Authentic relationships between Black and white women in higher education are often difficult to cultivate—made more so by the persistent realities of misogynoir and the role white women can play in perpetuating harm. In this powerful episode, co-hosted by Heather Shea and Raechele Pope, we're joined by Drs. Christina Holmgren, Leah Fulton, and Jayne Sommers to explore the preliminary findings of their ongoing research with Black women in student affairs. Together, they share stories, insights, and a new model for building reciprocal, accountable relationships that move us beyond performative allyship and toward real connection and change.

NOTE: This week's episode may not be easy to listen to, and it may make people uncomfortable. But it's important. If we want to unpack our misogyny, we must also unpack our racism. Please listen with an open mind and heart.    Recently, a creator called the White Woman Whisperer made a video about how white women are often the "nice guys" of women. While this may be hard to hear, in the episode, we break down why it's quite accurate.    Our guest this week is Jamila Bradley, an incredible creator, activist, and proud person of color who was criticized after posting a video about the Met Gala. And these attacks weren't coming just from strangers. They were coming from the very women who called themselves allies. These white women were happy to engage and support Jamila's feminist content. But the second Jamila brought race into the conversation, these "allies" became adversaries. A feeling all too familiar for Jamila and other people of color.    JAMILA'S LINKS Linktree Youtube

As DEI comes under political and cultural scrutiny, the hosts make the case that there is no trauma-informed approach without embracing DEI.DEI is not optional for trauma-informed practice—it is essential.Diversity includes more than race: gender, neurodiversity, age, ability, and lived experience.Equity means adjusting systems and supports so everyone can thrive.Privilege isn't shameful—it's an opportunity to advocate and build awareness.Systems can either heal or harm—it's up to us to make them more inclusive.Diverse environments enhance safety, fairness, innovation, and connection.

In a less psychotic episode, Kaya talks about Michelle Buteau's perfect second season of Survival of the Thickest and the different character arcs on the show. She also wants to know why did white woken abandon Bridget Jones? Because there's a third movies and no one's seems to give a fuck about it which is kinda crazy because it used to be like a white woman's version of Waiting To Exchale or at least that's what the vibes led me to believe. What can your workplace do to celebrate holidays like Women's History Month the “right” way? Whether you're proud of how your organization shows support for marginalized groups in the workplace or feel like it could be doing more, my conversation with DEI educator and Ampersand Workspace founder Veronique Porter is just as (if not more) relevant today as when it first aired in May of 2023. Veronique shares what her experience as a Black American woman, her education in international development and American studies and culture, and her work as a facilitator has taught her about the best way to approach this often fraught topic—a way to create company events and initiatives for heritage holidays that uphold both company and employee values and stand to make a real difference.Learn how your organization can host outstanding and inclusive cultural events:Why workplace wokeness doesn't detract from the financial bottom line (and actually does the opposite); The significance of spending money and resources on heritage events; Why it's vital to give every employee the chance to get involved; The importance of getting clear on the company's values before diving in.Related Links:McKinsey: These Women Experience the Highest Levels of Microaggressions - https://www.mckinsey.com/featured-insights/sustainable-inclusive-growth/chart-of-the-day/these-women-experience-the-highest-levels-of-workplace-microaggressionsNew York Times, “Google Calendar Deletes Women's History Month and Other Cultural Events” - https://www.nytimes.com/2025/02/12/technology/google-black-history-womens-history.htmlThe Art of Gathering by Priya Parker - https://bookshop.org/p/books/the-art-of-gathering-how-we-meet-and-why-it-matters-priya-parker/588739?ean=9781594634932&next=tThe Bossed Up Sports Reference case study - https://www.bossedup.org/forteamsMorgan Freeman on why he doesn't want a 'Black History Month' - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MpnpIhqSLtoEpisode 304, White Fragility, White Women's Tears, and Dismantling White Supremacy - https://www.bossedup.org/podcast/episode304Connect with Veronique Porter on LinkedIn - https://www.linkedin.com/in/veroniqueporter/Learn more about Ampersand Workspace - https://ampersand-workspace.com/LEVEL UP: a Leadership Accelerator for Women on the Rise - https://www.bossedup.org/levelupBossed Up Courage Community - https://www.facebook.com/groups/927776673968737/Bossed Up LinkedIn Group - https://www.linkedin.com/groups/7071888/
