Show SummaryOn today's episode, we're featuring a conversation with Navy Veteran and military spouse Melissa Washington. Melissa is the CEO of the Women Veterans Alliance, Women Veterans Giving, and publisher of Women Veterans Magazine. Provide FeedbackAs a dedicated member of the audience, we would like to hear from you about the show. Please take a few minutes to share your thoughts about the show in this short feedback survey. By doing so, you will be entered to receive a signed copy of one of our host's three books on military and veteran mental health. About Today's GuestMelissa Washington, Navy Veteran, Founder & CEO: Award-winning advocate, speaker, author, entrepreneur, CEO, publisher, Radio Show Host, and proud Navy veteran Melissa A. Washington wears many hats. Yet woven throughout her diverse pursuits is a mission of service—and a passion to empower her fellow women veterans. The daughter of a Bronze Star Army Vietnam War veteran, Melissa grew up in San Francisco's East Bay. Fiercely independent as a child, she spent many afternoons in her family's video store, developing an early sense of business acumen. That enterprising spirit continued into her teenage years when Melissa began training for a career in early childhood education while still in high school. But something else sparked in Melissa just as she was finishing her certification. Seeking to expand her world and serve her country, the 18-year-old enlisted in the Navy, spending three years on active duty and five years in the reserve. She did a 6-month "Med Cruise" and a 6-month "West Pac" deployment during her active duty. That formative experience set her life on a completely new trajectory—not only taking her across the globe and teaching her vital lessons but also introducing Melissa to her husband and, ultimately, inspiring her to transform thousands of lives. In the mid-nineties, she chose to leave the Navy early, having witnessed the burdens that come with a dual-service family. While her husband would remain in the Marine Corps for 21 years, Melissa embarked on a new path, earning her bachelor's degree in business management. She followed with a decade-long career in corporate recruiting and human resources, working with such entities as Nissan, Oracle, Tickets.com, Randstad, and the 2002 Winter Olympics. But in 2009, amid The Great Recession, Melissa was laid off. Despite the setback, she relied on her military training—which taught her to be adaptable and resourceful—and her innate sense of resilience. Above all, Melissa saw an opportunity to reinvent herself once again.Initially, she held LinkedIn workshops from her dining room table, imparting her vital knowledge to others. Soon, she was hosting larger workshops, which eventually grew into speaking engagements with hundreds of attendees. In 2011, she established Melissa Washington, Inc., a consulting service catering to businesses and individuals that incorporates LinkedIn for research, recruiting, job seeking, and collaboration. After four years at LinkedIn, where Melissa managed global meetings, she returned to her entrepreneurial roots. But this time, she focused on her fellow women veterans. A natural networker, Melissa initially sought to connect with her peers outside of traditional veterans' organizations. Yet, the more meetups she planned, the more she realized the need for a dedicated support system for women veterans. In 2015, what started as a local meetup turned into Women Veterans Alliance—a global organization that seeks to empower and positively impact the lives of women veterans. Three years later, she established the nonprofit wing of WVA, Women Veterans Giving. Both entities offer women veterans opportunities to gain valuable career experience and successfully integrate back into civilian life. WVG also helps fund women veteran-owned businesses, which other organizations often overlook. To date, they have awarded over $20k to women in veteran-owned businesses. In 2016, created and produced the first "Women Veterans Unconference."  Developed The Beyond Call of Duty Award Honoring Sgt Nicole Gee to honor and recognize the women in our communities. In 2021, Melissa expanded her role in the community by co-founding Women Veterans Magazine—the first publication of its kind to address the issues affecting women veterans and provide them with local and national resources. Aside from serving as CEO of WVA and WVG and publisher of Women Veterans Magazine, Melissa stays busy as an in-demand public speaker whose topics range from Maximizing Impact to Unlocking the Power of Purpose. She speaks regularly at conferences and events around the country and has spoken at over 100 events—presenting for the likes of Marriott, the Urban League, Blue Diamond, and IMEX America. Melissa has also appeared on the Dr. Phil Show and the Lifetime Channel's The Balancing Act, as well as on SiriusXM, iHeartRadio, ABC, NBC, CBS, and Fox, among others.Additionally, Melissa is the author of Get Back to Work: Smart & Savvy Real-World Strategies to Make Your Next