Send us a textWell-known for the alternative country band Dolly Varden, as well as Stump the Host, Steve Dawson is a lifer when it comes to music.  His family roots in Saskatchewan, Dawson has lived for a time in California and Idaho before heading to Chicago in the late 1980's dragging all that western with him.  There, he found a music scene that embraced his style of writing and performing. Chicago being cross-roads of the country-- has its own peculiar mixture of dustbowl, Appalachian, western, bluegrass, Celtic, Mexican, jazz, blues, country and garage rock.  Those elements are all called upon when it comes to being a singer with a guitar in the Windy City, let alone a full band. The small clubs had patrons of all stripes who expected such a mix and were delighted when a band dished out its own special recipe.  Though tough to make a living solely on them, these clubs were the perfect place for experimentation, expression and performance. It's the salsa---not the chips, and Dawson's mix of songwriting is personal, powerful and worth indulging in.  A contemplative man, painfully open, yet guarded enough, Steve Dawson is proof that the city of Big Shoulders is also the city of singer-songwriters.  His bandmate, wife and artist in her own right Diane Christiansen, make their home not too far from those clubs along Division Street.  His website is www.SteveDawsonmusic.com.Support the showWe are always grateful to have you listening to STRUNG OUT. Matt Englar-Carlson is back for part two of our conversation - an introspective journey into healthy masculinity where Matt shares hard-earned wisdom on navigating the changing landscape of modern manhood. With humor and heart, he recounts how confronting rigid notions of masculinity in his work as a therapist sparked a personal quest to redefine what it means to be a good man. Matt and I dig into the transformative power of deep male friendships, the myth of the lone cowboy, and why we must teach boys to embrace their full range of emotions. I'm moved by Matt's vision of a future where men break free from the confines of traditional gender roles to live richer, more connected lives, and he leaves us with a powerful call to action - take the first step, however small, toward building your tribe and showing up as your most authentic self.Bio:Dr. Matt Englar-Carlson is Professor of counseling at the California State University at Fullerton. He is a Fellow of the American Psychological Association (Division 51: Society for Psychological Study of Men and Masculinity). As a scholar, teacher, and clinician, Dr. Englar-Carlson is passionate about training and teaching care providers to work more effectively with their male clients. He has over 35 publications and 60 national and international presentations, most of which are focused on men and masculinity and diversity issues in psychological training and practice. Dr. Englar-Carlson co-edited the books In the Room With Men: A Casebook of Therapeutic Change, Counseling Troubled Boys: A Guidebook for Professionals, and the forthcoming A Counselor's Guide to Working With Men. He was featured as the guest expert in the 2010 APA-produced DVD Engaging Men in Psychotherapy. He is also the co-editor of the 24-volume monograph series Theories of Psychotherapy (APA) that features the world's leading authorities on various theoretical approached to psychotherapy. In 2007 he was named the Researcher of the Year by the Society for the Psychological Study of Men and Masculinity. His editorial board service includes being an editorial board member for the Psychology of Men and Masculinity (2006-2011), the Journal of Social Action (2008- current), The Family Journal: Counseling and Therapy for Couples and Families (1994- 2005), a board member for The Journal of Individual Psychology(1994-2000) and a contributing editor (2000-2007), an advisory board member for Counseling and Human Development (2006-2008), and a board member on the Advisory Board for the Men and Masculinity Series, Routledge Press.  He was also selected to the ACA Task Force on Sexual Minority Youth in Schools from 2004-2006. Valerie Tyler is one of my former coaches. She taught me how to swim and how to overcome my fear of the deep end of the pool. A self-proclaimed tomboy, Valerie has been active all her life but she only got to into Marathons at 50 on a dare. Over the next 20 years, Valerie has run 35 marathons qualifying for the Boston Marathon four times. She also got into triathlons, also on a dare, and after she taught herself how to swim, she started with sprints, Olympics, half-marathons and finally the full ironman. Currently, Valerie focuses on coaching other athletes wanting to promote good health to the next generation. Her business partner is Coach Mo, who was a previous guest here. She also helped start the Southside CARA (Chicago Area Runners Association).     