Today we're interviewing drummer Erik Tunison and author Sahan Jayasuriya to discuss every album by Die Kreuzen. While the band began as ferocious hardcore punk in the early 80s, they quickly evolved. With every subsequent record, they were always a few years ahead of their time, pioneering genres like noise rock, alt rock, and grunge. Now, Erik and Sahan (author of Don't Say Please: The Oral History of Die Kreuzen) are here to tell us the entire fascinating story of Die Kreuzen. Hello and welcome to our first official We Will Rank You rerun. You may have noticed that we've had to reupload some old episodes recently that were mistakenly taken down for copyright reasons. I looked at our analytics for the first time in ages and noticed that we had the biggest month we've ever had just because of one extra old episode I'd put back up. I mean, I'm already slowly putting up all of the old episodes on Youtube with fun visuals. I guess I can put up an oldie here too.Jim chose the first one to bring back and he picked episode seven on the self-titled debut of the Stone Roses from 2021. He chose to rank each song in the order that they're on the album, which we only did one other time, for Blur's Parklife, before the others agreed that it was anticlimactic when we named our favorite song in the first few minutes. I told ya. At an hour and 57 minutes, it was our longest episode to date but a couple of episodes later, Sinead passed it by one minute and eventually our 1983 wildcard episode was our longest at nearly three hours. For years, this was our most listened to episode until it was recently taken over by our Wildcard Live Album show.Jim writes: "The hosts agree (I think) that this is the group's favorite album they've ever ranked. I maintain my album picks are the best. No one comes close." He's not right about his picks being the best but this episode probably is in a very close race with Violent Femmes for our biggest surefire lovefest, except for, spoiler alert, Dan's take on Adored, which became an oft-repeated anecdote. Here it tis.Jim's lemony-fresh pick is by FAR the album that the four of us have all loved the most. That combined with Adam being the singer for a ridiculous Stone Roses coverband means that there was a LOT for us to say, resulting in our longest episode yet. However, it's a FUN one. For fans of podcasts that go track-by-track instead of our usual countdown, today is your lucky day for a special episode on this 1989 classic. Special guests include 33 1/3 Stone Roses author Alex Green from Stereo Embers podcast and F#!kin' In The Bushes DJ Daniel Sant! Steppenwolf- Self-Titled Album (Dunhill Recordings) Release Date: January 22, 1968 Steppenwolf's 1968 self-titled debut is a cornerstone of hard rock's early evolution, blending blues roots with the heavier, riff-driven attack that would help shape proto–heavy metal. Powered by John Kay's gritty, commanding vocals and Goldy McJohn's roaring Hammond organ, the album balances raw aggression with social awareness. Signature tracks include the thunderous “Born to Be Wild,” forever linked to biker culture and countercultural freedom, and the dark, cautionary “The Pusher.” Blues covers like “Hootchie Kootchie Man” sit comfortably beside originals that range from boogie workouts to psychedelic-tinged jams. Though occasionally rough around the edges, the record's energy, attitude, and iconic songs made it a massive success and established Steppenwolf as one of the defining hard rock bands of the late '60s. In the first episode of this brand-new series, host Dave Gebroe talks with Spirit biographer Ryan Gabrinetti, and together they discuss the classic psych band's entire recorded output with commentary, stories, and star ratings for every release. Here are just a few of the many things that Ryan discusses with Discograffiti in this podcast: How Randy California wound up crossing paths with Jimi Hendrix in a life-changing moment as a teenager that set him on his path for the rest of his life; How a teenage kid wound up playing in a band with his 45-year-old step-father in an era when you were supposed to distrust anyone over 30; How Mamas & The Papas producer Lou Adler wound up taking the band under his wing; The lawsuit with Led Zeppelin over “Stairway To Heaven”, and the Spirit song which they allegedly stole for it; And an in-depth deep dive on every song off Spirit, their 1968 debut record. Ever wondered how a hook can change the room before you even realize you're dancing? We revisit Nina Sky's self-titled debut and the lightning-bolt session that birthed Move Ya Body in about twenty minutes, unpacking how a global riddim, sharp production choices, and twin harmonies fused into a sound that defined countless nights out. From Puerto Rican roots and a Queens upbringing to the Coolie Dance riddim supplied by Cipha Sounds and the Jetsons' studio touch, we pull on every thread that made this record both a radio staple and a deep-cut treasure chest. We don't stop at the single. You'll hear us sit with the R&B core that powers tracks like You Deserve It and Let It Go, where the writing is tender, direct, and emotionally clean. We break down drum pockets, tremolo lines, and why minimalist rhythms make dance floors breathe. Goodbye and Your Time open a window into intimacy and misalignment; Runaway channels the urge to escape chaos without glamorizing it; Surely Missed holds grief and memory with restraint. Then there's Temperatures Rising, an acoustic-leaning standout whose nylon-string warmth and layered harmonies feel close enough to touch.Along the way, Tim shares a vivid Williamsburg memory—water tower skyline, a DJ rinsing that riddim, a $25 drink that turned into a keepsake—showing how personal moments fuse to songs and never let go. We spin the full album, weigh the genre alchemy of dancehall, reggae, reggaeton, and R&B, and close by picking our three favorite non-hits. If you love understanding why certain records live forever in clubs and in heads, you'll feel right at home here.Hit play, ride the beat