Career Move (FriesenPress, 2014). And Unstoppable: Being Fierce, Fearless & Unf*ckwithable in Life and Business, based on her experiences with WVA, which offers practical advice on creating a meet-up group and becoming an influencer within one's community (Brave Healer Productions, 2022).A longtime resident of Northern California, Melissa was a 2011 recipient of the Sacramento Business Journal's prestigious 40 Under 40 award and was among the Journal's Women Who Mean Business honorees in 2017. She has also been recognized by the National Association of Women Business Owners with an Outstanding Women Leader Visionary Award and received the 2016 Soroptimist Ruby Award, which recognizes women helping women. In 2019, she received the Center for Women Veterans' Trailblazer Award.   In 2022, she received her first Federal Appointment to the Small Business Administration Advisory Committee on Veteran Business Affairs (ACVBA).   In 2022, Thrive Causemetics Inc. featured a "Melissa" Warm Sienna Sheer Strength Hydrating Lip Tint to honor her infinite impact on the community.   In 2023, she started Veteran.Events to provide event services to the veteran and military community. Outside of work, Melissa enjoys spending quality time with her husband, Jarrod, and daughter, Maya. In addition to being an avid genealogist, Melissa loves vacationing with her family—particularly trips that involve a beach. Her grandfather, a WWII Army Air Corps/Air Force Veteran who received the Bronze Star and Air Medal with Oak Leaf Clusters, served in the 509th Bomb Squad AC in the Eastern European Theater with 37 missions over Germany. Her husband is a retired Marine who served in combat in Desert Shield, Desert Storm, and Operation Iraqi Freedom (OIF).Links Mentioned in this Episode Women Veterans Alliance Web SitePsychArmor Resource of the WeekFor this week's PsychArmor resource of the week is the PsychArmor course, Women Veterans Series. When you're running a mission-driven business, marketing is about more than just landing new clients–it's about getting your message out to more people. Celina Shands is an expert at helping her clients tell their brand story and communicate their value to potential customers, partners, and funders. As CEO of Full Capacity Marketing, Celina is the 2017 Marketing CEO of the Year in the Pacific Coast USA, a former American Marketing Association Marketer of the Year, and a two-time Women Who Mean Business finalist. For the past 25 years, she's been a strong advocate for workforce education and economic development missions.  As a communications expert, Celina has helped more than 500 workforce development and K-12/post-secondary education organizations build high-performing outreach campaigns that empower vulnerable populations, students and job seekers to embrace their potential.  Finding the Best Marketing Strategy for Your Business After 25+ years experience in workforce development and marketing, Celina says she still follows the same process with all of her agency clients.  The first step is to sit down and define what problem the business is trying to solve in the market and what their unique selling proposition is. From there, the agency performs market research to understand the psychographics of the client's target audience. Customers are inundated with marketing messages so it's essential to use data to cut through the nose.  The last step is to add outreach strategies, which may involve a new website with search engine optimization (SEO), paid ads, or PR. The best strategy will depend on where your ideal client spends their time online. Relationship-Building and Word-of-Mouth Born and raised in North Carolina, Celina approaches business like a true southerner by putting relationships first. Up to 97% of her agency clients come from word-of-mouth referrals. From the early days of her business, Celina has prioritized her sense of mission and helping others. She built her network through email outreach, phone calls, and speaking at conferences. To this day, the company has never run an advertising campaign. Instead, Celina shares information freely with her audience through email newsletters, blogs, and ebooks. This educational approach has resulted in long-term, repeat customers–many of whom have become like family. Tips for Running a Remote Team Celina's agency is fully remote and has been from the beginning–something she sees as an inherent advantage. Not only does working remotely save on overhead costs, but it also promotes greater communication between team members. Celina's team works across several different time zones, but she's flexible on when her employees work, as long as they continue to deliver results.  