This episode of How To Fail was recorded in front of a live audience at London's Barbican Theatre. Sally Phillips has appeared in a string of the most influential and hilarious comedy series of all time - from Smack The Pony, Miranda, The Thick of It and Veep. Not forgetting, of course, her star turn as Bridget Jones's best friend, Shazza, in the hugely popular movie franchise.  Alongside her professional success, Phillips has also been an important voice in the neurodivergent community. Her eldest son, Olly, has Down syndrome and Sally is a tireless campaigner for disability rights. So why, then, does she never feel she's made it as a ‘serious' actress? And why is she so obsessed with Clown School? And - pressing question - why have she and Colin Firth never been a thing? Over on Failing with Friends, Sally answers questions from the live audience at the Barbican: they discuss red and green flags in partners, and what Hugh Grant is REALLY like and whether Sally and Renée Zellweger really are friends or whether she might just be making it up? Oscar Month continues! Bev's couple of weeks off begins! She's not here to talk about The King's Speech, which is a classy movie that ended up being a huge hit, even though it's about a group of people that Ryan has never liked: the royals? A monarchy? In a democracy? Yet, credit where it's due, Tom Hooper does an admirable job of making a non-fan care about the king of England and his enunciation---and also Nazi-related---troubles. Colin Firth won gold for his work as the stuttering Prince Albert/King George VI who gets a job he never wanted while his supportive wife (Helena Bonham Carter) and unorthodox speech therapist (Geoffrey Rush) are just about his only support system. The King's Speech is often quite touching and it's even inspirational, showing a privileged man have to deal with confidence issues, loneliness, his uncaring fellow royals and duty to his country. So don't storm off in anger. Just tune into the 651st episode of Have You Ever Seen and listen to one man's speech...about a speech. Well, Actually: while Slumdog Millionaire started the trend of the entire cast & crew in attendance at the Oscars going up on stage when the film wins Best Picture, the entire LOTR: ROTK cast & crew DID go up on stage the year THEY won Best Picture. Also, Helena Bonham Carter plays "Bellatrix Lestrange" in the Harry Potter series, not "Beatrix". We are sponsored by the coffee that's fit for a king or a queen: Sparkplug Coffee. It's 1996, and Dan is yelling "Elaine was right" as Claire, Erin, and he dissect Harvey Weinstein's first big Oscar win, The English Patient. Was this an early example of the current hip category fraud, where a co-lead ran as a supporting actress for an easier Oscar? Does cheating on young, hot Colin Firth make sense? Min 23.

In which Colin Firth's ghost and Hugh Grant's filmography take center stage. Also, for the curious and/or pedantic: - This movie's opening did not, in fact, beat Barbie's at the UK box office. But it did beat Oppenheimer, the new Captain America (no surprise there), and (of course) previous romcom box office records set by earlier Bridget Jones movies. - Kat's assertions about which book plot most closely matches which movie plot should not be taken very seriously, as, at the time of recording, she had not reread either book 1 or book 2 since the mid-2000s. Turns out both are adapted...with movie 2 possibly (and unfortunately) actually the more faithful?? Oof. - The very first Bridget Jones column can be read here.

Then, James Norton stars as a father who learns he may have brought the wrong baby home from the hospital in ITV's melodramatic airport novel Playing Nice.  Then, Channel 4 adapts French drama Astrid: A Murder in Paris, transporting the story of an autistic woman who works in the police records office from Paris to York. Another year, another Christmas Special! We've scraped the barrel of festive ideas and selected Love Actually, the "greatest Christmas movie of all time", as the unfortunate premise of this year's audio horrorshow. In this edition, Ross G will be asking questions that are very loosely based on the Richard Curtis classic, with answers from Ross D, Anna and Owen. Including: In Love Actually, grumpy husband Alan Rickman gets into trouble when he buys a necklace for a woman who isn't his wife. If you were to buy a gold necklace for another profession, other than L&D, what would it be and why? Creepy romantic Andrew Lincoln spends Love Actually pining after Keira Knightley: The wife of his best friend. What aspect of L&D do you secretly love, but know that you can never be involved with? Spurned husband Colin Firth spends Love Actually learning Portuguese to be with the woman he loves. What L&D language do you plan on spending the Christmas season learning? Aging rocker Bill Nighy performs his single 'Christmas Is All Around Me' naked on TV, to celebrate it taking the Christmas Number 1 spot. What's your great ambition for 2025? During the discussion, Ross D referenced our newsletter 'Every learning intervention you design should be award-worthy' Ross G referenced the Mitchell & Webb sketch 'Are we the baddies?' Anna recommended our 'critical thinking' Skill Bite course. The papers Anna discussed were: Carter, J. W., & Youssef-Morgan, C. (2022). Psychological capital development effectiveness of face-to-face, online, and Micro-learning interventions. Education and Information Technologies, 27(5), 6553-6575. Carpenter, S. K., Pan, S. C., & Butler, A. C. (2022). The science of effective learning with spacing and retrieval practice. Nature Reviews Psychology, 1(9), 496-511. In 'What I Learned This Week', Ross D revealed a shocking truth about Darlene Love's 'All Alone On Christmas'. Ross G recommended A Christmas Carol, as read by Hugh Grant. Documenteers: The Documentary Podcast

