Although the majority of white Southerners were staunchly opposed to racial integration during the 1950 & 60s, there were a few mavericks who held a different point of view.  One of these was Big Jim Folsom, who successfully ran for Governor of Alabama in 1946, and again in 1954.  Gov. Folsom gained popularity by challenging the corruption and selfishness of the wealthy elites who dominated state politics.  He became known for building roads & schools, and he created old-age pensions & worker protection laws.  However, by the mid-50s, a different and uglier version of populism began sweeping the South, as white Southerners rallied against the push to give civil rights & voting rights to African-Americans.  Folsom's popularity suffered because he was relatively progressive on racial issues, & said he would not defy the federal courts if they mandated integration.  In 1962, Big Jim's racial tolerance, along with his many personal flaws & vices, caused him to lose the governor's race to George C. Wallace, a former Folsom supporter who had become a militant segregationist.  Gov. Wallace went on to gain national fame as a far-right demagogue, while Big Jim & his form of economic populism faded from the Southern political scene.Support the show

If President Lyndon B. Johnson has a real claim to greatness it is for his work to pass the Voter's Rights Act of 1965.  It was the act that guaranteed every citizen in this country the right to vote. It came after a horrifying Sunday in the Alabama town of Selma. It was there that a contingent of Alabama State Troopers attacked a group of protesters as they marched across the Edmund Pettus Bridge. The entire country watched it all on television, including the President.Lyndon Johnson had just passed a Civil Rights Act in 1964 that had guaranteed access to all Americans to public places. But that Act did nothing about laws and restrictions all over the country that were used to prevent African Americans from voting and registering to vote. Johnson knew that something had to be done and it could wait no longer. It had been a century since President Abraham Lincoln had signed the Emancipation Proclamation and won a war to insure African Americans their freedom in America. During the century that had followed a  period of racist, shameful segregation had been allowed to exist unchallenged through out the land.Lyndon Johnson knew that his chance to gain a permanent place of greatness in our nation's history would be "to finish what Lincoln began." Here listen in as he works with Dr. Martin Luther King Jr,  Senator Everett Douglas, and many others to get the 1965 act passed and to insure the safety of thousands of protesters in Alabama as they marched to secure their rights as Americans. Listen in as he pressures the Alabama Governor, George C. Wallace (no relation) into securing the safety of the marchers. It is truly a historic moment in the history of our country and thanks to President Johnson's taping system and the gift of audio recording we can listen in as it all unfolds.

That's a question I get asked often. You can be an activist, an entrepreneur, a media personality, or politics. That's why I decided to become a member of the largest pro-liberty party in the United States, the Libertarian Party. I started my show with the goals to educate, enlighten, and inform, while also advancing the principles of liberty. The LP is the largest political party in America that, at its core principles, embraces the values of individual liberty, property rights, and non-aggression. The other two major parties have embraced tribal warfare versus principled debate. It's time we stop feeding the beast and put our money where out mouths are. That means putting petty bickering and nonsensical arguments aside and actually advancing liberty. The LP, like every political party, has its flaws. But instead of focusing on those flaws and tossing stones from the cheap seats, it's time we take personal responsibility (like we promote on a regular basis) and take some responsibility in making the LP the best it can be. Segregationist George C. Wallace is sworn in as governor of Alabama. George Corley Wallace was born in Clio, Alabama in 1919 and graduated from the University of Alabama Law School in 1942. Following a brief military stint, he found his legal work taking him into politics. Initially elected to the Alabama legislature and bench as a judge, the long-time Democrat was defeated in his race for governor in 1958. His opponent had the support of the Ku Klux Klan, an endorsement Wallace refused. But Wallace was so devastated by his defeat, that he quickly adopted the racist views of the majority. In the next race for governor, he promoted segregation and small government – and was sworn in on January 14, 1963 after garnering more votes than any previous governor in Alabama. In his inaugural speech, Wallace pledged “segregation now, segregation tomorrow, segregation forever." Federal interference blocked Wallace from keeping the pledge, but he was elected four times as governor and ran the same number of times for U.S. president. Following an assassination attempt in 1972, he was paralyzed from the waist down. And yet, after many years in and out of politics – and after rescinding his segregationist stance with a public apology – Wallace was elected governor once again in 1982. He clinched the title thanks to majority support from the African American community. He died in September 1998. See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