Episode Highlights: Valerie the tomboy since childhood. Her motivation to remain active and help others. Valerie becomes a marathoner on a dare and her first marathon. Some memorable marathons, the good and the bad. She becomes involved in CARA Valerie becomes a triathlon athlete, again, on a dare. Some memories and tips from her experience with triathlons. Valerie is challenging herself to go to Big Shoulders. She talks about her coaching journey. Valerie shares some final words of inspiration. Guest Bio Growing up as a tomboy competing with her older brother, Valerie was always active physically. From baseball to climbing trees, to tag races, to monkey bars, to long jumps, and on and on. Then mud biking! Then she transitioned to African dance, ballet, and jazz. In between, tennis, roller skating, skiing, and aerobic classes. Whew!!!! Always active, always competing, and always challenging herself. Fast forward, she was dared to run a marathon at the age of 50. Why did that happen? Valerie really found her groove….so for the next 20 years, she ran 35 marathons all over the world and more ½ marathons than she can count. During that period, she also was approached by Chicago Area Runners Association (CARA) to build a south side base leaving from LaRabida Hospital, so under pressure, Valerie founded that running group and built it up to 60 plus marathon members. During those 5 years of being the ‘Site Coordinator' for CARA South Side, she qualified for the Boston Marathon 4 times, and lead the 9:30 and 10-minute Pace Groups. Valerie was dared to race in Triathlons at the age of 52. Why did that happen? Over the years, she has participated in many, many Sprint, Olympic, Half Ironman, and 1 Full Ironman. She learned to swim, earned her Life Savers Certification, and began coaching swim lessons with Chicago Blue Dolphins. Her first Ironman at the age of 67 was in Chattanooga, and she placed 2nd in her age group behind a woman that had done 9 and this was her 10th competition. What a proud moment to be on the Podium and invited to Kona!!!!! However, she was one and done. Ironman training was by far the most difficult, challenging, and mentally draining experience she had ever done. She was exhausted but exhilarated enough for a lifetime. In the past few years, Valerie has retired from Corporate America and earned certifications in Yoga, Personal Training, Fitness Training, and Nutritional Training. (She primarily follows a vegetarian diet with an emphasis on protein). She founded her own company, VTFit, 7 years ago and now teaches 40 minutes of strength training on Zoom 5X a week with a base of approximately 60 students, most of whom have been with her for more than 3 years. She has received numerous first and second-place age group awards and hundreds of medals from racing events of all types. As she moves into her senior years, Valerie feels the desire to extend herself and her energies into motivating and training the next generation. She was blessed to have an amazing racing career, and she wants to see more ‘people of color' pushing the envelope and representing the US in marathons and triathlons around the world. So, she continues to train – coaching swimming and track under the guidance of her stellar coach, Mo Wills, of Infinity Multisport. This game is about ‘getting comfortable with being uncomfortable' – his favorite saying. Her favorite mantras are;  (1) Keep It Moving and stay active.  (2) If I can set an example for a healthy lifestyle, my work is done!  (3) Be bold and live life to the fullest in love, health, spirit, family, and friends!!!!  (4) You can choose to be healthy and fit…it's a choice! Each fall, Chicago media report a consistent trend – declining enrollment at Chicago Public Schools. Of those who left by the start of the 2022 school year, about 18,000 moved to a school outside Chicago, 3,000 transferred to private schools, 2,000 dropped out and 1,400 opted for home schooling. Overall, CPS's net loss of students was 10,000. This year's drop came in the wake of COVID upheaval at the district, including a protracted fight between the teachers union and the district over the safety of in-person instruction. But a new report finds there are much larger forces at work, and it's not just impacting big cities like Chicago. The report comes from Kids First Chicago, a group founded by the Civic Committee of the Commercial Club of Chicago that's dedicated to advocating for parents, particularly on the city's South and West Sides. The report identifies three key drivers of the enrollment slide at CPS. One, people are having fewer kids overall. Two, the growth of Latino families is slowing. Three, there is an accelerated out-migration of Black families. The solutions aren't clear in this report – Kids First is embarking on a second installment that includes input from parents. The authors do suggest there are opportunities to win families back, but it's likely a decades-long quest that will take a big change in policy approach beyond the walls of the district itself. This episode is a two-parter. The guest in the second segment discusses rising enrollments at Catholic Schools.
