Today, I'm joined by Gay Gaddis, a founder, artist, and author who is best known for growing T3 from scratch to the largest independent female-owned ad agency in the U.S. At the height of a country-wide recession in 1989, Gay quit her job and cashed in her $16,000 IRA to go all in on starting her ad agency. Soon after landing her first 3 clients, Gay signed Dell to T3. As it positioned itself on the cutting edge of internet marketing in the 1990s, T3 continued to grow. In 2019, Gay sold T3 after growing it to more than $40M in annual net revenue. Now, Gay is a successful painter, the best-selling author of “Cowgirl Power: How to Kick Ass in Business & Life,” and the founder of “Women Who Mean Business,” a women's development program at the University of Texas. Gay's story is all about taking risks, figuring it out, and betting on yourself. In today's episode, Gay shares how she bootstrapped her business from $0 to $40M+, advice for taking growth-oriented risks, and the challenges of exiting a business that has become an extension of who you are. Key Takeaways with Gay Gaddis How Gay went from art to advertising Starting an agency from zero and scaling to $44M How to look at hiring talent The path from $1M to $10M Prioritizing curiosity in new hires Building a business that allows for risk-taking When to turn down high-paying clients Selling a business despite not wanting to The effect of an earnout on an exit The evolution of female entrepreneurship How to handle employees who aren't the right fit Gay's painting and writing endeavors   Get the full show notes here: https://beyondamillion.com/101 Subscribe to the Podcast We hope you enjoy this episode and that you find some golden nuggets within this interview. Gay Gaddis is a very close family friend. She has literally watched me grow up. Her son Ben introduced my sister to her husband. Now that I am a grown woman, I have had the chance to really understand what a badass Gay is. She started T3, the largest owned female owned digital marketing agency in the country, based out of Austin Texas. She is self made and overcame many obstacles in a man’s world, but always learned how to work smarter, more thoughtful and outside of the box. As an employer of many women, and a mother herself, she quickly realized being a parent should not stop you from being a successful working professional. So she created UNDER, a program that allowed parents to bring their kids to work. That’s the thing with Gay. She doesn’t view family and work as 2 separate entities. She wants her employees to be fulfilled and she takes the time to find their strengths. If she hires someone for one reason but realizes they work better on another team, she pays attention and moves them to where they thrive. She is also an artist, painting many Texas landscapes, an author of COWGIRL POWER, a book written to help women develop personal power and lead like fearless cowgirls, and a rancher. Gay offers so much wisdom to women especially about how to preserve, find your way and thrive in big industry. Learn more about your ad-choices at https://news.iheart.com/podcast-advertisers

Gay Gaddis is Founder and CEO of T3, an advertising agency dedicated to helping clients build useful brands and create meaningful relationships with their customers. T3 is now one of the largest, female owned advertising agencies serving the Fortune 200, but it wasn’t always this way... In the late 1980’s when the economy was suffering badly, Gay was working for an advertising agency and saw that things needed to be done differently. In order to save her job and the company, she decided to write a business plan that she was confident would lead them down the right path. However, when she tried to move forward with her plan, she met opposition from her boss. She was faced with a critical decision: stay with her current job or go someplace else. “When I went home that evening, I realized that someplace else was going to have to be my place.” It was a critical decision for her as she withdrew a $16,000 check from her IRA to start what would become T3. Gay and her husband had 3 kids at the time and were strapped financially, so failure was not an option. Gay was determined to make the company work and quickly went to work securing new clients. To this day, Gay has never borrowed any money for T3 and has bootstrapped the entire business. Fast forward to 1992, Gay and the team at T3 were working with Dell, who at the time was still a fairly small sized company. T3 and Dell grew up together in the coming of the Internet age and worked on their first online marketing campaigns together. “We had been a results driven agency from day one. That was my business plan, to measure everything we did. My concept was to get the great results but also do really wonderful, creative work that would delight people, excite people, and create those emotional connections.” Her ability to marry both the data and metrics with creative and innovate ideas is what has continued to prove successful for T3. Gay recently finished her first book, Cowgirl Power, to share her story as a woman in business. Gay grew up on a ranch, horseback riding as a young girl, and her book tells stories of women with grit and power living in the Old West, a traditionally male-dominated time. In this episode, Chad and Gay discuss T3’s founding story, the sacrifices Gay had to make along way to ensure the companies’ success, and how her cowgirl upbringing has helped her manage risk in business. – Mission Daily and all of our podcasts are created with love by our team at Mission.org. Here’s a fun piece of trivia for you: In the heyday of cowboys, in the early 1900s, one of the best lassoing and roping cowboys was, well, actually a cowgirl! Her name was Lucille Mulhall, and at just 14, she was so good at cowgirling that she was invited to compete in a Rough Riders rodeo, with Teddy Roosevelt cheering her on, no less. After taking first place, Lucille went on to create her own touring show. While many embraced her, the media wasn’t sure what to call her. While her skills often exceeded those of cowboys, at least one newspaper referred to her as the “lassoer in lingerie,” even though she was quite clothed. This got me thinking that women have even tougher skin when we’re pursuing exactly what we want. This cowgirl just wanted to ride a horse instead of sipping a dainty cup of tea. And despite others’ opinions, she more than proved her mettle. Today, take Lucille’s story as a little inspiration. Rally your inner cowgirl and trot your own way!