Although these days there are many tools for remote work, technology alone isn't enough to ensure the success of your virtual team. It's equally as important for the CEO to set the tone and culture. You need to have systems and processes in place, and communicate clear expectations at the start of every project. Establishing key milestones will help keep everyone on track, and your team will appreciate having the freedom to work on their own schedule. Enjoy this episode with CEO and Marketing Expert Celina Shands…  Quotes “The reason why we're called Full Capacity Marketing is because I want each of our clients to be at full capacity long after our contract concludes.” “If you position yourself as a partner versus a vendor, you have more opportunities that come in. That's why we do things like ebooks, teaching, and things of that nature. Whether you work with us or not, we want you to succeed, especially in those missions.” “I can't say we've had all this success intentionally. We set the course as best as possible and then go with the flow and see what opportunities come up.” “PR strategies are fantastic for entrepreneurs–getting them out there, getting their voice, and having a connection in the community.”  “How does your business not only solve a problem, but connect to a bigger mission that is of value and relevance in the community or the markets that you serve?”  “My grandma always said, ‘No one can argue with results.'” “There's room for everybody. It's not a competitive thing, even though you're trying to be unique in your own way. It's really about being authentic." She is a passionate entrepreneur who grew her company from one to 13 stores in only 14 years and now leads a multimillion-dollar business that employs more than 300 people. She is dedicated to maintaining a strong corporate culture and is selling her company to her teammates through an ESOP. Gina's big passion is developing urban markets, supporting small businesses, and helping women succeed in all aspects of the hardware industry. She has tirelessly focused on the “Return to Main Street” movement in her city of Washington, D.C., to promote Shop Local campaigns and community revitalization in urban areas. Gina has received numerous accolades for her many accomplishments, including being the recipient of the Women Who Mean Business award from the Washington Business Journal of 2009, being recognized as an industry Top Gun in 2011 by the National Retail Hardware Association, being honored by Profiles in Diversity Journal as one of its Women Worth Watching in 2013 and recognized by Hardware and Building Supply Dealer as one of 14 of the 2016 “People of the Year.” Her book, Recovery Hardware, was published in 2022 and chronicles her business growth and the lessons she learned from hiring folks in recovery – proving that leaders can build a business in non-traditional ways. Episode in a Tweet: I am a far better leader because I am open to learning from non-traditional teachers. Second chances transform communities and change lives—and they often start with one business at a time. Background: I absolutely love this interview. Gina Schafer is one of the most inspiring leaders I've had the pleasure of meeting. We can all learn from her vision, gumption, grit, and compassion. Not only did she open an Ace Hardware store in a rundown but regentrifying community in Washington DC with no prior experience with hardware, she and her husband built their business by giving those in addiction recovery a chance to change their lives and find meaning and purpose in their work. Her compassion touches my heart – I, too, know what it's like to have a second chance at getting things right. During the episode, Gina shares how she grew her Ace Hardware store empire to 13 stores, even though she had never touched a power tool in her life. She tells us how she hired a person in recovery without knowing it before he joined the company and how he taught her many things about life, hardware, and second chances. Gina and her husband also decided to sell their stores to their employees through an ESOP (Employee Stock Ownership Plan) and why she hopes that someday Ace Hardware DC will employ millionaire cashiers. Gina is no doubt proof that one can build a business in a non-traditional way. This heartful interview will surely inspire you. Please have a listen and let me know what you think! Sally has 25 years of experience in the A/E/C industry and was named by the Atlanta Business Chronicle in 2020 to their List of Women Who Mean Business. Sally was recognized as one of the most influential women in A/E/C in Georgia 2018-2022. She was named to the “40 under 40” list of leading professionals by Georgia Trend magazine and she was recently appointed to the Urban Land Institute's America's Women's Leadership Initiative Committee.Sally's career journey has been filled with success and she's long been recognized as a strong leader. She attributes her leadership skills to being involved in team sports in her youth and dives into the lessons she learned being a fast-pitch pitcher on her softball team. She is proud to be a woman in the STEM field and works to lift other women up in traditionally male dominated industries. Today's episode will leave you feeling empowered and ready to step outside of your comfort zone and into a position or career path you might be thinking about.Memorable Moments:4:50- When