For our month of musicals we certainly had some choices for the sub-sub genre of song movies known as “Jukebox Musicals”. These are musicals in which the music is based on pre-existing material. Maybe it's cheat mode when you're mining from something that was already popular but remember how not cool it was in that “A Knight's Tale” movie with Heath Ledger in it? Remember that shit? I guess that last Joker movie is technically a jukebox musical too, eh? Well we picked a bonafide moneymaker when it comes to jukebox musicals and you definitely gotta credit the songs because this plot is totally batshit. Maybe the most musically familiar to both hosts because they consider ABBA do be one of the most enjoyable pop groups of all time. You probably went to see this movie with your eccentric Aunt with the dangliest earrings, twice divorced, lived in Barcelona for three years and then Sarasota ever since, has a boyfriend from Morocco who is half her age. No shit we're talking about “MAMMA MIA!” From 2008 directed by Phyllida Lloyd and starring Meryl Streep, Amanda Seyfried, Pierce Brosnan, Colin Firth & Stellan Skarsgård. Maybe, just maybe, there's a very good reason the polar opposites on the political spectrum, the left and the right, can't see eye to eye. Scientists say there is some evidence that says left-wing and right-wing brains are actually wired differently. And here's a twist, British actor Colin Firth, perhaps best known for his role as Mr Darcy in Pride and Prejudice, was the reason behind the research. The Rolling Stone's song ‘You Can't Always Get What You Want,' is my earworm this season. This week, I started to pick apart how wants, needs and arcs are connected. Dorian Gray is a classic cautionary tale about selling your soul. Dorian arrives in London as a beautiful but naive young man and dies with a rotten and decrepit soul - he is unredeemable. Dorian gets what he wants, but he doesn't get what he needs because there are no consequences for his actions. Understanding how wants, needs and character arcs is an essential story tool. Good exposition is invisible. Valerie highlights how exposition is masterfully delivered and where it fails. Exposition is all about information management - the what and the how. -M“Understanding wants and needs is important for story arcs because they determine the protagonist's motivations and actions.” Melanie HillRelated Story Nerd EpisodesThe Woman King (Season 8 Episode 2)The Social Network (Season 12 Episode 1) For access to writing templates and worksheets, and more than 70 hours of training (all for free), subscribe to Valerie's Inner Circle. To learn to read like a writer, visit Melanie's website.Follow Valerie on X, Instagram and Threads @valerie_francisFollow Melanie on X, Instagram and Facebook @MelanieHillAuthor

The ‘Austenmania' craze of the mid-90s kicked off with the BBC's production of ‘Pride and Prejudice', which first aired on 24th September, 1995. Now primarily remembered for Colin Firth's ‘wet shirt' scene, Andrew Davies's ‘sexed up' adaptation also starred Firth's real-life squeeze Jennifer Ehle as Elizabeth Bennet, and was the first serialisation of the novel to be filmed on location, with picturesque country estates providing a ‘property porn' backdrop to the plot's central romance. While the merits of its Oscar wins are certainly discussed, we primarily want to know how the film holds up on its own fourteen years later. Join Lauren LaMagna, Josh Parham, Alyssa Christian, Dan Bayer, and me as we discuss our thoughts on the performances, writing, direction, cinematography, its awards season success, and more in our SPOILER-FILLED review. It's been a fun retrospective, and we hope you'll go back and listen to our reviews for "Black Swan," "The Town," "The Fighter," "Toy Story 3," "Winter's Bone," "127 Hours," "Blue Valentine," "The Kids Are All Right," "Inception" and former reviews for "The Social Network," and "True Grit." Please be sure to take a look at the winners of the NBP Film Community and NBP Film Awards for 2010. I would like to give a final thank you to all of you, the dear listeners of Next Best Picture. We appreciate your support and hope you have had as great of a time with this retrospective as we have. Enjoy! Check out more on NextBestPicture.com Please subscribe on...
