At long last, artist Leela Corman joins the show as we celebrate her breathtaking new graphic novel, VICTORY PARADE (Schocken Books)! We talk about how the book brings together the women welders of WWII-era Brooklyn Navy Yards, professional wrestling, and her lifelong obsession with the Shoah, how discovering her watercolor style was like the portal between life and death opening, the art school experience that derailed her, and how the artistic ground start shifting beneath her as she got serious about her comics. We get into her life-defining visit to the Philadelphia Museum of Art, the sacred responsibility of teaching, the influence of New Objectivity (& a bazillion other styles and modes of art & storytelling) on her work, why she brought characters from her earlier GN Unterzakhn into Victory Parade, her twin polestars of Primo Levi & Lisa Carver, and her music-comics collaboration with Thalia Zedek. Plus we discuss the Gen X practice of warts-and-all autobio comics, transgenerational trauma and the next book in her 'Birnbaumiad' triptych, the BS of artist's statements, the revelation of Neko Case's music, and a lot more. THALIA's BIO Guitarist/vocalist Thalia Zedek began playing in bands and recording soon after moving to Boston from Washington D.C. in 1979. In 1986, Thalia's 3rd band, Uzi, released an EP on Homestead Records called “Sleep Asylum” which was later reissued by Gerard Cosloy on Matador Records in 1993. After Uzi broke up Thalia joined established noise rock band Live Skull on lead vocals and relocated to New York. She recorded 2 albums and an EP with them before returning to Boston and founding the band Come in 1991. Come released 4 albums and numerous EP's and singles on the Matador, Sub Pop, Domino, Glitterhouse and Placebo labels. Their full catalogue is currently being reissued on Fire Records. In 2001 Thalia started releasing solo records under her own name, first on Matador and Kimchee Records and then on the Thrill Jockey label where she continues as an active recording artist to this day. In addition to her solo work Thalia also records and performs with the Thalia Zedek Band and her newer band E, a trio that she started in 2013 with Jason Sanford of Neptune. She was also a member of the now defunct experimental group tK E has released 2 singles, a cassette, 3 LP's and an EP and are currently working on their 4th LP. Thalia continues to tour in the US and internationally with the Thalia Zedek Band and E, as well as the band Come, who reunited to tour in support of their recent reissues. Her most recent releases are 2021's “Perfect Vision” LP on Thrill Jockey by the Thalia Zedek Band, and 2022's “Any Information” EP by E on the Czech label Silver Rocket. In 2023's E released 7inch “Live at Cave 12” on the 100% Breakfast label. Thalia Zedek in conversation with David Eastaugh American singer and guitarist. Active since the early 1980s, she has been a member of several notable alternative rock groups, including Live Skull and Uzi both of which, according to Spin magazine, "made big noise in the underground", and Come. Critic Heather Phares writes that Zedek's music can be defined by "the permanent, aching rasp in her voice, her guitar's bluesy bite, the startlingly clear-eyed lyrics about life and loss."

Thalia Zedek has been a force on the independent music scene since the early 80's and she's showing no signs of slowing down. It was an honor to have her as a guest on the show as we covered as much as we could of her storied career. From her early days with White Women and The Dangerous Birds, to Uzi, Live Skull, the amazing Come, and her fabulous solo career which is still going strong, with a new solo record and the 20th year anniversary of "Been Here And Gone" reissue on vinyl... Our guest today is just as much of a singular and influential artist as the featured album. Thalia Zedek has a lot to share at the moment. Her first solo release is getting the full treatment for it's 20th anniversary. Been Here and Gone is being reissued by Thrill Jockey Records on vinyl for the first time and in limited edition gold vinyl too! Get that here: https://thaliazedek.bandcamp.com/album/been-here-and-gone-20th-anniversary-reissue Also the Thalia Zedek Band has a new record coming out. Perfect Vision is available for pre-order now here: https://thaliazedek.bandcamp.com/album/perfect-vision And something I don't have a link for that Thalia shared with me is that Come will have a 45 of Gun Club covers available through Chunklet Industries in early June, as well as some Come reissues coming out on Fire Records in October. Mark your calendars, or follow us on Social media and we'll get you the updates. psychicstatic.net Jeff Robbins of 123 Astronaut wrote and performed the theme song.

Thalia Zedek's distinctive voice and soul-baring songwriting have powered a series of bands, including Live Skull and Come, as well as her own solo career. On this episode, she discusses a seminal moment with Patti Smith, obscure Kentucky band Circle X, and her love of Nick Cave.

Episode 123 - a conversation with Richard Bouchard. Last year we went to our first One Night Band event at The Sinclair and left with a long list of possible guests – Thalia Zedek, Cliff Notez and Oompa to name just a few. We thought we would get to the bottom of this by talking with the guy who started this unique event, Richard Bouchard. We tend to run into Richard everywhere. He currently works with the band Sidewalk Driver and runs a business that supplies on demand management, booking and promotional campaigns for bands that need a hand with short or long term projects. But the One Night Band is really different. 40 or so musicians are organized into bands (for one night – get it?) Then the magic happens. Song List: Live songs recorded at The Sinclair - Boston One Night Band 2018 Song 2: Five Steps (Sidewalk Driver)
Thalia Zedek & Chris Brokaw helped found the band Come in the early '90's in Boston. Before that Zedek had played in the bands Uzi and Live Skull, and Brokaw drummed for Codeine. Since Come disbanded in the early 2000's, both have gone on to maintain successful solo careers. They stopped by Louisville on a recent living room tour, and guest host Carrie Neumayer sat down to catch up with them. They talked about songwriting processes, the charm of intimate venues, politics in music, and more... This episode is sponsored by Guestroom Records, Heine Bros. Coffee, & Zanzabar.
Thalia Zedek came to Boston in 1979 and started her first band White Women and from there became ingrained the Boston music scene – a mainstay through an impressive string of different bands including Dangerous Birds, Uzi, Come and Live Skull, when she moved to NY for a brief stint. She currently has a trio called E with Gavin McCarthy and Jason Sanford, but focuses much of her energy on her solo work in the Thalia Zedek Band. Her most recent release is called Fighting Season that is in my opinion a perfect fit for a Fall Season playlist. The album has a raw power that you hear not only through her guitar but also in her mournful and earnest voice – backed by a fantastic group of musicians that includes violist Dave Curry, bassist Winston Braman, pianist Mel Lederman, and drummer Jonathan Ulman.