you're playing team sports, you learn early on how not only to lead but support, how to cheer others on. It's something where every person on the team is a critical component to your success. So it's the same thing here at work.7:29- So the biggest thing that I always tell people is to be responsive and communicate. That is one of the biggest things that will help a project or help a client understand where you are with the project. If you don't communicate with them, you're not responsive, or you don't pick up the phone, it lends to a lot of problems that perhaps you could have nipped in the bud, to begin with.12:18- I feel like it is so important, especially for women, to raise your hand, get involved in those leadership roles, don't just be a member or participate, really get involved. There are not enough women out there that get involved with nonprofit organizations, professional organizations that really raise their hand and say, “Hey, I want the opportunity to lead”.21:42- One thing that I have to say is women are strong, we're resilient. I feel very, very honored and privileged to be here at Lowe, I'm the only female partner.27:05- I really never thought I would be in a STEM field growing up; I thought I was going to be on Broadway or a news anchor or something like that, but, you know, it is possible.36:00- Put yourself in the arena, make yourself bigger, you know, and at the end of the day, it's you that counts. You're your own worst critic, and you're probably the one that holds holding yourself back in the long run.Connect with Nancy:Instagram: https://instagram.com/nancysurakLinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/nancysurak/Website: www.nancysurak.comConnect with Sally:LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/sally-riker-f-same-1b1a1943/Website: https://loweengineers.com/Sally's Book Recommendation:Daring Greatly Brene Brown via Amazon: https://amzn.to/3OAbK8TShe's WILD Sound production by:Luke Surak, Surak Productions: surakproductions@gmail.com

This week, we present two stories about respect in science — how we get it and how we keep it. Part 1: Meisa Salaita's brand-new PhD in chemistry isn't much help as she prepares to teach ninth-grade physics. Part 2: Early in her career, astronomer Jackie Faherty's work is stunned when a senior researcher eviscerates her work at a conference. Meisa Salaita has made it her mission to help others see and appreciate the beauty of science by making it a part of everyday cultural experiences. Through her work founding and directing the non-profit Science ATL, she spends her days bringing people together through the wonder of science by creating public science events like the Atlanta Science Festival. Meisa also writes, has produced radio stories, and hosted TV shows — all in the name of science. In addition to her work with Science ATL, Meisa is a producer for The Story Collider, a science storytelling podcast. Meisa has a Ph.D. in chemistry from Northwestern, and has been named by the Atlanta Business Chronicle as one of their "Women Who Mean Business" and by Atlanta Magazine as one of their "Women Making a Mark". Jackie Faherty is a senior scientist and senior education manager at the American Museum of Natural History (AMNH). Her research group entitled “Brown Dwarfs in New York City (BDNYC)” is at the forefront of low mass star, brown dwarf and giant exoplanet characterization studies. She is also co-founder of the successful citizen science project called “Backyard Worlds: Planet 9” which has involved over 150,000 volunteers in searches for previously missed cold components of the nearby solar neighborhood. Dr. Faherty has over 100 peer-reviewed papers in Astrophysical journals and has won numerous awards or grants from private and national foundations such as NASA and the NSF. She is also a regular science communicator having consulted on stories that ran in the NY Times, the Wall Street journal, NPR, and on national television. In her position at AMNH, Faherty strives to create more opportunities for underrepresented minorities to enter STEM through unique outreach endeavors.  Learn more about your ad choices. On this week's episode, luxury footwear brand creator, Angela Scott of The Office of Angela Scott, joins Tracy to discuss the relentless pursuit of her calling in life and why she is compelled to heed the call. Angela's story is one of true entrepreneurial grit. Starting from childhood, she was raised in the foster care system due to their mother's schizophrenia diagnosis. Angela used these challenging childhood experiences to her benefit, and capitalized on her ability to persevere, and forged ahead into an entrepreneurial vision by surrounding herself with mentors and allies who helped her stay the course and keep her business tracking.  Angela also shares how she funded her business and the importance of asking for help and being vulnerable in business. Finally, she reviews the key learnings she has discovered thus far in her journey and her love for creating shoes and empowering Women Who Mean Business.