Newt talks with Brett Baier, chief political anchor for Fox News Channel, about his new book "To Rescue the American Spirit: Teddy Roosevelt and the Birth of a Superpower." Baier, known for his passion for presidential biographies, discusses the historical significance of Theodore Roosevelt, highlighting his role in expanding America's global influence and his larger-than-life persona. Their conversation touches on Roosevelt's achievements, such as brokering peace in the Russo-Japanese War and his leadership style exemplified by the Rough Riders. Baier draws parallels between Roosevelt and modern figures like Donald Trump, noting their shared charisma and unconventional approaches. The discussion also covers Roosevelt's progressive policies, his impact on American culture, and his adventurous spirit, including his perilous Amazon expedition. Baier's book tour and his approach to balancing his career in news with writing are also discussed.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
“This captivating portrayal of Teddy is Bret Baier's gift to us. From Roosevelt's resilience over tragedy to his heroism in war, from his midnight rambles as police commissioner to his dramatic fights for reform as governor and president, Baier summons the irrepressible spirit of the man. What an engaging storyteller! What a joy to read!” —Doris Kearns GoodwinFrom #1 New York Times bestselling author and Fox News Channel's Chief Political Anchor, a fresh and fascinating exploration of the extraordinary life of Teddy Roosevelt, revealing how his bold leadership thrust America onto the world stage and changed the course of world history."As Bret Baier shows in this wonderfully readable biography, Theodore Roosevelt has many lessons for today." —Walter IsaacsonThere has never been a president like Theodore Roosevelt. An iconoclast shaped by fervent ideals, his early life seems ripped from the pages of an adventure novel: abandoning his place in the New York aristocracy, he was drawn to the thrill of the West, becoming an honorary cowboy who won the respect of the rough men of the plains, adopting their code of authenticity and courage. As a New York State legislator, he fought corruption and patronage. As New York City police commissioner, he walked the beat at night to hold his men accountable; and as New York governor, he butted heads with the old guard to bring fresh air to a state mired in political corruption. He was also a passionate naturalist, conservationist, and hunter who collected hundreds of specimens of birds and animals throughout his life. He was a soldier and commander who led a regiment of “Rough Riders” to victory in the Spanish-American War, a show of leadership and bravery that put him on the national map. As president, he brought energy, laughter, and bold ideas to the White House, pursuing a vigorous agenda that established America as a leader on the world stage —from advancing the Panama Canal, brokering peace with Russia, and taking on business elites.Bret Baier's exquisite book reveals the storied life of a leader whose passion, daring, and prowess left an indelible mark on the fabric of our country and reimagined the possibilities of the presidency. https://www.bretbaier.com/to-rescue-the-american-spirit/Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/i-am-refocused-radio--2671113/support.Thank you for tuning in to I Am Refocused Radio. Monday afternoon means a fresh episode of Real Life was recorded, edited, and is ready to help you kick off your workweek. On today's podcast, the guys discussed Tyler's big betting weekend, the Elks' victory over the Roughriders, Connor McDavid's contract status, and explored other topics that arose. The guys started the Monday episode of Real Life with a discussion about a variety of random topics, including the COVID-19 hockey bubble and weird memories from that period in time. Needless to say, talking about sports during COVID times almost feels alien, given how everything is long back to normal less than five years later. Talking sports led Tyler to talk about his Saturday at the Elks game, and how it was an electric finish for both the team and his wallet.Changing gears, the guys walked through their squad ride bet for the Ryder Cup and how the weekend was not only entertaining but also profitable. The guys also discussed the player feedback after the tournament was done, and whether the crowd was getting too carried away with their chirps and barbs for the European players. Part of the discussion also centred on whether the noise was worse because the tournament took place in New York, an area known for its aggressive fans, even at the best of times. Finally, the guys wrapped up the Monday episode of Real Life with a random collection of topics, including the Connor McDavid contract situation, body language, and whether we're still reading way too much into the situation despite him still being unsigned. Sticking with contract discussions, the guys wrapped up the Monday episode of Real Life by wondering what is going on around the league and whether the other unsigned deals are making the same kind of waves.
