My guest in episode 309 is Lindsay Sutherland Boal, a trailblazer in the sobriety community who shares insights into the meaning of an alcohol-free lifestyle and what it takes and doesn't take to create a lifestyle that alcohol can't touch. You will love this episode if you are on the fence about going alcohol-free.  Lindsay Sutherland Boal is the visionary founder of The Uncovery App, a groundbreaking platform that redefines how women approach changing their relationship with alcohol. Unlike traditional sobriety resources, Lindsay's work challenges the myth that one must hit "rock bottom" to make meaningful life changes.  In this episode, you'll hear: Why you don't need to hit "rock bottom" to make meaningful changes in your relationship with alcohol - and how to listen to those early whispers of change The vital role of community and women-only spaces in providing judgment-free support and authentic connections How radical accountability and asking powerful questions like "What am I waiting for?" can uncover deeper motivations Why there's no "perfect" time to begin your alcohol-free journey - and how uncertainty is a natural part of the process The importance of empowering language in shifting perspective from what you're giving up to what you're gaining Understanding the distinct phases of the alcohol-free journey - from initial curiosity to active lifestyle changes To learn more about Lindsay and this episode go here.  Thank you for listening today!  Resources Mentioned The Uncovery App She Walks Canada Lindsay's website Episode 186 with Lindsay   Let me help you make living alcohol-free in midlife a better experience!

Determined to create solutions she struggled to find, in 2021 a year after giving up alcohol, Lindsay launched She Walks Canada. She Walks Canada is an online platform that offers connection and coaching to likeminded women on a path to alcohol free living. As suggested by patron Keith S, this week we take a detailed look at Madeira, the Portuguese island that makes a unique and delicious fortified wine! We discuss the very important history (it's why the wine is made the way it is, so even if you hate history, don't skip that part!), the geography and climate of this far-flung island, the grapes that thrive here, and the unbelievable way this fortified wine has been made for centuries. Photo: Frasqueira Madeira, Boal 1977. Source: Getty Images (canva) From the single varieties, to dryness levels, to aging levels, we give a broad overview of this complex wine. We share the facts about the wine and sprinkle in commentary about why we love it so much. There is always a bottle around here for a reason (and part of that reason: you can open it and it won't spoil for months and months…!).   Ditch your idea of cheap cooking versions, this is the real Madeira and we hope this inspires you to try it!   As promised here is a list of the Madeira brands: HM Borges, Henriques & Henriques, J. In today's episode of Bingeworthy, our TV and streaming podcast, host Rodrigo Perez steps inside “Echo 3,” Apple TV+'s new ten-part drama mini-series from Academy Award-winner Mark Boal (“The Hurt Locker,” “Zero Dark Thirty,” “Detroit”). An action-packed thriller set in South America, “Echo 3” is essentially a family drama, a military espionage actioner, and a kidnapping drama with political intrigue. The series follows Amber Chesborough (Jessica Ann Collins), a brilliant young scientist who is the emotional heart of a small American family. She's also married into a larger, more connected, and well-to-do military family. When Amber goes missing along the Colombia-Venezuela border, her brother, Bambi (Luke Evans), and her husband, Prince (Michiel Huisman)—two men with deep military experience and complicated pasts— struggle to find her in a layered personal drama set against the explosive backdrop of a secret war. Boal, of course, has spent most of his award-winning career connected to Kathryn Bigelow, but he broke out on his own for "Echo 3." So we spoke all about this new series, his past work with Bigelow, and 'Triple Frontier,' a film he wrote that was made but was nothing like the version he worked on but does illuminate his fascination with setting stories set in Latin America. We also spoke about a Showtime series he wrote called "Intelligence," about the 2016 election, which he admitted he met Christopher Steele about- the Trump dossier intelligence officer, and while that's not really happening, he hopes it comes around one day. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/theplaylist/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/theplaylist/support

In the latest episode of the Empowerography Podcast, my guest is Lindsay Sutherland Boal. By all accounts I had it all... a beautiful family, a nice place to live, living in a great part of the world. However, life was just not pleasant as I had posted on social media. I was a heavy drinker and it was ruining my life. Just shy of the pandemic, I had a very normal drinking night with a mom friend. I had secretly been 'sober curious' for about 6 months - meaning I knew I had a drinking problem, was not ready to do anything about it but was ready to listen to how others did something about it. For me, January 23, 2020 was not a rock bottom. I didn't get a DUI, I didn't hurt anyone. I didn't lose my job - or any of the other things i told myself would have to happen when i had an alcohol problem that needed addressing. I didn't hit rock bottom. I hit ROCK ENOUGH. Enough of the nightly 3am shame game. Enough hating myself every day. Enough of numbing out from a life I had created. Enough passing the blame buck. Enough of saying "I thought I'd have more, be more, do more" by now. E.N.O.U.G.H. I knew what my problem was. I knew what I had to do. I knew I was the only one that could do it. So i broke up with the only thing that gave me a sense of self-worth.  I came to realize the Alcohol was not mending myself worth, it was stealing it, sip after sip. Day after day. Year after Year. Since getting sober - which has been a roller coaster ride of discovery, I have uncovered and recovered parts of myself that I had totally forgotten about. Additionally, I got 30% pay increase, lost 30 pounds, went back to school, started a podcast, found my inner athlete (completed 4000KM this year alone), all my relationships have improved, my social circle has exploded with powerful purposeful women and I have founded a national movement to empower women to take back control of their lives from Alcohol - SHE WALKS CANADA. My life will never be the same. And that's ok. In fact, it's better than ok. It's epic. In this episode we discuss the sobriety journey, empowerment and clarity coaching, She Walks Canada, being sober curious and transformation. It was not evident, on Oscar Night 2010, that Kathryn Bigelow would walk away a historical victor, for her modestly-sized independent film about distressed bomb technicians in Iraq had stiff competition, including a movie which remains the highest-grossing film of all time. Pluck persevered, ultimately, and The Hurt Locker took not only the Oscar for Best Director, but Best Picture, and four more awards too, including Mark Boal for his journalisticly-inspired Best Original Screenplay. Boal and Bigelow would continue their collaborative relationship for the director's two subsequent films, keeping their grasp on the contemporary with Zero Dark Thirty in 2012. Garnering near universal critical praise and a bevy of Awards Season accolades, it was also met with great controversy, triggering the ire of many who saw its depiction of “enhanced interrogation techniques” as an endorsement of the US's employment of torture as a valid practice for extracting information. For her last film to date, Bigelow plunges into the most politically material of her career. In Detroit, the pair of Boal and Bigelow turn inward to examine America's extrajudicial actions on their own population. The relationship between the country's police force and its systemic subjugation of Black citizens is a subject we've seen Bigelow tackle previously, proving, that, much has remained depressingly the same in the fifty years since the events of Detroit took place. Whether the film's release was arguably botched by distributors or if moviegoers were still reticent to engage with an uncompromisingly brutal portrait of racial violence inherent to the justice systems of our country, audience's failed to show up in 2017, leaving our tenacious, trailblazing auteur empty-handed at the box office, and uncertain if we will see another film from her anytime soon.
