Sculptor SOKARI DOUGLAS CAMP focuses on the 1786 TIGNON LAW in Spanish-colonial Louisiana, that effectively tried to OUTLAW BLACK WOMEN'S HAIR. THE TIGNON LAW ordered women of colour — including the roughly one thousand free black women of New Orleans — to cover their heads. It was designed to DEMEAN and to STRIP these increasingly powerful women of their STATUS. It BACKFIRED spectacularly. The women turned the MANDATED HEADWRAP into something dazzling: towering, brocade-like turbans that would have made onlookers do a double take even in the twenty-first century. So GLAMOROUS were they that they swept the ATLANTIC WORLD as the most fashionable item of the age — with even WHITE WOMEN imitating them.I go to London's October Gallery to see SOKARI DOUGLAS CAMP's new collection inspired by this history. The acclaimed British-Nigerian sculptor — who describes herself as a welder first and foremost — works in steel, rendering the creases and folds of calico, the lace of a headwrap and the tartan of a shawl in metal, studded with coins to speak to the transatlantic trade and how black bodies were "claimed" by money. Drawing on an Italian print that first captivated her, Sokari reflects on her KALABARI roots, four decades of life in England, and the layered strands of blackness — African, Caribbean, English — that now run through her work. With more than forty solo shows behind her, she explains why insisting on visibility, and educating "our colonizers," still matters. In this episode, the collective is back together. It's been a minute. They get into the value (or lack of) of good video when trying to get booked and what they/some actually use. In April 1834, a massive fire broke out at the mansion of Delphine LaLaurie on Royal Street in New Orleans French Quarter. LaLaurie was known to have kept several slaves as servants in the home, but when bystanders attempted to enter the house to rescue those trapped inside, they found the doors barred. After forcing the doors open and making their way inside the house, the rescuers were horrified to find the “horribly mutilated” bodies of at least seven of LaLaurie's slaves. Delphine LaLaurie was known to treat her servants very badly, including physically abusing them, but no one in New Orleans had imagined she was a sadistic murderer. After the discovery of the horrors in the LaLaurie mansion, Delphine LaLaurie fled New Orleans, fearing mob violence, and lived the rest of her life as an exile in Paris—but that is not the end of the story. Just a few decades after LaLaurie abandoned her home and fled the country, her story and those of the men, women, and children who suffered in her home worked their way into New Orleans folklore. When we recorded this episode two weeks ago, we knew that the Supreme Court was planning on releasing a judgment in Chiles v. Salazar — to decide whether Colorado's law banning conversion therapy (which is similar to laws in 22 other states) likely violated the First Amendment. We thought the decision might come in June. But it fell last week like a hammer, and has the potential to undo years of advocacy to ban treatments that have tried to "ungay" thousands of kids, teens, and adults. The judgment is devastating. But it also reminds us that just because a treatment is "legal" doesn't mean it's ethical — or even that it works. (It doesn't!) The Context of White Supremacy welcomes historian and Admitted Racist Michael Phillips. Classified as a White Man, Phillips is “a scholar of Texas race relations, racism, and right-wing extremism, he has taught at Collin College and worked with SMU's Clements Center for Southwestern Studies.” While examining the assassination of Patrice Lumumba, Gus T. saw some of the same names of people who are discussed related to the assassination of John F. Kennedy. Powerful Race Soldiers had many White Supremacist reasons to see both Kennedy and Lumumba terminated. Many of these Racists live in and/or are connected to Texas. While researching, Gus T. located Phillips' White Metropolis: Race, Ethnicity, and Religion in Dallas, 1841–2001. The book examines what it means to be classified as White and the local history of the System of White Supremacy in Dallas. We'll discuss White culture - which is basically lynching black people and minstrel shows. And why the Racist Power structure of Dallas is important to understanding the Kennedy assassination and Dallas history in general. Gus T. and Mr. Phillips had a major disagreement, and Gus accused Phillips of lying in the book when he wrote: “The Jim Crow system that fully developed in Dallas after the 1920s represented a more subtle and effective form of establishment dominance. Lynching had oppressed both black men and white women.” Phillips had no evidence to support how White Women were systemically oppressed by White Men in a manner similar to black males. White Women advocated for White Women's suffrage so they could reinforce White Supremacy. White Women made sure their White children had niggra classmates - which denied black children access to quality education, and White Women are the first teachers of Racist Women and Racist Woman. Phillips admitted to Practicing White Supremacy/Racism and being informed about Racism. Jenny (00:02): I think is actually thought provoking. I've seen some conversation around the idea that there was this intentional move to make white women the face of this administration and to do it in a way that is you're woefully unprepared. You maybe even are intentionally ill prepared to take the fall and that that is not a new dynamic for white men. Rebecca (01:03): She really can't talk. Jenny (01:06): Okay. I'm sorry. We had just talked, so I was not prepared for your voice to sound like that. It sounds great. It sounds great. Yeah. (01:28): I know. I know, but I still wasn't ready. I'm sorry, friend. That sucks. You sound really sorry. (01:53): Yeah. No, I like this, Rebecca. I feel like this is so much about what I've been researching and writing for my book is what I'm calling the anatomy of a missionary and looking at how white