with us, and tell us your top deep cut from the album. In this episode of the XS Noize Podcast, Mark Millar is joined by guitarist and songwriter Cathal Mac Gabhann from Cork alt-rock and shoegaze outfit The Altered Hours — one of Ireland's most vital underground bands. The Altered Hours released their self-titled third album on November 7th via Pizza Pizza Records. Recorded to tape by analogue producer Julie McLarnon (New Order, Lankum, Happy Mondays), the album captures the band at their most raw, warm, and emotionally direct. Formed in 2010, the band have carved out a unique place in the European alternative scene through two albums, a run of EPs, and a reputation for immersive, fuzz-drenched live shows. Their independent spirit has earned them admiration from peers and fans alike. Cathal discusses the band's evolution, the creative shift behind the new record, and how recording to tape has brought out their most dynamic sound yet. He also reflects on touring with Fontaines D.C., playing venues like The Bataclan and Alexandra Palace, and stepping in as their live guitarist across Japan and Australia. Now signed to Pizza Pizza Records, The Altered Hours step confidently into a new phase — honouring their psych-rock roots while pushing into bolder, more atmospheric territory. Listen to Cathal Mac Gabhann discuss the making of the new album, the journey behind it, and where The Altered Hours go next — exclusively on the XS Noize Podcast. Dan, Manny, & Billy put New Found Glory's Self-Titled pop-punk-emo “classic” to the ultimate test—THE NOSTALGIA TEST! “New Found Glory shoots their load on the first five songs of this album.” -Billy WARNING! This episode is a brutal takedown & nostalgic epiphany, so if you're sensitive to hearing your favorite band be taken to task then listen still and email us your opinions to thenostalgiatest@gmail.com. We also have a special audience member/guest who was on the Little Monsters episode, Andrew Breen (rocktapusjones). Theres so much talk about what it means to be a “classic” band, the groups we have to leave behind, and the ridiculous things that happen hanging out past 2am. Nostalgia definitely doesn't mean that things are good, and the guys get into that as well, and is emo-pop-punk a whole genre of dudes who were friend zoned, maybe. This gets talked about and so much more. Between 2008 and 2012 he toured internationally with his band Sound of Rum, launching a solo career with debut album ‘Everybody Down' in 2014. It and second album ‘Let Them Eat Chaos', released in 2015, were both nominated for the Mercury Prize. Kae has since released three further solo albums, including BRIT Award-nominated ‘The Line Is A Curve'. Kae is widely recognised as one of the UK alternative scene's most essential voices, acclaimed for his exceptional lyricism and acute social commentary. Both are particularly evident on his fifth studio album, ‘Self Titled', released earlier this year. ‘Self-Titled' is Kae's first collaboration with multi-award winning UK producer, songwriter and musician Fraser T. Smith. The trio sit down at Fraser's studio, Utopia, where the album was written and recorded, to discuss developing creative harmony working together for the first time, the process of building a song using ProTools, the influence of drum textures and bass sounds on the record, how one creative choice can completely change the direction of a track and much more. As selected by our Patreon backers for a loosely spookily themed commentary episode, we're talking about the 1984 debut of beloved ethereal mainstays Dead Can Dance. With one foot in Brendan Perry and Lisa Gerrard's roots in post-punk and one in the fatalistic, shimmering aether they would go on to make their home, it's an imperfect yet fascinating starting point for the duo.
This week we're discussing every album by Women. From Calgary, Alberta, Canada, Women are a right-down-the-middle-split between indie garage rock and noisy prog rock, with almost nothing in the middle. Made up of Patrick Flegel (guitar, vocals), Matt Flegel (bass, vocals), Mike Wallace (drums), and Christopher Reimer (guitar). The band struggled in their existence, despite their acclaimed second album, Public Strain and broke up due to an onstage fight. Reimer tragically died unexpectedly two years later. For the 20th anniversary of the debut Clap Your Hands Say Yeah album, we take a detailed look at how it was made. After Alec Ounsworth began recording demos of the songs he was writing, he connected with musicians he met while attending Connecticut College. The band was officially formed in 2004 and included Ounsworth, Lee Sargent, Tyler Sargent, Sean Greenhalgh and Robbie Guertin. As the rest of the band relocated to New York, Ounsworth remained in his hometown of Philadelphia and commuted for rehearsals and shows. They started recording an EP that they were intending to shop around to labels. While continuing to work on new songs, the EP evolved into a full-length album that they recorded in spurts when they could get studio time. Clap Your Hands Say Yeah (Self-Titled) was eventually self-released in 2005. In this episode, Ounsworth describes his songwriting process for the album and how his demos grew into the full band arrangements. He lays out his vision for the album and how he was hyper focused on adding overdubs, interludes and song segues to create a more impactful listening experience. By releasing and distributing the album themselves, he describes the value he put on being independent at that time. In addition, he talks about the discomfort he felt when the band started gaining a lot of attention, partially due to a Pitchfork review of the album. From being labeled “blog rock,” to developing his unconventional vocal style, to writing about romantic relationships and the prospect of success, to taking inspiration from artists like Brian Eno, Tom Waits, Wire, The Magnetic Fields and David Bowie, to the value of doing it yourself and remaining independent, we'll hear the stories of how the record came together.