™ Stay tuned for this truly inspiring entrepreneurial powerhouse interview!   IN THIS EPISODE: [02:46] A look into Angela's childhood. [05:02] Growing up as part of the foster care system because of Angela's mother's schizophrenia. [09:48] Angela always had an entrepreneurial spirit as she worked hard from a young age. [16:45] Angela's journey into adulthood feeling that fashion was in her DNA. [22:06] How Angela pivoted from working at Neiman Marcus to opening The Office of Angela Scott. [48:24] Is there anything Angela sees in hindsight that she'd go back to and coach herself differently in her journey?   KEY TAKEAWAYS: From a young age, Angela understood what the meaning of hard work meant, knowing that if she wanted to have experiences in life, she had to work for them.   Fashion was always a big part in Angela's life. Before she knew fashion was going to be her career, she knew she was going to work hard in order to be able to buy fashion pieces. Angela's first mentor helped give her insight on how hard she should work toward her goals while doing it with elegance and intention. Angela took her lowest paying job ever at Neiman Marcus, because she knew that's what she needed to do in order for her to understand the fashion industry. The Office of Angela Scott is no longer just a shoe brand. It's a business of curating, understanding and being a platform for other women. It's a collective of powerhouse women who wear her product, identify her story with their own personal brand, and empowers working women to own their stories.    CONNECT WITH US: Find Angela on Instagram and at  Theofficeofangelascott.com Check out our website, Potential to Powerhouse, for more details and to learn about past, present, and future guests. Janine K. Iannarelli   Janine K. Iannarelli is the founder and president of Par Avion Ltd. She has more than 30 years of business aviation experience representing numerous corporations and private individuals worldwide with the sale and purchase of business aircraft. Par Avion is an aircraft marketing firm that specializes in the exclusive representation and acquisition of aircraft with an emphasis on pre-owned business jets valued upwards of $65,000,000 (USD).   Ms. Iannarelli has extensive experience in cross-border transactions, with nearly 90 percent of Par Avion’s business concentrated in this area of specialization. The scope of her experience with aircraft sales transactions reaches well beyond the procurement process in that she has in-depth interactions with the OEMs, maintenance facilities and completion centers specific to these aircraft. Ms. Iannarelli also works directly with designated representatives of the Federal Aviation Administration as well as with many other countries’ civil aviation authorities where she has placed or procured aircraft.   One of many notable adventures in Ms. Iannarelli’s career was her involvement in the ferrying of a Falcon 10 and 100 from the tip of South Africa to Texas in 1997. Making this adventure unique was that Ms. Iannarelli was surely the first woman aircraft broker to undertake this endeavor. The range of these airplanes dictated that a number of stops en route would need to be made, particularly on the African continent, traveling within range of then war-torn countries and negotiating with local ground support whose first language is French. The experience included traversing the Sahara Desert, the Atlantic Ocean to the Canary Islands and on to Europe. The North Atlantic leg posed one of the greatest challenges given that flight planning is especially critical with a short-legged airplane.   A 1983 graduate of Montclair State University in Upper Montclair, N.J., Ms. Iannarelli earned a Bachelor of Science degree in business administration with a specific concentration in marketing and a minor in psychology. She studied the French Language at L’ALLIANCE FRANCAISE de Houston and earned continuing education credits from Rice University in Houston, Texas. She is a current member of the National Business Aviation Association (NBAA), European Business Aviation Association (EBAA), Women in Aviation, International, and the American Marketing Association. In February of 2016 Ms. Iannarelli was invited to serve on the EBAA Associate Member’s Sales and Acquisition committee providing expert input on international sales transactions and in March of 2017 was appointed its Chair. Ms. Iannarelli is listed at the NBAA Web site as a source “Available to Comment” to local, national and international media. She attends numerous industry–related seminars sponsored by the NBAA, Professional Aviation Maintenance Association (PAMA) and various manufacturers and aviation product vendors.   