women were set up as soft power for imperialism and the gender social role that white women serve abroad. I think we're experiencing now what Emma says calls the boomerang of imperialism. And so the roles that white women have taken on in the global south for 50 years plus, we're now seeing those higher levels of power, but it's not actually ... It is levels of power, but it's mostly levels in proximity to male power that are still above those women. So they're always going to be on the sacrificial block whenever they need to be more than the white males in those positions would be, is what I think. (03:05): I would call it a position of power so long as the performance is enacted to suit power. And I just read this really great article from Carrie Twigg about how Christine Nome essentially got fired because she couldn't perform on TV well. And Trump is looking to continue to build his media empire and use propaganda to get people to continue to stand behind him, and she didn't perform well. And so it is power so long as you don't mess up, but the second that you don't align yourself with the way that power wants you to. So it's a really precarious power, I would say. Rebecca (03:56): See, I would even say, I don't think that's why she got fired. I would say that- And there was no move to find someone that's actually qualified, who had a snowball's chance of performing well on the world stage. So that's why I'm like, I don't think it is as simple as she didn't perform well. She was never going to perform well. And you knew that when you picked her. And so to me, I'm like, what's that choice actually about? It's the same thing now. I heard on the news recently that (05:09): Erica Kirk just got appointed to be the chair of the Air Force. I don't know. Some committee, some task force that has something to do with the running of something to do with the Air Force. And all of my apologies for not getting this particular thing specifically right. But my thing is, what do you know about armed forces? Nothing. It's not like you're a former retired Air Force, whatever. You're not. You know nothing about any of this. So again, you're picking someone from jump, blonde-haired, blue-eyed female who is ill-prepared from the very beginning for this very public face of a very armed forces in the middle of a war and your pick is Erica Kirk. Really? What's that set up about? (06:25): I'm just saying when it goes left and it will, just like what happened with ICE, it's going to take this turn for the worst that you won't actually recover from. Now you have a sacrificial lamb. You can say that somebody lost their job over this and it makes it look like you are doing something to address a grave wrong and you're not. (07:12): And the sad part is that I saw something recently where Stephen Smith, that sports news guy has made this comment about Kamala Harris, like if I hear her say one more time, she told you so. And the thing that I think is interesting is like, you do have these women, in this case, a black woman, who actually has the credentials to weigh in on something in proximity or juxtaposition to these white women who don't have the credentials. And what is that about? Jenny (07:56): Well, again, I think it's part of that world and the role that white women have taken on, where it's this double bind where I would say it is privileged and power, or maybe privileged without the power, but it is still sacrificial and it always will be. And I think of like the qualifications, the men, many of them aren't qualified for the roles that they're taking on, but they're likely not going to be sacrificed in the same way that the women will. And I think part of that structure is the cult of domesticity, that white women represent this demure, trad wife aesthetic. So if you get these purity culture-esque white women up there, it's going to make sense in the psyche of people that have been conditioned in Christian nationalism to see this as innocent and pure and good and not question the impacts that those women are actually having in the decisions and the actions that they're doing. Rebecca (09:14): That makes a lot of sense in the case of Pam Bonding particularly and Danielle's going Epstein, Epstein, Epstein in chat. It's about the third time. Now it's in all caps, right? (09:38): Yeah. I think it makes a lot of sense in the case of Pam Bondi in the role she took on in the Epstein hearing and her just like, "No, I won't turn around and look at these women. No, I will not acknowledge." And if in the American psyche, that face, that voice, that body saying there's nothing to see here is acceptable, then we don't have to have this conversation anymore. Rebecca (10:16): Yeah. And I'm not sure anymore quite what to do with the Epstein files. There's a lot of energy around all of this is a distraction from that. And I have a hard time in my mind trying to figure out what is in it that is so bad that you would start a war so the story doesn't come out. What I can imagine is like, "Yeah, well, that isn't new and it won't surprise anybody." So what is there that I can't imagine if that's even a fair sort of frame for this? (11:08): I think people are getting lost in the binary of it's the Epstein Files or it's something else. I think it's absolutely that in part. And what is happening right now has been a fever dream of the Christian right since at least the 1970s and apocalyptic readings of the Book of Revelation and certain interpretations that have said, "If Israel takes over all of this land, then Jesus is going to come back," was the rhetoric I grew up with. After nine eleven, it was like most exciting that war was breaking out in the Middle East because this meant that we were ushering in the kingdom of God. And so that is not, not part of it, right? When the military gets sent these letters saying that God has ordained Trump and that    Well, first I guess I would have to believe that there was or is an actual political dialogue taking place that I could potentially be a part of. And honestly, I'm not sure that I believe that.

