Mangini (@ManginiInABottle) comes in hot to Round Down on moving, he has many anti-moving takes mostly because he created his own guitar gear-filled prison. He came on to talk about his new favorite band Karate.Karate is an American band, formed in Boston, Massachusetts in 1993 by Geoff Farina, Eamonn Vitt and Gavin McCarthy, with Jeff Goddard joining in 1995. The band split up in 2005 before reuniting in 2022.The band is characterized by fusion of indie rock, emo, post-hardcore, post-rock and jazz, with the jazz influence becoming more dominant in later releases. In additon to glowing reviews with less than glowing A to Z letter grades from Chid & Mangini, we also play a game called 'Let's see how many christmas songs we can name' and of course Chid cheats!!!?!We also get very patriotic to end things, you're not going to want to miss this episode with our friend Mangini!Follow Mangini on twitter:https://twitter.com/ManginiNaBottleSupport the showFollow us on Twitter: @CHIDSPIN / @SighFieri / @RoundingDownRate and review us on Apple Podcasts or wherever you listen to podcasts!
Gavin McCarthy is a drummer and songwriter from Boston, MA. He's written, recorded and toured with a multitude of bands and projects over the last two decades, with his main efforts focussed on E and Karate. After a long period of chasing down the masters, Karate is re-releasing their entire catalog with the Numero Group. In this episode Gavin catches us up on his life during the involuntary break, gives us the low down on the Boston venue scene and tells us how taking a break from music changed his self-identity. He also gives us his thoughts on reunion tours, why he's looking forward to this summers Karate dates and why the concept of a live record is odd. Joe and Gavin swop a couple stories that celebrate the beauty and chaos of touring in Italy and we hear a couple Karate tunes. https://www.gavinmccarthy.com/https://karateallston.bandcamp.com/https://numerogroup.com/search?q=Karate&options%5Bprefix%5D=lastEpisode sponsored by Izotope. Gavin was diagnosed with an optic glioma brain tumor at the age of 2 ½. The daycare provider noticed small light brown marks on Gavin's skin. They later learned that this is an indicator of Neurofibromatosis 1 (NF1). Another symptom of NF1 is optic glioma. An MRI was done, and it confirmed the brain tumor diagnosis. Gavin has been on and off treatment for the last 12 years. He just finished proton radiation this June and is still being treated by his Dana-Farber team. Gavin enjoys going to the gym, playing guitar and video games. He attends Walpole High School and will be a sophomore in the fall. The McCarthy family has known many of the Dana-Farber staff for 12 years and look forward to seeing them at appointments. Lisa Scherber and the staff do an amazing job planning activity for the families and it gives them all something to look forward to. The music therapist has been especially wonderful and has taught Gavin how to play the guitar and the ukulele. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

We listened to the self titled debut album from the Boston based band, Karate. Mike suggested this pick at the end of our Fugazi discography coverage and Jason happened to find it on the street not too long ago. Thalia Zedek came to Boston in 1979 and started her first band White Women and from there became ingrained the Boston music scene – a mainstay through an impressive string of different bands including Dangerous Birds, Uzi, Come and Live Skull, when she moved to NY for a brief stint. She currently has a trio called E with Gavin McCarthy and Jason Sanford, but focuses much of her energy on her solo work in the Thalia Zedek Band. Her most recent release is called Fighting Season that is in my opinion a perfect fit for a Fall Season playlist. The album has a raw power that you hear not only through her guitar but also in her mournful and earnest voice – backed by a fantastic group of musicians that includes violist Dave Curry, bassist Winston Braman, pianist Mel Lederman, and drummer Jonathan Ulman. Song List: Song 1: Fighting Season (Fighting Season) Song 2: Bend Again (Fighting Season) Song 3: JJ85 (You're A Big Girl Now) Live Songs: Song 1: Of The Unknown Song 2: Ladder

Newly married, a 10-day-old baby and newly redundant, 2008 was an interesting year for Sara Mitchell and Gavin McCarthy. But 2009 was an even more interesting year, when the pair, a former property developer and marketing professional with no food business experience whatsoever, decided to buy a food truck and set up Ireland's first chicken rotisserie business - Poulet Bonne Femme. First there were the markets and the freezing-cold conditions of 2010, where the couple survived two months of no income right before Christmas. Then there was the disastrous music festival that nearly killed their business entirely, which included losing the weekend's meagre takings in a puddle of mud. And finally there was the stroke of genius that took Poulet Bonne Femme indoors and transformed it into a 40-job enterprise. If you're wondering how to turn any crisis into a bountiful opportunity, Sara and and Gavin can tell you how. Podcast Length: 31:57 Click Here To Download
Who are you telling to wax off? This week Gavin McCarthy joins us as we belt up to get in the ring with THE KARATE KID, the 1984 martial arts drama starring Ralph Macchio, Pat Morita and Elizabeth Shue. It's the classic story of a man who exploits the labour of a teenage boy under the guise of teaching him how to defend himself. We loved this film when we were younger, but how does it hold up now?