In January 2016, Ms. Iannarelli was reappointed and named presiding officer by Governor Greg Abbott to the Texas Aerospace and Aviation Advisory Committee to which she was originally appointed by former Governor Rick Perry. As one of 10 state-wide appointed committee members, she seeks out and encourages business development in the state, specific to her area of expertise. Included among the accolades and awards bestowed upon Ms. Iannarelli is being named a Great Woman of Texas by the Fort Worth Business Press in 2011; named by the Texas Women’s Chamber of Commerce as one of the final four for the Texas Business Woman of the Year, April 2016 and again in July 2017; one of three inducted into the Aviation Hall of Fame of New Jersey, September 2016; named among the “99” finalists for inclusion to the National Aviation Hall of Fame of Dayton, Ohio September 2016; honored by Texas Executive Women as a Woman on the Move November 2016; named by Enterprising Women Magazine as a 2017 Enterprising Women of the Year Champion. In 2017 Ms. Iannarelli was honored as one of the “Women Who Mean Business, Outstanding Leader in Professional Services” by the Houston Business Journal and one of four Houston area women for being leaders in STEM related fields by GirlStart. Houston Woman Magazine recently named her as one of Houston’s 50 Most Influential Women of 2017.   As a sought after mentor and inspirational advisor, she often speaks before women’s and youth organizations about career development and life skill sets necessary to navigate the business world. Ms. Iannarelli routinely serves as a reliable source on business aviation for local, regional, national and international media on a variety of business aviation and small business topics. She is a regular panelist and presenter at industry events that focus on current valuations and trends in the new and preowned global marketplace for aircraft.   Ms. Iannarelli is a passionate supporter of the arts and charities that benefit children and animals. She commits both her personal time and resources to these endeavors. In 2017 she was appointed to the Advisory Board of Houston PetSet and in 2018 to the Houston Girl Start Council. She is a past board member of Mercury, The Orchestra Redefined, and a sponsor of the Houston Police Department’s Mounted Patrol. For more than 25 years, she was a sponsor, board member, competitor and volunteer with The Pin Oak Charity Horse Show which benefits Texas Children’s Hospital and for which Ms. Iannarelli currently serves as an Ambassador. She is a founding member of the Peace Parks Foundation headquartered in Stellenbosch, South Africa. Additionally, Ms. Iannarelli is an avid cyclist and an accomplished equestrian who competed for over 30 years in the amateur divisions at hunter/jumper shows at the regional and national level in the United States. This is Beauty, Fashion and War! Hosted by Cleo Caban, a decorated war veteran whose spent almost a decade through out the Middle East as a Counter Intelligence Special Agent. Don?t get left behind!   Celeste Hilling Bio’s   Described by San Diego Magazine as giving the cosmetics industry a makeover, Celeste Hilling is an innovative, dynamic and respected expert on skin care, well-being, and brand loyalty. As CEO of Skin Authority, Hilling works with celebrities, fashion icons, beauty editors, and consumers worldwide to instill a passion for the company’s products and unique approach to the ultimate customer service experience. As a highly sought speaker on beauty, health, and self-esteem, Hilling presents hundreds of times per year around the globe. This respected media resource has been quoted by leading outlets including FOX News, NBC, ABC, The New York Times, Women’s Wear Daily, Forbes and BusinessWeek. She personally oversaw the launch of its grounding breaking SGF-4 Technology™ products designed around four natural nourishing proteins or skin growth factors, developed specifically to target and reprogram the aging process of skin cells. Working with world recognized leader the Dole Nutrition Institute, she also led the charge for making skin care an extension of good nutrition by introducing the first whole food source of Vitamin D in the VitaD Fortified™ series from Skin Authority. Her vision is to turn today’s passive skin care shopping experience into a high touch, high impact, personalized experience. Because of this, Hilling handpicks Skin Authority distribution partners from among the most prestigious retail and spa locations. Prior to launching Skin Authority, Hilling was key in developing two companies that were acquired by the leading publicly held company in its industry segment. In both instances, Hilling was a strategic officer: Steiner Leisure Ltd., as President/CEO of the Day Spa Group; and Compaq Computer Corporation as President, Consumer Software Business Unit and Vice President, Consumer Division. In addition to being a busy executive, mom and spokesperson, Hilling also makes time to give back to her community. Hilling is Chairman of the Board of the San Diego New Children’s Museum, Past Co-Chair and Honorary Member of the Advisory Board of Scripps Memorial Hospital of La Jolla, California, a founding board member of Doctors Offering Charitable Services (DOCS), and past board member of the Boards of the International Spa Association and ISPA Foundation.