As we transition from Black History Month to Women's History Month, I've chosen a topic that encompasses both, a topic that addresses a major misconception in American history. What role did white women actually play in enslaving people? For a very long time, historians assumed that women were merely passive enslavers. They enslaved because their husbands enslaved. They were involved only because of their roles as housekeepers. But, when we look at the actual evidence - documents, letters, interviews, etc. - we are forced to consider another reality. In many cases, white women played an active, possibly even dominant, role in buying, selling, punishing, and hiring out enslaved people. The Context of White Supremacy welcomes Admitted Racist Dr. Katherine Blaesing. Classified as a White Woman, Dr. Blaesing is “the Director of Community Well-Being” at San Francisco's The Hamlin School. “She is passionate about the inextricable link between holistic health and both anti-bias and anti-racism tenets and understandings,” and just finished “completing her Doctorate in Anti-Racist Policy and Leadership at American University.” Gus T. recently located her 2025 dissertation for said doctorate, No One Questions My Presence Here: White Women in Higher Education. The report cites a number of former C.O.W.S. guests - including Dr. Joe Feagin, Dr. Charles W. Mills, and Dr. Frank Wilderson to name a few. Ostensibly, Dr. Blaesing examines how she and other White Women maintain and refine the System of White Supremacy. However, her works greatly minimizes White Women's central culpability in pipelining black boys to greater confinement. Her work neglects to address if White people are going to voluntarily desist with the practice of White Supremacy. She also suggests that White people feel “guilty” about mistreating black people. Where is the evidence? We'll ask how White Women satisfy their “sadomasochistic” desires while failing black students. Importantly, Dr. Blaesing tried to suggest that Gus T. tricked her into a conversation under false pretenses. From Fear to Friendship: The 30-Year Journey of an Interracial Women's Circle What does it really take for women across race, identity, and experience to move from awkward conversations to real friendship? In this episode, I talk with two people I deeply respect—Julie O'Mara and Dr. Sid Reel—about a women's circle I'm part of  that's been meeting for nearly 30 years. What started as a conference breakout session turned into something far more rare: a space where white women and women of color stayed in relationship through grief, anger, mistakes, growth, and joy. The Context of White Supremacy welcomes Camilo Eugenio Lund-Montaño live from Puerto Rico. Gus intends to find out right quick of Lund-Montaño is classified as a White person. White reading Evelyn Williams' Inadmissible Evidence in the Katherine Massey Book Club, Gus was struck by her commentary on the influx of White lawyers during the so called Civil Rights Movement. Williams was suspicious of their presence and wondered if their primary objective was to bolster their White reputations by representing “militant” negroes or if they were in some way connected to the widespread COINTELPRO campaigns of subversion to undermine attempts to Produce Justice. This led Gus to find Lund-Montaño's report: Out of Order: Radical Lawyers and Social Movements in the Cold War. This work examines the history of mostly White lawyers involvements with numerous non-white people and campaigns during the 1900s. It highlights how the National Lawyer's Guild, the American Bar Association, and the field of law in general was - and remains - overwhelmingly White and insufficiently concerned with countering Racism or aiding non-white attorneys and judges. It's noteworthy that NLG switched their focus to issues of sexism/White Women in the middle of the so called Civil Rights Movement. The Katherine Massey Book Club @ The C.O.W.S. hosts the 3rd study session on William Rosenau's Tonight We Bombed The US Capitol. Gus T. first nabbed this book nearly two years previously while we were reading Harry Dunn's Standing My Ground - which details the January 6th, 2021 Terrorist Insurrection at the US Capitol Building. Dunn reminds readers that gangs of White hooligans previously attacked the Capitol building. Rosenau's non-fiction investigation provides comprehensive details about the Whites who carried out this violent behavior - which also included their participation in breaking Assata Shakur out of a New Jersey prison. This read may help us better understand the current group of Whites loosely branded "Antifa" and allow us to reconsider most non-white people's bedrock belief that: "Not All White People Are Racist." Last week, we learned how this gang of White lesbians were recruited by Dr. Matulu Shakur to help with "expropriating" funds from banks to bolster the Black Liberation Army. Gus thought it was significant that these White chicks identified themselves as the "White Edge." We learned about the life and times of William Morales, a member of the Puerto Rican "independence" effort who bombed numerous US facilities and is suspected of killing several people.
