doña Soledad Martha Hernández Báez, she was exposed to the artistic technique of working in polychromatic ceramics, a tradition passed on from generation to generation. Verónica continues to build upon these traditions while focusing on contemporary issues of injustice and inequality. Her exhibits have achieved national and international recognition, from the Smithsonian in Washington DC to the National Museum of Mexican Art in Chicago to the Museo Amparo in Puebla, Mexico. In 2013, Verónica Castillo received the National Endowment for the Arts National Heritage Fellowship Award. She is the owner of E.V.A. (Ecos y Voces de Arte), a gallery on the Southside of San Antonio. Together with an international network of artists, E.V.A. offers the space and support for various forms of cultural art to thrive. Josie Méndez-Negrete PhD, Professor Emerita in Mexican American Studies at the Department of Bicultural-Bilingual Studies (BBL), University of Texas at San Antonio, received her PhD in Sociology from the University of California, Santa Cruz. Duke University Press published Las hijas de Juan: Daughters Betrayed as a revised edition in 2006 and reprinted it in 2010. In 2015, the University of New Mexico Press published her second book, A Life on Hold: Living with Schizophrenia. Along with publishing book chapter and articles on culture, identity, and education, from 2009 2014, Méndez-Negrete served as Lead Editor of Chicana/Latina Studies: The Journal of MALCS. Aida Murad is an Arab NYC based Intuitive Artist whose mission is to help people feel seen, heard and loved through art. She paints with her fingers due to a past trauma. She became an Artist because she had Rheumatoid Arthritis. They say the darker the shadow the brighter the light. Her Rheumatoid Arthritis was her shadow. Her art is her light and serves as a light for others. When she was 20 years old, she was diagnosed with her shadow and, subsequently, semi paralyzed for 4.5 years. When she was in a place of suffering, she turned to art to help her heal. However, she didn't paint with paint brushes, she painted only with her hands to demonstrate to herself and to the world that she is not damaged, and this dysmorphia will not define her. Today, Aida combines her expertise as a Reiki master, Inuitive, Coach and Artist to create fine art by painting with her fingers to both beautify people's physical spaces and bring healing (each art piece is infused with reiki). As of May 2022, Aida has sold out 10 collections and has been featured in 21 exhibitions. Her work has been featured globally including in Voice of America, Reuters, TRT World, Al Jazeera, and the United Nations. She is named as the 2022 Georgetown University Artist in Residence to create healing art for the Lombardi Comprehensive Cancer Center. She has also collaborated with Grammy Award winning artists including the drummer from The Doors, John Densmore, to use art for social good. Her paintings have been acquired globally including by the previous Deputy Minister of Culture of the U.A.E, Qatar America Institute for Culture, Board Member of the National Museum of Mexican Art and the previous Chairman of the U.S. Commission on Civil Rights under Obama's administration at a historical landmark in Chicago. She is a BMW Foundation Leader and has received numerous awards for women in impact. As an Arab and previously disabled individual, Aida hopes to open increased pathways for more minorities and differently abled individuals to enter the arts as well as use art for nature conservation and climate change awareness.

What would it be like to earn a living from your creativity?I'm not talking about getting paid here and there for small projects. His art is epic and recognizable because of its style and focus. He paints murals highlighting Mexican cultural figures. The icons he chooses to highlight connect with the neighborhood where the mural will live. The technical art style in which he paints is called “low poly”. Low poly art consists of images broken into triangles and polygons. It resembles pixilation except instead of squares, he uses triangles. His art is colorful, bright, and what I call “Instagrammable”.Mauricio has made a name for himself. His murals are scattered throughout the US and he's built a legit full-time business by leveraging his creativity. In this episode, we talk about:Why every artist should have a conversation with an accountantHow going through reps shouldn't feel like work — at least not initially. Why he involves the community in his muralsHow saying no to projects can elevate your worth
