We believe all neighborhoods deserve to be covered in a meaningful way.We amplify positive stories, cover development and local school council meetings and serve as watchdogs in neighborhoods often ostracized by traditional news media.Ground-level coverageOur neighborhood-based reporters don't parachute in once to cover a story. They are in the neighborhoods they cover every day building relationships over time with neighbors. We believe this ground-level approach not only builds community but leads to a more accurate portrayal of a neighborhood.Stories that matter to you — every daySince our launch five years ago, we've published more than 25,000 stories from the neighborhoods, covered hundreds of community meetings and send daily and neighborhood newsletters to more than 130,000 Chicagoans. We've built this loyalty by proving to folks we are not only covering their neighborhoods, we are a part of them. Some of us have internalized the national media's narrative of a broken Chicago. We aim to change that by celebrating our neighborhoods and chronicling the resilience of the people who fight every day to make Chicago a better place for all.

When most of us picture Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., we imagine him on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial or leading the march across Edmund Pettus bridge. But King's impact was felt in Chicago too. He moved to North Lawndale with his family in 1966 (the area has since become the Dr. King Legacy Apartments), and he worked with the Chicago Freedom Movement, raising awareness of dangerous living conditions, housing segregation and discrimination faced by Black Chicagoans. Historian Tammy Gibson spoke with executive producer Simone Alicea last year about King's Chicago legacy. Tell us something you LOVE about Chicago. In the latest installment in our series What's That Building, architecture sleuth Dennis Rodkin shares the story of the Robert Franks Memorial building in Chicago's North Lawndale neighborhood. Robert “Bobby” Franks was 14 years old back in 1924 when fellow teens Nathan Leopold and Richard Loeb killed him and left his body outside of Chicago. The premeditated murder became known as the “crime of the century.” Afterward, Franks' father put money toward a boys' club that he thought would have made his son proud. Amazingly, the building still serves boys today with a variety of enrichment programs. For a full archive of Reset interviews, head over to wbez.org/reset.

The report also earned LeMignot a Peter Lisagor Award in the in-depth reporting or series category and a Herman Kogan Award from the Chicago Bar Association. Le Mignot has won several other industry awards: a local and national Emmy for her breaking news reports on the Blue Line derailment (2008); a local and national Emmy Award for her breaking news reports about the death of Pope John Paul II (2005); the Illinois Broadcasters Association Silver Dome Award (1997); two Peter Lisagor Awards (1994 and 1996) and the National Association of Black Journalists Leadership Award, while a student (1993). Le Mignot has served on the Board of Directors of the Better Boys Foundation. The organization provides educational assistance to boys and girls in the North Lawndale community on Chicago's west side. In 2019, Le Mignot won first place in the Chicago Journalists Association Sarah Brown Boyden Award Competition in the Public Service category for her "Misidentified Man" series of reports. The day before Le Mignot received the award, Senate Bill SB2309 was introduced on November 14, 2019. The bill would make fingerprinting and DNA testing mandatory in John and Jane Doe cases in Illinois. Kanesha Gaines, 21, was killed and eight other women were wounded when someone opened fire in the city's North Lawndale neighborhood early Sunday morning. Kanesha was a funny everything. She was outgoing. She was the queen of the world," Graham said. The shooting happened in the 1500 block of South Keeler Avenue just before 1 a.m. Police said as Gaines and a group of women, gathered there for a luau party, enjoyed the Hawaiian-themed birthday celebration, a black Jeep approached. Without warning, multiple unknown suspects, armed with guns, got out and started shooting at the women. The victims were all shot and wounded and range in age from 20 to 33 years old. Gaines was shot in the face and later died. A 28-year-old woman who was struck eight times remains hospitalized in critical condition. Relatives said Gaines was a home healthcare worker and part-time stylist. She leaves behind a 3-year-old son and a 2-year-old daughter. Voters will choose Chicago's new mayor next Tuesday, April 4. On the ballot are former CPS head Paul Vallas and former CPS teacher and union organizer Brandon Johnson. Johnson is currently Cook County Board Commissioner for the 1st District, which stretches from the city's West Side to suburban Maywood. When campaign season began, very few had Johnson as a major candidate. Now he is hoping to become the first Black man to lead Chicago in 40 years. This week, we're connecting with Mr. Markayle Tolliver, who shares how his K-12 experience in Chicago, growing up in North Lawndale and attending different schools, fueled his passion for education. After graduating with a broadcast journalism background during the Covid-19 pandemic, Markayle explored starting his career in the classroom. “Finding those small connections help the relationship go a long way...” Markayle speaks on the power of being from the same neighborhood as his students, and the longstanding impacts of slavery, lack of knowledge and not having identity affirming people on the front lines. Serving as an educator has increased his interest in counseling, as he wants to examine the role that trauma and violence play on the mental health of students and teachers. He also shares advice, highlights the role of mentoring and encourages educators to advocate for themselves.

Robin Amer of USA Today's investigative podcast The City shares the story behind a massive illegal dump that appeared in Chicago's North Lawndale neighborhood in the '90s. Local kids remember playing on the 21-acre, six-story mountain of debris, and adults recall the seemingly endless stream of dump trucks that rumbled down the street to the formerly vacant lot at all hours of the day and night. Wind blowing over the dump covered the neighborhood in thick dust, affecting the health of nearby residents. When community leaders confronted the man responsible for the dump, they found he was just one part of a larger operation. The FBI was using the North Lawndale dump and the man who created it as part of an investigation into political corruption called Operation Silver Shovel. The operation would bring down politicians and city officials who accepted bribes for allowing things like the illegal dump to happen in their districts. But after the indictments and the operation's end, no one wanted to take responsibility for cleaning up the dump – not the FBI, not the City of Chicago and not the man who created it. The debris sat for years, leaving North Lawndale residents feeling angry and used. The civic neglect and institutional racism that allowed the dump to happen in the first place has continued, long after the last truck of debris was carted away.
