For the 20th anniversary of the debut Clap Your Hands Say Yeah album, we take a detailed look at how it was made. After Alec Ounsworth began recording demos of the songs he was writing, he connected with musicians he met while attending Connecticut College. The band was officially formed in 2004 and included Ounsworth, Lee Sargent, Tyler Sargent, Sean Greenhalgh and Robbie Guertin. As the rest of the band relocated to New York, Ounsworth remained in his hometown of Philadelphia and commuted for rehearsals and shows. They started recording an EP that they were intending to shop around to labels. While continuing to work on new songs, the EP evolved into a full-length album that they recorded in spurts when they could get studio time. Clap Your Hands Say Yeah (Self-Titled) was eventually self-released in 2005. In this episode, Ounsworth describes his songwriting process for the album and how his demos grew into the full band arrangements. He lays out his vision for the album and how he was hyper focused on adding overdubs, interludes and song segues to create a more impactful listening experience. By releasing and distributing the album themselves, he describes the value he put on being independent at that time. In addition, he talks about the discomfort he felt when the band started gaining a lot of attention, partially due to a Pitchfork review of the album. From being labeled “blog rock,” to developing his unconventional vocal style, to writing about romantic relationships and the prospect of success, to taking inspiration from artists like Brian Eno, Tom Waits, Wire, The Magnetic Fields and David Bowie, to the value of doing it yourself and remaining independent, we'll hear the stories of how the record came together.
Today begins our deep dive into Aaliyah's third album, Aaliyah. Baby Girl once again wanted to walk down a new road with her music, refusing to stay stagnant and rest on her laurels. What resulted was a lush, diverse, mature set of songs that set the tune for the summer of 2001. Eight weeks later, we would lose her, so I really wanted to give her work the flowers it deserves before getting into the plane crash. We had a few... difficulties this episode. I've decided that "Black Hole Benny" the giant space cat must have been interfering with our transmission. Apologies in advance that the interview skips around a few times. We had a terrible time with the recording service, and people kept dropping out and having difficulty connecting. Bearing that in mind, this is still an excellent episode packed with tons of great insights into how this album was made!In today's episode of Michael's Mixdown, stop.drop.rewind rejoins me to discuss their newest release with their engineer and producer, Roye Robley! Their self-titled album hit the airwaves back in November, and has been a big hit for the band. Episode 3 of our Grape Expectations Series features two—count ‘em, TWO SEPARATE INTERVIEWS with drummer Don Stevenson and guitarist Peter Lewis, each of whom gives their own Rashomon-like perspective on the fascinating early part of Moby Grape's career. Disastrous tours, lawsuits, police busts, horribly nefarious managers, a fake touring version of the band, mysterious black magic witches, and drug-induced madness. And, no joke—that's just within the band's first two years. The first episode of my conversations with both Don & Peter features both men discussing their first two records, the self-titled debut and Wow, right up to when Skip had his breakdown. Here's just a few of the many things that Don & Peter both separately discuss with Discograffiti in Part 1 of our conversation:How the band initially coalesced; The early days finding their sound at The Ark;How the major label feeding frenzy over the band wound up impacting them;Don's infamous front cover middle finger; An in-depth discussion of their legendary self-titled debut; The steep downhill slide that began literally on the night of their launch party; And the time Skip broke down crying in the studio when the reaction to his new song wasn't as he'd expected. Then, for good measure, Peter drops a bomb at the end of the whole thing.Listen: linktr.ee/discograffitiI support a wife and a six-year-old son with Discograffiti as my sole source of income. For nearly two decades as one half of the band Lucius, Jess Wolfe and Holly Laessig have been sending us to space, and also wrapping us up like Snuggies, with their vocal harmonies. The new Lucius record, self-titled and self-produced by drummer Dan Molad, represents what Wolfe said is “the most honest and unfiltered” version of the group, including impressions of domesticity, growth and loss. Laessig said making this as just the four-piece “felt like a coming home.”
The Osees' John Dwyer and prolific new wave drummer David Barbarossa join forces in a new supergroup, Chime Oblivion, delivering 12 songs of dense, anarchic, delightful proto-punk. We discuss their self-titled debut on episode #232 "For the Record."

Happy 2025! I'm so excited for another year of Write on Track. First up, I sat down with Rick George for a fabulous chat on his journey to releasing his self-titled debut project. During our conversation, we talked about remaining genuine while writing songs, songwriting inspiration, performing covers, developing our voices as artists, being hands-on in the studio, how songs have different interpretations, and much more. It was a delight having Rick on the show, so I hope you enjoy listening to our conversation. Are you enjoying Write on Track? Do you have a topic suggestion for an episode? In this very special episode, we dive into the genius and madness of the great Warren Zevon via a dynamic roundtable reuniting three of his longtime collaborators - Waddy Wachtel, Jorge Calderón and Bob Glaub - and our guest co-host, avowed Zevon super fan producer/musician Shooter Jennings. Part one of this three part tribute to Warren Zevon features a treasure trove of insights, anecdotes and wild tales across the decades that marked Zevon's legacy, from his time playing with The Everly Brothers in the early 1970's through the writing and recording of Mr. Bad Example in 1991. Bringing to life Zevon's Self Titled album (1976); Excitable Boy (1978); Bad Luck Streak in Dancing School (1980); and Mr. Bad Example (1991) our guests share incredible stories and intimate details of the recording, writing and creative process that add vibrant color to his remarkable body of work. In this episode Shooter Jennings and I host three former collaborators who reunite to reflect with humor and emotion on their making of this legendary catalog. The guests include Waddy Wachtel who produced and co-wrote on the albums Excitable Boy, The Envoy, Mr. Bad Example and whose distinctive guitar can be heard on these and other albums throughout Zevon's career; Jorge Calderón, one of Warrens closest friends and career long co-writers (Veracruz, Jungle Work, Keep Me In Your Heart) as well as the producer of Zevon's grammy winning final album - The Wind (which will be a focus of Part 2 in this series); and Bob Glaub, legendary touring and session bass player who can be heard all over Warrens Self Titled album, Excitable Boy, The Envoy and Mr. Bad Example. Co-hosting this episode is Grammy winning musician/producer Shooter Jennings, a Zevon super fan who in 2023 released a live Zevon covers album with his project the “Werewolves of Los Angeles” (check it out here: ffm.to/dozevon) Shooter and I delve into the untold stories of his Zevon's most iconic songs and reflect on his immense talent and unique personality. S4-Ep.1 The Doors-Self-Titled Release (Elektra) Released January 4, 1967, Recorded August of 1966 Elektra Records The Doors is a groundbreaking debut album that blends rock, blues, jazz, and psychedelia with a unique poetic sensibility, largely driven by Jim Morrison's dark, introspective lyrics. Recorded in just six days, the album features a distinctive sound, notably Ray Manzarek's Vox Continental organ, Robby Krieger's flamenco-inspired guitar work, and John Densmore's jazzy drum style. Key tracks like "Light My Fire," with its iconic organ riff and extended solos, and "Break On Through (To the Other Side)," with its rebellious energy, set the stage for the band's rise to fame. The album's fusion of musical styles, alongside Morrison's mysticism and philosophical themes, made it an instant classic, peaking at #2 on the U.S. charts. While not all tracks are equally memorable, The Doors established the band as one of rock music's most innovative and influential forces during the 1960s.
